Mitt Romney: Badly

If you thought the political press was taking stock of its 2012 election year coverage of Mitt Romney’s campaign and was preparing to make some course corrections in order to ensure fairer coverage of the GOP candidates ahead of 2016, you would be mistaken. Indeed, the New York Times appears to view 2012 not as an aberration but as a model for how to cover future Republican presidential campaigns. The first indication that the Times is gearing up to make a Mitt Romney out of Chris Christie came in early December as “bridge-gate,” the allegation that New Jersey’s governor sought

President Obama is “simply not serious” about nuclear negotiations with Iran and “the Iranians know it,” Charles Krauthammer said Friday following Tehran’s announcement of a new generation of equipment to enrich uranium. “The only surprising thing here is that the Iranians are so confident about how supine Obama is on this that they stick a finger in his eye and announce it publicly,” Krauthammer said on “Special Report with Bret Baier.” The syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor said that as for Iran’s six-month nuclear deal with the U.S. and other world powers, “there is nothing in the agreement that

A Tennessee health food store owner who claimed that three men beat him and robbed his store in an anti-gay attack was arrested for filing a false police report, according to The Paris (Tenn.) Post-Intelligencer. Joe Williams claimed that days before Thanksgiving he was beaten by the three men outside of his store. The men, who he claimed were wearing ski masks during the attack, also allegedly robbed the store of $1,500, and doused it in gasoline. They also scrawled an anti-gay message on Williams’ forehead, and yelled anti-gay slurs at during the attack. As is protocol

Connecticut police released thousands of pages Friday from their investigation into the Newtown massacre, providing the most detailed and disturbing picture yet of the rampage and Adam Lanza´s fascination with murder, while also depicting school employees´ brave and clear-headed attempts to protect the children. Among the details: More than a dozen bodies, mostly children, were seen packed "like sardines" in a bathroom. And the horrors inside school were so terrible that when police sent in paramedics, they tried to select ones capable of handling what they were about to witness. 2013’s lesson for conservatives

This report on the State of Conservatism comes at the end of an annus mirabilis for conservatives. In 2013, they learned that they may have been wasting much time and effort. Hitherto, they have thought that the most efficient way to evangelize the unconverted was to write and speak, exhorting those still shrouded in darkness to read conservatism’s most light-shedding texts. Now they know that a quicker, surer method is to have progressives wield power for a few years. This will validate the core conservative insight about the mischiefs that ensue when governments demonstrate their incapacity for supplanting with fiats

Hans Riegel recently died at age 90. He changed the world for the better. He brought us gummy bears, giving pleasure to millions of people. Politicians routinely crusade against wealth and inequality, but much of that occurs naturally when people create products and offer services benefiting the rest of us. Today people live on their cell phones. Once we didn´t even have telephones. Thank Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, Scotland. The internal combustion engine-powered auto came from Karl Benz. He was a design engineer who in 1886 won a patent for a "motor car." In 1903, Clarence Crane created a hard fruit candy,

Philadelphia ´What you´re seeing is how a civilization commits suicide," says Camille Paglia. This self-described "notorious Amazon feminist" isn´t telling anyone to Lean In or asking Why Women Still Can´t Have It All. No, her indictment may be as surprising as it is wide-ranging: The military is out of fashion, Americans undervalue manual labor, schools neuter male students, opinion makers deny the biological differences between men and women, and sexiness is dead. And that´s just 20 minutes of our three-hour conversation. When Ms. Paglia, now 66, burst onto the national stage in 1990 with the publishing of "Sexual Personae," she immediately established

First they came for our light bulbs. Before the onset of ObamaCare and its mandate to buy health insurance as a condition of citizenship, there was the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), one of the first things Democrats took up on retaking the House of Representatives in the 2006 elections. A well-intentioned President George W. Bush signed the incandescent bulb ban in

It is timely and important that we not wait until then to begin having constructive discussions about who should be given the opportunity and responsibility to succeed President Barack Obama.(snip)Let’s be clear: they should not be elected because they are women; they should be elected because they are qualified to lead our nation. And those who profess to have a problem with electing two women didn’t complain when we’ve elected two men throughout the history of this nation. A century of black American Islam

The year 2013 marks the centenary of the reported founding of the Canaanite Temple in Newark, N.J. That was the very earliest form of an indigenous black American Islam, one completely distinct from normative Islam, the 1,400-year-old religion from Arabia founded by Muhammad. From this movement came Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan. The century divides into two main eras: inventing a new religion (1913-1975) and moving toward normative Islam (1975-2013). Timothy Drew (1886-1929), an American black who called himself Noble Drew Ali, founded the Newark temple and then, in 1925 another,

In some parts of the world, Herod’s massacre of the innocents is a living tradition. On Christmas Day in Iraq, 37 people were killed in bomb attacks in Christian districts of Baghdad. Radical Islamists mark — and stain — the season with brutality and intolerance. Across North Africa and the greater Middle East, anti-Christian pressure has grown during the past few decades, sometimes subtle, sometimes overt. This persecution has gained recent attention from the archbishop of Canterbury and the pope. “We won’t resign ourselves,” says Pope Francis, “to a Middle East without Christians.” The violence, of course, is not restricted

Agusta - The toilets behind David Labbe’s home on the city’s east side were snow-filled last week, icicles hanging from their tanks. Mad over Augusta officials’ decision to reject a zoning change that would have enabled a Dunkin’ Donuts developer to buy his 1 Davenport St. property, Labbe, a plumber, got national headlines earlier this year by putting commodes behind his home to protest his neighbors’ opposition to the plan. The Kennebec Journal broke his story in October: Then, Labbe had a sign alongside five toilets saying he wanted between 60 and 70 more. In an interview then, he told a reporter he thought he could put 100 toilets on

Satellites orbiting the planet and astronauts aboard the International Space Station often take pictures of volcano eruptions, hurricanes and other examples of nature’s fury. And now NASA has rounded up the most spectacular images taken from space all year. The images also include some of the most beautiful sights our planet has to offer – from Princess Charlotte Bay, in Australia, to the surprising beauty of Reno, Nevada’s city lights set against the mountains that surround it.

Several Obamacare exchanges in states that didn´t participate in the healthcare.gov fiasco are now having so much trouble with their own health insurance websites that they´re withholding payments to their biggest IT contractor--and it´s the same company that botched the federal government´s insurance portal. CGI Group, the Montreal company behind the White House´s error-prone, $677 million online white elephant, is under fire in Massachusetts, Vermont and Hawaii after those states´ Affordable Care Act websites suffered from some of the same problems that first made Obamacare a late-night punchline in October. Hayes, of Callis Oval, then allegedly stabbed Delaney in the chest, officials said. Delaney was treated for non life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Hayes was charged with felonious assault, police said.

Arabs don’t trust Obama either. As 2013 ends, President Obama has lost credibility with many people who trusted him at the start of the year. Thanks to the Healthcare.gov debacle, polls find support for the president among women and independents has dropped to the lowest ebb of his presidency. Obama´s words -- promising Americans they could keep their doctors under his health care plan -- didn’t match his deeds. Surprisingly, the same thing is happening on the other side of the world among Arabs in the Middle East and for the same reason.

In the fashion world, Anna Wintour is a woman of extraordinary power. It is her raised eyebrow or approving nod that will determine whether orange becomes the new mauve, jeggings the new culottes. But there is one area, we suspect, where her diktats will go ignored. In removing the Christmas tree from the family home, on account of how messy it makes the room look, she ignores the whole point of Christmas. By this stage of the festive season, many homes--if not most--are defined by their mess, from fragments of wrapping paper to discarded pine needles, from toys eagerly seized
