Now I really have seen everything. On Monday, Bloomberg View columnist Caroline Baum actually said that to get young people to sign up for ObamaCare, in states where it´s legal, the Administration should give them marijuana:Instead of outreach programs and sappy TV ads with parents imploring their kids to sign up for Obamacare, President Barack Obama needs to start thinking creatively if he wants his signature legislative achievement to be a success. What motivates kids? In fact, what motivates any of us? Incentives. This White House has failed to grasp what makes individuals and businesses tick. Whether it´s taxes or

PHILADELPHIA —A Philadelphia doctor already serving life in prison for performing rogue abortions has been sentenced to a concurrent 30 years for distributing painkillers. Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, is serving life without parole for killing three babies born alive during illegal abortions. That investigation grew out of complaints he ran a lucrative “pill mill” at his West Philadelphia clinic. Gosnell pleaded guilty in July after the murder trial to charges that he illegally distributed OxyContin and other painkillers. Prosecutors say he allowed addicts and dealers to fill prescriptions that were often sold or traded on the street.

Kathleen Sebelius went to bat for Obamacare navigators in an op-ed prior to a hearing led by Darrell Issa investigating the people designated to promote the health-care law as “navigators.” She accused the House Oversight Committee chairman of holding a field hearing in Dallas “designed to stifle, intimidate and impugn the reputation of people who have been working hard to help their fellow Texans get covered.” In the Dallas Morning News, Sebelius urged Republicans on the committee to stop “demonizing, demoralizing or deterring” navigators, praising the navigators for their efforts. She wrote navigators are “not paid to sell insurance,” but to

They´re unable to do that, and they will never succeed, by the way, in eliminating Christmas from our minds, from our hearts, from our faith. They will never succeed. All they can do is raise a ruckus about nativity scenes or other public displays, outlawing Christmas carols or not being allowed to say "Merry Christmas" but having to say "happy holidays." Marriage in America is in a state of free-fall, and it’s the confluence of American attitudes and legal rulings that are responsible for helping push it off the cliff. On Friday night, a George W. Bush judicial appointee, Judge Clark Waddoups, struck down a part of Utah’s law against polygamy in a 91-page ruling. The case drew nationwide attention because the plaintiff, Kody Brown, is the star of TLC’s Sister Wives, a reality show depicting the life of a polygamist family. Waddoups’ ruling is fairly limited, insisting that the state’s ban on “religious cohabitation” is unconstitutional, and therefore should no longer be

After reports of foul play by navigators in the area – one trainee at the Urban League of Greater Dallas allegedly encouraged an applicant to lie about his income on the application – the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee scheduled a hearing in Richardson, Texas to investigate the program. “While President Barack

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi privately has urged the Obama administration to halt deportations for some illegal immigrants, saying that President Obama needs to use more “discretion” to reduce the number of people he’s kicking out of the country. In an interview with Telemundo over the weekend, Mrs. Pelosi said that just being in the country illegally is not enough of a reason to be deported, and she said illegal immigrants must have something more serious on their records. “Our view of the law is that it — if somebody is here without sufficient documentation, that is not reason for deportation,” she

City Journal´s Kay Hymowitz has an informative and important new essay out surveying the social-science research into the effects of fatherless household on boys and young men. (Spoiler: They´re baneful.) But Hymowitz, generally an astute observer, opens by framing her argument in terms of an immense fallacy of presumption, the unraveling of which should be helpful in any consideration of what those empirical findings mean. Here are Hymowitz´s opening 2½ paragraphs: When I started following the research on child well-being about two decades ago, the focus was almost always girls´ problems--their low self-esteem, lax ambitions, eating disorders, and, most alarming, high rates

The supposed truck bomb contained no explosives, but the 58-year-old Kansas man arrested in an FBI sting at the Wichita airport on Friday was potentially the most dangerous kind of homegrown terrorist. Others such as the alleged Boston Marathon bombers and the would-be Times Square bomber tailored their attacks to allow them to avoid capture. For most people’s tastes he’s grazing way too close to the vicinity of her abdomen. And watch her reaction. Is it shock, awe, utter disbelief? Whatever the expression, she appeared to

Another shooting, another son of divorce. From Adam Lanza, who killed 26 children and adults a year ago at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn., to Karl Pierson, who shot a teenage girl and killed himself this past Friday at Arapahoe High in Centennial, Colo., one common and largely unremarked thread tying together most of the school shooters that have struck the nation in the last year is that they came from homes marked by divorce or an absent father. From shootings at MIT (i.e., the Tsarnaev brothers) to the University of Central Florida to the Ronald E. McNair Discovery

Back in 2009, to accuse President Barack Obama of lying about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was to crawl onto a pretty lonely branch. As recently as November 2012-more than two years after the administration published grandfathering regulations as part of its health care legislation, rendering ludicrous the president´s frequently repeated pledge

A federal judge ruled Monday that the National Security Agency program which collects information on nearly all telephone calls made to, from or within the United States is likely to be unconstitutional. U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon found that the program appears to run afoul of the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures. He also said the Justice Department had failed to demonstrate that collecting the so-called metadata had helped to head off terrorist attacks. Acting on a lawsuit brought by conservative legal activist Larry Klayman, Leon issued a preliminary injunction barring the NSA from collecting metadata

The universe is a hologram and everything you can see - including this article and the device you are reading it on - is a mere projection. This is according to a controversial model proposed in 1997 by theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena. Until now the bizarre theory had never been tested, but recent mathematical models suggest that the mind-boggling principle could be true. According to the theory, gravity in the universe comes from thin, vibrating strings. These strings are holograms of events that take place in a simpler, flatter cosmos. Professor Maldacena´s model suggests that the universe exists in nine
