First, she had to put iron bars on her windows. Then, she had two types of alarm systems installed. But despite all the precautions, Renee Gilmore was still scared to enter her east-side Detroit house when she came back from work every evening. “I could hardly come home without looking at the house first, just to make sure,” said Gilmore, 41. They’d broken in three times so far, tried four other times. Now she had to make sure they weren’t still inside. Her neighborhood, known as Jefferson-Chalmers for the intersection that fronts it, is one of the city’s better

GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA — Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S., is using a bizarre concoction of spices and juice to dye his beard a bright color. Mohammed, who faces a military tribunal on war crime charges, has started using "common kitchen items" like cumin, turmeric and other spices to change the color of his long beard, Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale told the Washington Examiner. It was previously reported that Mohammed used breakfast items such as fruit juices and berries to dye his facial hair. Mohammed appeared Tuesday for the

Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev did participate in a brutal triple murder 18 months before the deadly marathon attack according to newly-filed court records today. The startling disclosure was made by federal prosecutors who are trying to prevent his younger brother´s legal team from obtaining documents concerning the killing of three men in Waltham, Massachusetts on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. It is the first official statement that links the now-dead elder Tsarnaev to the unsolved crime and raises questions about the death in May of his friend Ibragim Todashev, who allegedly confessed his and Tsarnaev´s involvement to FBI agents before he

President Barack Obama didn´t know of problems with the Affordable Care Act´s website -- despite insurance companies´ complaints and the site´s crashing during a test run -- until after its now well-documented abysmal launch, the nation´s health chief told CNN on Tuesday. In an exclusive interview with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, CNN´s Dr. Sanjay Gupta asked when the President first learned about the considerable issues with the Obamacare website. Sebelius responded that it was in "the first couple of days" after the site went live October 1. "But not before that?" Gupta followed up. To which Sebelius replied,

Fox News’s Sean Hannity, that paragon of journalistic integrity, hosted six “average Americans” on his show this month who were “feeling the pain” of Obamacare. One was Paul Cox, who runs a North Carolina construction business and complained that the new law prevented him from hiring full-time employees because he would have to provide health insurance to anybody working more than 30 hours a week. “We’ve had to keep them below 30 hours or we wouldn’t be able to .?.?. stay in business and pay it,” Cox said. “It’s happening all the time,” Hannity contributed. The frustration out there is very, very high. And so when I see people talking about the tea party, I don´t think of the tea party as extremists the way some

Health co-ops, created to foster

When the new health-care law was being cobbled together, Congress decided to establish a network of nonprofit insurance companies aimed at bringing competition to the marketplace, long dominated by major insurers. But these co-ops, started as a great hope for lowering insurance costs, are already in danger. While the debut of the Affordable Care Act this month has been marred by widespread computer problems, the difficulties facing the co-ops have been less obvious to consumers. One co-op, however, has closed, another is struggling and at least nine more have been projected to have financial problems, according to internal government reviews

The Transportation Security Administration is expanding its screening of passengers before they arrive at the airport by searching a wide array of government and private databases that can include records like car registrations and employment information. While the agency says that the goal is to streamline the security procedures for millions of passengers who pose no risk, the new measures give the government greater authority to use travelers´ data for domestic airport screenings. Previously that level of scrutiny applied only to individuals entering the United States. The prescreening, some of which is already taking place, is described in documents the

WASHINGTON- Twice this year alone, Air Force officers entrusted with the launch keys to nuclear-tipped missiles have been caught leaving open a blast door that is intended to help prevent a terrorist or other intruder from entering their underground command post, Air Force officials have told The Associated Press. The blast doors are never to be left open if one of the crew members inside is asleep - as was the case in both these instances - out of concern for the damage an intruder could cause, including the compromising of secret launch codes. Kaiser Health News reported that many canceled plans from Florida Blue, and other insurers across the country, fall short of the requirements laid out in the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as ObamaCare. An Iraq War veteran´s towering SpongeBob SquarePants headstone has been removed from her final resting place because officials at the historic Cincinnati cemetery deemed it inappropriate for their traditional grounds. The headstone of Kimberly Walker, 28, was made in the likeness of her favorite cartoon character and erected at Spring Grove Cemetery on Oct. 10, almost eight months after she was found slain in a Colorado hotel room. Despite getting the cemetery´s prior approval of the headstone´s design — a smiling SpongeBob in an Army uniform, with Walker´s name and rank — her family said Monday that cemetery staff called them the

About President Obama’s remarks on Monday in the Rose Garden on the matter of the problems plaguing the Affordable Care Act and, specifically, healthcare.gov, it seemed to me that they served a valuable purpose, at least to this extent: They distilled the Obama presidency to some of its core qualities: (a) detachment from reality; (b) misleading in its claims; (c) deeply polarizing and partisan; and (d) filled with lame excuses. But there was another noteworthy element to what the president said. I have in mind the pitiable quality of his remarks. Speaking about the Affordable Care Act, Mr. Obama kept

Three years after the disastrous launch of the Affordable Care Act, most of the website troubles finally have been ironed out. People are now able to log on to the government´s ACA website and to most of the state health-insurance exchanges. The public has grudgingly come to accept higher insurance premiums, new taxes and increases in part-time workers who were formerly full-time. But Americans are irate anyway—because now they´re seeing the health-care law´s destructive effect on the fundamental nature of the way their care is delivered. Even before the ACA´s launch in 2013, many physicians—seeing the changes in their profession that

Jobs: Here we go again, another employment report showing "unexpectedly weak" job growth. Pretty soon Americans are going to figure out, as computer geeks like to say, "It´s not a bug — it´s a feature." Across Wall Street, the consensus was 180,000 net new payroll jobs in September. But some investment houses had quietly raised the bar to 200,000, believing the economy had "firmed up" in recent months. But just like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, only to have Lucy pull it away at the last second, our nation´s pre-eminent economic thinkers keep having their predictions dashed on the rocks

Health Care: Canada´s Supreme Court has ruled that under the "law of the land" in Ontario, a government board, not the family or doctors, has the ultimate power to pull the plug on a patient. Lost in the discussion of defunding ObamaCare and the failed effort in Congress is the fact that failure means the government´s ability to defund your life through the ObamaCare´s Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) remains. IPAB is regarded by many, starting with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, as a death panel whose decisions based on cost effectiveness would result in health care rationing. A glimpse of this

She has to decide whether to admit that she willfully misled Congress for months or was completely out of touch. Back in May, amid a flurry of news reports about problems with the ObamaCare exchanges and talk of a "train wreck," Sebelius´ agency spun a story in USA Today about how all was well. According to USA Today, HHS officials said it had "met its deadlines (and) tested its system." What´s more, they said exchanges "can support expected large volumes of traffic." It was all completely bogus. In fact,
