PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- At the Olde Good Things antique store on Manhattan´s Upper West Side, a French crystal chandelier can go for tens of thousands of dollars. A marble mantel sells for more than $20,000 and hand-carved dinner tables are priced even higher. The store´s Christian missionary owners offer their well-heeled customers a heart-warming story: Part of the proceeds pay for the group´s orphanage in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. What they don´t say is that even though they claim in IRS filings to be spending around $2.5 million annually, the home for boys and girls was

Just a week before young adults return home for the end of year holidays, Organizing for America is debuting a video imploring parents to interrupt their time with their children to promote the benefits of Obamacare in a last-ditch attempt to ease millennial dissatisfaction with President Obama. The video, debuting on BarackObama.com and promoted through various social media, arrives on the eve of a joint President and First Lady event designed to target mothers of uninsured millennials as they arrive home for their holidays. In the clip, a mother and father call their son, presumably about to drive home for

Michelle Obama will sit for a trio of interviews with urban radio stations as part of a coordinated White House blitz intended to promote ObamaCare coverage among mothers and minorities. The first lady will be interviewed Wednesday evening by Yolanda Adams, Al Sharpton, and Joe Madison, three of the nation’s most popular African American talk radio hosts. “Her interviews are part of a broader effort by the White House and partnerships with outside groups, faith leaders, and health professionals to encourage African Americans to get covered,” a White House official said. The first lady’s radio appearances are intended to compliment an

Trenton — The state Legislature´s ethics panel today charged a South Jersey lawmaker $500 for violating the public´s trust by filing a complaint against a State Police trooper who pulled him over for speeding last year. The fine against Assemblyman Nelson Albano (D-Cumberland), approved 8-0 during a hearing by the Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards, was the first to be handed down against a New Jersey legislator in 35 years. The panel took up the matter in September after a complaint by Edward Beck of Dennis Township, who based his allegations on a Star-Ledger story published in April

When President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Denis McDonough, approached John Podesta a few weeks ago about taking over the high-aggravation job of White House counselor, the biggest concern wasn’t that he would say no. After all, he had already done so twice before. Obama’s team was more worried that Podesta would say no and that word of his rejection would leak, making the White House look feckless and desperate at the end of Obama’s brutal fifth year in office. So, the circle of people in the know was kept to a small handful; it was so closely held that

Washington - Bidding for a painting by George Zimmerman, whose 2012 killing of black youth Trayvon Martin sparked national outrage, neared $100,000 on Tuesday in an online auction that ends Sunday. The signed patriotic blue-hued portrayal of the Stars and Stripes flag is overlayed with the words "God, One Country, with Liberty and Justice for All" in typewriter font. "First hand painted artwork by me, George Zimmerman," he wrote on eBay, where the highest bid stood at $99,966 -- way above Monday´s starting price of 99 cents plus $40 for "expedited shipping." Jon Stewart finds the notion of a possible "knockout game" trend absolutely hilarious. Stewart brought up the brutal attacks on The Daily Show Monday night, chortling along as he described a series of physical assaults on innocent victims. The liberal comic couldn´t scrounge up much sympathy for the victims, nor did he think it might be helpful to boost the penalties against such assaults. The show dubbed the rash of attacks Meet the Knockers to parody the Meet the Fockers film with a comical image of a fist surrounded by a comic book-style halo. Instead, he used his favorite tool--the cherry picker--to insinuate

In the days immediately following the release of the budget deal negotiated between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), House Speaker John Boehner launched a preemptive attack on conservative and tea party grass roots activists. Saying these groups had "lost all credibility" by attacking a budget deal that hiked federal spending, Boehner was trying to marginalize conservatives and blunt their influence in the debate. He needn´t have bothered. Conservatives were largely absent from the fight over the Ryan-Murray budget. That says more about Republicans, however, than it does about conservatives.

