Andrea Mitchell, Chuck Todd Blast
Insurance Industry for Laying Their
Failures at Obama’s Feet

During a year in review segment on Thursday, MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell and NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd began by examining how the implementation of the Affordable Care Act has altered the American political landscape. All agreed that the insurance industry has been unhelpful for the White House by citing the ACA and blaming the President Barack Obama for problematic aspects of the nation’s health care system that he was “trying to fix.” The discussion began with an acknowledgement of Obama’s diminished status at the end of 2013. Asked how Obama can reverse his waning influence and

With the deadline to sign up for Obamacare having come and gone, many Americans have decided to “opt out” of President Obama’s signature health care reform law, choosing instead to pay the $95 penalty for sidestepping the individual mandate. “For many Americans opting out of Obamacare is the best decision they can make, but it´s important that they do it the right way—just refusing to buy health insurance and not having another way to pay for catastrophic medical expenses is a mistake,” Sean Parnell, author of the newly-released The Self-Pay Patient, told Breitbart News. “People who want to opt out

Hillary and Barack: Peas in

CHARLOTTE – If you like your president, you can keep your president. Period! That’s the mantra for 2016 as the all-too-early-but-never-ending speculation about Hillary Clinton’s run for the roses of the White House continues to be the eternal flame of politics. Electing Hillary Clinton president would be little more than re-electing Barack Obama…in a skirt. Maybe worse. (That is only a description, mind you, since Hillary doesn’t even have a skirt in her closet.) ‘Tis the season of love and forgiveness. The Obamas and Clintons are taking a little time away from the spotlight of controversy to regroup as

PHILADELPHIA - A Pennsylvania appeals court has ruled that a Roman Catholic Church official was wrongly convicted for his handling of priest sex-abuse complaints. The unanimous decision released Thursday by the state Superior Court also dismisses the criminal case against Monsignor William Lynn, a Philadelphia area priest. Lynn has been serving three to six years in prison after his child-endangerment conviction last year. Prosecutors had argued that Lynn reassigned predators to new parishes in Philadelphia when he was secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004. Lynn’s conviction stems from the case of one priest, Edward Avery, found to have abused

Geopolitics: It´s always questionable when a nation that can´t keep its lights on goes on a military spending spree. So now Argentina has just launched a new space rocket to "recover" its defense capacity. This won´t end well. Last Friday, Argentina´s air force launched a research rocket connected to its space program that its defense minister called "a milestone," according to a report in Mercopress. What´s really going on, though, was spilled by Argentina´s defense minister, Agustin Rossi, who called it a "step toward the recovery of scientific-technological capabilities for defense" and hailed it as "of the utmost importance." Gustavo Centurion, a medical official, said the attack was “very aggressive,” according to Sky News. At least 70 people were injured, The Associated Press reports. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei marked Christmas Day with social media messages tying Jesus into political rhetoric directed at the United States. “If Christ were among us today, he would not spare even a single moment to fight the leaders of despotism and global arrogance,” he said on Facebook, using the Islamic Republic’s favored term for America. “Nor would he tolerate hunger and wandering of millions of people, degenerated by the hegemonic and colonialist powers into war, corruption, and violence,” he added. On Twitter, Khamenei tweeted another message containing a veiled dig at the U.S.: “Jesus Christ was a minister of a

In a videotaped weekly address, in which he was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama said that performing works of charity during the Christmas season gives Americans "a chance to celebrate the birth of Christ and live out what he taught us." "So many people all across the country are helping out at soup kitchens, buying gifts for children in need, or organizing food or clothing drives for their neighbors," said Obama in the address. WASHINGTON — Even as President Obama’s health insurance website limps to recovery, at least two states that used the same contractor and are still plagued with malfunctions — Massachusetts and Vermont — are taking preliminary steps to recoup taxpayer dollars. Massachusetts officials are reviewing legal options against CGI Group, a Montreal-based information technology company, and will make recommendations on how to seek financial redress at a Jan. 9 meeting. So far, the state has paid $11 million of its $69 million contract with CGI. It will not pay a penny more until a functioning website has been delivered, said Jason

The Boston Globe reported on Thursday that, in addition to halting new payments to the CGI Group, officials in both states are weighing their legal options against the company in a potential effort to recoup taxpayer dollars. CGI is the largest ObamaCare contractor and was primarily responsible for developing HealthCare.gov. Massachusetts has so far paid $11 million of its $69 million contract, according to the Globe report, while Vermont owes the company $5 million and is disputing an additional $1 million. In

There are some terrible people in this world. And you are safer when your trusted neighbors have firearms.” His memo is part

Last month, staff at Catania’s opera house staged a funeral in suitably operatic fashion, carrying a coffin through the center of the packed auditorium. The performance wasn’t a dramatic staging idea: it was a funeral for the opera house itself. That’s because this stunning house, where opera has been performed since the late 1800s, is in deep financial trouble. The Teatro Massimo Bellini – named after the Sicilian city’s most famous son, the bel canto opera composer Vincenzo Bellini – can’t afford to pay visiting artists or even its own musicians. At a recent international opera competition, the orchestra went on strike

The New York Times reports that the United States is quietly rushing dozens of Hellfire missiles and low-tech surveillance drones to Iraq “to help government forces combat an explosion of violence by a Qaeda-backed insurgency that is gaining territory in both western Iraq and neighboring Syria.” This happens in the context of the deaths of more than 8,000 Iraqis in 2013, the highest level of violence since 2008. The Times’s Michael Gordon and Eric Schmitt write, “Al Qaeda’s regional affiliate, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, has become a potent force in northern and western Iraq… The surge in violence

In the great tradition of American civil disobedience, President Barack Obama is defying a law. It’s just one that he himself lobbied for, signed, and lost a house of Congress over. Even Henry David Thoreau would be hard-pressed to understand this one. The famous dissenter refused to pay a tax because of his opposition to the Mexican-American War and slavery; presumably, though, he would have been willing to comply with the provisions of something called ThoreauCare. President Obama is in a much more awkward spot. At every turn, he is confronted by the irrationalities and inconveniences of his own health-care law. Not

Most knockout victims that have appeared in news reports have been white, but the Justice Department said in this instance the victim was a 79-year-old black man, and stepped in with federal charges. “Suspected crimes of this nature will simply not be tolerated,” said Kenneth Magidson, the U.S. attorney for the southern district of Texas. “Evidence of hate crimes will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted with

Among the roughly 300 killed during intense fighting in Aleppo was Molhem Barakat, a Reuters photographer. Barakat´s death last Friday, in the indiscriminate barrage on Aleppo that the White House criticized Monday, has raised serious questions about Reuters´ hiring practice. Hannah Lucinda Smith, a British freelance photojournalist and acquaintance of Barakat, writes that Barakat tried to join Al Qaeda. According to Smith, Barakat wanted to join the terrorist organization for the 11,000 Syrian lira monthly salary. "It is a pitiful wage for a potential suicide bomber, but enough to tempt an eighteen-year-old stuck in a war zone with no job." Barakat reportedly told

Are you as racist about this one as you were the previous two -- I mean one? Actually, I think he´s always been rather bronze, don´t you -- as in third rate?
