What Obamacare Coverage

Some members of Congress are about to get their own kind of sticker shock when they head to the new insurance exchanges. A few will get a price cut. As the Journal has reported, a provision in the health law requires lawmakers to get their benefits alongside small-business employees for the first time, and that means lawmakers’ premiums will suddenly be tied to their age. Members of Congress used to pay the same rate, regardless of how old they were, which was around $186 a month to cover just themselves on one popular plan after their employer (in this case, the

What would you think if someone knocked on your door one day and threatened to sue you for everything you’re worth unless you paid a settlement fee to make them go away? That’s what patent trolls do to thousands of small businesses every year, causing tens of billions in economic damage. Fortunately, with growing awareness and support, the patent trolls’ lucrative racket is in jeopardy. On Thursday a new bill sponsored by House Judiciary chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) called the Innovation Act in set to go before the House of Representatives. If passed, the bill promises to put in place vital

Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Obama’s Failed Approach Has

President Obama has declared his renewed commitment to fighting income inequality. But we now have five years of evidence to draw upon, and it’s clear that Obama’s methods in this regard have failed miserably. In fact, they’ve worked about as well as Obamacare. Obama’s approach to addressing income inequality, of course, is to funnel ever more money and power to Washington, while promoting a culture of cozy cronyism between Big Government and Big Business (especially Big “Green” Business). When having a well-positioned team of Washington lawyers and lobbyists becomes a necessary prerequisite to getting ahead, that’s hardly conducive to Main St.

CHAMBLEE, Ga. -- One Saturday in November, Kaveh Kamooneh drove his Nissan Leaf to Chamblee Middle School, where his 11-year-old son was playing tennis. Kamooneh had taken the liberty of charging the electric car with an exterior outlet at the school. Within minutes of plugging in the car, he says a Chamblee police officer appeared. "He said that he was going to charge me with theft by taking because I was taking power, electricity from the school," Kamooneh said. Kamooneh says he had charged his car for 20 minutes, drawing about a nickel´s worth of juice. Don Francis of Clean Cities Atlanta, an

In the waiting room of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s radiation treatment center, I discovered that in the race of life, those running to stay on the track are among the most determined, hopeful and courageous. They’re also grateful, for it’s in the sanctuary of sympathetic and expert care where cancer patients experience calm and clarity after the storm of diagnosis and decision-making. As if living with cancer-induced anxiety weren’t enough, many Sloan-Kettering patients must Think Again about their treatment since the cancer center is among many prominent hospitals no longer “in network” for most Obamacare-compliant insurance plans. Americans already have the world’s

Recently, a prominent Massachusetts Democrat spotted Senator Elizabeth Warren at an airport and saw an opportunity. Have you read The New Republic, Philip W. Johnston asked Warren playfully, showing her the cover of the magazine he had just purchased. It was devoted to whether Warren would run for president. Warren wasn’t having any of it. She answered with an exaggerated eye roll that cut short any further talk of the 2016 presidential race. “She doesn’t want to talk about it in any serious way,” said Johnston, a supporter. On Wednesday, Warren became so sick of media speculation that she might run as a populist

This is not a return to Diana West’s book. However, Andy McCarthy, a man for whom I have very great respect and whom I like very much, has written a review of it in The New Criterion that, because of its revisionist presentation of a number of historical events, is among the most discouraging political documents I have read in many years. (Snip) First is Andy McCarthy’s view that the scandalous, cowardly refusal of the mainstream elite of American culture and politics to recognize that America’s Islamist enemies are enemies can be traced to Soviet infiltration of the U.S. government

Administration Finalizes Obamacare

The Obama administration quietly finalized the Health Insurance Tax (HIT) over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a provision in Obamacare that will cost nearly $60 billion over the next five years and raise health care premiums by 3 percent. The final rule, published on Nov. 27, imposes a fee beginning in 2014 for health insurers with premium revenues over $25 million per year. The annual tax is levied for “United States health risks,” and is hidden from consumers since it is directly assessed on health insurance companies. David R. Burton, a senior fellow in economic policy at the Heritage Foundation, said

