JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In a national day of action, the group Enroll America held "Health Care from the Pulpit." Community organizers went to churches across the country, talking to members about the new health care law, with help from pastors. Pastor John Newman introduced two community organizers from Enroll America who talked about the act, everything from coverage, cost, to how to enroll. They also asked church members to fill out help cards with basic information for themselves or someone they knew. That´s exactly what Michelle Fletcher did. "I have a cousin that recently lost her job and she doesn´t have employment insurance
Enroll Alaska, an organization that was specifically created to aid Alaskans in enrolling for Obamacare, has thrown in the towel, at least for the time being. As the Peninsula Clarion reports, Enroll Alaska has been able to enroll a grand total of only three people since the launch of the health-insurance marketplaces on October 1. It has now given up entirely on that goal, at least until Healthcare.gov, the federal health-care exchange, gives Alaskans accurate figures on the subsidies they’re eligible for. According to Enroll Alaska, the exchange is telling people that they’re eligible for a subsidy $100 less than
DAMASCUS, Syria- Sami Amir is used to the deep echoing rumble of the Syrian army artillery pounding rebel positions on the outskirts of Damascus. It´s the thump of mortars launched from an Islamist-controlled neighborhood that scares him to death. The mortars have repeatedly hit in his mainly Christian district of Damascus, al-Qassaa, reportedly killing at least 32 people and injuring dozens of others the past two weeks. "You don´t know when and you don´t know where they hit," says Amir, a 55-year-old Christian merchant. "Life here is often too difficult." Rebel shelling into the capital has increasingly hit several majority-Christian
Nearly half of single, young adults eligible for ObamaCare´s new insurance exchanges can sign up for healthcare plans that cost $50 or less per month, federal health officials said Monday. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report showing that many young people have access to cheap coverage under the healthcare law because of low-cost plans, federal discounts to make policies more affordable and the Medicaid program. Overall, according to the report, about 1.3 million uninsured young adults qualify for bronze plans on the exchanges that will cost $50 or less per month after tax credits. A
Robert Siegel talks with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., about the roll out of the federal health law. Pelosi says she is assured the problems with HealthCare.gov will be fixed by the end of November and that no extension or delay of the program should be granted. She also talks about the way forward with the budget. Democrats are ready to negotiate, Pelosi insists, and says their goals are clear: Get rid of sequestration, promote growth, make cuts and bring in revenue.
For a smart man, President Obama professes to know very little about a great number of things going on in his administration. On Sunday night, the Wall Street Journal reported that he didn’t learn until this summer that the National Security Agency had been bugging the phones of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders for nearly five years. That followed by a few days a claim by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that Obama didn’t know about problems with the HealthCare.gov Web site before the rest of the world learned of them after the Oct. 1
Superpowerless: When your friends stop trusting you and your adversaries stop fearing you, decline — military and economic — is the inevitable result. Former Vice President Dick Cheney´s warning is no mere political barb. Appearing on ABC´s This Week Sunday program, this is how Dick Cheney summed up the massive damage that President Obama has caused to the U.S. role in the world: "Our friends no longer count on us, no longer trust us. And our adversaries don´t fear us." Cheney called that prestige "the cornerstone and the basis of the U.S. ability and influence." And he warned that under Obama, "a
President Obama’s famed social media operation today fell victim to hackers allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. For several hours, shortened hyperlinks appearing in Obama’s Twitter feed and on his Facebook page redirected users to a graphic YouTube video reportedly produced by the Syrian Electronic Army. The group claimed responsibility for the hack in an email to Mashable, saying it was “showing the truth about Syria.” “Thanks to our operation, Twitter now blocks Obama’s dangerous propaganda links,” the SEA wrote on its official Twitter account. A subsequent tweet included a screenshot of the apparent hack, showing how the group might
With ObamaCare´s health insurance exchanges unraveling — especially HealthCare.gov, the federally run portal for the 36 states that decided not to set up their own exchanges — it´s safe to say that the president´s effort to expand coverage isn´t going well. It´s about to get worse. Once the calendar flips to 2014, ObamaCare intends to expand Medicaid — the joint federal-state health insurance program for low-income Americans — to an additional 8.7 million people. But Medicaid isn´t working for the 62 million Americans it currently covers. Taxpayers are struggling to shoulder the program´s $400-billion-plus price tag. Beneficiaries, meanwhile, are finding that doctors won´t
Is there a method to President Obama´s style of leadership, his methods of decision-making, his habits of attention, oversight and follow-through? In recent months I´ve been keeping a file of stories that might suggest an answer. See what you think. *** "President Barack Obama went nearly five years without knowing his own spies were bugging the phones of world leaders. Officials said the NSA has so many eavesdropping operations under way that it wouldn´t have been practical to brief him on all of them. "They added that the president was briefed on and approved of broader intelligence-collection ´priorities,´ but that
Health Fail: Healthcare.gov´s implosion may be due to one of its major developers being selected less for its technical competence than for cronyism. Perhaps the White House was hoping for a friends and family discount. Why pick a Canadian firm with a French name to help develop the official ObamaCare website? It certainly wasn´t based on the track record in developing health care software of CGI Federal, the IT contractor that orchestrated most of the Healthcare.gov website. CGI Federal is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canada´s CGI Group (CGI stands for "Conseillers en Gestion et Informatique" in French, which roughly translates to
A meeting planned for Tuesday between President Obama and a House Republican supporter of immigration reform, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), has been canceled due to "scheduling conflicts," according to a source familiar with the plans. There was no word late Monday on whether the meeting would be rescheduled. Diaz-Balart had been scheduled to meet with the president at the White House to discuss immigration reform. He is a key House Republican on the issue, and earlier this year had been working with lawmakers from both parties on a comprehensive House bill. The bipartisan group has disbanded, but Diaz-Balart has continued
