American education´s race to the bottom

The Department of Education spends billions of dollars annually, and touts phase three of its "race to the top," but the sad fact is that based on testing results, American education is on a race to the bottom. We spend more than any other nation on earth yet rank in the bottom quartile (26th out of 34) of OECD (developed) nations in the latest international comparison, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). We are paying filet mignon prices and getting Sonic Burger results, in other words.

Saturday the 7th of December will mark the seventy-second anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. (Snip) A glance at one of the nation’s leading high-school literature textbooks—Prentice Hall’s The American Experience, which has been aligned to the Common Core—will tell us how we are doing on that front. The opening page of the slim chapter devoted to World War II called “War Shock” features a photograph of a woman inspecting a large stockpile of thousand-pound bomb castings. The notes in the margins of the Teacher’s Edition set the tone: In this section, nonfiction prose and a single stark poem etch into

CNN´s analyst LZ Granderson has defended President Obama´s outright lies about Obamacare with some of the most insidious, cynical logic seen in recent years. According to Granderson, the American people have rationalized the health insurance lies fed to them by Obama by rationalizing them this way: "We can deal with the lies that President Obama tells us because we believe in his heart, he has the best interest for the American people." To his credit, Granderson doesn´t try to insult the CNN audience, or host Rosa Flores, by pretending Obama didn´t lie. Jay Carney, President Obama and most of the

A report from the Congressional Research Service says that it will “likely take several or more years” for the poverty rates in the United States to fall back to the levels they were before the last recession. The number of people living in poverty in the United States hit a record last year, according to Census Bureau data cited by CRS, and the poverty rate remained stuck at its highest level in two decades. “The 46.5 million persons counted as poor in 2012 is the largest number counted in the measure’s recorded history, which goes back as far as 1959,

[Video] Recent polling shows that an election wave of anti-ObamaCare sentiment is growing, and it is not only likely to hand the GOP control of the United States Senate, but might wipe out as many as 12 Democrat seats--many of which looked safe just a few months ago. Back in July, Five Thirty Eight´s election guru Nate Silver believed that control of the Senate was a tossup. That has all changed now that voters got their first real look at the brutal consequences of ObamaCare. Starting with the generic ballot that simply pits Republican lawmakers against their Democrat counterparts, the

As he was ascending to the pinnacle of power in the Senate Republican conference almost exactly seven years ago, Mitch McConnell planted the seeds of a feud that could conceivably end his career this May. Democrats, capitalizing on the public’s weariness with the Iraq War and outrage at the GOP’s Abramoff-era corruption, had taken control of both houses of Congress. And McConnell had been unanimously elected minority leader. As they are today, Republicans were searching for a way to reconnect with the public. McConnell, for example, canceled an annual lobbyist-funded retreat at the tony Greenbrier resort in West Virginia in favor of

Ed Rendell is the former Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania, a former DNC Chairman, and a longtime Clinton acolyte. He was on Team Hillary in 2008 and will likely feature prominently on her 2016 bandwagon, too. His biting commentary on Obamacare´s catastrophic roll-out, therefore, is noteworthy for two reasons: First, it´s a partisan Democrat criticizing the president´s handling of his signature domestic initiative in unusually harsh terms. And second, it´s a preview of how Team Hillary plans to cleanse itself of the Obamacare stench. Via MSNBC´s Morning Joe:

Detroit eligible for bankruptcy

DETROIT— Detroit is eligible for the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history because the city is broke and without Chapter 9 bankruptcy would continue on the path that has led it to insolvency, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday. Judge Steven Rhodes also ruled that while the city did not negotiate in "good faith" with creditors, there were too many of them to make such negotiations practical. Rhodes also said that public pensions could be cut in municipal bankruptcies. In addition, the judge said he would not stay the Detroit bankruptcy proceedings in the wake of any possible appeals, ruling

Hypocrisy and double standards are two things that disgust and infuriate all Americans, regardless of where they fall on the ideological spectrum. Unfortunately, these qualities are far too prevalent in our political culture today, and are prime reasons why Washington and the politicians that work there are held in such low regard. Nowhere is this more evident than in the implementation and implosion of ObamaCare. During the debate over the deeply flawed bill in 2009 and 2010, voters were repeatedly assured by President Obama and his congressional allies that everyone who liked their current health care plan would be able to keep it.

London — Britain and France have been the cat and dog of Europe, yapping and hissing at each other over the centuries, but they’re singing the same song now in close harmony over immigration and what to do about how it’s changing the face of Europe. The not-so-huddled masses are yearning to breathe free on the ride to a good life in the prosperous countries. The music is familiar to American ears, but the words are brisk and straightforward, unencumbered by the fear of being politically incorrect. The French still call the English “the Anglo-Saxons,” as if history has stood still.

Detroit´s historic bankruptcy will move forward after a judge ruled Tuesday that the financially crumbling city is eligible to shed billions in debt. Judge Steven Rhodes turned down objections from unions, pension funds and retirees, which all stand to lose big under any plan to address Detroit´s long-term liabilities. The decision Tuesday was long-awaited, and clears the way for the city to proceed in the largest public bankruptcy in U.S. history. "This once proud and prosperous city can´t pay its debts. It´s insolvent. It´s eligible for bankruptcy," Rhodes said in announcing his decision. "At the same time, it also has

Fans of economic policy may recall that during one of the many recent debt ceiling showdowns, the idea to mint a trillion-dollar platinum coin came to the fore. It turns out that the Obama administration took the idea seriously enough to have the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel draft memos pertaining to its legality, a fact belied by the White House’s out-of-hand dismissal of the option in January. In response to the Huffington Post’s Freedom of Information Act request, the OLC confirmed that memos about the legality of minting a high-value platinum coin had been written since Obama took

Could the GOP be on the cusp of a JFK moment on the national political scene? Before simply dismissing the idea out of hand, consider the following: John F.Kennedy´s appeal in the 1960 presidential campaign was built around his basic summons to the country: "Let´s get America moving again." Fast forward to President Obama's America, which suffers from an economy that sputters along in a slow-growth purgatory, with millions of people dropping out of the workforce, even as Obamacare pushes many of those still working to accept part-time schedules.

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem has received America’s highest honor. President Obama bestowed upon Steinem the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In so doing, he honored the work of not only Steinem but Margaret Sanger, liberalism’s iconic racial eugenicist. Celebrating her award at the National Press Club, Steinem said she hoped Obama’s action would be “honoring the work of Margaret Sanger.” It indeed has done just that. Margaret Sanger longed for a more enlightened time when birth control would be (as she put it) “part of the regular welfare service of the government.” In this, she was inspired by Stalin’s Soviet Union — literally.

Rep. Mike Rogers provides a cheery thought on personal security as the White House gears up to sell ObamaCare all over again. Last night, he told Greta van Susteren that data security on Healthcare.gov didn’t even meet “minimal standards” for the industry. In terms of the “private-sector velocity and efficiency” claimed by the Obama administration over the last couple of days, Rogers says that experts warned him that they would be sued out of business if they rolled out a website with this many security gaps. It’s so bad, Rogers warns, that the White House refused to brief Congress on the

Wealthy conservatives use DonorsTrust as a sure-fire way to invest their money, fingerprint-free, with the assurance it will end up in the right hands. According to new tax filings obtained by Mother Jones, DonorsTrust is growing increasingly popular among the bankrollers of the conservative movement. Last year, DonorsTrust (and its sister group, Donors Capital Fund) doled out a
