President Obama’s proposed military strike means, practically speaking, that the U.S. will intervene on behalf of al Qaeda in Syria. Why is this dangerous proposal being taken seriously by Congress? If the proposal were somehow designed to save the Christians and other minorities in Syria, that would be one thing. But there has been no announced intention to do that. In fact, as we have argued, the proposed strike on the Syrian regime puts Christians at more risk of genocide. Obama’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt demonstrates that he has no regard for the rights of Christians in the
World leaders from the G20 group of nations are set to meet in Russia amid sharp differences over military action against Syria´s government. Ahead of the talks, Russia´s Vladimir Putin warned that action without UN approval would be "an aggression". But US President Barack Obama said the credibility of the international community was on the line. While Syria is not officially on the G20 agenda, leaders are expected to discuss it on the sidelines. The annual summit of the G20 group of developed and developing nations which opens in St Petersburg is supposed to concentrate on the global economy.
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) used Wednesday’s hearing on whether or not the United States will take military action in Syria to ask whether the whole debate was a ruse to cover-up the many “scandals” the Obama administration is facing. Secretary of State John Kerry was present before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey, to answer questions lawmakers had about the administration’s planning for military strikes against Syria. The Obama administration first indicated last Saturday that they would seek Congressional authorization to launch a
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will present the National Constitution Center’s (NCC) 2013 Liberty Medal to Hillary Clinton during a Sept. 10 ceremony in Philadelphia, one day before the first-year anniversary of the terror attacks in Benghazi, Libya while Clinton was secretary of state. “The Liberty Medal recognizes individuals who have furthered the ideals of freedom, democracy, and equality, often against great odds,” NCC President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen said. “Hillary Clinton has devoted her life to expanding opportunities for ‘We the People’ not just in this country but around the globe.” “Former Secretary Clinton has dedicated her life to
The Syrian rebels posed casually, standing over their prisoners with firearms pointed down at the shirtless and terrified men. The prisoners, seven in all, were captured Syrian soldiers. Five were trussed, their backs marked with red welts. They kept their faces pressed to the dirt as the rebels’ commander recited a bitter revolutionary verse. “For fifty years, they are companions to corruption,” he said. “We swear to the Lord of the Throne, that this is our oath: We will take revenge.” The moment the poem ended, the commander, known as “the Uncle,” fired a bullet into the back of the first
Oh, how I long for the days when liberals wailed that "the rest of the world" hated America, rather than now, when the rest of the world laughs at us. With the vast majority of Americans opposing a strike against Syria, President Obama has requested that Congress vote on his powers as commander in chief under the Constitution. The president doesn´t need congressional approval to shoot a few missiles into Syria, nor -- amazingly -- has he said he´ll abide by such a vote, anyway. Why is Congress even having a vote? This is nothing but a fig leaf to cover Obama´s
A new study of images apparently from the Syrian attack last month concludes that the rockets delivering toxic sarin gas to neighborhoods around Damascus held up to 50 times more nerve agent than previously estimated, a conclusion that could solve the mystery of why there were so many more victims than in previous chemical attacks. The Times is providing updates, analysis and public reaction from around the world. The study, by leading weapons experts, also strongly suggests that the mass of toxic material could have come only from a large stockpile. American, British and French officials have charged that only
There are grand forces in human history. Then there are the actions of fools who think they can control events and who then start actions that spiral out of control. Ninety nine years ago this summer, a small series of events soon sparked a World War that resulted in decades of carnage -- World War I, The Russian Revolution, WWII, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War all had their beginnings in that period. (snip)Events on the world stage began to spin out of control some time ago with the financial crisis of socialist programs in an age of declining birthrates.