WASHINGTON — President Obama and congressional Democrats, seizing on the good news of an improving health care website and rising enrollments, on Wednesday highlighted parts of the law that are popular with the public and reminded Americans, and the law’s opponents, of what would be lost if the Affordable Care Act were repealed. As part of that political counteroffensive, which began this week, Democratic congresswomen challenged Republicans to present an alternative that would provide free preventive health services for the 105 million Americans who have already received them under the law. At the same time, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

President Obama, in remarks about the economy today, said, The combined trends of income inequality and decreasing (economic) mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe. He then called for — drum roll – a higher minimum wage, repeal of the sequester, and extension of unemployment compensation benefits. And he stressed that Obamacare will boost the economy. It doesn’t appear to have dawned on the president yet that we’re entering the sixth year of the Obama presidency.

More Pipelines in the Pipeline

The Obama administration’s ongoing delay in approving the Keystone XL pipeline – which would transport Canadian oil to U.S. refiners on the Gulf of Mexico – is ostensibly based on concerns over the safety and reliability of oil pipelines, as well as concerns over climate change. At first, concerns focused on the protection of the Ogallala aquifer, but once the pipeline was re-routed to minimize such risks, climate concerns came to the fore. Discussing the pipeline last summer, President Obama focused on carbon, insisting that Keystone would not be approved if it will “significantly contribute to carbon in our atmosphere.”

Fox & Friends host Elisabeth Hasselbeck criticized President Barack Obama’s recent speech about income inequality, arguing that Obama was unwisely attempting to change the subject from the Affordable Care Act in a way that highlighted the growing inequality under his own presidency. “Obamacare isn’t working, so the president goes to his old faithful ‘class warfare argument,’” Hasselbeck said. “He’s saying he wants to take out inequality and his policies from the beginning have been to equalize.” But, she continued, “the top 1%—their income rose by 31.4% between 2009 and 2012. WASHINGTON – The U.S. economy grew at a 3.6 percent annual rate from July through September, the fastest since early 2012. But nearly half the growth came from a buildup in business stockpiles, a trend that could reverse in the current quarter and hold back growth. The Commerce Department´s second estimate of third-quarter growth was much higher than the initial 2.8 percent rate reported last month. And it was well above the 2.5 percent growth rate for the April-June quarter. But almost the entire third-quarter revision came from a big jump in stockpiles. You may have noticed over these past 2,501 days that Barack Obama likes to give speeches, sometimes two or more a day. It´s better than Oval Office work. And yesterday the poor guy gave a particularly revealing one. He´s so desperate now that he modestly likened ObamaCare to the suffrage struggle and civil rights. [Snip] But here´s the largest challenge for Obama´s ObamaCare: He must ensure 40% of all enrollees are under 35 and willing to pay huge premiums for coverage they really don´t need. In the scaled eyes of our nation´s community organizer, that´s a kind of civic patriotism.

The buy was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by POLITICO. Cotton is running to oust incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor in what’s expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races of 2014.

If life under ObamaCare is as wonderful as supporters tell us, how come Harry Reid is keeping his staffers from enjoying it? As part of the Affordable Care Act, members of Congress and their office staffers are required to purchase their health insurance through the new ObamaCare exchanges. But Reid is the Senate majority leader. And he has just taken advantage of a loophole in the law that allows leaders in Congress to exempt their committee or leadership staffs. It makes for an illuminating contrast.

WASHINGTON—It is now apparent that our President has lied to us. He lied when he crooned soothingly about improving the healthcare of millions of Americans through vast changes in health policy that would actually lower their costs. Those costs are now going up, and they are going up for almost everyone. They will not come down. He lied when he said we could keep our present healthcare policy. Those policies are rapidly disappearing. He lied again when he said we could keep our doctors. He lied when he said his plan would not involve rationing. I could go on, but
