Indian Court Reinstates Law
Banning Gay Sex

NEW DELHI — India´s Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a lower court´s ruling that decriminalized gay sex, a move condemned by gay rights activists as a big step backward in their struggle for acceptance in this largely conservative country. In 2009 the Delhi High Court ruled that a 19th-century provision in the country´s penal code that prohibited people from engaging in "carnal acts against the order of nature" should not apply to consenting adults, including same-sex couples. The Supreme Court rejected that decision Wednesday, saying the old law was still constitutionally valid and could only be changed or erased through Parliament, not

ISTANBUL, Turkey — The United States has suspended delivery of non-lethal aid into northern Syria due to concerns over gains by Islamist rebels there, a U.S. official said on Tuesday. The suspension halts direct U.S. assistance to Syria’s rebel-held north, long an opposition stronghold and the focal point of U.S. efforts to support the country’s moderate opposition. The affected aid includes supplies such as food and medicine, as well as vehicles and communications equipment. (Snip)The suspension comes in response to a worrisome development for the Free Syrian Army, or FSA, the moderate rebel coalition backed by the U.S. and its western

When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what

Nearly 365,000 people selected a private health plan on state Obamacare markets through the end of November — a sign that people are flocking to the patched-up federal website, HealthCare.gov — although the new pace falls short of long-range projections for an inaugural sign-up period that ends in March. The Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday announced a total of 364,682 enrollees in private health plans from all states in Oct. 1-Nov. 30. The release came shortly before agency Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was slated to testify before Congress about the state of the health care law’s implementation. The new report

JOHANNESBURG — Police in South Africa say retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu´s home was robbed while he was away to attend a memorial honoring Nelson Mandela. A statement Wednesday from the South African Police Service said the robbery of Tutu´s home in Cape Town happened between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday. That was the day the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and foe of apartheid spoke at the memorial service at a soccer stadium in Soweto township of Johannesburg. WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama´s top health official is asking for an investigation into the administration´s botched rollout of HealthCare.gov. The website was supposed to have been the online portal to insurance coverage under the new health care law, but technical problems turned it into a frustrating bottleneck for millions of consumers. It´s working better now after two months of repairs. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a blog post early Wednesday that she is asking the department´s inspector general to investigate the contracting process, management and performance and payment issues that may have contributed to

Tuesday’s handshake between Obama and Castro comes after six months of quiet diplomacy between the United States and Cuba—and Castro signaling he’s ready for bigger talks. Since the Cuban revolution, the island’s ties with the United States have been marred by espionage, near war, sabotage, and deep distrust. But since President Obama came to office in 2009, Cuban leader Raul Castro has signaled that he is interested in a new relationship, according to current and former U.S. officials. Earlier this year, Castro agreed to host peace talks between Colombia and the FARC, a Marxist rebel group that until recently Cuba and

Senate Democrats facing tough reelections say President Obama has not done enough to fix the botched rollout of his healthcare law and are vowing to repair it themselves. The Senate Democratic leadership is not on board with lawmaker plans to begin rewriting ObamaCare and have urged for more time to assess the changes made by Obama and his team, lawmakers say.

Once there was a boy so meek and modest, he was awarded a Most Humble badge. The next day, It was taken away because he wore it. Here endeth the lesson. How do you practice humility from the most exalted throne on earth? Rarely has a new player on the world stage captured so much attention so quickly—young and old, faithful and cynical—as has Pope Francis. In his nine months in office, he has placed himself at the very center of the central conversations of our time: about wealth and poverty, fairness and justice, transparency, modernity, globalization, the role of

I´m annoyed that so many Hollywood celebrities hate the system that made them rich. Actor/comedian Russell Brand told the BBC he wants "a socialist, egalitarian system based on the massive redistribution of wealth." Director George Lucas got rich not just from movies but also by selling Star Wars merchandise. Yet he says he believes in democracy but "not capitalist democracy." Actor Martin Sheen says, "That´s where the problem lies ... It´s corporate America." And so on. On my TV show, actor/author Kevin Sorbo pointed out that such sentiments make little sense coming from entertainers. "It´s a very entrepreneurial business.

