President Obama wants House Speaker John Boehner to take the lead on immigration reform, even if that means a piecemeal approach, believing that a more comprehensive White House plan would die in the GOP-controlled Congress, according to sources informed of the strategy. “The president is giving Boehner wide latitude,” said a business leader who has attended several White House meetings where the president´s team has laid out their strategy. “They believe that the only chance of passage in the House is to let Boehner write the plan and for the White House to offer support from the sidelines.” The White House

The Republican Empire, led by Lord McConnell and Darth Boehner, isn’t taking primary challenges by tea party insurgents lying down, and an all-out intra-GOP war is breaking out. The Wall Street Journal reported recently that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been pressuring business interests to get off the sidelines and start backing Republican incumbents who are being challenged by conservative candidates in next year’s GOP primaries. Meanwhile, in the House, “Speaker John Boehner also has moved to undermine the power of the tea party.” McConnell is especially putting the strong arm

As we look back on 2013, it will likely be remembered as the year the rubber began hitting the road with regards to Obamacare. The failure of the website was epic, but it is minutia compared to the flaws in the law. This year we learned “whatever you had, you probably can’t keep it.” There is a resounding fear in the air that the worst is yet to come. As the year drew to a close, the establishment in the GOP decided it was time to declare open warfare on the conservative wing of the party. The establishment disdain for the grassroots is

HATFIELD, Mass. — Massachusetts state police say they´ve stopped a car carrying 1,250 packets of heroin stamped "Obamacare" and "Kurt Cobain" and arrested the four people inside it. Police say a trooper was making a traffic stop in Northampton when another car passed and he noticed several violations. He stopped the car a short time later in nearby Hatfield and found the driver wasn´t licensed to drive it. A state police dog found the bags of heroin. The four arrested people have been charged with heroin trafficking. State police Lt. Daniel Richard says it´s not unusual for heroin to be

President Barack Obama told reporters Friday that he met as frequently as biweekly with employees responsible for the Obamacare website, Healthcare.gov, in the time leading up to its October 1st launch. "There´s no doubt that when it came to the health care rollout, I was meeting every other week or every three weeks with folks and emphasizing how important it was that consumers had a good experience, an easy experience in getting the information they need and knowing what the choices and options were for them to be able to get high-quality, affordable health care," Obama said during his final press

Salt Lake City - A federal judge on Friday struck down Utah´s Amendment 3 — which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman — finding that it violates rights to due process and equal protection as set forth in the 14th Amendment. Within hours, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill confirmed that, in light of the ruling, he saw no reason to prohibit Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The Utah Attorney General's Office said it would seek an "emergency stay pending the filing of an appeal." "The federal district court’s ruling that same-sex marriage

"It is a 31-year-old female patient residing in a community called Brión Avanza in the municipality of Brión." Villasmil claimed that the case has no direct relation with the outbreak in the rest of the country. "We are aware of the malaria cases in the states of Sucre, Bolívar, Anzoátegui, southern Monagas, Zulia, and Táchira. However, this patient has not come out of the state. Occasionally the wrong person takes a column to heart. Earlier this month I wrote that Walmart doesn’t help its PR efforts when the company acts in a manner that only serves to reinforce its reputation as the Simon Legree of retail. (Details here .) In this instance an Ohio store had a display in the employee break room asking for donations to help other Walmart employees that had fallen on hard times during the Thanksgiving & Christmas season. Asking employees who earn an average of $12.83/hour to contribute to other employees is a touching testimony to the innate decency of the Walmart workforce,

The Tea Party has had one major legislative achievement: the sequester. By 2011, the movement was able to exert enough pressure on Republicans to ensure spending cuts would be a part of the budget deal.{SNIP}For as long as Republicans have been promising to cut spending, those cuts have never come. In 2011, thanks to the Tea Party and the sequester, Republicans’ small government rhetoric finally got real. The entire episode of the Budget Control Act, from 2011 to this week, should make clear to everyone that the only way Congress is ever going to cut spending is to put a

