Former first lady Barbara Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Monday for treatment of a "respiratory-related issue," according to a statement issued by her husband´s office Tuesday night. The statement said Bush, 88, "is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care. Updates will be issued when warranted." Recent concern has focused on the health of her husband, George H.W. Bush, the nation´s 41st president. George Bush, 89, was released from Methodist Hospital last January after seven weeks of treatment for bronchitis, a bacterial infection and a persistent cough.

Taxpayers lose slew of

A final congressional stalemate in late December means the New Year’s expiration of a host of tax breaks, amounting to a $54.2 billion increase for green-energy businesses, teachers, homeowners, college students and others. Businesses will take the biggest hit, with the disappearance Wednesday of a valuable research tax credit, subsidies for building wind turbines and incentives to make energy efficiency improvements to buildings. Individuals will take hits, too. Those who pay college tuition will lose a tax credit, as will taxpayers who deduct state and local sales tax payments or who pay mortgage insurance.

Stock market caps best year of century

The stock market put in a stellar performance in 2013, with major indexes soaring to all-time highs and posting gains of nearly 30 percent — the best since the 1990s. Investors are betting that a detente in Washington’s fiscal wars will allow the U.S. economy to pick up some steam in 2014. Many small investors who were burned by two major stock collapses in the 2000s and avoided the market for years are beginning to be drawn back into stocks by the big gains last year. While stocks were soaring, some popular alternatives had dismal years. Broad measures of the bond market declined, while gold plummeted by 28 percent in its worst crash since

If President Obama thought 2013 was an unproductive year for his agenda in Congress, he probably will enjoy 2014 even less. Mr. Obama has criticized the current Congress for being on track to become “the most unproductive in history.” As campaigning begins in earnest for the congressional midterm elections, the president plans to push partisan proposals, such as raising the minimum wage, that have little chance of becoming law but are intended to draw distinctions for voters. “The minimum wage is a very important part of the Democratic argument on economic inequality,” said Republican strategist John Feehery.

HOUSTON -- Houston ISD bus drivers came together to support a coworker and to protest a move by the school district. Several drivers were reprimanded for praying with that coworker, after she lost a child. In response to that -- they´re praying even more. On December 16, a 12-year-old girl was struck by a car as she walked home from school in north Harris County. She would later die from her injuries. She was the daughter of an HISD bus driver, whose coworkers rallied around her. Bus driver Cynthia Cormier said, "From a parent's point of view and from a grandparent's, prayer is the answer."

Colorado medical marijuana shops are expecting a "very festive" atmosphere at 8 AM tomorrow, when they will be able to open their doors to anyone willing to buy the drug. The state has predicted that 2014 will see a $571.1 million profit on legal marijuana sales in 2014, all of it taxed. A Bloomberg report on the eve that marijuana legalization takes effect in Colorado notes that the state also expects $67 million in tax revenue alone from those nearly $600 million in profits. The profits will go in part to funding schools, and only those over the age of

Ex-White House National Security spokesman Tommy Vietor said on Tuesday that reconciling his previous statements of Al Qaeda involvement in the terrorist attack on Benghazi—as compared to claims by the New York Times’ David Kirkpatrick that Al Qaeda was not involved—is nothing more than a “parsing game.”Vietor, who left the White House earlier this year to form consulting firm Fenway Strategies with President Barack Obama’s longtime speechwriter Jon Favreau, told this reporter via Twitter that pointing out the contradiction between his past and current stances on who is behind the attack in Benghazi is just a "game."

Former Mississippi governor and uber-Republican Haley Barbour loves bourbon. Franklin Roosevelt mixed martinis. And, as it turns out, those two partisans have something in common with their base voters: Consumer data suggests Democrats prefer clear spirits, while Republicans like their brown liquor. Democratic drinkers are more likely to sip Absolut and Grey Goose vodkas, while Republican tipplers are more likely to savor Jim Beam, Canadian Club and Crown Royal. That research comes from consumer data supplied by GFK MRI, and analyzed by Jennifer Dube of National Media Research Planning and Placement,

In a new year message broadcast on state TV, he said "resolute action" had strengthened the country´s unity. [Snip] Kim Jong-Un said action to "eliminate factionalist filth" within the ruling Workers´ Party had bolstered the country´s unity "by 100 times". Cold Climate: In an event chock-full of bitterly cold irony, perhaps even Al Gore has noticed that multiple icebreakers couldn´t free a boat stuck in Antarctic ice that global warming was supposed to have melted. Few of the media reports on the plight of the Russian-flagged research vessel MV Akademik Schokalskiy have noted the irony of a ship full of climate scientists getting stuck in an Antarctic ice sheet so thick that early attempts at breaking through the ice to free them were failures. "We´re stuck in our own experiment," the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement. "We came to Antarctica

