Is this the Change we were waiting for? Really? Even if you voted the other way in 2008, most of the country felt an energy early in 2009, fresh blood in the White House, a clean slate built on a historic choice who promised so much. Even skeptics were hopeful. No more. Just look, if you haven´t just eaten, at the sad spectacle unfolding in Washington these days on both sides — starting at the top. As the world´s second oldest profession, politics has never been pretty. We ask these chosen men and women to set the collective public priorities and work
The world´s population will rise to 9.7 billion in 2050 from the current level of 7.1 billion and India will overtake China as the world´s most populous nation, a French study said Wednesday. A bi-annual report by the French Institute of Demographic Studies (Ined) projected there would be 10 to 11 billion people on the planet by the end of the century. The projections ran parallel to forecasts by the United Nations, the World Bank and other prominent national institutes. A UN study in June said the global population would swell to 9.6 billion in 2050 and the number of
When medical research is published in a peer-reviewed journal, the presumption is that the study has been reviewed for accuracy. The advent of open-access journals has made it easier to get published. But when a journalist sent an obviously faked paper, dozens of open-access journals said they´d be happy to publish it, for a fee. That´s the conclusion of an elaborate sting carried out by Science, a leading mainline journal. The result should trouble doctors, patients, policymakers and anyone who has a stake in the integrity of science (and who doesn´t?).
Tests showed that exhaust degraded some floral scent chemicals the bees "home in on" when they are foraging. The study, published in Scientific Reports, also revealed that a specific group of chemicals found in diesel exhaust, known as NOx, diminished the insects´ response to floral scents. They say the results are evidence that air quality should be improved.
Nosy Be (Madagascar) - A mob in Madagascar lynched two Europeans and a local man Thursday suspecting them of murdering a young boy for his organs, the authorities and witnesses said. Residents on the tourist island of Nosy Be island went on a day-long rampage after a missing eight-year-old was reportedly found dead. "Rioters launched a manhunt and killed the Europeans," in the early hours of the morning, gendarmerie commander Guy Bobin Randriamaro told AFP. Hours later in a near-by suburb, a Malagasy was also killed, as mobs of hundreds of men roamed the streets and setting fires. According to
ROME – A boat carrying nearly 500 Eritrean and Somali migrants capsized early Thursday off the coast of the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, leaving more than 100 fatalities and 200 missing. Accounts from survivors indicate the migrants fell into the sea when the boat, which departed from Libya’s coast, caught fire and capsized. Some of the victims were trapped under the vessel. Some have suggested the blaze may have been caused by a short-circuit, while others say the immigrants decided to set off a flare to attract passing ships. Footage broadcast on Italian television showed dramatic scenes of body bags piled
Grocery stores on Army bases in the U.S. are closed. The golf course at Andrews Air Force base is open. All 128 employees of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. are working, while 3,000 safety inspectors employed by the Federal Aviation Administration are off the job. The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing new pharmaceuticals. The National Institutes of Health is turning away new patients for clinical trials. The seeming randomness of the U.S. government’s first shutdown in 17 years can be explained in part by anomalies in the spending Congress does and doesn’t control. Activities funded by fees from
“The world can decide in a fit of madness to kill itself,” announced Bob Geldof at the launch of the One Young World summit in Johannesburg. “Sometimes progress may not be possible. “We´re in a very fraught time,” he added. “There will be a mass extinction event. That could happen on your watch. “The signs are that it will happen and soon.” Sir Bob, wearing his trademark sunglasses, addressed 8,000 One Young World delegates from 190 nations across the world in Soccer City, Johannesburg last night. He is a counsellor for the organisation, which hopes to inspire and create the
Fairfield — Explosive devices, more than 250 guns and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition were found at a Bronson Road house, and authorities closed off the street through Wednesday. The explosive devices have been removed and detonated, and no one was injured, but potentially dangerous substances remain in the house and must be removed by professionals, police and fire officials said at a press conference Wednesday morning. (Snip) Police inventoried and seized 274 firearms from the home on Wednesday, said Deputy Chief of police Chris Lyddy. A man in his 60s lives at the house,
A woman has been shot dead today after she rammed her car into a White House barricade with a young child inside then led police on a chase toward the Capitol, witnesses said. Up to 15 shots were fired at 2pm (ET) on Thursday with officers swarming the scene with machine guns while hundreds of staffers and tourists fled in terror or took shelter in buildings at the political heart of Washington D.C. The female suspect was shot dead by police officers but is not believed to have returned fire. She is reportedly a 34-year-old dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut.