We´ve all seen selfies taken in questionable places. During a school lockdown. In front of a man attempting suicide. At Auschwitz. Now, some people are adding President Obama to the list of people with poor selfie judgment after the leader of the free world posed with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service Tuesday in South Africa. It appears from photos of the incident that Obama was not the instigator (that distinction goes to Thorning-Schmidt). But he seems to have participated happily, though First Lady Michelle Obama seemed unimpressed by the whole spectacle.

Rep. Lou Barletta (R., Pa.) introduced a bill Tuesday that will exempt volunteer fire departments from having to pay for their members’ insurance benefits. The current IRS policy defines volunteer firefighters as employees for federal tax purposes. If voted into law, the Protecting Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act will redefine volunteers as non-employees, which will relieve fire departments from the burden of paying for volunteers’ health insurance. “Without further guidance from the IRS—which could have issued a clarification immediately if it so chose—we have no choice but to pursue a legislative fix to yet another problem with Obamacare,” Barletta

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is spending an additional $55 million to “bolster” the healthcare workforce, as Obamacare contributes to shortages in the industry. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced last week that her agency will provide over 270 grants “from diversity to dentistry” to address worker shortages in the healthcare industry. The funding includes $45.4 million to support the nursing workforce, $5.2 million of which will go towards “improving nursing diversity.” The grants also provide $2.4 million for training of doctoral-level psychologists to “address the behavioral health needs of vulnerable and underserved populations,” and $3 million to

ObamaCare has as its modus operandi a focus on medical management by already beleaguered primary care physicians and para-health professionals, at the expense of medical and surgical specialists. The law´s administrators hope to control costs by cutting already bare-bones specialty physician payments, limiting medical technology and access to imaging, and instituting de facto health care rationing. Medicine has been increasingly high-tech and more specialist-oriented, resulting in better, albeit more expensive, care. To cut expenses, ObamaCare is naïvely turning to an outmoded model of health care delivery -- one that has been shown to have comparatively poor patient outcomes.

"Mr. President, I think I need to resign." In July 2003, six months after President Bush falsely declared in his State of the Union Address that Saddam Hussein had tried to buy yellowcake uranium powder from Africa, Stephen Hadley wanted to take the fall. The CIA had told him prior to the address that the evidence was dubious, and it was his job to vet the speech. "Ugh, Hadley," Bush said, brushing off his deputy national security advisor. According to Peter Baker´s book "Days of Fire," Hadley persisted. He explained that the president should expect the highest standards and those

A year that began with President Barack Obama riding high after his re-election victory and inauguration ends with him in the biggest hole of his presidency. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds the president with more Americans disapproving of his job performance than ever before; with half saying they’re either disappointed or dissatisfied with his presidency; and with 54% believing he’s facing a long-term setback. Perhaps more significantly, Obama has seen a drop in key presidential attributes, such as being honest and straightforward, being able to handle a crisis and being able to achieve his goals. “These are

The federal health-care law is becoming a heavier political burden for President Barack Obama and his party, despite increased confidence in the economy and the public´s own generally upbeat sense of well-being, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll suggests. Disapproval of Mr. Obama´s job performance hit an all-time high in the poll, at 54%, amid the flawed rollout of the health law. Half of those polled now consider the law a bad idea, also a record high. The survey of 1,000 adults conducted between Dec. 4 and Dec. 8 found a sharp erosion since January in many of the

The site still exists, but on December 10, 2013, it took its own life: “Obama Has Taken A Funeral Selfie,” reads the final post, “So Our Work Here Is Done.” How did we get here? It wasn’t quite a selfie that POTUS snapped, and it wasn’t exactly a
