The New York Times is wringing its hands over the damage being done to the city´s artists and independent professionals by Obamacare. The sort of people who worship at the altar of Obama and who regard the Times and its editorial pronouncements (including those on Obamacare) as holy scripture. Cliff Their writes, "I haven´t laughed so hard in a long time." Anemona Hartocollis of the Gray Lady writes: Many in New York´s professional and cultural elite have long supported President Obama´s health care plan. But now, to their surprise, thousands of writers, opera singers, music teachers, photographers, doctors, lawyers and

The US Congress is set to adopt a law next week forbidding Turkey from using American funds to acquire a $4 billion missile system from a Chinese company blacklisted by Washington. The United States has voiced deep concern over Turkey´s decision in September to enter negotiations with China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corporation for its first long-range anti-missile system. CPMIEC, which makes the HQ-9 missile system, is under US sanctions for selling arms and missile technology to Iran and Syria. Turkey´s move also irritated its allies in Nato, which has said missile systems within the transatlantic military

A few days ago, America experienced the 72nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. At the end of September, the world observed the 75th anniversary of the Munich Agreement, whereby Britain and France surrendered Czechoslovakia´s Sudetenland to Hitler´s Germany. Nazi Germany annexed most of the rest of Czechoslovakia within months, and invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, thus beginning the Second World War. What do Pearl Harbor, the Munich Pact, and Germany´s invasion of Poland have in common? The common thread running through these events is that western democracies´ military weakness tempted

Fox News Channel host Megyn Kelly took on the left-wing hate mob that has come after her following a humorous segment that she featured on her program Wednesday evening in which she and her guests staged a mock debate over the racial identity of Santa Claus. To the haters, Kelly had a message tonight: Lighten up and learn to realize what satire is. “Humor is a part of what we try to bring to this show but sometimes that is lost on the humorless,” she said. Since the Wednesday segment, an absurd controversy has been swirling around the newly minted primetime host in which Foxophobic television and internet outlets seemed unable

Ronald Reagan knew the progressive rationale so well that he could sum it up in one pithy phrase: "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ´I´m from the government and I´m here to help.´" Progressives usually wrap their agenda in pretty packages topped with a big bow of "helpfulness." Worse, they may even use the word "love." The tiny state of Delaware, which is where I live, is overwhelmingly liberal in composition, so the state, which seems to be a sort of testing ground for every notion the current federal administration comes up with, is filled with "helpful" and "loving" progressive initiatives. But it appears the state

With all the recent talk about Nelson Mandela the myth and the modicum of talk about Mandela the man, it´s a good opportunity to discuss another myth: that of apartheid. Oh, I know, modernist dogma dictates we behave not just as if the South African system Mandela so stridently fought was not only unsustainable, but also completely unfathomable. After all, the idea of second-class status for any group is anathema to Westerners (unless it happens to be non-Muslims in Islamic lands, of course). I was just a teenager when world pressure to end apartheid started to reach a fever pitch. My immediate reaction was that the intended

Harry Reid´s ham-fisted action to curb the filibuster of presidential appointment creates an enormous political opportunity for Republicans in 2014. As more than one pundit has noted, ending the filibuster for nominations means that a Senate Republican majority can end the filibuster for legislation as well, and Reid has removed the political cover for Democrats who would have used the filibuster to block Republican initiatives. What we have today bears remarkable similarities to the Republican tidal wave twenty years ago, in 1994. Newt Gingrich and other House Republicans tested with polling data the most telling weaknesses of

On Thursday, in a plain courtroom in the centre of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, a 67-year-old man called Jang Song Thaek was sentenced to death as a traitor to his country. His ‘crime’, according to the special military tribunal of the country’s Ministry of State Security, was to attempt ‘to overthrow the state by all sorts of intrigues and despicable methods with a wild ambition to grab the supreme power’. [Snip] Furthermore, he ‘perpetrated thrice-cursed acts of treachery in betrayal of such profound trust and warmest paternal love shown by the Party and the leader for him’. In his oration at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service on Tuesday, Barack Obama asked himself “how well have I applied his lessons in my own life?”, and invited all of us to ask the same question of ourselves. [Snip] His performance reminded me slightly of Tom Lehrer’s Folk Song Army: “We all hate poverty, war and injustice – unlike the rest of you squares.” Such rhetoric is consistent with the tone that Mr Obama has used from the beginning of his presidency, notably when he reached out to Islam in his speech in Cairo in June 2009. It is by now not too early – in some respects, it may even be too late – to ask whether Mr Obama’s

The White House says that ObamaCare is all fixed, but its conduct suggests otherwise. As it has realized that the government-created chaos is exposing patients to nasty and even deadly surprises, the government is now forcing the insurance industry to cover everyone retroactively and also to waive the contractual terms of that coverage—or else. Late Thursday, the Health and Human Services Department suddenly released a new regulation that explains "there have been unforeseen barriers to enrollment on the exchanges." The passive voice is necessary because the barriers are all the result of politically driven delays, the botched website