The ABC7 I-Team has learned of an unusual move by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in a Chicago terrorism case. The Attorney General is pressing to keep evidence gathered against a suburban teenager secret, claiming that to release it would do "grave damage" to national security. In one corner we have U.S. officials trying to dodge the diplomatic blowback from spying on foreign leaders. In another corner, we have U.S. intelligence spying on a Chicago teenager, American Adel Daoud, who was later arrested and charged in a terrorism case here. And Monday night, against the backdrop of spies, leaks and
Scandal: In recent days, President Obama has claimed ignorance about spying on allies and the ObamaCare meltdown. How can it be this president is always the last to know whenever anything goes wrong in his administration? Even though the NSA tapped the phones of German Chancellor Angela Merkel some time ago, President Obama claims he didn´t know anything about it until after an internal review he ordered earlier this year. Why should he? After all, "the president doesn´t sign off on this stuff," one official said. If Obama´s ignorance of this seems dubious, consider that a German weekly reports that Army Gen. Keith
Oklahoma City - The Affordable Care website has had its share of problems. But if you get a phone call from someone offering to help you get insurance, don´t fall for it. That´s one of a number of scams popping up around Obamacare. (Snip) "It really started at the beginning of October," said Kitt Letcher, President and CEO of the Oklahoma City Better Business Bureau. Letcher says scams like this usually come out when there is a lot of confusion like there is right now about the Affordable Care Act. She says the targets are usually those on Medicare, disability
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney faltered to respond to reporters about Obamacare costs Monday. Ed Henry of Fox News disclosed the case of a 56-year-old Florida woman whose health care costs will increase at least ten times under Obamacare. "Individual cases I cannot address," Carney responded.
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration says it´s granting a six-week extension until March 31 for Americans to sign up for coverage next year and avoid new tax penalties under the president´s health care overhaul law. Monday´s move had been expected since White House spokesman Jay Carney promised quick action last week to resolve a "disconnect" in the implementation of the law. Technical problems continue to trouble the website that´s supposed to be the main enrollment vehicle for people who don´t get health care at work. Under the new policy, people who sign up by the end of open enrollment season won´t face
On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the worst storm to hit New Jersey, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said today the state is poised to receive nearly $1.5 billion in additional Hurricane Sandy relief aid. The funding, announced at the Little Ferry First Aid Squad, is the second round of money from HUD’s Community Development Block Grant program, which sent $1.8 million to New Jersey this spring. “These funds have been absolutely critical to help families get back on their feet. More than 20,000 homeowners across the state have already benefited from these funds,”
Hillary Clinton headlined a high-profile Chicago fund-raiser Monday, but her appearance may have been too much for one guest to digest. Emergency medical services were called to the $5,000-a-plate fund-raiser after a guest began choking, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The guest had to be rushed out on a stretcher by paramedics, but was seen by reporters, sitting up and looking alert. No further information on the person’s condition was immediately available. The fund-raiser, held at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel, was thrown on behalf of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago. The former First Lady and secretary of state is rumored to be considering
The White House acknowledged for the first time Monday that President Obama’s oft-repeated promise that everyone can keep their health-insurance plans under Obamcare just isn’t true. For more than three years as he worked to pass the Affordable Care Act and encouraged people to enroll, Mr. Obama routinely pledged that people could keep their doctor and their plan if they liked them. “If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period,” Mr. Obama said in June 2009. Later that year he proclaimed, “Nothing in our plan requires you to change what
I´ve always thought of Barack Obama as the "Chauncey Gardiner" of American politics. Like Peter Sellers´ character in the classic film, "Being There," Obama is an embodiment of outsiders´ hopes and dreams for who they think he is. Reality, like the film, shows there isn´t really a lot of there, there. This weekend, we learned that President Obama "didn´t know about" NSA spying on world leaders, especially German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He also "didn´t know about" the posthumously obvious problems with the rollout of the ObamaCare website exchanges. According to the New York Times, these problems were evident eight months ago.
President Obama repeatedly assured Americans that after the Affordable Care Act became law, people who liked their health insurance would be able to keep it. But millions of Americans are getting or are about to get cancellation letters for their health insurance under Obamacare, say experts, and the Obama administration has known that for at least three years. Four sources deeply involved in the Affordable Care Act tell NBC News that 50 to 75 percent of the 14 million consumers who buy their insurance individually can expect to receive a “cancellation” letter or the equivalent over the next year

Appearing by phone on Steve Malzberg‘s NewsMaxTV show Monday afternoon, Charles Krauthammer responded to Rush Limbaugh‘s criticism that the Washington Post columnist was “fooled” into believing President Obama was a “centrist” at the beginning of his first term in office. On his radio show, Limbaugh ran clips of Krauthammer and fellow columnist George Will telling Fox News that they initially thought Obama painted himself as a compromising centrist. “I intellectually don’t know how you can not figure out Barack Obama,” the radio host said. “A liberal is a liberal. I know Obama, for the low-information crowd, could be whatever you wanted

Sebelius? Being untruthful about Obamacare? Perish the thought. Alas: Misstating the health care law she is responsible for administering, Kathleen Sebelius has asserted that the law required health insurance sign-ups to start Oct. 1, whether the system was ready or not. In fact, the decision when to launch the sign-up website was hers. The troubled debut of the government´s health insurance enrollment website has raised questions about whether its start date should have been delayed to allow testing and repairs before it went live. Asked last week whether that might have been the wiser course, Sebelius, the health and human
