President Obama’s promise to be the most transparent administration in history is proving to be true with regard to the recent appointment of John Podesta as his high profile congressional circumvention strategist. Podesta’s belief in government by fiat is clear. As he wrote in a 2010 Center for American Progress report, “[executive power] presents a real opportunity for the Obama administration to turn its focus away from a divided Congress and the unappetizing process of making legislative sausage.” Amidst scandals and a disastrous ObamaCare rollout, Politico writer Glenn Thrush reported that White House insiders told him Podesta’s hiring “represents the clearest

On New Year’s Day Kyle Becker, writing at Independent Journal Review, published the amusing but true list of eight things liberals do to avoid having an honest debate. Given that his focus was on the American left, I wanted to pull the camera lens out so to speak and have a look at this from a broader perspective including my own experiences and what the British do differently. The list of eight things liberals do to avoid having an honest debate – according to Kyle Becker Ad Hominem (Name-Calling aka “You’re a Racist!” etc.) Distracting (aka “Pivoting” aka “Changing the

Eastern European migrants are being offered expert help to fraudulently milk the benefits system by an accountants agency run by a Bulgarian businessman, a Mail on Sunday undercover investigation has revealed. Our reporter, posing as a newly arrived Bulgarian migrant seeking to claim benefits, was filmed being illegally offered bogus documents to support her application by an ‘advice’ agency in North London yesterday. The news comes as work and benefit restrictions were relaxed by the Government on New Year’s Day for migrants from the EU’s two poorest nations, Bulgaria and Romania. More than 100,000 Americans who applied for insurance through HealthCare.gov and were told they are eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) remain unenrolled because of lingering software defects in the federal online marketplace, according to federal and state health officials. To try to provide coverage to these people before they seek medical care, the Obama administration has launched a barrage of phone calls in recent days in 21 states, advising those who applied that the quickest route into the programs is to start over at their state’s Medicaid agency. State officials, meanwhile, are racing to cope in various

Church of England accused of

The Church of England has been accused of "dumbing down" the baptism service by changing its wording so parents and godparents no longer have to "repent sins" and "reject the devil". A trial of the new wording, aimed at making it easier to understand, will last in parishes until Easter. The former bishop of Rochester Michael Nazir-Ali, writing in the Mail on Sunday, branded the change part of the "constant dumbing down of Christian teaching" rather than making an effort to explain the meaning of baptism. In the original version, the vicar asks: "Do you reject the devil and all

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - President Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia have departed Hawaii after a 15-day family vacation for the holidays. The president and his daughters took off for Washington aboard Air Force One on Saturday night. Obama left Hawaii after a final low-key day spent mostly on the eastern side of the island. He played golf, hung out in his vacation home with his family and ate dinner at a popular steakhouse near a beachside park. After dinner, the family drove to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Obama and his daughters greeted people gathered behind a rope line to watch them depart.

Edward Snowden has started a critical debate about the legality and the effectiveness of the N.S.A.’s practice of collecting unlimited records of telephone calls made to, from, and within the United States. Last month, two federal judges came to opposing conclusions about these issues. On December 16th, Judge Richard J. Leon, in Washington, D.C., ruled that the indiscriminate hoarding violates the Fourth Amendment right to privacy and its prohibition of unreasonable searches. Two weeks later, in New York, Judge William H. Pauley III ruled that the metadata-collection program was lawful and effective. Judge Pauley invoked the example of Khalid al-Mihdhar, a

The Girl Scouts recently promoted Texas gubernatorial candidate and pro-abortion advocate Wendy Davis as an "incredible" woman who deserved to be on a 2013 "women of the year" list. After calling Davis, the mainstream media darling whose claim to fame was filibustering to block a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks, "incredible," the official Girl Scouts Twitter account linked to a Huffington Post list that had Davis and Gloria Steinem on it. Christy Volanski, a former member of the Girl Scouts who has explored some of the ties the organization may have to Planned Parenthood, told LifeNews that "it saddens me

