Inequality: As of New Year´s Eve, Washington´s wastrels have overspent $17.2 trillion of your money. In their deficit-spending orgy, many have gotten filthy rich, developing a taste for diamonds. Last month we noted the latest Census Bureau data reveal that four of the five richest communities in America are now in Washington — not Manhattan or Silicon Valley or any other business hub derided by class warriors as cauldrons of greed. In fact, the nation´s wealthiest denizens live in the Washington suburb of Falls Church, Va., just outside the capital, with $121,250 in median income. This is also the home of the

More than half of the U.S. is enduring a dangerously cold start to the week as a whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a ‘polar vortex’ descended on Monday morning, pummeling parts of the country with a dangerous cold and adding to the brutal weather that has grounded more than 4,400 flights. Record low temperatures have already been set; at Chicago´s O´Hare International Airport, temperatures of minus 16 degrees were recorded at 8am on Monday, beating the previous record of minus 14 set in 1988. In Minnesota, officials took the rare step of closing all of the state´s public

Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign has rented its email list to Ready for Hillary, the super PAC laying the groundwork for a potential second attempt at the White House. On Sunday, the group emailed the Clinton list offering free “I’m Ready for Hillary” bumper stickers, but unlike dozens of recent emails from the group offering swag, this one had the return address info@hillaryclinton.com. Seth Bringman, a spokesman for the super PAC, told TIME on Sunday that “Ready for Hillary rented the hillaryclinton.com email list to connect with her past supporters.” It’s not uncommon for defeated political campaigns to rent out

From Hawaii, Obama Blasted Republicans

In his weekly address released on Saturday, January 4, President Obama had the audacity to slam Republicans for "going home for the holidays" and letting unemployment insurance benefits expire. The only problem is that Obama said this while still on his holiday vacation in Hawaii. A day before his Sunday return to Washington, DC, from a two-week holiday visit to the state of his birth, Obama criticized Republicans for going home for the holidays: "Just a few days after Christmas, more than one million of our fellow Americans lost a vital economic lifeline - the temporary insurance that helps folks make ends

"Excessively high temperatures" are "already" harming public health nationwide, Pres. Obama declared on Nov. 1, 2013, two months before today´s assault by record low temperatures. In his executive order on climate change, Obama warned that too much rain - and not enough rain - also dictated that executive action against climate fluctuations: "The impacts of climate change -- including an increase in prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures, more heavy downpours, an increase in wildfires, more severe droughts, permafrost thawing, ocean acidification, and sea-level rise -- are already affecting communities, natural resources,

SAN FRANCISCO — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi visited a City College of San Francisco campus Monday to express support for the embattled school and to encourage potential students to sign up for classes during the open enrollment period currently under way. Pelosi, who was City College´s commencement speaker in 2011, appeared at the school´s Chinatown/North Beach campus. The school is facing the possible loss of its accreditation because of a decision last July by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, which found that the school had failed to adequately implement needed reforms.

Why would you work in the cable news business? Does anybody look their best in cable news? The people in front of the camera look extreme, demented, desperate or vapid. People behind the camera, the suits charged with finding shameless programming ploys to move the ratings needle, pretty much constantly disappoint their bosses. Except for Roger Ailes. The 2013 numbers are out, and once more, for 12 years running, Ailes´ Fox News trashes everybody else in the cable news space, with an audience larger than CNN´s and MSNBC´s combined. It´s a one-man business. Ailes is the beginning and end. Since he took the

She was declared brain-dead three days later, after she went into cardiac arrest, lost oxygen to her brain and suffered extensive hemorrhaging. Tests by multiple neurologists confirmed that Jahi was unable to breathe without a ventilator, had no blood flow to her brain and no sign of electrical activity. The ventilator has kept her lungs and heart working and her body warm, although she is legally dead. Her family maintains she

A federal judge today declared Chicago’s ordinance banning the sale of firearms in the city unconstitutional. In his 35-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang wrote that the city failed to persuade him that banning the sale of guns by licensed dealers was necessary to reduce gun violence that has plagued the city. “Chicago’s ordinance goes too far in outright banning legal buyers and legal dealers from engaging in lawful acquisitions and lawful sales of firearms, and at the same time the evidence does not support that the complete ban sufficiently furthers the purposes the ordinance tries to serve,” Chang

When Chief Justice John Roberts announces, on the morning of Jan. 15, that the Supreme Court will hear oral argument in McCullen v. The case isn´t about the scope of legal protection for that procedure, but about what limits may be placed on speech on public streets near medical facilities in which abortions are performed. McCullen v. Coakley presents the court with an opportunity to reconsider what may well be its most indefensible First Amendment ruling so far this

City Journal´s Kay Hymowitz weighed in over the holidays with a response to our Dec. 16 column, in which we faulted the premise of her earlier article titled "Boy Trouble." She maintains that the main body of the article (which we described as "informative and important") is responsive to our criticism: "Men traditionally sought to ´better themselves´ not because working in an office or on an assembly line was itself a source of delight, but because being a workingman enabled them to earn respect and made possible the joys of domestic life," Taranto writes. The estimated amount of taxpayer-funded payments that the federal government doled out through fraud, waste, and errors slightly decreased in 2013 to $106 billion from $108 billion the previous year, according to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). On Dec. 31, FederalTimes.com reported the estimated government-wide improper payments dollar figure for fiscal 2013, citing Frank Benenati, an OMB spokesman as the source. Benenati did not provide a breakdown of the 2013 payment errors by government program, saying that information would not be available for weeks, according to the FederalTimes.com article.

WASHINGTON — The Senate is expected to confirm Janet L. Yellen as the chairwoman of the Federal Reserve on Monday evening, although inclement weather might delay the vote until Tuesday. Ms. Yellen, currently the Fed’s vice chairwoman, would be the first woman to lead the country’s central bank in its 100-year history. She would also be the first Democratic nominee to run the Fed since President Jimmy Carter named Paul Volcker as chairman in 1979. Ms. Yellen needs the support of a simple majority of senators, which assures her confirmation because she does not need any Republican support. Late last

Last week, I wrote here about zero-tolerance stupidity, suggesting that as schools grow more and more willing to punish and stigmatize kids for reasons of bureaucratic convenience, it might be parental malpractice to put your kids in public schools. But there´s another problem with public schools that goes beyond these kinds of problems: Even when they work well, public schools introduce all sorts of costs and rigidities into everyday life. That´s not surprising. Public schools were designed to be rigid. Back in the 19th century, when Massachusetts Board of Education Secretary Horace Mann toured Europe looking for models of public education
