The nonprofit hospital that treated the final victim of the Boston Marathon bombing attack will have its tax-exempt status reviewed under Obamacare and could face hefty fines and other penalties. Boston’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, which treated amputee Marc Fucarile as he recovered from the loss of his leg in the April 15 terrorist attack, is run by a nonprofit 501(c)3 hospital network that will be subject to new scrutiny of its tax-exempt status and potentially massive fines under Obamacare. A new provision in Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code, which takes effect under Obamacare, sets new standards of review and installs
Hey, this is one way for that loser to get his name back in the news. Huntsman ’16! TPM: The source of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) infamous claim during the 2012 presidential campaign that Mitt Romney had not paid any taxes in 10 years was Jon Huntsman Sr., the father of fellow GOP rival Jon Huntsman, according to a new book by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann called “Double Down…” “He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” Reid told the Huffington Post. “But obviously he can’t release
When SpongeBob SquarePants skips onto shelves in boxes of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese next year, he may be a little less, well, yellow than your kids are used to. Kraft has revamped its character-shaped product line for 2014, according to company spokeswoman Lynne Galia. The new versions will have six additional grams of whole grains, be lower in sodium and saturated fat, and will use spices instead of artificial food dyes to recreate the pasta´s famous yellow-orange color. "Parents have told us that they would like fun Mac & Cheese varieties with the same great taste, but with improved nutrition," Galia said
President Obama attended a Democratic fund raising event in Weston, Massachusetts Wednesday night at the home of Alan and Susan Solomont. Among the 60 attendees were a number of high-profile Democrats, according to the Boston Globe: Among those expected to attend are House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi; Governor Deval Patrick; Ken Burns, the director of acclaimed documentaries; Representative Steve Israel, who is chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee; Swanee Hunt, former US ambassador to Austria; and retired US Navy admiral James Stavridis. Peshawar, Pakistan - A U.S. drone strike killed the leader of the Pakistani Taliban Friday, U.S. and Pakistani officials said, in a report that if confirmed would be a major blow to the group that comes just a day after the government said it started peace talks with the militants. Hakimullah Mehsud, who is also believed to be behind a failed car bombing in New York´s Times Square in 2010 as well as brazen attacks inside Pakistan, was widely reported to have been killed in 2010, but later resurfaced. The tribal areas where the drone attacks occur are dangerous,
Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is leading by double digits in his 2014 race for reelection. A new poll released Thursday by Democratic polling firm PPP found Franken leads his potential GOP opponents by 10 to 13 percentage points. Five Republicans are seeking to challenge Franken: Chris Dahlberg, Mike McFadden, Jim Abeler, Julianne Ortman and Monti Moreno. McFadden, a finance executive, and Ortman, a state senator, are edging closer to Franken than they had been in May, the poll shows, when they trailed the senator by at least 15 percentage points. Franken was first elected to Congress in 2008, and now has a 51
United States Secretary of State John Kerry has acknowledged that some of the government´s surveillance activities reached too far. Answering questions about the surveillance controversy on Thursday from attendees of the Open Government Partnership conference, Kerry said that some of the actions occurred because the program was on autopilot, inferring that the Obama administration was unaware of what was going on.
BERLIN- A new law has gone into effect allowing German parents to register their newborn babies as neither male nor female if they were born with traits of both sexes. The German Parliament in January approved the law that went into effect Friday. The German Ethics Council, an advisory group, had urged the change to take the pressure off parents to make a hasty decision and possibly commit to surgery immediately after birth, the dpa news agency reported. The council had argued, among other things, that many people born with both sex characteristics who were operated on as children say
Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mt.) said Friday the penalty for the individual mandate should be delayed if the “Humpty Dumpty” ObamaCare website can’t be put back together again. “I think it makes better sense to see how much of this can be put together, how much Humpty Dumpty can be fixed in the next month,” Baucus said in an interview with Scott Fredericks of NewsTalk 730 KYYA. “And if it looks like Humpty Dumpty is not getting put back better together, then maybe we should start thinking about delaying the penalties. It´s not right to penalize people for mistakes the government´s made.” On
Insurers are canceling the medical policies of about 100,000 New Yorkers enrolled in individual health plans because of ObamaCare, state health officials said. But the figure is actually much higher because it doesn’t take into account hundreds of thousands covered under small business group policies that are being scrapped or rewritten to conform to the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. In New Jersey, the policies of 800,000 residents are affected by the insurance overhaul, officials in the Garden State said. “Approximately 100,000 individuals will be required to change insurance because current plans are not compliant with ACA [Affordable Care
