Christmastime and the Family Structure

Christmastime is an occasion for families to come together. But the family is not what it used to be, as my former American Enterprise Institute colleague Nick Schulz argues in his short AEI book "Home Economics: The Consequences of Changing Family Structure." It´s a subject that many people are uncomfortable with. "Everyone either is or knows and has a deep personal connection to someone who is divorced, cohabiting, or gay," Schulz writes. "Great numbers of people simply want to avoid awkward talk of what are seen as primarily personal issues or issues of individual morality."

On the fifth floor of a high-rise block on a decaying East European housing estate, a gipsy family pack their bags to flee the country where they live but are despised. [Snip] Izabel, 27, her face pinched with poverty, says: ‘I’ve relatives in Sheffield, Bradford and Kent. My brother, in Dover, has ten children and, ideally, we would like to join him there.’ Then, she adds a question that sums up the fears of many Britons over an influx of European Roma heading for the UK: ‘Do you think your Government might give us a free house?’

The Mount Pleasant man who gained national fame for cleaning the Washington Mall during the government budget shutdown says he´s going to hit up members of Congress to join his effort. [Snip] As Cox sees it, multiple members of both houses praised him under the media limelight for his work. Now it´s time for them to pay it forward by adding their names to fundraising efforts and opening doors, he said. Cox became a national celebrity after the Washington media focused on his unilateral efforts to mow the grass, clean up trash and clear other debris from the city´s tourism

India is checking the tax status of Americans working at schools in the country, after the arrest this month of an Indian diplomat in New York. Devyani Khobragade was handcuffed and strip-searched while in custody. [Snip] India would no longer turn a blind eye to tax violations by diplomats´ spouses taking up work in the country, Reuters cited an unnamed official as saying. Delhi has also withdrawn some privileges enjoyed by American diplomats and their families in the country, added the official. "Spouses and children have no more immunity. Supporters of Egypt´s Islamist Muslim Brotherhood have set fire to university buildings in Cairo, state TV says. One protester was shot dead as students fought police at Al Azhar University, health ministry officials said. Fires were set in the business faculty, where exams had to be postponed, and the agriculture faculty. Authorities have cracked down on the Brotherhood since July, when Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who belongs to the group, was deposed by the army. The Brotherhood, which had been banned since September from all activity, was declared a terrorist group on Wednesday following a suicide bombing of a police headquarters in Nile Delta. The

Iraqi forces have arrested an MP, killing his brother and at least three of his guards during a raid on his home in the western city of Ramadi. Ahmed al-Awlani, a member of the Sunni community, had backed protests against the mainly Shia government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and was reportedly wanted on terrorism charges. When Barack Obama rose to national prominence following his 2004 keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, his African-American heritage was a footnote to the fawning reception he received from the media and from most Americans. While the speech was not a case study in brilliant oratory, Illinois State Senator Barack Obama exuded charisma and eloquently discussed an appealing if not particularly original theme of unity and bipartisanship. Fast forward to today. President Obama´s race is no longer a footnote. It is central to his presidency. It is arguably his defining characteristic. Unity and bipartisanship are nowhere to be found. The Italian premiere of “12 Years a Slave” officially kicked off Italy’s 18th annual Capri Hollywood film festival on Friday without talent in tow, following controversy sparked by the pic’s teaser posters that placed the focus on Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender rather than Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of the film. As previously reported, Italo distributor BIM Distribuzione, which will release the Steve McQueen-helmed drama in Italy on Feb. 20, has apologized, pulled the posters that sparked a racial discrimination uproar on the Internet, and announced they will be using the original U.S. materials for “Slave,” translated into Italian, for