King told Politico, “It’s a vehicle that will enable me to go around the country to try to find like-minded Republicans who do not support a government shutdown, who do not support Ted Cruz’s whole idea of a government shutdown, of Rand Paul being isolationist." FORT MEADE, Md. — A military judge on Tuesday twice expelled Ramzi bin al-Shibh — one of five Guantánamo Bay detainees facing a death penalty trial — from a courtroom at the military base there in Cuba after he disrupted proceedings by shouting about his treatment.(snip) As guards took him away the second time to watch the hearing on a monitor in a nearby holding cell, Mr. bin al-Shibh’s voice faded from the closed-circuit feed that reporters — some at a media facility on the base, some here at Fort Meade — are allowed to watch. He appeared to be shouting something like “I am not a war criminal; you are a war criminal.”

WASHINGTON — A host of key amendments to the defense reauthorization bill will not be allowed when the spending measure comes up for a cloture vote on Wednesday, and Senate Republicans charge it’s because Democratic leaders want to avoid a potentially embarrassing vote for the Obama administration. “We will tomorrow turn to a defense authorization bill that’s been handled in such a way that there have essentially been no amendments. This is obviously to protect the administration from having a vote on enhanced sanctions on Iran,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters after a closed policy luncheon

There´s something a little bit annoying about these calls to talk about Obamacare over Christmas, though on the other hand... -- Getting healthcare coverage is an important topic for a lot of people -- Political and economic issues are more fun to talk about at holidaytime than most other topics that people chit-chat about. But this is not what conservatives are reacting to. They´re flipping out that the face of un-covered America is not manly looking enough. Here are a couple of representative tweets, but really there are a lot more.

A Marine facing military discharge for mistakenly sending a threat warning from an unclassified email account garnered high-level support ahead of a military hearing that began Tuesday, with several members of Congress leaping to his defense. Maj. Jason Brezler, a Marine Corps reservist and New York City fire fighter was facing a board of inquiry -- the equivalent of an administrative hearing in the military -- for warning his fellow Marines of an insider threat in August 2012. He had tried to warn about an Afghan police chief -- known to be linked to the Taliban, and also a child predator. Brezler´s

GREENVILLE, S.C. — It had been four days since House Speaker John A. Boehner slammed conservative groups for opposing a bipartisan budget deal, saying they’d “lost all credibility,” and “I don’t care what they do,” and other things read as a declaration of independence from the tea party movement that has held sway over the Republican Party. Now it was Monday evening far from Washington, in a restaurant called Tommy’s Country Ham House, and the very people who felt insulted by Boehner’s remarks were beginning to gather — a crowd of 150 or so coming to say they were not done yet. Although poll numbers showed the tea party

A hearing was held today for a Marine Corps reservist who could be dishonorably discharged for trying to warn his fellow Marines about an Afghan police chief’s links to the Taliban. Maj. Jason Brezler had tried to warn about Afghan Police Chief Sarwar Jan, a known child predator with ties to the Taliban. Jan was routinely allowed on military bases, but Brezler believed he should not be. Brezler said he was trying to do the right thing by sending the warning, but it was issued through a personal email account, which is an unclassified channel. The warning was ultimately ignored, and days later, three Marines lost their lives when

This year´s installment of Senator Tom Coburn´s annual Wastebook may make politicians on both sides of the aisle squirm with discomfort: it documents extravagant federal government waste in a year when many complained that sequestration left nothing to cut. "We´ve had the Defense Department and people in the other non-Defense discretionary departments screaming the cupboard is bare. There´s nothing else to cut. The fact is that just isn´t true," the Oklahoma Republican told reporters as he unveiled the 2013 Wastebook on Tuesday. The Department of Defense comes under special scrutiny in Coburn’s report.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced his delegates to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. And, in what may be a thumb in the eye to Russian President Vladimir Putin over his crackdown on gay rights, two of Obama´s delegates are openly gay. Billie Jean King, the tennis legend, and Caitlin Cahow, an Olympic medalist in women’s ice hockey, are both part of the U.S. delegation. Both are out lesbians. Another member of the U.S. delegation, figure skating Olympic medalist Brian Boitano, routinely declines to answer questions about his sexuality, saying "everybody´s got their own path"

When you toss in the shaved ice, greens fees, and gas for Air Force One, the American taxpayers could be on the hook for one mighty expensive Hawaiian holiday. The Hawaii Reporter ran the numbers on last year’s trip and found that it cost taxpayers more than $4 million. That’s some pricy poi. And while the first
