Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the Saudi royal who seems to own most everything there is to own -- a chunk of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, a piece of Twitter, all of Paris’s George V Hotel, the Savoy in London, and a Boeing 747 for his personal use -- was sitting in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago the other evening (he and Bill Gates own most of Four Seasons Holdings), offering up the view -- the view of an experienced negotiator from the Middle East -- that U.S. President Barack Obama is outmatched by the Islamic Republic

WARSAW, Poland -- Avoiding a last-minute breakdown, annual U.N. climate talks limped forward Saturday with a modest set of decisions meant to pave the way for a new pact to fight global warming. More than 190 countries agreed in Warsaw to start preparing "contributions" for the new deal, which is supposed to be adopted in 2015. That term was adopted after China and India objected to the word "commitments" in a standoff with the U.S. and other developed countries.

Britain’s Court of Appeal upheld a ban of a radio ad this week that had initially been banned by the then Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the Radio Advertising Clearance Centre on the grounds that it was directed toward a political end. Media political advertising is not permitted in the UK. The ad, by Christian Community Partnership (CCP), asked people to identify if they had experienced discrimination in the workplace as a result of their faith. CCP publishes several magazines as well as owning Premier Christian Radio, the national broadcaster that was to carry the commercial.

The Obama administration announced a flurry of fixes to its troubled HealthCare.gov website on Friday that officials said would soon double its current capacity, a crucial step toward getting the system working by a November 30 deadline. It also pushed back a deadline for people to enroll in insurance plans for 2014 under President Barack Obama´s Affordable Care Act in a nod to millions of applicants who have been unable to sign up because of technical glitches for nearly two months. The healthcare reform, popularly known as Obamacare, aims to provide health benefits to millions of uninsured Americans. Obama´s biggest

Dan Bongino, who was a Secret Service agent under Presidents George W. On Tuesday, I mocked the Hurricane Katrina/Obamacare comparisons. Hurricane Katrina, after all, killed more than 1,800 people. Obamacare´s Web site isn´t working well yet. Ron Fournier, among others, defends the comparison, arguing that of course the crises themselves aren´t similar. The analogy is really about "the ways that Bush and Obama handled their crises, and [how] those actions changed the public´s view of their presidencies." But that´s precisely the point: The political fallout is driven by the nature of the crises. Or, to put it more starkly, reality drives politics — politics doesn´t drive reality. Start with the basic premise of

President Obama says not to worry about the Affordable Care Act´s botched rollout because the country will love it once the website is fixed and subsidies start rolling. But what if the troubles are only beginning because they´re built into the law? In the tradition of service journalism, we thought we´d offer a reader´s guide to the many potential ObamaCare traumas to come. Technology woes beyond Dec. 1. President Obama has promised for weeks that the 36 federal exchanges and the Healthcare.gov website will work for "the vast majority of users" by the end of November. But he´s refused to say

If voters had been aware last year that they might lose their health-care plans when Obamacare went into effect, Republican President Mitt Romney would be sitting in the White House today, according to a poll released Friday. A Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research survey conducted from Nov. 18-20 asked voters who supported President Barack Obama in 2012: “As you may know, millions of Americans have lost their insurance plans despite President Obama’s promise that, quote, ‘if you like your plan, you can keep it.’ If you knew in 2012 that this promise was not true, would you still have voted

A man still working, but wearied, and burdened — the emphysema that took his life also gave — in this case an oxygen gizmo that became a regular companion. This surely was not how he must have envisioned the Golden Years. (One’s greeting of “Hi Bill! Let me be the first to ask: Did the White House know that employment reports were being falsified? Last week I reported exclusively that someone at the Census Bureau’s Philadelphia region had been screwing around with employment data. And that person, after he was caught in 2010, claimed he was told to do so by a supervisor two levels up the chain of command. On top of that, a reliable source whom I haven’t identified said the falsification of employment data by Census was widespread and ongoing, especially around the time of the 2012 election. There’s now a congressional investigation

A Forum Research survey of 1,049 Toronto voters found that 42 per cent approved of the job Mr Ford has been doing as mayor of Canada´s largest city. Although it is a two point drop from two weeks ago, it is up from the 39 per cent approval rating he had before he admitted smoking crack cocaine. China has demarcated an "air-defence identification zone" over an area of the East China Sea, covering islands that are also claimed by Japan. China´s defence ministry said aircraft entering the zone must obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures". The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are a source of rising tension between the countries. Japan lodged a strong protest over what it said was an "escalation". "Setting up such airspace unilaterally escalates the situations surrounding Senkaku islands and has danger of leading to an unexpected situation," Japan´s foreign ministry said in a statement.

President Obama on Saturday again tried to turn attention away from his troubled health-care reform law and to other issues, while also placing the blame for Washington dysfunction and gridlock squarely on the shoulders of “a reckless few” — a clear shot at tea party Republicans in the House. Mr. Obama conceded, as he has done several times recently, that the Obamacare rollout has been “rough,” but he spent much of Saturday’s weekly address touting his administration’s record on other matters. “If you look beyond those headlines [related to Obamacare], there are some good things happening in our economy,” the

As we go to press, the Obama administration seems to be hurtling towards a bad deal with Iran. The administration will claim the agreement freezes and indeed sets back the Iranian nuclear program. But even the New York Times acknowledges that “only some elements are frozen, and rollbacks in the initial agreement are relatively minor” and can be easily reversed. Furthermore, the “deal” would mean the United States would retreat from its previous clear red line—one embodied in repeated U.N. Security Council resolutions—of requiring that Iran stop enrichment.

On November 22, 1963, two other notable men died, and got relegated to the foot of page 37 — the British authors C. S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley. Lewis endures because of the Narnia books (and films), but there’s a lot more in the back of his wardrobe. In his book The Abolition of Man, he writes of “men without chests” — the chest being “the indispensable liaison” between the head and the gut, between “cerebral man” and “visceral man.” In the chest beat what Lewis calls “the trained emotions.” Without them there is no honor or virtue, but only

Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans”- President John F. Kennedy. There is no family in American politics who is quite on par with the Kennedy’s. Fifty years after the assassination of JFK, the family’s presence in American politics has dwindled–they’ve experienced many ups and downs– but they’ve carried on. Each generation seems to pass on the proverbial torch, and America’s interest in the Kennedy clan, whether they’re running for office or battling public relations snafus, has continued with that passing.

People are puzzled: Why would Barack Obama have lied about how wonderfully everything was going to go with ObamaCare when officials in his administration knew perfectly well that disaster was going to strike? In one sense, the answer is simple: At the time, just before Oct. 1, Republicans were insisting ObamaCare be delayed or defunded. The president and his team weren’t going to give the enemy the satisfaction of agreeing — or the potent ammunition that would have come from a rueful admission the system wasn’t ready. Today, a bipartisan agreement to delay ObamaCare seems like it would have been a pretty
