´Duck Dynasty´ Star Phil

Phil Robertson´s anti-gay comments aren´t the only part of his interview with GQ causing controversy. The 67-year-old "Duck Dynasty" star was suspended by A&E Wednesday for calling homosexuality sinful — and putting gay people in same category as terrorists. While those quotes quickly went viral, it wasn´t his only brow-raising statement in the interview; he also implied that African Americans were happier living under Jim Crow laws. "I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once," the reality star said of growing up in pre-Civil-Rights-era Louisiana. "Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked

A federal judge in Texas late last week accused the Obama administration of aiding drug cartels, saying that instead of enforcing immigration laws, agents knowingly helped smuggle an illegal immigrant girl into the U.S. to live with her mother, also an illegal immigrant, in Virginia. In a 10-page order, Judge Andrew S. Hanen said the case was the fourth such case he’s seen over the last month, and in each instance Customs and Border Protection agents have helped to locate and deliver the children to their illegal immigrant parents. A&E TV’s decision to suspend Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty is still lighting up social media. The network probably had some idea that any decision impacting its most popular show would generate a backlash, but probably underestimated just how large the reaction would be. Whether it had any idea of just how important a battle it was opening is something only the network execs really know. If they’re the typical broadcast execs, they probably have very little contact with the kind of people who watch Duck Dynasty, and have no idea why the show is as popular as it is. Wittingly

The Roots of the Ukraine

As hundreds of thousands continue to occupy Kiev’s Maidan square, and protests rage across Ukraine, plenty of explanations have been offered for the unrest, which was triggered by the Ukrainian president’s considering a closer relationship with Russia. It’s about a clash of economic interests, some say, or the divide between the western and eastern halves of the country, the latter Russian-speaking and much more industrial. While those issues are important, Walter Zaryckyj, executive director for the Center for U.S.-Ukrainian Relations (CUSUR), argues that the mass protests have deeper roots: in Stalin’s great genocide by famine of the Ukrainian people in

Attention, last-minute insurance shoppers: There are only four days before P-Day, Dec. 23. That´s the deadline for choosing a plan on an Obamacare insurance exchange to ensure that coverage begins on Jan. 1. If you´re scrambling to make last-minute arrangements, or waiting to hear if your insurer has actually received and approved your application, we know this is not your fault. For weeks, the government´s HealthCare.gov website repelled customers with the brutal efficiency of a nightclub bouncer. Even if you thought you completed the process, chances were good that your application information wasn´t accurately sent to insurers. If you´re among the millions

If "Duck Dynasty" network A&E feared advertisers would scatter like waterfowl after a shotgun blast because of Phil Robertson´s anti-gay comments ... it´s not happening. A company called Skyjacker -- which builds truck suspensions -- tells us it stands solidly behind Phil and the show ... saying it´s a matter of God and country -- it´s a free country and Phil has a right to his opinions. Company brass tells us it goes beyond the Constitution ... to the Creator: "We are a Christian- based company and actively share our faith so standing with Phil Robertson is an easy choice for us." The New Mexico Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in the state Thursday, declaring in a ruling that it is unconstitutional to deny a marriage license to gay and lesbian couples. New Mexico joins 16 states and the District of Columbia in allowing gay marriage. Eight of the state´s 33 counties started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in August, when a county clerk in southern New Mexico independently decided to allow the unions. County officials asked the high court to clarify the law and establish a uniform state policy on gay marriage. State statutes don´t explicitly prohibit or authorize gay

After a rough fall spent trying to recover from the botched rollout of healthcare.gov, President Obama is no doubt looking forward to his annual year-end holiday escape to Hawaii. The Senate on Thursday approved the first budget deal in years that didn´t threaten to keep lawmakers working into Christmas week, leaving Obama, his family and a coterie of close friends free to depart for a 17-day trip to Hawaii as scheduled Friday evening. The vacation will cost taxpayers an estimated $4 million and fill the sleepy town of Kailua and its miles of beautiful beaches with street barricades and security

Each of the inmates has reportedly been imprisoned for at least 15 years, with six of them being sentenced to life terms. This marks the first time Obama has used his powers of constitutional clemency of crack cocaine offenders who’d have seen reduced sentences anyhow under the 2011 law that significantly lowered the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine offenses. “If they had been sentenced under the current law, many of them would

The problem with solutions is that few of them tend to be perfect, even if they act in a mostly benign manner. Actions produce reactions, a principle as true in politics as it is in physics, and those tend to multiply when solutions increase in complexity. The nature of these unintended consequences changes dramatically when complex “solutions” turn out to be poorly designed and incompetently administered. The rollout of the Affordable Care Act has provided many real-world examples of this, but perhaps none so “unintended” as the consequences discovered by the Seattle Times this weekend. Ken “The Hutch” Hutcherson, 61, a former Seattle Seahawk and an outspoken pastor who championed racial equality but opposed gay marriage, died shortly before noon on Wednesday. He had battled prostate cancer for more than a decade. Pastor Hutcherson, who started the Antioch Bible Church in Redmond, was not afraid to take on politically unpopular causes, such as his yearslong battle against same-sex marriage, or institutional inequities, such as the practice by adoption agencies of charging higher fees to adopt white babies. During his life, the husband and father of four was described by supporters as funny, happy and jovial even in the face of cancer, while detractors called him an egotistic bully.

The bird-flipping Goldstein helped break down legal barriers against pornography and raged against politicians, organized religion and anything that even suggested good taste. His angry humor, garish attire, numerous divorces and X-rated mind made him an infamous national figure. He took potshots at sacred cows in the magazine´s pages and placed an 11-foot-tall sculpture of an extended middle finger outside his former Florida home.

A nation founded by pilgrims who came here to worship the God of the Bible freely without interference and persecution from ruling elites and those opposed to Christianity´s influence on the culture, has now come to the proverbial fork in the road. After years of attempting to balance traditional Americana with political correctness, those pushing the new "my way or the highway" definition of "tolerance" have decided accommodating our differences of opinion is defeat. Irrefutable history documents that the Bible and its teachings were the biggest influence on those that founded the freest and most prosperous nation in human history. Yet

Not so long ago, casually throwing the Knights Templar into polite conversation was a litmus test of mental health. One of Umberto Eco’s characters in Foucault’s Pendulum summed it up perfectly. He declared that you could recognise a lunatic "by the liberties he takes with common sense, by his flashes of inspiration, and by the fact that sooner or later he brings up the Templars". But all good things come to an end. The enigmatic medieval monk-knights are no longer a fringe interest for obsessives. They are now squarely mainstream. And as 18 March 2014 draws closer, Templarmania is going
