Camille Paglia: War on Men
Destroying American Culture

In October of 2012, Salon veteran, art historian, culture critic, and provocateur Camille Paglia returned to Salon for an interview in which she raved about Bravo’s Real Housewives series because, to her, the episodes were “authentic old-time soap opera,” a television genre she once adored and has since pronounced “dead.” Hailing Real Housewives as “archetypal b****h fests,” Paglia said she had read that Gloria Steinem hates Real Housewives of New Jersey, and was ready to protest the show. “Well, there’s the big difference between Steinem and me,” Paglia said. “She sees the show as a distortion of women, while I

ObamaCare’s latest whopper

In 2013, the American people learned what whoppers the key promises of ObamaCare turned out to be. But the biggest whopper about the Affordable Care Act is yet to be exposed: the tightening grip the federal government will have over your doctor — even if you’re paying with private insurance. Like so many other parts of ObamaCare, the reality flies in the face of promises. In this case, it was the one where the president assured us that “you’re not going to have anybody getting in between you and your doctor in your decision making.” Section 1311(h)(1)(B) of the health

Chicken overtakes beef as the

Chicken has officially overtaken beef as the most popular meat product being consumed in the U.S. and the trend looks likely to continue in 2014. While the per capita consumption of beef has dropped from a peak of 90lbs per capita in the 1970s to 50 lbs in 2012, chicken consumption has gone the other way rising from under 20 lbs in 1960 to about 55 lbs in 2012. Americans now eat less beef then we did in 1955, but is the change a result of a healthier diet or because people are choosing the cheaper option? The answer is

Where Is Obama Finding the Time

A recurring theme during the Obama presidency has been that, despite the distinct sense he gives of a man who sees himself as “above it all,” the president is a regular down-to-earth Joe. His efforts to connect with the hoi polloi have not always succeeded. His most recent attempt, enrolling in Obamacare, was sullied by the revelation that he didn’t actually dirty his own hands navigating the exchanges — his “staff” enrolled for him — and the gesture was purely symbolic anyway. Former Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen observed at the Washington Post that the cynicism of the move would be

The announcement that Afghanistan is planning to release 88 prisoners from jail has been met with fury by officials in the US. [Snip] About 40 percent of the prisoners were directly responsible for wounding or killing 57 Afghan civilians and security forces, and 30 percent had participated in direct attacks that killed or wounded 60 U.S. and coalition troops, a U.S. official said. ´These are guys that are tied directly to killing and trying to kill our forces and Afghan forces,´ an American military official told the New York Times. ´This is an issue of deep concern. The mystery illness that has killed 27 bald eagles in Utah this month appears to be West Nile Virus, state officials said Tuesday. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said in a statement Tuesday that that laboratory tests done on some of the first birds found indicate they died from West Nile Virus. Since December 1, officials have found the birds in northern and central Utah. All were either dead or were ill and later died during treatment. The eagles displayed similar symptoms, including head tremors, signs of seizures, weakness in legs and feet and a paralysis of the bird´s wings.

Anno Domini 2013 was an excellent opportunity to learn the lesson that we failed to learn in 1857, 1933, 1971, and 2008: Uncertainty is the destroyer. Economic growth remains unsteady, with a consensus among experts that the economy is slowing down as the year closes — Bloomberg calculates the average of economic-growth forecasts at a tepid 1.8 percent. Key figures remained negative in 2013, from the labor-force participation rate (down 2.7 percentage points since Barack Obama took office) to the employment-to-population ratio (down 2 percentage points during the same period). The most important of those economic indicators, at least so

This past year was about a lot more than Ted Cruz and the surreal shutdown politics of the Republican right. Across America, grassroots groups, bold unions, inspired activists, crusading editors and courageous elected officials did great things. They are the real heroes of 2013, and The Nation’s Progressive Honor Roll celebrates them for their accomplishments this year and their determination to do even more in 2014.

Precisely a hundred years ago today, the richest man in the world sent New Year’s greetings to a thousand of the most influential leaders in the U.S. and Europe announcing: mission accomplished. “International Peace,” he proclaimed, “is to prevail through the Great Powers agreeing to settle their disputes by International Law, the pen thus proving mightier than the sword.” Having immigrated to the US penniless, created the steel industry as a pillar of America´s rise to preeminence, and become fabulously wealthy in the process, Andrew Carnegie had the confidence of a man who had achieved the impossible.

