Michael Hayden, Ex-NSA Director,

The New York Times and The Guardian asked President Obama to be lenient on the leaker in two editorials Thursday. According to the U.S. intelligence community, Edward Snowden is the most dangerous leaker in American history. The New York Times and the Guardian, however, on Thursday offered a second opinion. In strongly worded editorials the two newspapers urged President Obama to give the 30 year-old former NSA contractor clemency. Despite the editorials and a campaign from civil liberties groups, it’s unlikely the White House or the intelligence community will support letting Snowden off the hook.

PRAGUE - Czech investigators found unregistered weapons at the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Prague, police said on Thursday, a day after the ambassador was killed in a mysterious explosion after opening a safe. "We have gathered many pieces of evidence, we secured weapons that will be subject to expert evaluation," Prague police chief Martin Vondrasek said on Czech Radio. "We can say the weapons have not gone through a registration process in the Czech Republic," he said, without revealing the quantity and type. Police reiterated their belief that the blast on New Year´s Day may have been caused by mishandling an explosive that

A group of climate change scientists were rescued by helicopter Jan. 2, after being stranded in the ice since Christmas morning. But the majority of the broadcast networks’ reports about the ice-locked climate researchers never mentioned climate change. The Russian ship, Akademic Shokalskiy, was stranded in the ice while on a climate change research expedition, yet nearly 98 percent of network news reports about the stranded researchers failed to mention their mission at all. Forty out of 41 stories (97.5 percent) on the network morning and evening news shows since Dec. 25 failed to mention climate change had anything to

California court lets undocumented

The California Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that an undocumented Mexican immigrant should be licensed to practice law in a closely watched case on immigration rights. The unanimous ruling in favor of Sergio Garcia came after California legislators passed a bill last year that specifically authorized the high court to allow qualified applicants into the state bar, regardless of their immigration status. The U.S. Department of Justice had opposed Garcia´s application, while California Attorney General Kamala Harris supported it. Neither office could immediately comment on Thursday. Last year the Democratic-led U.S. Senate approved a path to citizenship for millions of

Supporters of President Obama’s health care law had predicted that expanding insurance coverage for the poor would reduce costly emergency room visits as people sought care from primary care doctors. But a rigorous new study conducted in Oregon has flipped that assumption on its head, finding that the newly insured actually went to the emergency room more often. The study, published in the journal Science, compared thousands of low-income people in the Portland area who were randomly selected in a 2008 lottery to get Medicaid coverage with people who entered the lottery but remained uninsured.

He was 84. Bakken Crude More Dangerous

Crude oil produced in North America’s Bakken region may be more flammable and therefore more dangerous to ship by rail than crude from other areas, a U.S. regulator said after studying the question for four months. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration announced its preliminary conclusion three days after a BNSF Railway Co. train carrying oil caught fire after a collision in Casselton, North Dakota. The regulator “is reinforcing the requirement to properly test, characterize, classify, and where appropriate sufficiently degasify hazardous materials prior to and during transportation,” it said in a statement posted on its website today.

If you look closely at my Times byline, beginning with Thursday’s column, you’ll notice something odd. Well, actually, you probably won’t notice it. I’ve knocked out my middle initial for the new year. I acquired it in my byline because as a college journalist at The Harvard Crimson, we were all encouraged to use full names with middle initials. In the fall of freshman year, I wasn’t going to argue, so I became Nicholas D. Kristof. And I have been, in the Times and in my books, ever since. The middle initial adds a bit of authority and gravitas, and

Malcolm Gladwell´s great book The Tipping Point presents the case that sudden seismic shifts in society can result from small events, if the right factors are present. Tipping points happen when momentum toward an idea builds and finally crosses a threshold where it is evident that a major cultural change has occurred. The global warming tipping point is coming, but not the one anticipated by climate change "experts." A Chinese toddler who was allowed to tear old books by his parents ripped up the family´s entire life savings when he found the money under a bed. The little boy, 4, was left alone by his mother Liu Fan, 28, in the bedroom of their home in Xi´an, Shaanxi province, West China. The curious boy found the cash - thought to be worth around £3,000 - in a box under the bed and proceeded to rip it to shreds while his parents were none-the-wiser in a room next door. There’s a faint sound of quacking coming from the legendary Hawaiian surf. It comes from the culture-war victory that tailed Obama all the way to Kailua when caving to public sentiment, A&E brought Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson back to cable television. Photos of Phil Robertson outdid Obama vacation ones. According to AP only about two dozen people crowded in a roped-off area outside a nearby pizzeria, in a tiny strip mall near the beach when Obama went with his two daughters to a local Kailua shop for shaved ice on Tuesday. “I hope you guys have a great 2014,” Obama told the crowd.

For most people, having a lot of rich people around is good for business. But if average folks are not complaining should they be? Is Poverty Really The Result Of Bad Luck? New York City — We all knew we were in for something completely different when the inauguration of self-described “progressive” Bill de Blasio as New York’s mayor began with a keynote from pro-Communist activist Harry Belafonte. The 86-year-old singer has a history of extremism. He has been an infamous house guest of Fidel Castro, called Colin Powell and Condi Rice “house slaves” of the Bush administration, and last year compared the free-market Koch brothers to the Ku Klux Klan. “We will be no longer a divided city,” he proclaimed as he compared today’s New York to a “Dickensian” nightmare, as departing mayor
