WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – A secret surveillance drone is under development by Northrop Grumman, reports Aviation Week. The unmanned aircraft is still classified and is being tested at the notorious Area 51 in the Nevada desert. There’s been no official word from either the Pentagon or Northrup, but Aviation Week says the drone is called the RQ-180 and will go into service in the Air Force in 2015. The drone is equipped with stealth technology, advance radar, radio-frequency sensors and cameras, says the trad

Palestinians draw parallels with

The death of Nelson Mandela has given fresh impetus to Palestinian efforts to portray the Israeli occupation as a form of apartheid that should be confronted with a similar international campaign that took on South Africa´s white regime. Mandela´s message of solidarity from a 1997 speech in which he said "our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians", has been repeatedly invoked across Palestine in the past week. Demonstrators carried posters of Mandela who also strongly criticised Israel´s close ties to the apartheid government, at regular weekly protests against Jewish settlements and the vast concrete and steel separation barrier in

On Tuesday, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., revealed their budget plan to the world. I would say it was immediately met with complaints, but those complaints started before it was introduced. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But are there other plans? No. Outside groups called for opposing it before they’d read it, Members of Congress said they’d vote against it before they knew what was in it. I’d like to take these people with me to buy lottery tickets since they seem to have some form of clairvoyance. I get the anger of conservatives, I’m right

Iowa’s highly touted crackdown on improper voting finally has resulted in some arrests that appear to justify Secretary of State Matt Schultz’ concerns. (snip)On Sept. 26, Tehvedin Murgic of Dallas County pleaded guilty to reduced misdemeanor charges of voter misconduct in the 2010 election. He was fined $1,325. Schultz’ investigators busted Nickie Dean Perkins for failing to disclose his felony convictions when he registered to vote in 2012. Another investigation centers on Linn County voter alleged to have submitted an absentee ballot in another’s name. That investigation is pending. After reporting on several elections decided by one vote, we can commend Schultz

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is being accused by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., of “criminal obstruction.” Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, stated in a letter to Sebelius that the Health and Human Services Department instructed Creative Computing Solutions – a contractor that worked on HealthCare.gov — not to comply with the committee’s investigation. “The Department’s hostility toward questions from Congress and the media about the implementation of ObamaCare is well known,” the letter obtained by CBS News says. “The Department’s most recent effort to stonewall, however, has morphed from mere obstinacy into criminal obstruction of a congressional

Good news for Julie Andrews! The star of the 1965 film version of "The Sound of Music" told the Associated Press on Monday that she had not seen the live broadcast of "The Sound of Music" starring Carrie Underwood on NBC last week. Now the network has plans to re-air the three-hour production on Saturday at 8 p.m. "The Sound of Music Live" originally aired on Thursday and was a huge success for the network, which took a risk with a live broadcast of a musical that's been around since 1959. The first airing had a total audience of 18.6 million viewers, which outperformed the network's expectations.

WASHINGTON — State Sen. Elbert Guillory, R-Opelousas, said he is most likely going to run for lieutenant governor in 2015, rather than pursue a U.S. Senate bid next year. Guillory, 69, has seen his popularity rise among conservative circles since switching from the Democratic Party earlier this year. The change made him the only black Republican in the Louisiana Legislature. Since then, Guillory has said he would consider running either for the Senate against Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., or for the lieutenant governor seat that Lt. Gov. Jay Darden is expected to vacate in his bid to become governor.

Her sexy wardrobe (and racy reputation) have earned her the nickname ‘Gucci Helle’ in her native Denmark. It’s the kind of profile you would normally associate with, say, a footballer’s wife, or a model, not a prime minister. But then Danish leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt, 46, who dragged Barack Obama and David Cameron into that embarrassing ‘selfie’, is not a typical head of state, not by British standards anyway. How many premiers, for example, when heckled at a public meeting about their wardrobe would have replied bluntly: ‘We can’t all look like s***.’ Or boarded a military plane to wartorn Libya

BANGUI, Central African Republic — African peacekeepers fired into the air Thursday in Central African Republic’s chaotic capital, trying to disperse a mob bent on hunting down and killing Muslims taking refuge in a church compound. The unrest in Bangui underscored the rage and uncertainty that remains in the capital of the Central African Republic, despite the arrival of 1,600 French soldiers and patrols by regional African peacekeepers. The two forces are seeking to stabilize this impoverished, now lawless, country after more than 500 people were killed last week in sectarian bloodshed.

If there’s one off-the-cuff remark that will follow Chris Matthews for the rest of his career as a pundit, it has to be time time in 2008 when he said, in reference to a speech by then-candidate Barack Obama, “I felt this thrill going up my leg.” It’s the one line for which conservatives love to make fun of him most, and he knows it. During a Wednesday evening debate over divisions within the Republican Party, Matthews chose to voluntarily reference the infamous quote and defend the sentiment behind it. Republican strategist Steve Schmidt was denouncing the current state of

How much in actual health care could have been paid for with the taxpayer amounts currently being spent on developing websites for people to sign up for health insurance plans they aren´t happy with?. Consider Oregon. According to the most recent numbers from the Kaiser Foundation the average cost of one day of in patient hospital care in Oregon was $2,967. Oregon has 36 hospitals with a total of 5916 beds, $300 million in state and federal funds used for Oregon to build its website. would pay for 101,112 days of hospitalization - enough to fill every hospital bed in Oregon

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced this morning that nearly 365,000 Americans had signed up for private health insurance under Obamacare. The vast majority came from 14 states running their own insurance exchanges, while 137,000 came by way of HealthCare.gov, the much-faulted federal Web site that handles enrollment for the remaining states. But amid the rush to enroll as many people as possible by the Dec. 23 deadline, there’s a huge caveat that isn’t getting much public attention: For coverage to take effect on Jan. 1, enrollees must pay their first month’s premium on time. On a recent afternoon, executives at Goldman Sachs invited a few hundred major investors to the auditorium of the firm’s gleaming headquarters in lower Manhattan. The bankers and their guests filed into the sleek, futuristic room and turned their eyes to Hillary Clinton. Ordinarily these masters of the universe might have groaned at the idea of a politician taking the microphone. In the contentious years since the crash of 2008, they’ve grown wearily accustomed to being called names—labeled “fat cats" by President Obama and worse by those on the left—and gotten used to being largely shunned by Tea Party Republicans for

The report looks at Planned Parenthood’s impact, health services and financial situation.

Why did 91 heads of state and 71 so-called eminent persons fly from all the corners of the earth to attend Nelson Mandela’s memorial service on Tuesday? Most of them will doubtless have wanted to pay their respects to one of the great men of our age. [Snip] There can be jokes and laughter. But there is no room for larking about, especially if you are one of the leaders of the Free World. Larking about may scarcely cover the behaviour of President Barack Obama, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of Denmark, and our own David Cameron during the memorial service.

The “Fomo” stands for Fear of Missing Out, a defining characteristic of a generation with itchy thumbs and short attention spans. Fomo sapiens cannot leave its phones, tablets or laptops alone, no matter how inappropriate the occasion. Checking your texts or updating your Facebook status during a funeral, for instance, or taking a happy-snap of yourself with a couple of mates during a memorial service. Those, I