No politician had a greater impact on the past year than freshman U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). Cruz came from the Lone Star State not owing the D.C. political establishment anything, after he beat the chosen replacement for Kay Bailey Hutchison in an underfunded, grassroots driven Republican primary election. Using his historic first speech on the Senate floor to support Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s quest to force the Obama administration to agree not to use drones to kill Americans on American soil, Cruz showed he would sacrifice personal glory for the cause of liberty. Ignoring the fact that the hip hop star has become something of an icon for supporters of recreational marijuana use, Kerry raised a friendly fist toward Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dogg) during a moment of cameraderie at a White House reception. The rapper quickly responded by sticking out his own fist, then celebrated the collision of two worlds with a victory dance. He posted a video of the unprecedented bump on his Instagram. In what Entertainment Weekly calls a "Hail Mary" move, reports that A&E has backed down in its confrontation with Robertson family patriarch Phil Robertson come with an announcement that the network will also be producing a series of PSAs “promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people.” In Entertainment Weekly´s view, A&E found itself in a place where it could be accused of being hostile to both the Bible and traditional Christianity. While market forces may have ultimately won the day, clearly the public relations concerns still matter to the network; hence the portion of their announcement stressing the coming

Washington – U.S. President Barack Obama might wish he could take back 2013, although it’s doubtful he could change anything. He began the year promising to transform America into a more economically egalitarian and socially conscious society. He ended it with apologies and empty words. A modest gun control law, tax reform, immigration reform, a budget, all failed in 2013. (Snip) The most telling indication of Obama’s failure is the national income gap. A study by Berkeley economist Emmanuel Saez shows that since the 2008 recession incomes of the top 1 per cent grew 31 per cent while the other 99 per

The U.S. Marine Corps has quietly walked back a 2012 directive from the service´s highest-ranking officer that would have rejected female recruits and officer candidates who can´t perform three chin-ups as part of their physical fitness training. The reason – 55 per cent of the women attempting the test are failing. Just one per cent of men can´t complete the exercise. ´Women aren’t able to make the minimum standard of three pull-ups,´ Marine spokesman Capt. Eric Flanagan told reporters on Friday. The startling admission, and the military´s course-correction, came after just three out of 15 females successfully graduated from the

Washington- An overriding question of "who is this guy" can be felt in the room when Tommy Wells stands to take the open microphone at an event about the racial disparities in Washington drug arrests. The council member is addressing an eclectic, racially diverse crowd: a mix of people personally affected by racial profiling and white 20-somethings with tight jeans and button-covered backpacks. Wells, a suit-clad, oval-faced, gray-haired, white politician stands out. "I am Council Member Tommy Wells," he said, before launching into a five-minute mellow talk about the effect of the district´s drug laws and the need to decriminalize

It is almost unbelievable that Al Franken, a washed-up former comedian and reformed (I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt) coke-head with serious anger management issues, was elected to the Senate in 2008 from Minnesota, a state he hadn’t lived in for several decades. (“Elected” despite the fact that he almost certainly received fewer legal votes than Norm Coleman.) It is even more unbelievable that Franken stands an excellent chance of being re-elected next year, only because there is no strong Republican candidate on the horizon. Still, Franken isn’t taking any chances, given his mediocre approval ratings and the

The TSA is well-known for being too aggressive in its body searches, so it shouldn’t be surprising in the Obama years that the TSA has a web page titled “Transgender Travelers: Special Considerations.” “TSA recognizes the concerns members of the transgender community may have with undergoing the security screening process at our Nation’s airports and is committed to conducting screening in a dignified and respectful manner,” they promise. First, they reasonably suggest that your birth date, name, and gender on your reservation match your government ID (“Cisgender oppressors!”) Making Reservations: Secure Flight requires airlines to collect a traveler’s full name,

CNN contributor Marc Lamont Hill spoke out loudly against A&E’s decision to effectively lift it’s “suspension” of Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson. While he said he’s not “surprised” they made the decision to keep filming with the whole Robertson family, Hill found that decision “morally reprehensible.” “They had to make some sort of gesture to make people happy,” Hill said of the network, “and they did that with the suspension which essentially meant nothing.” Just a Bible network wouldn’t want a “card-carrying atheist” to represent them, he continued, A&E should be able to keep a “card-carrying homophobe” off its air

If you thought the political press was taking stock of its 2012 election year coverage of Mitt Romney’s campaign and was preparing to make some course corrections in order to ensure fairer coverage of the GOP candidates ahead of 2016, you would be mistaken. Indeed, the New York Times appears to view 2012 not as an aberration but as a model for how to cover future Republican presidential campaigns. The first indication that the Times is gearing up to make a Mitt Romney out of Chris Christie came in early December as “bridge-gate,” the allegation that New Jersey’s governor sought