Technical glitches still plague the display of new healthcare plans to be offered to millions of uninsured Americans starting in 26 days, including how medical charges and deductibles are listed, industry officials say. Health insurers planning to sell policies to people who are currently uninsured, under President Barack Obama´s healthcare reform, say they expect the problems will be remedied by October 1, when consumers will be able to buy health insurance from state exchanges. On Wednesday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the lead Obamacare agency, said it was on schedule to sign final agreements with insurers between
A Senate committee today approved a resolution that authorizes military strikes on Syria meaning that it will be now put to the full chamber. The resolution, authored by New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez and Tennessee Republican Bob Corker, passed by a 10-7 vote. Two Democrats voted ´no´, a third voted ´present´ and five Republicans voted against it, including Rand Paul. Firebrand Paul had earlier attempted to introduce an amendment declaring President Obama would be violating the U.S. Constitution if he were to attack Syrian targets without clear authorization from Congress. But Menendez refused to offer the Kentucky GOP Senator´s proposal
Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren hosted an extended interview with Donald Rumsfeld Wednesday night, during which the former Defense Secretary expressed his opposition to the proposed Syria intervention and accused President Obama of trying to “blame everybody or anybody” for the situation in which he finds himself. When Van Susteren brought up Obama’s statement that the international community, not he alone, drew a “red line” on chemical weapons, Rumsfeld said, “You’re kidding, I didn’t see that.” When he recovered from his shock, Rumsefeld said, “This president has tried to blame everybody or anybody, for everything. And leadership requires that you
There is a God. Or, put another way, what goes round…comes round. The suddenly furious debate over Syria has two very blunt problems. Lying. And telling the hard truth. The latter also known as Iran. Let’s deal first with what can only be called John Kerry’s problems with what might be called a “Bright Shining Lie.” “Bush Lied” was a lie. No matter. The anti-war left sold this leftist lie like corn flakes…and they had lots of help. And one of the people who recklessly helped sell the notion that “Bush Lied” was his 2004 Democratic opponent — John Kerry. And another? Barack Obama.
The California Republican Party, long given up for dead, is showing surprising signs of life. The last two decades have marked a slow, steady decline for a party that once yielded such national figures as Earl Warren, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Its registration rolls have fallen substantially. Worse is the recent record of statewide futility, a nearly unbroken skein of losses save for the 2003 election of Arnold Schwarzenegger under extraordinary circumstances (a snap recall vote) and Steve Poizner, who used a chunk of his high-tech fortune to become insurance commissioner in 2006, as Schwarzenegger was reelected.
Just before Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, he blasted the Obama administration on Wednesday for what he termed its propaganda on military action against Syria. “We talk with these people,” he said about Secretary of State John Kerry, the administration’s chief political spokesperson making the case for war. “We assume that they are decent. But he lies. And he knows that he lies. That’s pathetic.” [Video] Putin has always been a bare-knuckles political brawler with a penchant for saying politically incorrect things about enemies -- he once said of Islamist terrorists in Chechnya, for
At this very moment here in my home state of Colorado we are in the throes of a bitterly fought recall election campaign against two of our elected state representatives, senators John Morse (D-Colorado Springs) and Angela Giron (D-Pueblo). Those who have sought the state´s constitutional remedy for out-of-touch and/or control legislators cite as their motivation these two senators´ votes in the 2013 legislative session. The people spearheading the surprisingly bipartisan recall effort claim these senators stopped paying attention to the people they represent and voted in spite of rather than in accordance with the will of their constituents.
A Senate panel has voted to authorize Barack Obama to use military force in Syria. This is a disaster in the making. Just as in Afghanistan, Obama has no goal, no plan for victory. He said that the military strikes in Syria would not be directed toward removing Bashar Assad, but then he said that it would be a good thing to remove Assad from power. This was just one of many indications of how ill-conceived and misbegotten Obama’s Syria plan really is.
The Obama administration has been engaging in “science diplomacy” by sending out its top science adviser to visit foreign countries. But John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Obama official engaged in this jet-setting, has expressed controversial views about government-imposed population controls. The Guardian reports that Holdren regularly meets with top scientists from other countries such as Brazil, Russia, China and Japan as a way new way “to reach out to bridge cultural and economic gaps between the United States and the rest of the world.”
