White House´s Obamacare

#GetCovered? More like #GetReal. When the White House posted a tweet about Obamacare featuring the president holding a sign, it probably didn´t expect the kind of reaction it got. The message, which was posted last night on the official White House Twitter feed, was simple enough: "Nobody should go broke just because they get sick." It urges people to #GetCovered under Obamacare. The photo in the tweet shows the president holding the sign with the message, but the sign contained ample space for people to create their own messages with Photoshop or other editing software. And create they did. Some were

In his 1952 book The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy, Israeli historian J. L. Talmon described a political system in which lawfully elected representatives rule a nation state whose citizens, although granted the right to vote, have little or no participation in the decision-making process of government. The federal government has become such a system, an entity unto itself operating outside of Constitutional constraints and unaccountable to the American people. The United States is now controlled by a Democratic and Republican ruling class that transcends government and sees itself as distinct from the rest of society and as the only element that may

The White House on Friday said President Obama had "in a very honest way addressed" questions over his statement that individuals could keep their health care plans under ObamaCare, named by fact-checker PolitiFact as "Lie of the Year." "The president, in an interview earlier this fall, took this question head-on and expressed his concern for those individuals, those Americans, who received cancellation notices and were potentially adversely impacted by or affected by that," White House press secretary Jay Carney said. But the White House spokesman went on to jab the fact-checking organization, who in 2012 had declared the president´s statement "half true." "You

Megyn Kelly Addresses White Santa

Megyn Kelly got quite a bit of attention for a segment she did Wednesday night on the unbearable whiteness of Jesus and Santa Claus. Kelly said she was just being “tongue-in-cheek” with her remarks and wasn’t at all being serious, lamenting the humorlessness of her critics in the media. Kelly played a montage of the most critical bits of her initial segment, taking particular note of her critics’ “knee-jerk instinct” to “race-bait,” making it clear she was not “motivated by any racial fear or loathing.” Kelly was roundly mocked for the segment, not only on Comedy Central, but on cable news competitors

Study shows it was warmer

Scientists may have figured out why Romans wore togas and the global warming theorists are not going to be pleased. A new study by Swiss scientists finds the earth was warmer during Roman and Medieval times than it is today, which indicates that greenhouse gases may not be the driving force behind the modern global warming trend. The study, by scientist Leif Kullman, analyzed 455 “radiocarbon-dated mega-fossils” in the Scandes Mountains and found that tree lines for different species of trees were higher during the Roman and Medieval times than they are today. Not only that, but the temperatures were higher

Benghazi, Libya, has become

BENGHAZI, Libya — Every week, about a dozen Syrians arrive at Benghazi’s airport for what’s described as insurgent training. When they fly out, they’re carrying fake Libyan passports, according to three officials familiar with the comings and goings of foreigners at the airport. The accounts of the officials, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the topic, are more evidence that this city in Libya has become a regional hub for Islamist extremists seeking to hone their combat skills. Fighters from Tunisia and Algeria also are thought to be training here, driving across Libya’s borders to reach Benghazi, the

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) announced Friday that an ObamaCare contractor would comply with a subpoena he issued, despite efforts by the Obama administration and some Democrats to keep the documents out of his hands. After consulting with its legal counsel, MITRE Corp., a contractor working to assess security issues with the ObamaCare website, determined that it “has no alternative but to comply with the terms of a Congressional subpoena absent some form of judicial intervention.” MITRE was the second ObamaCare contractor to say on Friday it would comply with the disputed subpoena, following CSSi. “MITRE’s decision is

On Friday, the Obama- and Clinton-allied Center for American Progress finally revealed its long-sought corporate donor list after heavy pressure arising from CAP’s quasi-lobbying history. That scrutiny ratcheted up following the announcement that CAP founder John Podesta would be formally joining the Obama administration. Both Politico and The New York Times called for the donor list to meet the public eye. And so CAP handed over the list to the leftist Huffington Post. Incredibly, its 2013 donor list contains a myriad of massive corporations, including Apple Inc., AT&T, Bank of America, BMW of North America, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Discovery, GE, Facebook,

To a large extent, we won.” How, exactly, did Media Matters win if Fox News remains a prohibitive ratings monster against competitors MSNBC and CNN, and retains far more of the public trust than either of those networks?