Nowadays on New Year´s Eve I´m enveloped by two separate annual rituals. First, there´s a sense of dread I experience as to what bad-taste joke will be told by a network host before the ball drops. Second, I take stock of what events will be celebrated in the upcoming year. Mercifully this year I missed the first, but on the second the realization hit that this will be the 40th anniversary of the CBS Radio Mystery Theatrer (yes, that CBS), which, amazingly, handled topics as abortion, homosexuality, communism, (Islamic!) terrorism, witchcraft and Christianity with such wisdom that I still don´t

While members of Congress ended 2013 congratulating themselves for passing a budget, the media missed the fact that the agreement doesn´t actually avoid a government shutdown. The deal reached by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) provides simply a blueprint for government spending. Congress must still pass legislation detailing specific spending before January 15, when government´s spending authority expires. Government still faces a potential shutdown in a little over a week. The budget agreement passed by Congress in the closing days of last year provides what is called the "top-Line" number, setting the overall level of discretionary spending.

Records of the infamous red narco-terrorist organization FARC show that ties between that organization and Morales stretch all the way back to at least 2003, with meetings organized in Hugo Chavez´s Venezuela between senior FARC operatives and Morales. Violent crime against women in Afghanistan hit record levels and became increasingly brutal in 2013, the head of its human rights commission said on Saturday, a sign that hard won rights are being rolled back as foreign troops troops prepare to withdraw. Restoring fundamental women´s rights after the Taliban were ousted by a U.S.-led coalition of troops in 2001 was cited as one of the main objectives of the war. Under the Taliban, women were forced to wear the head-to-toe covering burqa and barred from leaving their homes without being escorted by a male relative. Schools for girls were shut down. He will formally announce his plans in his state of the state speech Wednesday. The announcement would represent an about-face by Cuomo, who has previously opposed medical marijuana. Iraqi police and tribal fighters claimed to have retaken the western city of Falluja from al-Qaida affiliates on Saturday after heavy clashes that left scores of dead there and in the neighbouring city of Ramadi in recent days. Amid reports of civilians fleeing fighting elsewhere in Anbar and Ninevah provinces, social media in the country described continuing serious violence in western Iraq between Sunni Islamist militants and forces of the country´s Shia-dominated government. Officials and witnesses said the northern and eastern parts of Falluja were still under the control of tribesmen and militants on Saturday despite shelling from government troops, Reuters reported. The Obama administration, stung by the failures of the HealthCare.gov rollout, is considering loosening hiring rules for technology specialists and creating a new federal unit dedicated to big tech projects, officials said. The steps, some of which President Barack Obama could announce this quarter, are designed to address the lack of concentrated talent in civilian federal agencies to manage large technology projects—a shortcoming exposed by October´s disastrous launch of the federal health-insurance site. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services initially served as its own general contractor on the project, but its lack of technical expertise quickly became apparent. Only after the

JERUSALEM - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry voiced confidence on Sunday the Iraqi government and tribes would be successful in their fight against al Qaeda, and said Washington was not considering sending troops back to Iraq. Sectarian and ethnic tensions have risen in Iraq since the U.S. withdrawal in December 2011, inflamed by the conflict in neighboring Syria, where mainly Sunni rebels are trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad, who is backed by Shi´ite Iran. The Iraqi army has joined forces with local tribesmen to battle al Qaeda, which has teamed up with groups of Syrian rebels to try to create

It’s a stretch, but what is happening today in France is being compared to the revocation of 1685. In that year, Louis XIV, the Sun King who built the Palace of Versailles, revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had protected French Protestants – the Huguenots. Trying to unite his kingdom by a common religion, the king closed churches and persecuted the Huguenots. As a result, nearly 700,000 of them fled France, seeking asylum in England, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and other countries. The Huguenots, nearly a million strong before 1685, were thought of as the worker bees of France. They left
