New York Soon to

ALBANY — New York, whose status as the most populous state has long been ceded, will soon fall behind Florida into fourth place, a long-anticipated drop that is rife with symbolism and that could carry potentially serious economic consequences in coming years. When the Census Bureau releases its latest population estimates on Monday, demographers expect that Florida and New York will be narrowly separated — perhaps by as little as a few thousand people — and that if Florida does not pass New York this time, it almost certainly will do so in 2014. The census figures underscore immigration trends, as foreign-born migrants continue to

North Charleston police arrested a woman Christmas morning after she reportedly stabbed a man with a ceramic squirrel in an argument over beer. Helen Williams, 44, of Clifton Street, is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, Charleston County jail records show. Police officers were called to Clifton Street shortly after midnight Wednesday concerning the stabbing, an incident report states. [Snip] Officers noticed scratches on the man´s face and a large amount of blood was smeared across his upper body and down his arms. A deep cut marred the man´s shoulder and chest, police said.

Anna Wintour throws out family

Covered with tinsel, kitsch baubles and with a frizzy, unkempt hemline that sheds pine-needles everywhere, the humble Christmas tree is just ‘so last year’. That, it seems, is the verdict of Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor-in-chief whose love of sharp lines and clean spaces has caused her to throw out the family Christmas tree this year, even before the festivities had begun. “My mom threw out our tree before Christmas Day because ‘it was too messy’”, wrote her 26-year-old daughter, Bee Shaffer, posting a picture online of a lonely collection of presents piled against a wall where a tree had once stood.

MSNBC´s Taylor: Republicans ´Almost

On Thursday´s PoliticsNation on MSNBC, during a discussion of Republican resistance to extending unemployment benefits, MSNBC political analyst Goldie Taylor charged that the GOP "almost single-handedly blew up this economy," and that, after they "blew up" the "bridge" with "dynamite," that Republicans "dared people to cross to the other side of the canyon on their own." After host Al Sharpton played several soundbites of Republican elected officials and complained that they "act as though they´re dependents, that they´re some kind of beggars," he turned to Taylor who responded: You know, this is a party who almost single-handedly blew up this economy. In a Monday, December 23 write-up, Associated Press National Writer Jocelyn Noveck went so over-the-top in her awe at Miley Cyrus´s ability to attract attention during 2013 that she called her "this year´s pop-culture prom queen," and included a mention of Cyrus in her rundown of "pop culture moments" during every month of the year. As I noted earlier this morning (at NewsBusters; at BizzyBlog), a few days after Noveck went all-Miley, all-the-time, an AP report noted that the wire service could only round up 70 responses from thousands of subscribing news organizations to its "Entertainer of the Year" survey. MSNBC, the station that had employed a host that suggested someone should urinate and defecate in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin´s mouth, blasted Palin on Thursday for having a Christmas tree in her home on Christmas. In a segment that was stranger than fiction on The Ed Show, guest-host Joy Reid claimed Palin was going against the Bible by displaying a Christmas tree in her home when she was interviewed for a Fox & Friends Christmas special. "Certain parts of the Bible also appear to preach against let’s say, I don’t know, Christmas trees," Reid said, according to a Newsbusters

NEW YORK — A federal judge on Friday found that the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of millions of Americans’ telephone records is legal and a valuable part of the nation’s arsenal to counter the threat of terrorism. U.S. District Judge William Pauley said in a written opinion that the program “represents the government’s counter-punch” to eliminate al-Qaida’s terror network by connecting fragmented and fleeting communications. In ruling, the judge noted the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and how the phone data-collection system could have helped investigators connect the dots before the attacks occurred. “The government learned from its mistake and

A petition to end Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson´s indefinite suspension following anti-gay comments he made in a recent interview reached its goal of 250,000 signatures early Friday morning, roughly one week after the petition was created. Faith Driven Consumer´s "IStandWithPhil" petition had 252,918 signatures as of early Friday morning. The Christian advocacy group is demanding that Duck Dynasty network A&E reinstate Robertson, who was placed on indefinite suspension after he expressed his views about homosexuality and race relations to GQ in its January issue. The organization also asks that the network issue a formal apology to Robertson´s family and

