During the second portion of a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing about Benghazi Thursday on Capitol Hill, the majority of Democrats on the Committee left the room and refused to listen to the testimony of Patricia Smith and Charles Woods. Ms. Smith is the mother of Sean Smith, an information management officer killed in the 9/11 Benghazi attack. Charles Woods is the father of Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, who was also killed. The far side of the room, shown empty in the photo, belongs to the Democrats. The only Democrats who stayed were Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and Rep.
A Birmingham woman is telling of an unsettling encounter at a Norfolk, Va., airport with Aaron Alexis, the man accused of killing 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard this week. Glynda Boyd told ABC News Thursday that she and her family were traveling home to Birmingham from a family reunion in Virginia on Aug. 4, when a man confronted them as her wheelchair-bound aunt laughed loudly at a joke with her family.
WOODSTOCK, N.Y. — The Town Board has been asked to set aside a 5 to 8 acres on which homeless people could set up tents without being considered trespassers. The request was made during a meeting Tuesday by Kenneth Churchill, who said homeless people should not have to be subject to harsh weather without an opportunity to put up their own shelters. “Being forced to live without shelter causes the natural consequence of unnatural death,” Churchill said. “Therefore, any shelter erected upon the land would be considered lawful, such as tents (and) tin roofs in order to survive the elements.
Democrats used the 2012 election to fine-tune a strategy for beating conservatives in conservative-friendly states. A handful of GOP players are now using Virginia´s off-year gubernatorial race to trial-run a strategy for defeating that Democratic tactic. Virginia so far has been a carbon copy of what Democrats did so successfully in last year´s Senate and House races. The approach runs thus: A Democratic candidate, assisted by unions and outside partisan groups, floods the zone with attack ads, painting the GOP opponent as a tea-party nut who is too "extreme" for the state. The left focuses on divisive wedge issues—like abortion—that resonate
Leadership: With one of the greatest-ever congressional leaders finally exonerated of all criminal charges, it´s worth asking: Where would Washington and the nation be if Tom DeLay had been speaker all these years? The late Robert Novak, who covered Washington for over a half century, called former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay "the most effective legislator of his time," who must be "ranked with the great legislative leaders of all time, such as Thomas Brackett Reed, Robert A. Taft and Lyndon B. Johnson." Reacting to his resignation from Congress in 2006, Novak wrote: "Nobody has been as effective in enacting the conservative
Several weeks before Aaron Alexis opened fire inside of the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, he was kicked out of a military housing complex in Virginia after complaining of too much noise coming from the linen closet, ABC News has learned. (Snip)n the early days of August, Alexis was living at the Naval Bachelor Enlisted Quarters in Norfolk, Va., but he complained of hearing noise coming from the linen closet there and was ultimately forced to leave, two sources with knowledge of the investigation told ABC News. It was unclear whether there was any follow-up from the Navy, according to
Health Care Economy: The Affordable Care Act that takes effect in 13 days will add $621 billion to the nation´s health care bill over the next decade. That´s the good news. The bad news is that costs are likely to be even higher. According to a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services report, released on Wednesday, health spending next year will shoot up 6.1% as ObamaCare takes effect, and increases will average 6.2% in the years after that. In 2014 alone, ObamaCare will add more than $47 billion to the nation´s health care tab. This growth rate is significantly higher
Budget: President Obama suggests raising the debt ceiling won´t add a penny to a U.S. debt already spiraling out of control. What planet does he live on? In a speech to the Business Roundtable this week covered by CNSnews.com, Obama added this gem to the budget debate: "Raising the debt ceiling, which has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt; it does not somehow promote profligacy." What? This kind of gibberish is a big reason voters have so little faith in their public officials these days. Suffice it to say that if the debt ceiling has been raised "over
ATLANTA -- Tiger Woods was near the bottom of the Tour Championship leaderboard after failing to birdie any hole at East Lake on Thursday. It was just the seventh time in Woods´ pro career on the PGA Tour that he was unable to birdie at least one hole during a round, the last coming during the first round of the 2010 U.S. Open. Two of the previous six were also at East Lake, but they came in 1998. The top-ranked Woods turned pro in 1996, and Thursday was his 1,083rd round on the PGA Tour since. His 3-over 73 left him
White House press secretary Jay Carney on Thursday said Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, had "Putin envy" after his office released a video accusing President Obama of being more willing to negotiate with the Russian leader than with the GOP on budget issues. "The video, I thought, demonstrated a little bit of Putin envy," Carney told reporters during his daily briefing. House Republicans are calling for spending cuts in exchange for raising the nation´s debt limit. The federal government will reach its borrowing capacity in mid-October. The White House on Thursday reiterated that Obama would not negotiate over an increase in the debt ceiling,
Gold bugs were called back into action Thursday as the market digests the fact the Federal Reserve didn´t scale back quantitative easing as widely expected. The price of gold futures for December trading on New York´s Comex rose 4.6% to $1,367.70 on Thursday, the metal´s biggest gain since 2009, says Bloomberg News. Gold for immediate delivery trading in London added 0.3% to $1,368.01, after jumping 4.1% on Wednesday, the biggest one-day leap since June 1, 2012.
