U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor will take center stage among about 1 million revelers in New York´s Times Square to usher in 2014 by pressing the button to lower the iconic countdown ball, organizers said on Sunday. New York native Sotomayor will join pop star Lady Gaga, boxing great Muhammad Ali as well as Bill and Hillary Clinton among those who have had the honor of starting the ball drop, which organizers said will be watched by an estimated 1 billion people around the world. Sotomayor was chosen for her achievements and rise from humble beginnings in the Bronx to

And it’s an ice so thick that icebreakers have been forced to turn back. Here is how Chris Tuney,a self-proclaimed, “Scientist, explorer and Writer” and a Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow and Professor of Climate Change at the University of University of New South Wales, described the “Australasian Antarctic Expedition”. The Australasian sector is dominated by the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, the largest of three ice sheets that contains enough freshwater to raise the world’s sea level by some 52 metres. Until recently it was thought this ice sheet was stable, sitting on the continental crust above today’s sea level. However there

"I have retained counsel that is preparing the paperwork to renounce the citizenship," he said, adding he expects the process to be completed in 2014. His office also confirmed the decision to CNN. Cruz has said in the past he planned to renounce his citizenship, but his latest remarks represent concrete steps he´s taking to actively do so. The first-term senator has said before that he wasn´t aware he was still legally tied

After A&E reinstated Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson on Friday, the Human Rights Campaign, which promotes gay rights, said the network gave them assurances that the Robertson family would be open to having a dialogue with blacks and the LGBT community. The group revealed they asked A&E for such meetings after it suspended Robertson for making what were deemed to be anti-gay comments in a GQ magazine interview. Fred Sainz, a Human Rights Campaign representative, told CNN that the group wanted to "thank A&E for their attentiveness and collaboration over the course of the last few weeks"

2013 Man of the Year: Jay Leno

The most inoffensive, milquetoast king of late night comedy has emerged as a hero willing to speak truth to power. Jay Leno is on his way out as the host of “The Late Show” on NBC. He’s leaving with both guns blazing, and they are aimed squarely at the most powerful institutions in the United States: television executives and President Barack Obama. Leno’s monologues, long derided by fellow comics as the “Wal-Mart” of stand-up, took a sharp turn in March when rumors began circulating that he would be replaced by Fever Pitch star Jimmy Fallon. “It’s so bad, ‘The Biggest

It isn´t the retirement George Warren dreamed of. Confined to a wheelchair and living on disability payments after losing his job, Warren, 63, figures he would be homeless in old age if not for a senior housing program offered by Catholic Charities of Maryland. "I had plans, but life had other plans for me," he says. Warren worked for decades, starting with a "sophisticated lemonade stand" he opened with friends at age 9. He paid into Social Security as he meandered through a half-dozen jobs in telecommunications and networking. But he lost his last job in what he calls an age-related

A top congressional Republican is saying a new report that concludes Al Qaeda did not carry out the 2012 attack on the U.S diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, is “misleading.” The new report published Saturday in the New York Times concludes that there was no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the assault that killed four Americans on September 11, 2012, and that it appeared that the attack was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made anti-Islamic video, as the Obama administration first claimed. Thousands of South Sudanese youths--loyal to rebel leader Riek Machar--have abandoned their march on the strategic town of Bor, officials say. South Sudan´s information minister said community leaders had persuaded most of the "White Army" fighters to go home. A UN surveillance flight earlier located the group 50 km north-east of Bor, but did not reveal its size. At least 1,000 people have died in this month´s fighting. More than 121,600 are believed to have fled their homes. Tens of thousands of civilians have sought refuge in UN camps, and reinforcements have been arriving to give them extra protection.

A closeted gay student living in West Monroe, Louisiana has written a powerful essay, criticizing the town´s most famous residents - Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson. Robertson made headlines after issuing homophobic comments in a GQ article, at one point comparing gay sex to bestiality, which got him put on suspension by the A&E network. But the network announced yesterday that they would be reinstating Robertson to the show, who so far has remained unapologetic about the comments. Because it´s not in my genetics. At the same time, hating religion is not in my DNA, either. But hating the disrespectful is instinctual for me. That´s why I hate atheists who want to do away with Christmas. And I´m not even Christian. Atheists are doing themselves a disservice. They are alienating their own breed. The analysis shows those donations heavily favored Democrats. Unless that trend is reversed, Republicans could find themselves at a disadvantage heading into the 2014 elections…. No kidding. Hundreds of pregnant foreigners are flying to Britain just days before they give birth to receive free care on the NHS. A government report found that immigration officials at one airport stopped more than 300 such mothers-to-be over two years. Most of the women had to be admitted and allowed to give birth on the NHS, the report found, because their pregnancies were too advanced for them to fly home. Airlines typically do not carry women more than 36 weeks pregnant. However, the women boarded flights in their home countries with forged doctors’ notes concealing the length of their pregnancies.

The best news from this year’s Obama Hawaiian vacation is that the Obama family did not bother to go to church on Christmas Day. The fact that Barack ignored church service on the day the world celebrates the Birthday of Jesus should come as good news to Christians because it’s a sure sign that whatever Obama is rooted in, it is not the Almighty. According to yesterday’s New York Times headline: ‘As the Obamas Celebrate Christmas, Rituals of Faith Become Less Visible’. Worship of the Almighty is written off as “rituals of faith” by the NYT. Eliot Spitzer lusted after violence, a former hooker says in a new tell-all book — revealing in graphic detail how the love gov pinned her to a bed inside a posh, Murray Hill apartment and then gripped her by the neck until she feared for her safety. The violence was scripted by Spitzer, who wanted his hooker to follow a role-play dialogue in which she would pretend she had just taken a self-defense class. The kinky politician would then pretend to test her skills by announcing, “Well, then, let’s see if you learned anything,”

On Oct. 30, as President Obama was under fire for the botched rollout of his signature health care law, he visited Boston´s Faneuil Hall. It was in that hall in 2006 that then-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, with a smiling Ted Kennedy by his side, signed a sweeping health care overhaul into law that would eventually become the model for Obamacare. As with Obamacare, the Massachusetts program (also known as Romneycare), expanded Medicaid, mandated that individuals purchase government-approved coverage, and provided subsidies to individuals to purchase government-designed insurance plans on a government-run exchange. In his October remarks, Obama used the Massachusetts

In June 1967, Israeli paratroopers entered Jerusalem´s Old City after Israel´s miraculous victory in the Six-Day War. The Old City had been under Jordanian control for nineteen years, an era of wanton destruction of synagogues and of ethnic cleansing of all Jews from the Old City. The paratroopers made their prayerful way to the Temple Mount, the holiest piece of ground in all Judaism, site of the First and Second Great Temples and, by tradition, the ark itself. Three paratroopers climbed to the top of the Dome of The Rock (built atop the former Second Temple) and unfurled the Israeli

WASHINGTON— It was a moment for Barack Obama to savor. His second inaugural address over, Obama paused as he strode from the podium last January, turning back for one last glance across the expanse of the National Mall, where a supportive throng stood in the winter chill to witness the launch of his new term. "I want to take a look, one more time," Obama said quietly. "I´m not going to see this again." There was so much Obama could not — or did not — see then, as he opened his second term with a confident call to arms

A&E capitulated to the force of public opinion. "If dialogue with Phil is not part of next steps then A+E has chosen profits over African American and gay people -- especially its employees and viewers."
