Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling on United Parcel Service to refund customers who sent packages and gifts that failed to reach their destinations before Christmas. A rash of bad weather and a rush of last-minute online orders caught postal and package delivery services off guard, meaning that thousands of packages that were supposed to be delivered before Christmas didn´t arrive on time. "I am disappointed to learn that so many consumers in Connecticut and across the country made purchases this holiday season expecting their gifts to arrive in time for Christmas, but instead were left empty-handed," the Connecticut Democrat said. More than seven months after a young mother fought off and killed a home intruder in Washington state, the King County Sheriff´s Office released documents indicating the dead attacker "may have intended to commit an abduction and sexual assault." Moreover, it appears he was planning to videotape the whole thing. According to The Seattle Times, when 48-year old Ken Boonstra broke into a 26-year old woman´s North Bend home on May 13, he "had a camera and a flexible tripod in one pocket." He also had "a roll of duck tape and a flashlight."

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin said Sunday that Obamacare “absolutely” is at risk of undergoing a “meltdown” and crashing to the ground. “I’ve only asked for one thing. I said listen, I’m not worried about the glitches, computer glitches. We’ll fix that sooner or later. I’m worried about having the product that the market will buy. And we’re not letting people shop. So with that being said, myself and Mark Kirk introduced a bill. The only bipartisan bill that says why don’t we wait basically before we put any crimes or fines until January 1, 2015,” Manchin said on CNN. “This

Appearing on MSNBC on Thursday, Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) scolded her colleagues in Congress for failing to extend unemployment benefits for long-term jobless before they expire at the end of the year. Moore said that she hoped to see “rage” from Americans over the lapse of unemployment benefits in the same way Americans revolted over the prospect of intervening in the Syrian civil war. Asked about the end of unemployment benefits for millions of Americans, Moore said that there was a perception issue among many that long-term unemployed are “lazy.” She said that even those with advanced degrees are suffering as

Journalist Glenn Greenwald appeared on MSNBC Thursday, one day after Edward Snowden delivered a Christmas address to television viewers in the UK and around the world from Russia. Things got heated when MSNBC anchor Kristen Welker cited critics who’ve accused Greenwald of “crossing a line” in his defense of Snowden. “What do you say to your critics who say you’ve become more of a spokesman for Edward Snowden?” she asked. “I think that’s ludicrous is what I say to that,” Greenwald shot back. “Every journalist has an agenda. We’re on MSNBC now, where close to 24 hours a day the agenda of President Obama

WEST READING, Pa. — A terminally ill girl who received support from thousands of Christmas carolers outside her home over the weekend died early on Christmas morning, her family said. Delaney Brown, 8, of West Reading "passed away quietly with her loving family by her side," family spokesman Christopher Winters said in a statement Wednesday. On Saturday night, thousands gathered outside her home in eastern Pennsylvania to fulfill her wish for a huge holiday singalong. The crowd cycled through holiday favorites such as "Frosty the Snowman," ´´Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells" and ended with a

During a year in review segment on Thursday, MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell and NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd began by examining how the implementation of the Affordable Care Act has altered the American political landscape. All agreed that the insurance industry has been unhelpful for the White House by citing the ACA and blaming the President Barack Obama for problematic aspects of the nation’s health care system that he was “trying to fix.” The discussion began with an acknowledgement of Obama’s diminished status at the end of 2013. Asked how Obama can reverse his waning influence and

With the deadline to sign up for Obamacare having come and gone, many Americans have decided to “opt out” of President Obama’s signature health care reform law, choosing instead to pay the $95 penalty for sidestepping the individual mandate. “For many Americans opting out of Obamacare is the best decision they can make, but it´s important that they do it the right way—just refusing to buy health insurance and not having another way to pay for catastrophic medical expenses is a mistake,” Sean Parnell, author of the newly-released The Self-Pay Patient, told Breitbart News. “People who want to opt out

CHARLOTTE – If you like your president, you can keep your president. Period! That’s the mantra for 2016 as the all-too-early-but-never-ending speculation about Hillary Clinton’s run for the roses of the White House continues to be the eternal flame of politics. Electing Hillary Clinton president would be little more than re-electing Barack Obama…in a skirt. Maybe worse. (That is only a description, mind you, since Hillary doesn’t even have a skirt in her closet.) ‘Tis the season of love and forgiveness. The Obamas and Clintons are taking a little time away from the spotlight of controversy to regroup as

PHILADELPHIA - A Pennsylvania appeals court has ruled that a Roman Catholic Church official was wrongly convicted for his handling of priest sex-abuse complaints. The unanimous decision released Thursday by the state Superior Court also dismisses the criminal case against Monsignor William Lynn, a Philadelphia area priest. Lynn has been serving three to six years in prison after his child-endangerment conviction last year. Prosecutors had argued that Lynn reassigned predators to new parishes in Philadelphia when he was secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004. Lynn’s conviction stems from the case of one priest, Edward Avery, found to have abused

WASHINGTON — Even as President Obama’s health insurance website limps to recovery, at least two states that used the same contractor and are still plagued with malfunctions — Massachusetts and Vermont — are taking preliminary steps to recoup taxpayer dollars. Massachusetts officials are reviewing legal options against CGI Group, a Montreal-based information technology company, and will make recommendations on how to seek financial redress at a Jan. 9 meeting. So far, the state has paid $11 million of its $69 million contract with CGI. It will not pay a penny more until a functioning website has been delivered, said Jason

Officials in Massachusetts and Vermont are withholding payments to a primary ObamaCare contractor over the problem-plagued healthcare rollout. The Boston Globe reported on Thursday that, in addition to halting new payments to the CGI Group, officials in both states are weighing their legal options against the company in a potential effort to recoup taxpayer dollars. CGI is the largest ObamaCare contractor and was primarily responsible for developing HealthCare.gov. Massachusetts has so far paid $11 million of its $69 million contract, according to the Globe report, while Vermont owes the company $5 million and is disputing an additional $1 million. In

Last month, staff at Catania’s opera house staged a funeral in suitably operatic fashion, carrying a coffin through the center of the packed auditorium. The performance wasn’t a dramatic staging idea: it was a funeral for the opera house itself. That’s because this stunning house, where opera has been performed since the late 1800s, is in deep financial trouble. The Teatro Massimo Bellini – named after the Sicilian city’s most famous son, the bel canto opera composer Vincenzo Bellini – can’t afford to pay visiting artists or even its own musicians. At a recent international opera competition, the orchestra went on strike

In the great tradition of American civil disobedience, President Barack Obama is defying a law. It’s just one that he himself lobbied for, signed, and lost a house of Congress over. Even Henry David Thoreau would be hard-pressed to understand this one. The famous dissenter refused to pay a tax because of his opposition to the Mexican-American War and slavery; presumably, though, he would have been willing to comply with the provisions of something called ThoreauCare. President Obama is in a much more awkward spot. At every turn, he is confronted by the irrationalities and inconveniences of his own health-care law. Not
