Medical Experts Tell Congress about

WASHINGTON – A group of physicians and health policy experts warned Congress some Americans might begin to see smaller provider networks and higher premiums under the nation’s new healthcare law. Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) held another hearing last week on the impact of the Affordable Care Act. In the last few months, the committee has embarked upon an examination of the details of how the ACA was implemented, along with the troubled rollout of the online health insurance marketplace. This time the committee convened a panel of physicians and healthcare experts to scrutinize the

“To contend that the obligation imposed on the president to see the laws faithfully executed implies a power to forbid their execution is a novel construction of the Constitution, and is entirely inadmissible.” — U.S. Supreme Court, 1838 Congressional Republicans’ long-simmering dismay about Barack Obama’s offenses against the separation of powers became acute when events compelled him to agree with them that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) could not be implemented as written. But even before he decreed alterations of key ACA provisions — delaying enforcement of certain requirements for health insurance and enforcement of employers’ coverage obligations — he had

It’s early for a palate cleanser but I’m not sure this doesn’t qualify as legit news. I … did not expect to find myself eager to revisit the Romney 2012 campaign on film, but here we are, my friends. Here we are. It’s true that the trailer is more humanizing than anything Romney’s campaign did for him, but the deck is stacked. The bio video that the GOP produced for the convention was solid but nothing as stage-managed as campaign propaganda will ever have the disarming charm of behind-the-scenes footage of the candidates in unguarded moments. Plus, the trailer’s cheating by

It was 8:15ish am. I was driving home in my pride and joy, a turquoise Morris Minor convertible, from a refinery south of Odessa, Texas, my hometown, after 12 solid hours of the hardest, filthiest, stinkinest, horriblist work on planet Earth-or any other planet for that matter. I pulled into the little, owner-operated "fillin´ station," to get some 39 cents a gallon gasoline. I was filthy. I stunk... stank... whatever. I smelled like the acrid, rock hard, gunk, that I had been sledgehammering off the walls of the stinking, hot, gaseous steel tank, just a few minutes before, deep in the bowels of the

The Ivy-League educated half-brother of President Obama is publishing his autobiography in which he makes the shocking claim their father dished out alcohol-fueled beatings to him and his mother and in one terrifying instance held a knife to her throat. Mark Obama Ndesandjo, 48, also uses his new book to set the U.S. president straight on inaccuracies he claims exist in his best-selling 1995 memoir Dreams From My Father and confirms they have never seen eye-to-eye because ´Barack thought I was too white and I thought he was too black.´ The self-published book, Cultures: My Odyssey of Self-Discovery, which will be

Passive smoking doesn´t give you lung cancer. So says a new report publicised by the American Cancer Institute which will come as no surprise whatsoever to anyone with a shred of integrity who has looked into the origins of the great "environmental tobacco smoke" meme. It was, after all, a decade ago that the British Medical Journal, published the results of a massive, long-term survey into the effects of second-hand tobacco smoke. Between 1959 and 1989 two American researchers named James Enstrom and Geoffrey Kabat surveyed no few than 118,094 Californians. Fierce anti-smoking campaigners themselves, they began the research because they

Try as it might, the White House just cannot put the Edward Snowden story to rest: the leaks keep on dribbling out and this week the US District Court in Washington ruled that the bulk collection of phone records is "Orwellian" and likely to be unconstitutional. That (slightly histrionic) opinion will certainly be subject to appeal and review--ultimately by the Supreme Court--but whatever the eventual result, it means that the White House no longer has any hope of parking this story, as it might have hoped when it first broke. This is to be welcomed, but with an important caveat.

"Welcome to the post-nuclear Senate," said a GOP aide after the confirmation of Jeh Johnson as Secretary of Homeland Security. Johnson´s nomination was one of the first to be considered after Majority Leader Harry Reid used the so-called "nuclear option" to override the Senate´s rules and end the use of filibusters on executive and judicial nominations. Now, nominees can be confirmed by a simple majority vote. Winning passage wasn´t a major issue for Johnson; he was confirmed 78 to 16. But because of Reid´s move, Johnson could go into the process knowing he didn´t need a single Republican vote to be

Obama, speaking to the moms in the Oval Office, acknowledged that there have been problems with the roll-out of his signature health legislation, but insisted that a solid P.R. campaign will rescue Obamacare. When people “hear about preventive care, the more they hear about no lifetime limits,” Obama said. “The more information they get, the more satisfied they’re going to be.” And moms can play a

President Barack Obama has struggled to sell his health care law this fall — and until now, he’s largely been without his top seller: first lady Michelle Obama. The first lady has done little to promote the Affordable Care Act in recent months, marking a shift from her usual role as the president’s middle class messenger — a move that allowed her to sidestep the political battles over the law, and questions about the administration’s trustworthiness. Now, with HealthCare.gov’s glitches mostly fixed, and pressure mounting for the administration to boost enrollment numbers — and the president’s approval ratings continuing to slump —

In Lawrence v. Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court, reversing its own then-recent holding in Bowers v. v. Hardwick, ruled that laws against homosexual sodomy are unconstitutional–even though the Constitution says nothing about sex, let alone sodomy–on the ground that the right of privacy (also never mentioned in the Constitution) protects all consensual, private sexual contact between adults. Lawrence immediately was seen as a milestone in the campaign for gay marriage. Some conservatives noted that the Court’s rationale would protect polygamy, too, but they were denounced as killjoys. Lawyers noticed, however. Soon after Lawrence, several lawsuits were commenced in federal courts

Hours after we reported that Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson dropped some illogical “logic” on homosexuality during his GQ interview, his home network A&E decided to indefinitely suspend him from the show. While Robertson’s comments were hilariously ignorant, they were predictable — especially given his family’s socially-conservative, Bible-loving image. Suspending the lead character for his wholly predictable comments is not only an overreaction but a gross misstep. To recap: The Duck Commander patriarch remarked to the men’s magazine that homosexuality is on par with bestiality, and used fifth-grade “logic” to imply that homosexual men should give up their ways of choosing a
