CENTENNIAL, Colo.– Carrying a shotgun, a machete, a bandolier of ammunition and a backpack with three incendiary devices, Karl Halverson Pierson entered Arapahoe High School and launched 80 seconds of terror as he hunted his debate coach, who was also the school librarian. New details emerged Saturday as authorities described the country´s latest school shooting. As soon as he entered the building Friday, Pierson fired a round down the hallway and another from point-blank range that critically injured one student. He fired a third round down the hall and entered the library, where he fired again and set off one

The two-year budget deal crafted by Republican congressman Paul Ryan and Democratic senator Patty Murray sailed through the House of Representatives on a 332-94 vote last Thursday, just two days after it was introduced. If cutting a bipartisan deal is so easy, why couldn´t Republicans and Democrats have reached an agreement before October 1 and skipped the government shutdown altogether? "I think the pressure of divided government has come full force, and I think the specter of one or two more government shutdowns concentrated our minds to make this divided government work," Paul Ryan said on Saturday afternoon, speaking with THE

Michael R. Bloomberg, determined to parlay his government experience and vast fortune into a kind of global mayoralty, is creating a high-powered consulting group to help him reshape cities around the world long after he leaves office. To build the new organization, paid for out of his own pocket, the billionaire mayor is taking much of his City Hall team with him: He has already hired many of his best-known and longest-serving deputies, promising them a chance to export the policies they developed in New York to far-flung places like Louisville, Ky., and Mexico City. For Mr. Bloomberg, the project is

Yesterday, the Obama administration claimed that it had reduced the data errors being sent to health insurance companies. Originally, approximately 15,000 enrollment forms were not transmitted correctly to the companies but now the Administration claims the erroneous transmissions have been greatly diminished. The insurance companies disagree. For each enrollee, the government is supposed to send the insurance company a form known as an 834. "In some cases, consumers selected a health plan at the federal website, HealthCare.gov, but the government did not notify the insurance company. In other cases, insurers received duplicate files for the same person, files for one

Colorado Gov. Karl Pierson, the suspected gunman, badly wounded a fellow student then shot himself to death at Arapahoe High School in suburban Denver Friday. Police say he may have been retaliating for bullying and for being kicked off the debate team months ago. But Hickenlooper told CBS´ "Face

The number of children taking powerful antipsychotic drugs has nearly tripled over the last 10 to 15 years, according to recent research. The increase comes not because of an epidemic of schizophrenia or other forms of serious mental illness in children, but because doctors are increasingly prescribing the drugs to treat behavior problems, a use not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And a disproportionate number of those prescriptions are written for poor and minority children, some as young as age 2. Doctors are prescribing antipsychotics even though there’s minimal evidence that the drugs help kids for approved

An NYPD officer is being credited with offering some Christmas kindness to a freezing homeless man by literally giving him the shirt off his back. The New York Post reports Officer Carlos Ramos, 29, was tasked with searching for suspicious packages or activity on Manhattan’s East Side Friday morning when he encountered a shivering Robert William. At the time, William was reportedly sitting barefoot on the sidewalk and trying to rip his shirt in half to wrap -- and warm -- his feet. And if the iconic daughter of American political royalty showed herself to be deeply uncomfortable as a glad-handing pol, she’s on her way to becoming something of a rock star in the more dignified world of diplomacy.

Syria is the new rallying point for the worldwide jihad. There has not been a secular fighting force in Syria for close to a year. Instead, it has become the destination for jihadists across the world to engage in holy war.(snip)The idea that Obama is somehow naive or clueless is indeed clueless. The terrible fact is that in every situation, in every conflict, Obama supports the jihadists. In Libya, Obama involved the United States in the efforts to overthrow Qaddafi without congressional approval, and without anything close to national self-interest. And while Qaddafi was a somewhat madcap barbarian, he was

The Republican establishment is fed up with the “outside groups” — the conservative lobbying shops and super PACs that have pulled the party Rightward in recent years — and this time, it’s the establishment that is uninterested in compromise. House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are playing to win. But here´s the problem: Directly fighting the insurgent groups only makes them stronger. In a span of 48 hours, the party leadership took two direct shots at the conservative insurgents. Boehner attacked the outside groups on camera, singling out Heritage Action. Also, Rep. Of all of the last-minute delays, website bungles, and Presidential whims that have marred the roll-out of Obamacare’s subsidized insurance exchanges, what happened on Thursday, December 12 will stand as one of the most lawless acts yet committed by this administration. The White House—having canceled Americans’ old health plans, and having botched the system for enrolling people in new ones—knows that millions of Americans will enter the new year without health coverage. So instead of actually fixing the problem, the administration is retroactively attempting to force insurers to hand out free health care—at a loss—to those whom the White House

There goes the neighborhood! Motor homes have invaded the Upper West Side, sparking fear in the hearts of residents worried their well-heeled haven could fast be transformed into a low-rent campsite. “Why is this ugly piece of junk here?” demanded area activist Gretchen Berger, referring to the rusted RV that has been stationed at Riverside Drive and 74th Street. “It just sort of creeps me out that somebody is living in a parking space, and this may give rise to other people thinking that it’s a cheap way to live on the Upper West Side, where the rents are high.

For quite some time, science has been presented to the public in a distorted way. Reports of statements by scientists are often stated as absolutely certain truths, never mentioning any doubts or questions. Seldom do reporters inquire about how they became so certain, why they have such high confidence. That image simply isn´t true. A major disconnect exists between what really happens and reported science. Real science is always subject to revision, never "absolutely final." In everyday conversation, a person might say "I´m absolutely certain about that" but among responsible scientists, even the strongest affirmations always begin with "To the best

Along the winding muddy waters of the Mekong Delta where he once patrolled for communist insurgents on a naval gunboat, Secretary of State John Kerry turned his sights Sunday on a new enemy: climate change. In this remote part of southern Vietnam, rising sea waters, erosion and the impact of upstream dam development on the Mekong River are proving a more serious threat than the Viet Cong guerrillas that Kerry battled as a young lieutenant in 1968 and 1969. "Decades ago on these very waters, I was one of many who witnessed the difficult period in our shared history," Kerry told a