Each weekday, commuter aircraft operated by the Illinois Department of Transportation fly two round-trips between Chicago’s Midway Airport and Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield. The “Executive Shuttle Service,” which has been around for nearly 30 years, is available free of charge to elected state officials and high-ranking state employees traveling on government business between the Illinois capital and the state’s largest city.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough tore into President Barack Obama and his administration on Friday for his effort to link the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act to his 2012 general election opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Scarborough said it was the height of hypocrisy for Obama to attempt to rehabilitate Romney’s health care record after his campaign essentially accused him of causing the death of a woman. The MSNBC hosts began by noting that Friday marked the first full month after the debut of the ACA’s insurance exchanges. They cited a CBS News report which revealed that the government
Since the government shutdown, you can´t swing a dead cat without hitting some media member claiming Republicans are in a lot of trouble heading into next year´s midterm elections. Breaking with the trend rather surprisingly Wednesday was the perilously liberal Mother Jones with a piece titled "New Poll Shows Democratic Incumbents in Big Trouble." The poll was actually from James Carville and Stan Greenberg´s Democracy Corps and was titled "The Revolt Against Washington and the Republican Congress." Despite Carville and Greenberg´s conclusions, author Kevin Drum dug deeper into the specifics to find some contrary nuggets: In Democratic districts, net incumbent approval has plummeted by
As the polls tighten in the Virginia gubernatorial race, Democrat Terry McAuliffe is dropping his front-runner swagger and warning that he could lose. In an email to supporters meant to inspire them to vote, he said simply: “Ignore the polls.” Some polls show that the race is getting close, with Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli getting to as close as three points in one poll, though most still show McAuliffe with a significant lead. But the former Democratic Party chairman is worried about turnout in a year when voters are turned off by both candidates and there is no other headline-grabbing election dragging
The GOP senator behind forging a deal to reopen the government last month said she agreed with the cause of stopping Obamacare but thought the tactics used were a “fantasy.” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said low approval ratings for the GOP in the wake of the shutdown are “certainly a clarion call for the Republicans, for my party, to do a lot of self-examination.” “I think it’s worth noting that the president’s approval ratings are down as well. The Democratic Party’s is down,” she told PBS. “But you’re certainly right that no one is lower than the Republicans right now.
President Obama just issued an executive order “to prepare the Nation for the impacts of climate change by undertaking actions to enhance climate preparedness and resilience.” “The impacts of climate change — including an increase in prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures, more heavy downpours, an increase in wildfires, more severe droughts, permafrost thawing, ocean acidification, and sea-level rise — are already affecting communities, natural resources, ecosystems, economies, and public health across the Nation. These impacts are often most significant for communities that already face economic or health-related challenges, and for species and habitats that are already facing other pressures.
Washington - White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Friday continued to defend the rule in the national health care law that may end up forcing millions of Americans from their health insurance. Carney´s defense of the law comes amid revelations that a grand total of six Americans signed up for Obamacare coverage on the first day the online exchanges went live October 1, according to internal notes provided to the Republican-controlled House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Despite those numbers, the White House remains confident that it will get the millions of new enrollees it needs on the exchanges to avoid
CBS News has caught the White House in an outright lie. It’s a lie that a number of administration officials stood behind and disseminated through the media to the public. Stated more clearly, the White House used many credulous members of the media to misinform the public. Now, after having been made fools of by their Democratic allies in the executive branch, one might be excused for expecting the press to push back against their abusers forcefully. Instead, the race is on to make excuses for the embattled White House. According to the results of an investigation by CBS News,
10:30 a.m.: EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT: Brian Adamick, 43, said he was getting ready to fly to Chicago for his brother’s wedding and was boarding a Spirit Airlines flight at Gate 32. He said people were running through the terminal, away from a security area. Adamick said he went through an emergency exit downstairs onto the tarmac with several other passengers. “While I was on the tarmac, I heard two gunshots from the same area where the people had been running and screaming,” he said. A few minutes after he got outside, he said buses showed up to help evacuate passengers.
Obama: “If you like your insurance plan, you can keep it.” Hillary: “We’ve seen rage and violence directed at American embassies over an awful internet video that we had NOTHING to do with…” The media has supported these liars. The truth apparently does not matter to the people at CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, PBS, NY Times, et al. They want their chosen leaders no matter the consequences.
The friendly fire directed at Sen. Ted Cruz from establishment Republicans is giving the Texan first-in-line status among Tea Party supporters and building a base for him to run for president, according to a new analysis from the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “To the establishment, Cruz is the embodiment of all the forces conspiring to threaten the GOP´s long-term viability. And, on a personal level, they also just can´t stand Cruz: He drives them crazy,” wrote Kyle Kondik in Center Director Larry Sabato´s popular Crystal Ball. But, added Kondik, the “venom” directed at Cruz, whose effort to defund Obamacare led
LOS ANGELES — A TSA employee has been shot at a checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport Terminal 3 in what police call a "multi-patient incident." The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted that "LAPD is now on TACTICAL ALERT due to a major incident." LAPD later scaled down the alert to to ":South and West Bureau only." The TSA agent was shot a checkpoint, KABC reports.