You can’t meet brazen liars with reasonable argument. Nor can you assume the public is getting the House Republican message when American journalists are mainly worshipers of Obama Nike, or more properly of their serene highnesses Obama and Omama (“Omybama, please grant me…”). If you’ve seen Mr Smith Goes to Washington, you recall that Jimmy Stewart filibusters his heart out on the Senate floor as a monstrous political machine suppresses all reports of what he is doing—like crushing eggshells–and the public turns against the lonely senator. For Jimmy Stewart, read House Republicans. Congressional Republicans ought to memorize, and
RUSH: This is really outrageous on so many levels, buts let´s take it at a base level. The thrust of the story is that there are a lot of poor blacks and single mothers in the South who are black, two-thirds of ´em aren´t gonna have any health care or insurance and it´s because of Republicans. Yes, Republican governors, yes, you see the Republican governors are denying two-thirds of their poor black and single-mother populations health care. That´s what the New York Times says. Here is the lead sentence, and it prompts an obvious question. Here´s the lead sentence. "A sweeping
NEW YORK — The driver of an SUV involved in a bloody weekend confrontation with a throng of motorcyclists was put in grave danger and feared for the life of his family when he drove through the crowd, striking a biker on the street, his wife said Thursday.(Snip) Mieses was recently arrested in Andover, Mass., for driving with a revoked license. According to police and records with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, Mieses hasn’t had a valid license or permit to drive in the state since 1999. He also never applied for a motorcycle license. The records show that in
RUSH: James Taranto, the Wall Street Journal, has a story of a guy named Brendan Mahoney, who did succeed. It´s a Hartford Courant story, and this guy´s being joked about as the man who saved Obamacare. The subhead is: "Great news! They got a 30-year-old dude to sign up!" And here are the details. "Meet Brendan Mahoney, the young man who is saving ObamaCare. He´s 30 years old, a third-year law student at the University of Connecticut. He´s actually been insured for the past three years -- in 2011 and 2012 through a $2,400-a-year school-sponsored health plan." So he´s already
Here’s what Harry Reid said yesterday in answer to a question from CNN’s Dana Bash: What right did [the House of Representatives] have to pick and choose what part of government is going to be funded? It’s obvious what’s going on here. You talk about reckless and irresponsible. Wow. What this is all about is Obamacare. They are obsessed. I don’t know what other word I can use. They’re obsessed with this Obamacare thing. It’s working now and it will continue to work and people will love it more than they do now by far. So they have no right
RUSH: Harry Reid. Let´s move on to sound bites five, six, and seven. This is yesterday, Dana Bash, Q&A with Dingy Harry. BASH: If you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn´t you do it? REID: Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own. This is... To have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing maybe means -- BASH: I´m just asking a question. REID: -- you’re irresponsible and reckless. RUSH: Can you hear it? She is so embarrassed. Her idol,
One reason this column was wary of congressional Republicans´ government-shutdown strategy against ObamaCare is that it seemed unlikely to succeed. ObamaCare is unpopular, but so are government shutdowns, and both the president (for structural reasons) and the Democrats (for ideological ones) would appear to have a natural advantage in such a confrontation. Hence the Democrats´ "victory" in the last two shutdowns, in 1995 and 1996. It may still turn out that way, but we´ve been surprised this week at the Democrats´ tactical maladroitness. As Josh Jordan quipped yesterday on Twitter: "Since the shutdown began, Obama and [Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has begun to recall workers currently furloughed because of the government shutdown to help prepare for Tropical Storm Karen, the White House announced today. “Based on applicable legal requirements and consistent with its contingency plan, FEMA has begun to recall currently furloughed employees necessary to serve functions of the agency to protect life and property as they prepare for potential landfall for Tropical Storm Karen,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced at his daily briefing. It’s unclear how many FEMA employees are being called into work. Most FEMA employees — 11,468 of the 14,729