The House approved a Republican plan Thursday to cut food stamps by $39 billion during the next decade, setting up a showdown with Democrats over the program used by nearly 48 million low-income Americans. The House voted 217-210 for the bill that cuts nearly twice as much from food stamps as a bill the House rejected in June. It is also far more than a Senate measure passed earlier this year that would trim about $4.5 billion in spending. The bill failed to draw the support of a single Democrat, many of whom have said the steep cuts would erode a
RUSH: This next story has a one-word reaction, one word analysis, and that is: dictatorship. "The Labor Department announced Wednesday that federal laws governing private employee pension and related benefit plans will be interpreted to recognize all legal marriages of same-sex couples, regardless of where the couple is living currently." This means that the Obama administration is now going to recognize all same-sex married couples, regardless of state law. They´re gonna do this under the private pension plan law. "The decision to utilize a ´place of celebration´ rule," that´s what it´s called, "rather than a ´place of domicile´ rule follows the lead
Now that House Republicans are poised to pass a continuing resolution that defunds Obamacare — just as Senate conservatives have been asking for weeks — everyone’s on the same page, right? Wrong. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), who has arguably led the charge to defund Obamacare in the upper chamber, responded to the news in a way that didn’t sit too well with House Republicans. The Post’s Paul Kane and Ed O’Keefe report: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), the loudest champion in the Senate of the new Boehner strategy, acknowledged that he would probably be helpless to stop the funding bill in his chamber.
Home Depot Inc. (HD), the world’s largest home improvement retailer, plans to end medical coverage for about 20,000 part-time employees and direct them to government-sponsored exchanges scheduled to open next month as companies revamp benefits to fit the U.S. Affordable Care Act. (Snip) United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS), Trader Joe’s Co. and other employers have been cutting benefits ahead of next month’s roll-out of government exchanges that were designed to give uninsured Americans a chance to buy taxpayer-subsidized medical coverage. While the corporate scale-back could benefit low-wage employees who may find better options through Obamacare, it’s not what the law
"Some activists decided to protest this US practice but it seems that they picked the wrong target," a specialized blog of the Brazilian news portal Uol said. "They hacked Nasa´s web page and left the message: Stop spying on us," it said. The hackers´ message also called on the United States not to attack Syria. A Nasa spokesman confirmed that a Brazilian hacker group last week posted a political message on a number of Nasa websites. "At no point were any of the agency´s primary websites, missions or classified systems compromised," said Nasa spokesman Allard Beutel.
The Constitution guarantees the right to free speech, but don’t try to pass out copies of it at Modesto Junior College in California. A student at the school who tried to pass out pocket-size pamphlets of the very document that memorializes our rights got shut down on Sept. 17 – a date also known as Constitution Day. Campus authorities told Robert Van Tuinen, who caught the whole thing on videotape, he could only pass out the free documents at a tiny designated spot on campus, and only then if he scheduled it several days in advance.
RUSH: Now, this is the UK Daily Mail. Gennifer Flowers is back in the news, and it´s in the foreign press. Of course, what media´s foreign? With the Internet the way it is, the UK Daily Mail is accessible by everybody, but we don´t know how widely it is. But still, this is foreign media. Here´s how it starts. "Their 12-year affair made Gennifer Flowers one of the most high profile mistresses in America. Now, two decades after they split amid scandal, the former news reporter from Little Rock, Arkansas wants to ´sit down and talk´ with Bill Clinton. In
Testifying Thursday in front of the House Oversight Committee, Ambassador and former Chairman of the Benghazi Accountability Review Board [ARB] Thomas Pickering said he was proud of report produced by the ARB that has been described as a "whitewash." "I am aware that no report will ever be perfect. But I am proud of this one which has always been seen by many as clear, cogent and very hard hitting - as it should be," Pickering said. "I feel that this report is still on the mark, free of cover up and political tilt, and will personally welcome anything new which
Fox News anchor Bret Baier is to take a short break from TV as his six-year-old son undergoes heart surgery. It is the third time Baier´s son Paul has had major surgery after being born with five congenital heart defects. While Paul recovers from the latest surgery, which was expected to take more than five hours on Thursday, Baier has taken time off work to be by his bedside. Baier updated viewers about his son´s impending surgery via his blog and Twitter, where he praised his son´s spirit, saying: ´You´d never know he´s been through what he´s been through.´
RUSH: This priming of the pump that Bernanke continues to do. There are a number of things that puzzle me by it, but the first thing is, Bernanke and the Fed. The report that they gave yesterday before announcing that they´re gonna continue all of this printing of money, was that the economy is unstable, that the economy is actually weak. Yet everywhere I look in the media, I keep hearing about a roaring recovery. I keep hearing about, "Why aren´t there any new jobs, because, look! The economy´s coming back, and profits are soaring." We just had that story in
The community of Russian experts responded negatively to Republican Senator John McCain´s article Russians deserve better than Putin. And that´s not because of the criticism that McCain used against the Russian President, because on this point everything was predictable: the senator is loyal to himself. But the American politician just couldn´t say anything essential in the response to the arguments of Vladimir Putin published in The New York Times. Instead, McCain once again attacked the Russian president, having accused him of rigging the elections, controlling the media and son on the so fo???. Off course, he couldn´t help but mention
America´s president has torn his land into a thousand pieces. The propaganda media machine covers Obama´s trail of blood and shows the president in a good way without a word of dissent. During his time in office there has been a boiling pot in America that began with the Tea Party in 2010 that took back the House of Representatives. The original Tea Party of 1773 protested the British government´s high taxes on the American colonies. The modern Tea Party´s success was short lived by Obama´s illegal interference. In addition, these American Christian conservatives feel their voice ignored by the
Ronnie Earle’s ridiculous, political case against former Rep. Tom DeLay has finally collapsed. An appeals court has not only overturned DeLay’s conviction, but has ordered him acquitted of all charges. (Snip) The prosecution of Tom DeLay was always a persecution. Then Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle (a Democrat) was sharply partisan, known so widely to be so around Texas that many Republicans simply refused to live or buy property in Travis County when he ruled. That didn’t save DeLay, obviously, but the appeals court has now, years and millions of wasted dollars later. Earle grand jury shopped until