Tell Santa to bring President Barack Obama a stocking stuffer: a copy of the U.S. Constitution with the words "Laws be faithfully executed" underlined in red. Those words define the president´s most important duty. But Obama, himself a constitutional lawyer, is ignoring the Constitution and governing like a dictator. His latest ploy exempts unions from a fee the Affordable Care Act (ACA)imposes. Professor Jonathan Turley of George Washington University, who voted for Obama and professes to agree with him on health care and other issues, didn´t mince words when he testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Dec. 3. During the Obamacare rollout, stories have spread about millions of Americans losing their current health insurance coverage, preferred doctors and hospitals as plans restrict networks to comply with the law, and losing their prescription drug coverage. On Thursday afternoon, the Department of Health and Human Services said it was “strongly encouraging” insurers to help the department fix a raft of problems created by the rocky rollout of President Obama’s health care law. Among the guidance the HHS announced: — It is requiring insurers to accept payments until Dec. 31 for coverage starting on Jan. 1. It is also “urging” insurers

The cellphone encryption technology used most widely across the world can be easily defeated by the National Security Agency, an internal document shows, giving the agency the means to decode most of the billions of calls and texts that travel over public airwaves every day. While the military and law enforcement agencies long have been able to hack into individual cellphones, the NSA’s capability appears to be far more sweeping because of the agency’s global signals collection operation. The agency’s ability to crack encryption used by the majority of cellphones in the world offers it wide-ranging powers to listen in

At The Weekly Standard, Fred Barnes writes of House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan´s (R-WI) recent budget deal: "Now that [the sequester´s] caps have been breached once, they’re bound to be tossed aside again. And the greatest tool for curbing the growth of government in the lifetime of most Americans will be lost." Barnes is dead right. Ryan can claim that his deal with Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray (D-WA) preserved most of the sequester. But once those first two years were breached, the odds that all the other years will also be rescinded, skyrocketed. The sequester may not

American conservatism is a unique ideological movement in the Western world. Unlike European conservatism, which maintains a strain of progressivism that the American right largely shrugged off about a century ago, modern American conservatism is a philosophy marked by a deep and abiding mistrust of man’s ability to control events and accurately prescribe remedies for societal ills. It is an ideology acutely aware of its own limits and the limits of others. As a result of this humility, conservatism in the United States preaches decentralization, checks on authority, and constraints on power lest the public be subject to the tyranny of

Yuval Levin breaks down what the Obama administration is now attempting, in order to save Obamacare. As usual, it’s hard to tell just what’s going on inside the administration regardingObamacare, but I don’t think we can really take the steps announced by HHSyesterday as anything but a bright, red, flashing warning light about the internal expectations regarding January. Some of what they announced is frankly bizarre and slightly crazy. Beside extending the high-risk pool program (which isn’t nuts, just a strong indication that they’re not ready for January at this very late stage), they are asking insurers to pay claims for consumers

The latest middle finger from an increasingly lawless and desperate administration. I´m not a lawyer, but I´m fairly confident that "we don´t think much of you" is an acceptable reason to ignore a Congressional subpoena: The Health and Human Services Department told House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa that it won’t turn over documents related to the security of the Healthcare.gov website because it can’t trust him to keep secret information that could give hackers a roadmap to wreak havoc on the system. Did Paul Ryan’s budget deal save the Republican party from itself? I think it did. Everyone acknowledges that Ryan-Murray is not a great deal. The fact is, its passage will avoid a government shutdown. That’s crucial. If the GOP wants to retake the Senate and hold the House in 2014, the key issues must be the catastrophic pitfalls of Obamacare and better economic growth. A shutdown would be a distraction. It would take the heat off President Obama, off Obamacare, and off all the Democrats who falsely promised that if you like your insurance and doctor, you can keep them.

The replacement of Miguel Rodriguez with Katie Beirne Fallon came as a shock to some former administration officials, who noted that Fallon was chosen over internal candidates with more experience. “So now we´re just turning the keys over the Congress,” one former senior administration official said about Beirne Fallon’s hiring. ‘Obamacare was sold on a trinity of lies.” That ornate phrase, more suitable for the Book of Revelations or perhaps the next installment of Game of Thrones, comes from my National Review colleague Rich Lowry. But I like it. Most people know the first deception in the triumvirate of deceit: “If you like your health insurance you can keep it, period.” The second leg in the tripod of deception was “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” But the third plank in the triad of disinformation hasn’t gotten much attention: Obamacare will save you, me, and the country