If a panic button existed in the offices of vulnerable Democrats in Congress right now, they might be pressing it so often it wouldn’t have time to reset. A new CNN poll this week found that support for Obamacare is down to an all-time low of 35 percent. That helps explain the dramatic partisan reversal in another question CNN asked — about which party respondents would vote for in their congressional district. Two months ago, Democrats had a 50–42 percent lead on that critical “generic ballot” question. Now, Republicans have taken a 49–44 lead. Other private polls taken in the

A&E´s indefinite suspension of "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson over his comments regarding homosexuality, and the subsequent backlash, is an important cultural moment in American life. For the first time in decades, traditionally religious Americans have come out of the closet en masse to speak out against anti-religious bigotry from proponents of gay rights. This, in turn, has made many on both the right and left uncomfortable: uncomfortable with a loud and proud segment of religious believers standing up for the expression of Biblical views, and uncomfortable with the notion of such religious believers being allotted a seat at the

Menendez said Thursday that he sent FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez a letter asking her if the agency needs more congressional authority to hold retailers accountable for failures to protect consumers’ information. “Our country’s consumers depend upon safe and secure transactions, and especially at this crucial time of year, our country’s retailers must commit to fulfilling that expectation,” Menendez wrote. “Unfortunately, these data breaches are becoming increasingly common.” Target admitted to a data breach earlier this month that affected nearly

PARIS - France is considering banning performances by a black comedian whose shows have repeatedly insulted the memory of Holocaust victims and could threaten public order, Interior Minister Manuel Valls said on Friday. He said his ministry is studying legal ways to ban shows by Dieudonne M´bala M´bala, a comedian repeatedly fined for hate speech who ran in the 2009 European Parliament elections at the head of an "Anti-Zionist List" including far-right activists. Valls announced the move after Jewish groups complained to President Francois Hollande about Dieudonne´s trademark straight-arm gesture, which they call a "Nazi salute in reverse" and link

Yes, I mean you, the people of the United States, where an elite of non-democratic dictators trickles its immorality—and incompetence—down upon the masses. What do I mean? Aren’t you Americans supposed to be free? Sure, you are free: You are free to obey the ukase—that’s an old czarist word for a decree that must be obeyed, or else—of a judge acting on an ideological agenda. So the judge is free to do as he pleases, and then you are free to do what you’re told to do. Americans, how do

The Chamber of Commerce is planning to spend at least $50 million on a campaign to boost establishment Republicans in primaries against Tea Party challengers, according to The Wall Street Journal. The group´s broader aim is to help the GOP win Senate control and block Tea Party Republican candidates who might lose otherwise winnable seats to Democrats. "Our No. 1 focus is to make sure, when it comes to the Senate, that we have no loser candidates," Chamber political strategist Scott Reed tells the Journal. ´It is as painful perhaps to be awakened from a vision as to be born," James Joyce wrote famously in his masterpiece "Ulysses." I recently had such an experience when my office manager—who protects me from the daily insurance grind of referrals and approvals and pre-certifications and blood drawing—was out sick. Thus the veil was lifted from my eyes, and I awoke to the harsh realities of our medical future. One patient was severely depressed and needed medication and a referral to a psychiatrist. Another was having trouble breathing from asthma that requires inhalers. A third had a faded rash on

Is Donald Trump the conservative version of Nelson Rockefeller? The Rich Guy with unimaginable name-ID, talent and endless energy who would love to be President of the United States and possessing what some will say is all but one credential? That missing credential being major elective office? Coincidentally, Mr. Trump, who recently met with New York Conservative Party leaders making the case for a Trump gubernatorial candidacy, is, like the late four-term New York, Governor Rockefeller, a life-long New Yorker. The real deal. In Trump’s case hailing from the precincts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Interrupting their vacation on Thursday, two Democrats -- Sen. Jack Reed of R.I. and Rep. The cost of a three-month extension is around $6.5 billion. Losing jobless benefits is like being hit by an "economic hurricane," said Rep. Levin, who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee. "And so that's the reason why, in the past -- much more often than not -- there has not been a pay-for.

Earlier today, I noted a CNN poll that has the GOP out front on the generic Congressional preference question by five points, 49%/44%. When Republicans are on the short end of such polls–as, for example, after the recent partial government slowdown–there is no shortage of advice from the media. Move to the center! Get rid of those “radicals!” Become Democrats! Note, however, the deafening silence when the Democrats are trailing in the same polls. That doesn’t mean, of course, that the Dems aren’t paying attention. Within a few hours after the CNN poll came out, the Democrats’ “Rapid Response” team