While U.S. leaders continue pushing for war against the Syrian government, today “Al-Qaeda-linked rebels,”reports AP, “launched an assault on a regime-held Christian mountain village in the densely populated west of Syria and new clashes erupted near the capital, Damascus, on Wednesday… In the attack on the village of Maaloula, rebels commandeered a mountaintop hotel and nearby caves and shelled the community below, said a nun, speaking by phone from a convent in the village. She spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.”
There was truth to President Obama’s assertion that his credibility is not on the line in punishing Syria chemical weapons use — because he had already squandered virtually all of that vital commodity on the issue. Credibility demands clarity and constancy. Obama has shown neither quality since declaring, casually, almost haphazardly, a year ago that Bashar Assad would cross a “red line” by gassing his people. The President’s subsequent dodges and feints culminated, after Assad murdered more than 1,400 people, in the strongest signals possible that he was about to order a military strike — followed by an abrupt reversal and
Using Census data, we´ve figured out that half of the United States population is clustered in just the 146 biggest counties out of over 3000. Here´s the map, with said counties shaded in. Below the map is the list of all the counties, so you can see if you live in one of them. (Snip for map)And here´s the whole list of counties that are shaded in. Who would have thought that a Walmart commercial could make me shed a tear and then jump out of my chair, pump my fist in the air and yell out loud “Yes”? Well, that’s exactly what happened a couple years ago when I first saw a commercial about Noemi Flores, a middle-aged Hispanic woman who earned her 20-years-of-service badge from Walmart. Standing in her bright, cheery kitchen holding a cup of coffee, Noemi talks about darker days in the 1980s, when she was on welfare and raising four kids on her own. Then she started working for Walmart and things
At least John Kerry voted for the $87 billion before he voted against it. Now Sen. Ed Markey — it’s depressing to even type those words — in his first major vote in the U.S. Senate, doesn’t. He follows in the footsteps of his hero, Barack Obama, and votes … “present.” Don’t worry though, this dithering is only temporary, Markey assured us (in a statement, God forbid he should actually have to go out and adlib, or as another of his idols, Ted Kennedy, would say, “ablib.” And now Granny Warren can’t make up her mind, either. Where does the Massachusetts delegation have
Over the past 12 years, John C. Beale was often away from his job as a high-level staffer at the Environmental Protection Agency. He cultivated an air of mystery and explained his lengthy absences by telling his bosses that he was doing top-secret work, including for the CIA. For years, apparently, no one checked. Now, Beale is charged with stealing nearly $900,000 from the EPA by receiving pay and bonuses he did not deserve. He faces up to three years in prison. Beale, 64, who was a senior policy adviser in the Office of Air and Radiation, is expected to
U.S. intelligence officials had obtained, but not "processed" the intercepted communications between Syrian officials that allegedly betrayed signs of the devastating chemical attack ahead of August 21. The Obama administration has made no secret of the fact that the U.S. had intelligence detailing what they argue is the preparation of Syria´s government for the strikes, but the Associated Press´s scoop seems to, at least partially, answer one big question the administration´s case for Syrian intervention raised: if the U.S. had so much intelligence connecting the Syrian regime to the strike before it even happened, why didn´t it know about it
TEL AVIV — Israelis go through wild mood swings while President Obama zigzags on Syria, top leaders here are quietly seething. And “quietly” is the key word. By keeping a low profile, Israelis hope to give the warring sides in Syria no excuse to turn their fire across the border. But the Syrian rebels and many of their supporters in the region claim that Israel (which conspiracy-prone Arabs often believe runs America’s foreign policy) has been propping up Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Assad’s people, meanwhile, accuse the Jewish state of doing exactly the opposite by pushing Obama to war against Syria. And Obama
A Michigan State University professor said Republicans were a bunch of “dying white people” who “raped this country” and wanted to prevent “black people” from voting in a secretly recorded tirade during the first day of a creative writing class, Campus Reform reported. “If you go to the Republican convention in Florida, you see all of the old Republicans with the dead skin cells washing off them,” the professor reportedly told students. “They are cheap. They don’t want to pay taxes because they have already raped this country and gotten everything out of it they possibly could.” The professor did not
