Israel’s vocal criticism of the international community’s dealing with the Iranian nuclear issue is actually beneficial to the United States, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said recently, according to Israeli daily Ma’ariv. This surprising announcement was made during a private meeting in Washington over the weekend, the paper reported. Clinton’s statement contravenes the official U.S. policy to date, which has been to repeatedly and bluntly reject Israel’s vociferous objections to the substance of talks held in Geneva between Iran and world powers – convened in order to find a peaceful way to convince the Islamic Republic to curb its

“On the ninth of my planned 15 bomb runs, at 1,200 feet, an enemy antiaircraft shell exploded in the cockpit. Instinctively, I pulled back on the stick to gain altitude. Then I passed out. When I came to a short time later, I couldn’t see a thing. There was stinging agony in my face and throbbing in my head. I felt for my upper lip. It was almost severed from the rest of my face. I called out over the radio through my lip mike (which miraculously still worked), ‘I’m blind! For God’s sake, help me! I’m blind!’ ” The writer of those words, Kenneth A. Schechter, who died on Dec. 11 at 83, was no novelist. A graduate of Stanford and Harvard Business School,

With less than 24 hours to go until the critical Obamacare enrollment deadline, all eyes are on the Obama administration to see whether Democratic claims of a massive "Obamacare sign-up surge" will materialize. Tomorrow´s December 23rd deadline, which was extended an extra week due to the HealthCare.gov debacle, marks the near midpoint of Obamacare´s six-month enrollment period. The Obama administration says it needs to sign up 7,000,000 people to Obamacare by the March 31 deadline. Individuals wishing for health coverage to begin January 1 must be enrolled by tomorrow´s deadline; those wishing to avoid the government´s fine of $95 or

Marks & Spencer has told Muslim staff they can refuse to serve shoppers buying alcohol or pork, it has been revealed. The chain has granted checkout workers in more than 700 stores permission to politely decline to serve customers for religious reasons. Instead, shoppers are being asked to wait to pay for certain items at a different till. The policy highlights a divide among the mainstream food retailers over whether religious staff should be excused from certain tasks. In contrast to M&S, Sainsbury´s has told Muslim staff that there is no reason why they cannot handle goods such as alcohol and

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez Sr. on Friday defended the use of tear gas against protesters during a march and vigil that became unruly the night before. “Our officers showed remarkable restraint under very volatile conditions last night,” the chief said during a news conference. “They were professional and well-trained.” About 150 people showed up Thursday night to march from CCB Plaza to police headquarters and back, marking the one-month anniversary of the death of Jesus Huerta. Huerta, 17, died of an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound while handcuffed in the back of Officer Samuel Duncan’s patrol car in the headquarters parking lot

The number of children in the UK who have non-British parents has soared, with almost nine in ten babies born in 2012 born to at least one foreign parent. Just three in 10 London babies born in 2012 had both parents born in the UK, and in three London boroughs, as few as one fifth of babies had British-born parents. Across England and Wales, one in three babies had non-UK born parents, according to the Office for National Statistics. When Mexico’s drug-war violence surged in the middle of the last decade, Rocky Point was in a building boom, and the tourist industry assured us the beach town remained tranquilo. It was — for a while. Then, around 2007, the narcos made Rocky Point a home base, but still the local promoters insisted things were OK, because the criminals and cops took care of any conflicts outside town. After that, occasional gunfights and drug-war executions started cropping up in Puerto Peñasco,(snip)On Wednesday, Mexican military helicopter gunships fired into a resort, exchanging heavy-weapons fire with narcos who had retreated into a

I think we can safely call Cracker Barrel’s response to the Phil Robertson scandal a clusterduck. For those sensible souls not following the saga as closely as I am: the Southern restaurant chain became the first major retailer to pull some Duck Dynasty products off its shelves on Saturday in response to cast member Robertson’s now-notorious anti-gay GQ interview. Cue a barrage of tweets, emails, and calls from Duck Dynasty fans to the powers that be at Cracker Barrel, not to mention threats of a boycott. Now, a day later, the 625-outlet comfort food chain has capitulated and will resume

WASHINGTON- President Barack Obama must be expecting a Christmas miracle. Otherwise, Obamacare will cause more people to lose health care insurance this year than to gain it. That’s why Obama is dismantling Obamacare, jettisoning whole chunks as he tries to save his own creation even as he cripples it and creates public chaos. Not relying on divine intervention, Obama has his whole team scrambling to change rules, to re-interpret and to re-define how everything is done and measured. Insurance companies complain that he’s causing utter havoc with his constant changes (usually outside his legal authority) that will make the already-high

The big break in the case came Wednesday. That’s when a green Chevrolet Suburban, caught on surveillance video menacingly circling the parking areas of the Mall at Short Hills, was discovered abandoned in South Orange, according to two law enforcement sources. The large sports utility vehicle, they would later find out, belonged to the mother of one of the suspects in the fatal carjacking last Sunday of 30-year-old Dustin Friedland, who was shot and left for dead on the concrete floor of a mall parking deck as the Hoboken lawyer and his wife were returning to their car after an

President Barack Obama´s healthcare law could have a "meltdown" and make it difficult for his Democratic Party to keep control of the U.S. Senate next year if ongoing problems with the program are not resolved, a Democratic senator said on Sunday. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who has urged delaying a penalty for people who do not enroll for health insurance in 2014 under the law, told CNN that a transitional year was needed for the complex healthcare program, commonly known as Obamacare, to work. I’m not a fan of Duck Dynasty. There, I said it. I know that’s not something a conservative is supposed to say because we’re all stereotypes in the eyes of progressives, but I had to unburden myself of that. It’s nothing personal, it’s just, to steal a line from Bob Dylan, not my cup of meat. So when I first heard the story that Robertson patriarch Phil made “anti-gay remarks,” I didn’t really care. Most Americans didn’t care either. But, as my friend Erick Erickson says, “You will be made to care.” The Robertsons are Christians, like most Americans. But unlike

Since I am on a roll with Time magazine choosing Pope Francis as Person of the Year, after watching President Obama in his farewell press conference for the year, it occurred to me to suggest my first annual Washington Person of the Year. Reid and Boehner both learned from their mistakes and became champions and winners of Person of the

An organization of business owners, tradesmen, and citizens of Waterbury, Connecticut have volunteered their time and talents to present a Christmas gift to their community: a 16-ton, 52-foot tall illuminated cross. The cross, which was put into place on Friday, replaces a similar one that rose high above the Holy Land U.S.A. religious attraction, which closed in 1984, and served as a landmark to motorists on Interstate 84. According to the Hartford Courant, construction crews have worked feverishly to complete assembling the pieces of the cross and move them into position on Pine Hill for Sunday’s 6:00 p.m. lighting ceremony.