Salt Lake City — A federal judge has struck down Utah´s same-sex marriage ban, saying it is unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby issued a 53-page ruling Friday saying Utah´s law passed by voters in 2004 violates gay and lesbian couples´ rights to due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment. Shelby says the state failed to show that allowing same-sex marriages would affect opposite-sex marriages in any way, and the state´s unsupported fears and speculations are insufficient to justify deny allowing same-sex marriages. Attorneys for the state argued that Utah´s law promotes the state´s

On Wednesday, Politico’s Carrie Budoff Brown reported that the administration was saying fewer than 500,000 people had actually lost insurance due to Obamacare-induced cancellations. This struck me as a strange leak: Half a million is a lot less than many people (including me) have been estimating, but it is still not a small number, and the administration has tended to sit on negative information until the last possible moment. Yesterday, we had a more official announcement from the administration: Anyone who has had their policies cancelled will be exempt from the individual mandate next year. The administration is also allowing those

It was the shot heard ’round the conservative world. Last week, in defending the new, bipartisan budget agreement, House Speaker John Boehner took aim at the right-wing advocacy groups that vehemently opposed the deal. His language wasn’t just blunt. It was shockingly sharp for an exchange between supposed ideological allies. First, he called their opposition “ridiculous,” charging they were “using the American people for their own goals.” And then he upped the ante. “I think they are misleading their followers,” Boehner added a day later. “Frankly, I think they’ve lost all credibility.” This is as open a fissure among conservatives as we’ve seen in Tea

There never was any doubt that the Senate would follow the House in voting to hike spending and taxes.{SNIP}The most risible aspect of a risible bill is the claim that entitlement spending caps set to take effect a decade hence — after four congressional and two presidential elections — will save tens of billions of dollars. A recent AP/GfK poll shows that a majority of Americans, 55 percent, disapprove of how Barack Obama is handling the Iran issue. There’s good reason for skepticism about Iranian intentions—after all, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif threatens that if the interim deal agreed to on November 24 in Geneva falls apart then Iran can resume enriching uranium at 20 percent within 24 hours. The concerns of the American public have been heard and registered on Capitol Hill.

President Obama on Friday dismissed criticisms that the botched rollout of Obamacare and other mishaps produced a lost year for the White House, brushing aside increasingly negative views of his presidency while insisting his administration could tackle big issues in his second term. In a sign of just how brutal 2013 has been for Obama politically, the president in his last news conference of the year was forced to assess whether the past 12 months was his worst stretch since taking office. "That´s not how I think about it," Obama insisted, choosing to focus on a recent surge in Obamacare

At least they have their health. When it comes to purchasing insurance through the Obamacare exchanges, young adults don’t have much else going for them. Under Obamacare, young adults can buy a government-approved plan—with its mandated coverage of pediatric dental care, sterilization, and maternity care—and pay vastly inflated premiums relative to pre-Obamacare rates. Or they can simply go without insurance and pay the fine for violating Obamacare’s individual mandate—its unprecedented requirement that American citizens buy a product of the federal government’s choosing.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — There´s a political axiom that says if nobody is upset with what you’re doing, you’re not doing your job. We’ve seen this proved time and again in the liberal attacks on conservatives like Sarah Palin and Dr. Benjamin Carson, who provide principled examples to women and minorities and are savaged by the left for doing that job so well. But cheap-shot politics isn’t relegated to Democrats. Last week the House speaker, John A. Boehner of Ohio, attacked conservative groups who criticized the budget deal, hashed out by Representative Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, and Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington,

To their credit, some journalists called attention to this phenomenon at the time. Take CNN’s Jake Tapper, one of the best journalists in America. While at ABC News in 2008, Tapper posted a piece, “And Obama Wept,” in which he cited writers like Kathleen Geier, an Obama supporter who, in