Bill Gates is the richest person in the world — but one retired New York hedge-fund mogul thought the software pioneer’s Giving Pledge was “practically worthless.” Robert W. Wilson, a well-known philanthropist who had given away $600 million of his fortune as of 2013, abruptly turned aside Gate’s 2010 request that he sign the Giving Pledge. The pledge pushes billionaires to give away a bulk of their fortune while they are alive, or in their will. Wilson found especially problematic the pledge’s loophole that allowed signers to gift their wealth to a family-controlled foundation. “And these foundations become, more often than not,

Later in the call, Sebelius emphasized that enrollments wouldn´t be completed until individuals paid their first month´s premiums. But HHS officials still won´t disclose how many of the 2.1 million they claim enrolled through the federal healthcare.gov website or one of the state-based exchanges actually paid for coverage.

It really is a Happy New Year. Congratulations and thanks to my friends Rob Muise and Dave Yerushalmi at the American Freedom Law Center (on whose advisory board I am proud to sit, along with several distinguished Americans). They worked tirelessly and down to the 2013 wire to persuade the DC Circuit to issue the injunction Kathryn posted about last night. That ruling prevented the Obamacare mandate from going into effect – i.e., from coercing religious believers, against the tenets of their faiths, to provide coverage for abortifacients and contraceptives. Of course, as we’ve seen before, President Obama often does

Driven by unprecedented bloodshed in Trenton and the most violent 12-month stretch in Newark in nearly a quarter-century, homicides across New Jersey jumped to a seven-year high in 2013, a spike prosecutors and police officials tied to understaffed departments and a growing disregard for life. A Star-Ledger survey of county prosecutors’ offices found at least 409 people died violently last year. More than a quarter of those killings took place in Newark, where a spate of Christmas season slayings pushed the homicide total to 111, including one in the final hours of the year. The tally is the highest since 1990. In Trenton, the number of

When The New York Times first published its Dec. 28 story “A Deadly Mix in Benghazi” by top national security and foreign affairs reporter David D. Kirkpatrick, it seemed just another Christmas present for President Barack Obama and his Times-anointed successor Hillary R. Clinton. Another twist is that Kirkpatrick and the Times are channeling St. Paul. Not only is the story a wonderful Christmas gift for Obama and Clinton, it also was published two days after Dec. 26, the Feast of St. Stephen. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned to death by a mob led by Paul, then a Pharisee counterinsurgency agent fighting Christians.

Tom Edwards grew up in a family that's been cutting trees and hauling timber in the Pacific Northwest for more than a century. The Spanaway, Wash., resident says he has worked as a logger since he was a kid -- it's just what an able-bodied youngster was expected to do. Now, at 53, with business in a slump and little money in savings, he's pessimistic about his chances of retiring. "It's never going to happen. By the time I reach retirement age, there won't be Social Security. There's not going to be any money," Edwards said. "I'll do like my father did: I'll work "til I die." Across the U.S., such concerns are common among

On December 30th, Representative Steve Stockman (R-TX) tweeted a picture of gun oil with the words "liberal tears" taped across it and this caption: "The best gun lubricant around." Politico published the tweet and also announced that Stockman will "challenge incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) in the Texas Republican primary." As Breitbart News reported earlier this year, while many in the federal government were still lamenting the failure of Senator Joe Manchin´s (D-WV) gun control bill, Stockman was announcing that he would be giving away an AR-15 to a lucky supporter during the summer.

A scholarly study newly released in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science has revealed that most convicts in jail register as Democrats. The study stated, “Democrats would benefit from additional ex-felon participation.” The professors who authored the study came from the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University. The study found that felons registered Democratic over Republican by a six-to-one margin in some states, including New York, where 61.5% are Democrats and only 9% GOP. Another fact discovered was that 73% of the felons who would vote would vote Democrat.

Perhaps the question has entered your mind. It’s entered mine many times: “Who are these people who think Thomas Friedman is smart?” Not to specifically pick on Thomas Friedman (not that this wouldn’t be richly deserved), but the question really has to do with a whole culture of generally left-wing people who gravitate around ideas, events and notions that can be shown to be quite empty when you really examine them. But they don’t really examine them. They just gravitate and congratulate themselves and each other on how smart they are for being associated with them. It’s the appearance of intelligence without the substance to

Thirteen people were injured, six critically, early Wednesday moirning after an explosion caused a major fire at a grocery store and apartment building on Cedar Ave. in south Minneapolis. No cause has been identified as of yet, said Greg Nelson, supervisor of the Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center, but the building that housed the West Bank Grocery and a mosque is likely a total loss. A police squad car reported the fire at around 8:16 a.m. after seeing the explosion and seeing debris on the street, he said. Flames were shooting 20 feet from the building, officials said. The second and third floor later collapsed. The injured were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center and Univesity Hospital.