CALIFORNIA — In California, everything’s not coming up roses ? especially if you’re a family. You no longer need to live in California to get a taste of our progressive values. This week, it’s coming to a TV set near you. After more than 100 years of family-oriented entertainment on New Year’s Day, the Tournament of Roses Parade has veered off course. Organizers are allowing progressives to parade their political agendas around and morph a historic parade into an event more closely resembling a gay pride parade than the Rose Parade we have come to know. This Wednesday on New Year’s Day, the Rose Parade will showcase a

Aubrey Loots and Danny Leclair were chosen by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation by lottery to be married atop a float made to resemble a wedding cake. “The decision to allow two gay couples to ‘marry’ on a float during the Rose Parade denigrates this once family-friendly event,” said Brian Brown, president of the National Organization of Marriage. “It’s another ‘in your face’ example that

2013 was the year of ObamaCare whoppers. But the nastiest truth about the health law is still to be exposed — the tightening hold the federal government will have over your doctor, even if you´re paying with private insurance. Obama said: "You´re not going to have anybody getting in between you and your doctor in your decision-making." It was a lie from day one, just like the president´s other sales pitches. President Obama´s often-repeated claim that "if you like your health plan, you can keep your health plan" was the obvious whopper of 2013. Over 6 million people have had their plans canceled already.

The New York Times had a reporter talking to attackers on the ground during the Benghazi attacks that killed four Americans in September of 2012, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, and may know the identity of some the murderers and perpetrators. David Kirkpatrick, the Times reporter who wrote the story that forced the paper´s Editorial page editor to defensively declare on Monday that it has not chosen to endorse Hillary Clinton for president in 2016, said that the paper had a reporter on the ground who was witnessing the attacks. That admission is even in Kirpatrick´s story, which, as Breitbart News reported,

Vitamin E may slow Alzheimer´s

Researchers say vitamin E might slow the progression of mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease — the first time any treatment has been shown to alter the course of dementia at that stage. In a study of more than 600 older veterans, high doses of the vitamin delayed the decline in daily living skills, such as making meals, getting dressed and holding a conversation, by about six months over a two-year period. The benefit was equivalent to keeping one major skill that otherwise would have been lost, such as being able to bathe without help. For some people, that could mean living independently rather than needing a nursing home.

Media Bias: In the season when charity for our fellows should be in our hearts, MSNBC mocks Mitt Romney´s family Christmas photo for prominently featuring his black grandson. The real bigots are on the left. MSNBC talking head Melissa Harris-Perry, whose tastelessness extends to wearing a pair of tampons as earrings on-air in support of abortion rights, hosted a year-end segment on Sunday that soon sank into the gutter. Showing a family photo of the Romneys, with Mitt Romney´s adopted grandchild, who is black, sitting on his granddad´s lap, Harris-Perry and her pack of commentators got nasty immediately.

Several leading counter-terrorism experts fear that the two terror attacks in Volgograd, Russia that killed at least 34 people on Sunday and Monday --and another suicide bombing in nearby Pyatigorsk that killed three people Friday -- are probes in advance of a larger attack against either the Sochi Olympics or Moscow. The experts, from the offices of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington and Moscow, also say that Russia’s security services are ill-prepared to deal with the kind of small-unit operations that produced the bombings, since they have been trained to prevent massive attacks from larger,

A leading Conservative has warned that council taxpayers face rising costs from the influx of Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants set to start tomorrow - and claims that Roma are already causing trouble by begging aggressively and defecating in public. Philippa Roe, leader of Westminster City Council, said that local authorities had ´no idea´ how many Eastern Europeans would come to Britain after immigration restrictions are lifted on January 1. And a police commissioner in the Midlands revealed that more crimes are committed by Romanians than by any other group of foreign nationals in his area even before the rules have changed.

NEW YORK - Planning to use your new Obamacare insurance benefits early in the new year? If you don´t have your brand spanking new ID card, you´d better bring along your wallet. Insurers and health care providers are bracing for some chaos at the start of 2014 when the newly insured begin to use their Obamacare health coverage. Because of the repeated, last-minute deadline extensions, some applicants´ enrollments may be incomplete in insurers´ systems on Jan. 1. This is particularly true of those who wait until after the first of the year to pay. Many insurers are giving consumers until

How much do you need to know about a subject before expressing a strong opinion during a panel on MSNBC? Apparently very little, as Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart took part in a Monday afternoon discussion on the future of the Washington Redskins National Football League team since coach Mike Shanahan had just been fired. Kristen Welker -- fill-in host for that weekday´s edition of Andrea Mitchell Reports -- asked: “Are the Redskins stronger moving forward without Shanahan?” Capehart replied: “You’re asking the wrong guy here. I don’t know anything about football.” Instead, he turned to a liberal talking