In the last day a very interesting story has emerged. It seems the Democratic National Committee has set its sights on continuing its “war on women” bit by attacking both Rush Limbaugh and the Daily Caller, as seen here in the DC, here in Politico and here in Mediaite. Rush and Daily Caller reporter Patrick Howley (a former colleague here at The American Spectator) are certainly capable of defending themselves, as they have both done today in their respective venues. But the DNC has raised a very interesting subject when its deputy communications director Lily Adams said this in a letter posted on the DNC website:

Oppressive regimes throughout history have built cities of false facades meant to impress from afar, concealing the embarrassing condition of the places. In its quest to persuade Americans that Obamacare is working, the Obama administration has built the most expensive Potemkin website yet. Rep. Darrell E. Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, wants to bulldoze the facade of Healthcare.gov to find what lies beneath, but Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is telling her aides they better keep quiet, or else. President Obama lives an extravagant life of which the kings of old could only dream — and all at the taxpayers’ expense. According to the Congressional Research Service, it costs $180,000 an hour to operate Air Force One. This means that President Obama’s recent trip to South Africa to attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral cost the American taxpayer $5 million in airfare alone. The president’s security detail, which includes Secret Service agents, along with all their equipment and armored vehicles, is transported onboard the Air Force’s massive C-17 cargo planes. At $24,000 an hour, a C-17 is a bargain compared to the President’s Boeing 747.

Back in the 1960s, the rallying cry of the counterculture was coined by Timothy Leary: “Turn on, tune in, drop out.” Today America’s young are also rebelling against the establishment. But this time their target is ObamaCare, and their rallying cry is “Opt Out!” The battle is being fought across smart phones, social media and Internet sites by organizations such as Generation Opportunity, a self-described “free-thinking, liberty-loving, national organization of young people promoting the best of being American.” Generation Opportunity sponsors OptOut.org, where visitors can watch videos of a Creepy Uncle Sam trying to get unsuspecting

Jameis Winston and Johnny Manziel had incredible seasons—but their off-the-field exploits stole the headlines. Who really deserves college football’s most prestigious award? Something has been left out of the discussion for this year’s Heisman Trophy: football. This year two of the finalists for college football’s most prestigious award—Florida State’s Jameis Winston and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel—have had the press spending a lot more ink on their off-the-field activities. Last year Manziel, a.k.a Johnny Football, became the first freshman in Heisman history to win the award as “the outstanding college football player” in the country.

CBS News learned Thursday that the information National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has revealed so far is just a fraction of what he has. In fact, he has so much, some think it is worth giving him amnesty to get it back. Rick Ledgett is the man who was put in charge of the Snowden leak task force by Gen. Keith Alexander, who heads the NSA. The task force´s job is to prevent another leak like this one from happening again. They´re also trying to figure out how much damage the Snowden leaks have done, and how much damage they could still do. North Korea‘s cherub tyrant Kim Jong Un startled the outside world this week by having a top regime official, who also happens to be his uncle, dragged from a public meeting and later executed. A creepy statement from North Korea’s official news agency accuses Jang Song Thaek of numerous crimes, including plotting against the regime and leading “a dissolute and depraved life” that included womanizing and gambling. One of the giveaways, according to the statement, was that at an ecstatic Workers Party of Korea meeting, Jang “behaved so arrogantly and insolently as unwillingly standing up from his seat and half-heartedly clapped

Paul Ryan's presidential prospects may have dimmed this week, but his future on Capitol Hill has never looked brighter. The budget compromise he struck with Sen. Patty Murray, which passed the House on a lopsided 332-94 vote Thursday, had conservative activists and outside groups howling. That might one day curb Republican enthusiasm for Paul Ryan the presidential candidate. But inside the dome, overwhelming support for Paul Ryan the policymaker—even from those voting against his proposal—armed him with a major legislative victory and a reputation as a bipartisan consensus-builder. That means bigger things

But as he sat in a hotel room in Geneva in early 2007, he was anxious about a secret mission he had planned to Iran. “I guess as I approach my fifty-ninth birthday on the 10th of March, and after having done quite a few other crazy things in my life,” he wrote in an email to a friend, “I am questioning just why, at this point, with seven kids and a great wife, why would I put myself in such jeopardy.” He would like some assurance,

It is a low-rent site that traffics in the most absurd smears and conspiracy theories. Many have wondered for some years who finances far-left web sites like Think Progress. As of today, we know at least part of the answer, as CAP released its corporate donor list for the first time. CAP says that individuals and foundations

Let me begin with a categorical statement that, given current events and recent political history, can be easily defended: Barack Hussein Obama is a willful, indoctrinated child of the Left with strong Islamic sympathies who is not fit to govern. Indeed, he would not be fit to govern Lower Slobovia, let alone the United States of America. Obama is a historic disaster of the first magnitude and, if not restrained, he will see to the irrevocable decline of the country which foolishly elected him, leaving the world on the brink of a conflict — or in the midst of one — whose repercussions cannot be underestimated.
