Inside the Turmoil at MSNBC:
The Network Responds

The spate of impolitic statements from MSNBC’s liberal-minded hosts in recent months have led many to wonder what, exactly, is going on inside the network. Over on the homepage, I write about the dynamics at play at Rockefeller Plaza, where sources say an executive, Rich Stockwell, is now proofreading the scripts of the network’s daytime hosts before they air. They also say MSNBC president Phil Griffin, who is not an ideologue, is letting primetime star and avowed liberal Rachel Maddow exercise a lot of control. MSNBC is pushing back against the piece, for which I relied heavily on anonymous sources,

No soldiers will return to Iraq: Britain and

Britain and the U.S. last night ruled out sending troops back to Iraq despite the takeover of two major cities by Al Qaeda. A Foreign Office spokesman said ministers were ‘deeply concerned’ by events in Fallujah and Ramadi, where Al Qaeda-linked fighters have taken control, but sources dismissed any military involvement almost five years after the last British troops were pulled out of the country. Bombings in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killed at least 20 people yesterday, while violence around Ramadi left at least 22 soldiers and 12 civilians dead, as well as an unknown number of militants. An eight-year-old girl wearing an explosive suicide vest was stopped by Afghan police as she tried to carry out a deadly attack. The Interior Ministry said police had apprehended the young girl who had intended to carry out a suicide attack against Afghan border police in southern Helmand province. The girl, named as Spozhmay, by NDTV, is reported to be as young as eight and thought to be the sister of a prominent Taliban commander. She was said to be in a state of shock and confusion. In a statement, the Interior Ministry said the girl claimed her brother, a local Taliban commander, had

War On Terror: At the administration´s request, a New York federal judge granted a "compassionate release" from prison for the radical lawyer convicted of helping a terrorist communicate with his followers in Egypt. Lynne Stewart´s release last week by U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl came after a request from the director of the Bureau of Prisons through the office of U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, no doubt with the consent of higher-ups at the Department of Justice. The 74-year-old Stewart was not scheduled for release until August 2018, but prosecutors say she suffers from recurrent stage-four breast cancer and has been

The Pennsylvania woman who called herself ´Jihad Jane´ and plotted to kill a Swedish artist was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison after telling a judge she was once obsessed with jihad. Colleen LaRose, 50, had faced a potential life term. But Judge Petrese Tucker accepted a government request to reduce the sentence, because of her extensive cooperation with investigators. Prosecutors still asked for decades in prison, fearing she remains dangerous. LaRose, of Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, told the judge she once had thought about jihad from morning to night, saying she was ´in a trance.´ ´I don´t want to be into jihad no

Going Backward: The political left is celebrating last week´s inauguration of "progressive" New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and believes a new era of American progressivism has arrived. If it´s right, the country is in trouble. Politicker reported Wednesday from City Hall that de Blasio "was feted" at the inauguration "as the sudden hero of progressives and good-government advocates across the city." On the same day, Washington Post opinion writer E.J. Dionne predicted "the re-emergence of a Democratic left will be one of the major stories of 2014" in a column headlined "The Resurgent Progressives." Dionne suggested that Democratic

Inequality: As of New Year´s Eve, Washington´s wastrels have overspent $17.2 trillion of your money. In their deficit-spending orgy, many have gotten filthy rich, developing a taste for diamonds. Last month we noted the latest Census Bureau data reveal that four of the five richest communities in America are now in Washington — not Manhattan or Silicon Valley or any other business hub derided by class warriors as cauldrons of greed. In fact, the nation´s wealthiest denizens live in the Washington suburb of Falls Church, Va., just outside the capital, with $121,250 in median income. This is also the home of the

More than half of the U.S. is enduring a dangerously cold start to the week as a whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a ‘polar vortex’ descended on Monday morning, pummeling parts of the country with a dangerous cold and adding to the brutal weather that has grounded more than 4,400 flights. Record low temperatures have already been set; at Chicago´s O´Hare International Airport, temperatures of minus 16 degrees were recorded at 8am on Monday, beating the previous record of minus 14 set in 1988. In Minnesota, officials took the rare step of closing all of the state´s public

Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign has rented its email list to Ready for Hillary, the super PAC laying the groundwork for a potential second attempt at the White House. On Sunday, the group emailed the Clinton list offering free “I’m Ready for Hillary” bumper stickers, but unlike dozens of recent emails from the group offering swag, this one had the return address info@hillaryclinton.com. Seth Bringman, a spokesman for the super PAC, told TIME on Sunday that “Ready for Hillary rented the hillaryclinton.com email list to connect with her past supporters.” It’s not uncommon for defeated political campaigns to rent out

In his weekly address released on Saturday, January 4, President Obama had the audacity to slam Republicans for "going home for the holidays" and letting unemployment insurance benefits expire. The only problem is that Obama said this while still on his holiday vacation in Hawaii. A day before his Sunday return to Washington, DC, from a two-week holiday visit to the state of his birth, Obama criticized Republicans for going home for the holidays: "Just a few days after Christmas, more than one million of our fellow Americans lost a vital economic lifeline - the temporary insurance that helps folks make ends

"Excessively high temperatures" are "already" harming public health nationwide, Pres. Obama declared on Nov. 1, 2013, two months before today´s assault by record low temperatures. In his executive order on climate change, Obama warned that too much rain - and not enough rain - also dictated that executive action against climate fluctuations: "The impacts of climate change -- including an increase in prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures, more heavy downpours, an increase in wildfires, more severe droughts, permafrost thawing, ocean acidification, and sea-level rise -- are already affecting communities, natural resources,

SAN FRANCISCO — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi visited a City College of San Francisco campus Monday to express support for the embattled school and to encourage potential students to sign up for classes during the open enrollment period currently under way. Pelosi, who was City College´s commencement speaker in 2011, appeared at the school´s Chinatown/North Beach campus. The school is facing the possible loss of its accreditation because of a decision last July by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, which found that the school had failed to adequately implement needed reforms.

She was declared brain-dead three days later, after she went into cardiac arrest, lost oxygen to her brain and suffered extensive hemorrhaging. Tests by multiple neurologists confirmed that Jahi was unable to breathe without a ventilator, had no blood flow to her brain and no sign of electrical activity. The ventilator has kept her lungs and heart working and her body warm, although she is legally dead. Her family maintains she

A federal judge today declared Chicago’s ordinance banning the sale of firearms in the city unconstitutional. In his 35-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang wrote that the city failed to persuade him that banning the sale of guns by licensed dealers was necessary to reduce gun violence that has plagued the city. “Chicago’s ordinance goes too far in outright banning legal buyers and legal dealers from engaging in lawful acquisitions and lawful sales of firearms, and at the same time the evidence does not support that the complete ban sufficiently furthers the purposes the ordinance tries to serve,” Chang

Does that mean that he is paying for her flight back?" When Chief Justice John Roberts announces, on the morning of Jan. 15, that the Supreme Court will hear oral argument in McCullen v. The case isn´t about the scope of legal protection for that procedure, but about what limits may be placed on speech on public streets near medical facilities in which abortions are performed. McCullen v. Coakley presents the court with an opportunity to reconsider what may well be its most indefensible First Amendment ruling so far this