Via Charles Cooke. Imagine it. Imagine a movement so selfish that it would sabotage the operations of a venture on which vast numbers of people depend simply to gain leverage for its own agenda. Then imagine that that movement grew in numbers to the point where it could elect its own bought-and-paid-for politicians to do its bidding. Who knows how much havoc it could wreak? When you think about it, Democrats are right: It really is a sort of terrorism. Am I awake? [snip video]
RUSH: I can´t tell you why, I mean, this is a gut feel. Of course it could be wrong. I actually think that the Democrats are showing signs of losing it in this shutdown. I really do. I think they´re in uncharted water. It´s what I was talking about yesterday. When you know you have the media on your side, you just are confident you´re gonna get your way, and they have been with the Republicans ever since basically the 2008 election, the 2012 election, throw 2010 out, they basically have been able to intimidate the Republicans into falling in
Not 90 minutes after CNN first reported that Capitol Hill was on lockdown on Thursday, anchor Wolf Blitzer brought politics into the breaking news coverage. "An incident like this which clearly scares everyone up on Capitol Hill, staffers, workers, members of Congress. You think it´s going to propel you guys up there, Democrats and Republicans, to say you know what, enough is enough, let´s get back to work and end this government shutdown?" Blitzer asked Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.). [Video below the break. Audio here.] CNN´s chyron even read "Shots Fired on Capitol Hill," yet Blitzer was asking about politics.
Say hello to Obamacare phones. In Tennessee, those shopping on the new health insurance co-ops could end up with more than just some health insurance. They might even walk away with a free smartphone. The Nashville Business Journal is reporting that Community Health Alliance, Tennessee’s Obamacare health insurance co-op, is using the prospect of a free phone to encourage folks to enroll: Community Health Alliance, Tennessee’s health insurance co-op, is running a unique promotional program to drive enrollment in its plans for sale on the exchange: health insurance in exchange for a smartphone. As part of its Community Health Connection
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker isn’t a fan of the government shutdown, and has taken more of the “pox on both houses” approach to criticism of it. However, he’s really not a fan of the Washington Monument strategy — and when the National Parks Service tried to get Wisconsin to shut down shared areas, Walker’s administration told them to pound sand: The state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday refused a directive from the National Park Service to close a host of popular state properties because of the federal government shutdown. The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of
California’s Obamacare network failed to register even one person for insurance on when the exchanges opened on Tuesday, according to a local TV station. Covered California initially claimed 5 million visitors on the first day, but that turned out to be a web-page count of clicks by 500,000 visitors. “There was about half a million people that visited the website,” said Lizelda Lopez, a spokeswoman for Covered California. But off that 500,000 visitors, only about 7,100 people submitted applications, said the KUSI-CA anchor. “Nobody is actually enrolled yet, because the people behind the scenes are not trained,” he said. California is expected to provide a
Guess who is the world’s largest producer of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels (oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids)? For years it has been Russia, which is deeply dependent on the production and export of such products (taxes and tariffs on them provide 40 percent of the government’s budget). But this year, probably already, Russia will be overtaken by the United States, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. U.S. oil production increased by more than a million barrels a day last year, the largest annual increase since oil production began in 1859. Russian oil production has been
Louisiana’s top health-insurance provider said that not a single person enrolled in a new health-care plan offered through the Affordable Care Act on its first day. An executive with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana told the Times-Picayune that the agency was unable to sell the plan because customers were unable to access the HealthCare.gov website due to its website’s sluggishness. “It was not as intense as we had anticipated,” the company’s vice president of communication said of the company’s sales. He urged supporters and critics, however, to “take a deep breath and relax” and assured them that the website would
