Like children straining to behave in anticipation of Santa’s arrival, Congress capped off a year of acrimony by agreeing this week, with uncharacteristic civility, to a modest $85 billion budget deal that eases the automatic sequester cuts and avoids another government shutdown. This news has generally been greeted as a sign that the parties may finally be ready to lay down their arms and move beyond the hostility and dysfunction that has characterized national politics for the last five years. Call me Scrooge, but I’m not not buying it. There’s something else going on that will play a big role

MIAMI - The nation´s already backlogged immigration courts might soon be thrown into more havoc as roughly half of their 220 judges will be eligible for retirement next year. The Executive Office for Immigration Review, which oversees the nation´s 59 immigration courts, says the court already has 32 vacancies, contributing to the current backlog of nearly 350,000 cases. Judges are overwhelmed, and immigrants with legitimate asylum claims can spend years in legal limbo. Meanwhile, immigrants without legitimate legal claims remain in the country, while Americans foot the bill for them to be locked up longer.

Unlike millions of ordinary Americans, the President of the United States didn´t have to test his patience with an error-prone website or spend hours on the phone with a volunteer ´navigator´ in order to sign up for new health insurance. A White House official confirmed Monday that Barack Obama simply dispatched his aides to the Washington, D.C. insurance exchange´s office, where they filed his papers in person--while Obama himself luxuriated in his annual Hawaiian vacation with his family. ´His situation is unique,´ the official insisted. ´The president couldn´t have used the DC exchange´s website because the databases these

As the Obama administration scrambles to corral individuals into Obamacare before today’s deadline, experts worry that first-time health insurance buyers may be in for a rude awakening once they understand the conditions and terminology contained in their policies. A recent academic study published in the Journal of Health Economics found that just 14% of individuals who have health coverage could correctly answer all four of four basic questions about health insurance, including understanding what a “deductible” and “copay” are. If comprehension figures are that low for the insured, analysts worry what that portends for the

One in three of those put on statins because they are assessed to be at high risk of strokes and heart attacks may not need the drugs, research suggests. A study published in the European Heart Journal suggests millions of patients put on the medications may be being “over treated”--exposing them to potential side effects--while other patients who are more likely to suffer a heart attack are not being targeted. Most patients are put on statins because they have high cholesterol, high blood pressure or other conditions such as diabetes. But the study of almost 7,000 adults found that the

The British White Widow is believed to be masterminding new terror atrocities from a training camp linked to Al Qaeda after she was seen fleeing on a camel into a snake-infested forest in Somalia. Samantha Lewthwaite, 29, is suspected of helping to co-ordinate the attack on a Nairobi shopping mall in September which resulted in the deaths of 67 people. It is believed the terror suspect was transported in a 4x4 over the Kenyan border into Somalia where she has since been spotted four times. The latest sighting was two weeks ago, when spies saw the mother-of-four riding a camel between training camps

HONOLULU — When President Obama left Washington on Friday, he said he was eager to soak up the sun and relax during his 17-day vacation in Hawaii. But on Sunday, the president — accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and his daughters, Sasha and Malia — hit the town, venturing out twice from their private vacation retreat on the windward side of Oahu. First, the Obamas headed to the University of Hawaii, where the Oregon State Beavers were taking on the Akron Zips as part of Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic basketball tournament. I tried to use the ObamaCare exchange in my state, I really did. I probably spent about seven hours on the site in four or five sessions over the past few months. The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law. We think it´s a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. And unlike current law, it will provide much-needed relief to our already strained defense budget. One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees. The federal government has no greater obligation than to keep the American people safe and we must take

SOUTH BEND, Ind. –A federal judge said he doesn´t think the University of Notre Dame will succeed in its challenge to a federal health care law requirement that it provide students and employee health plans that cover birth control. U.S. District Judge Philip Simon on Friday rejected the Catholic school´s request for an injunction, prompting Notre Dame to file an appeal Monday to the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. School spokesman Paul Browne said Monday that Notre Dame was disappointed by Simon´s ruling, but was determined to press forward with the lawsuit it filed earlier this month.

Is someone really violating your right of “free speech” if they’re not using the power of the state to censor you? What if they’re “only” trying to get you fired, shamed out of public life, universally reviled, and left as a laughingstock — all without taking even a moment to address the conservative’s underlying argument? To some, that’s just a battle of free speech (conservative comment) versus free speech (lefty efforts to ruin your life), and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to be reminded of the law, thank you very much. The other side of the argument – the Mark Steyn,

National Security Agency defenders, including President Obama, continue to cite the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001 when defending the program that scoops up domestic call records in bulk. But asked specifically, on Friday, if he could identify a time when that program stopped a similar attack, President Obama couldn´t. That´s because the program hasn´t prevented a second 9/11. At the end of the year news conference, Reuters´s Mark Felsenthal asked: As you review how to rein in the National Security Agency, a federal judge says that, for example, the government has failed to cite a single instance in which

The White House said the president´s plan costs less than $400 per month. "The act of the president signing up for insurance coverage through the DC exchange is symbolic, since the president´s healthcare will continue to be provided by the military," the official said. He then parlayed the bank’s assets into the purchase of the state owned oil producer Yukos for $300 million. PAUSE for a moment, in the last leg of your holiday shopping, to glance at one of the manger scenes you pass along the way. Cast your eyes across the shepherds and animals, the infant and the kings. Then try to see the scene this way: not just as a pious set-piece, but as a complete world picture — intimate, miniature and comprehensive. Because that’s what the Christmas story really is — an entire worldview in a compact narrative, a depiction of how human beings relate to the universe and to one another. It’s about the vertical link between God

If Downton Abbey has a message (aside from the fact that you really can own too much silver), it is that life goes on. Matthew Crawley may end up dead in a ditch, but he leaves behind a baby boy for Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) to raise. Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, may perish after childbirth, but she has the good manners to make sure her baby girl survives. The tale of how these two tykes grow up and connive for control of Downton Abbey should make for an excellent Season 11, but for the moment all we need to concern

Going home for the holidays can be a fraught experience for many reasons, not the least of which is returning to your childhood bedroom only to find that your mother has installed a stair-master where your dresser used to be, or your dad has commandeered your bathroom with an array of mysterious file folders. And returning home with a significant other presents its own complications, as Saturday Night Live pointed out this weekend in amusing fashion. While we’ve accepted this as an unavoidable aspect of the holiday experience (“MOM, why is there this giant plant on my bookshelf now?!?”), we

A lot of people are saying that 2013 was President Obama´s worst year. Roll Call headlined, "Subdued Obama Hopes For Better 2014." The Hill reported, "Obama names health care rollout his biggest mistake of dismal year." Most people seem to think it was. But I think it was average, in the manner of the old Soviet joke: Ivan: So how was your day? Boris: Average. Ivan: What do you mean, average? Boris: Worse than yesterday, better than tomorrow. So, average. Unless something turns around, Obama´s 2013 is likely to be similarly "average": Worse than 2012, but better than 2014. It´s true that Obamacare has been

Christmas shoppers were stunned to learn last Thursday that computer hackers had made off with the names and other personal info of some 40 million Target customers. Some of the pilfered information is reportedly being sold on the black market, prompting JP Morgan Chase to limit purchases and cash withdrawals on debit cards owned by recent Target shoppers. But at least Target informed its customers of the security breach, as it is required by federal law to do. HealthCare.gov faces no such requirement; it need never notify customers that their personal information has been hacked or possibly compromised. The Department of
