Six GOP Senators Back Ryan-Murray

The budget deal that House Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) cut with Senate Budget Committee chairwoman Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) is set to clear the Senate, The New York Times reports. “Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, announced his support for the measure on Monday, appearing to give it the 60 votes it would need to overcome a filibuster threat and bring it to a final vote, which would need only a majority,” the Times’ Jonathan Weisman wrote Monday. “Mr. Hatch joined Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona, Richard M. 2014 will be the year Republicans are forced to deal with the Obamacare Trap, helpfully set for them by the Democratic authors of the Affordable Care Act. In 2009 and 2010, President Obama and his party took a health care system in which 85 percent had insurance coverage, and blew it up. Now, with Obamacare causing misery right and left, those same Democrats are screaming, "You can´t go back!" The national health care scheme they designed is so complex and has already embedded itself so deeply in the health care system, they argue, that it can never be repealed. The only course

In the same week that Pope Francis was named Time´s Person of the Year, word arrived of the charitable contributions made by the Jane Fonda Foundation. Grand total for the years 2007 to 2011: zero dollars. The last time Ms. Fonda´s Foundation made a charitable gift, reports the Smoking Gun website, was in 2006, to the tune of $1,000. The Foundation itself has $800,000 in assets. Ms. Fonda´s representatives insist she´s made larger gifts, particularly through her family foundation, which in 2011 made about $350,000 in contributions from $7.2 million in net assets. But even that´s not quite 5%, the legal

With all the resources available to Google, you would imagine that the executives and boffins who labour there enjoy an idyllic life. But it turns out that they too suffer from back pain. Neuromuscular pain in the back and neck is the single largest reason for medical treatment at the Californian group. Back pain has become the scourge of the modern office worker. A 2004 study found that Americans spent $90bn a year on it. And the conventional medical cure frequently offers little relief: a review found that up to 50 per cent of patients who had disc surgery felt

The FBI says it has helped to disrupt or prevent nearly 150 shootings and violent attacks this year, in part by steering potential gunmen toward mental health professionals. It´s an achievement that stands out during a year when President Barack Obama made curbing gun violence a priority, yet has had little success in getting new restrictions enacted. There have been hundreds of these disruptions since 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder recently told an audience of police chiefs, touting the behind-the-scenes work of a small FBI unit based out of Quantico, Va. In most cases, the FBI has helped potential offenders get

In a carefully reasoned opinion issued today, federal district judge Brian M. Cogan of the Eastern District of New York ruled that various Catholic nonprofit institutions that were the supposed beneficiaries of the Obama administration’s phony accommodation on the HHS contraception mandate are entitled to permanent injunctive relief against enforcement of the HHS mandate. (The case is styled Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York v. Sebelius.) This is the second merits ruling holding that the accommodation doesn’t satisfy the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act. No court, so far as I’m aware, has ruled the other way. As I noted a

Tech giants aren´t on the best terms with the Obama administration lately, with the NSA´s surveillance revelations getting more widespread by the day. Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union appeared in U.S. District Court Friday to argue for a preliminary injunction that would halt the National Security Agency´s collection of all Americans´ phone records. Judge William Pauley did not set a time frame for when he might announce his decision – but as he reviews the case, NSA opponents may have cause for optimism. ACLU legal fellow Brett Max Kaufman, one of the attorneys in court for the hearing, said Pauley seemed skeptical of the government´s reliance on the Supreme Court´s 1979 Smith v. Maryland decision. Now new alliances in both Asia and the Middle East confirm our steepening decline. Beyond ICBMs and advanced aircraft carriers, will and power are what make a nation a force to be reckoned with. When Argentina invaded the Falklands in 1982, every one of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher´s civilian advisers told her that "recapture was all but impossible," Charles Moore recounted in his new biography of the Iron Lady. 1. It’s 2013, and the Obama Administration has more than three years left to run. We haven’t even had the midterms yet. Mark Halperin and John Heilemann just put out their tell-all about the 2012 campaign. Give us a break. 2. It’s only twelve months since Hillary stepped down as Secretary of State. At that point, she’d been in the public eye, pretty much constantly, for more than twenty years. Doubtless, she’s enjoying the hiatus. So are we. 3. The folks running the Ready for Hillary campaign sound a bit annoying. They have their own Web site, T-shirts, fund-raising organization, and cardboard

Heavy marijuana users may have abnormal brain structures which can lead to poor memory, Nature World News reported. In a new study, researchers from Northwestern Medicine used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the brains of 67 former marijuana users. The participants had begun their drug use when they were 16 to 17 years old, but they had all been marijuana free for an average of two years at the time of the study. (Snip) The researchers also found that the brain structures of the marijuana users closely resembled the brains of schizophrenia patients.

The White House on Monday dismissed documents provided by the House Oversight Committee that suggested so-called "navigators" assisting consumers with signing up for the new healthcare law had put consumer information at risk. "This is just one more data point in the Republican obsession with sabotaging ObamaCare," said White House press secretary Jay Carney. The panel charges that some ObamaCare navigators “encouraged consumers to commit tax fraud by underreporting income in order to qualify for ObamaCare’s health insurance subsidies.” It also says that navigators broke rules by mailing paper applications on behalf of consumers, rather than telling consumers to do

PHILADELPHIA —A Philadelphia doctor already serving life in prison for performing rogue abortions has been sentenced to a concurrent 30 years for distributing painkillers. Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, is serving life without parole for killing three babies born alive during illegal abortions. That investigation grew out of complaints he ran a lucrative “pill mill” at his West Philadelphia clinic. Gosnell pleaded guilty in July after the murder trial to charges that he illegally distributed OxyContin and other painkillers. Prosecutors say he allowed addicts and dealers to fill prescriptions that were often sold or traded on the street.

If men are obsolete, then women will soon be extinct—unless we rush down that ominous Brave New World path where females will clone themselves by parthenogenesis, as famously do Komodo dragons, hammerhead sharks, and pit vipers. A peevish, grudging rancor against men has been one of the most unpalatable and unjust features of second- and third-wave feminism. Men’s faults, failings and foibles have been seized on and magnified into gruesome bills of indictment. Ideologue professors at our leading universities indoctrinate impressionable undergraduates with carelessly fact-free theories alleging that gender is an arbitrary, oppressive fiction with no basis in biology. Marriage in America is in a state of free-fall, and it’s the confluence of American attitudes and legal rulings that are responsible for helping push it off the cliff. On Friday night, a George W. Bush judicial appointee, Judge Clark Waddoups, struck down a part of Utah’s law against polygamy in a 91-page ruling. The case drew nationwide attention because the plaintiff, Kody Brown, is the star of TLC’s Sister Wives, a reality show depicting the life of a polygamist family. Waddoups’ ruling is fairly limited, insisting that the state’s ban on “religious cohabitation” is unconstitutional, and therefore should no longer be
