Christians should be ‘repentant’ about the Church’s past treatment of gay and lesbian people, the Archbishop of Canterbury said last night. The Most Rev. Justin Welby told a group of traditional evangelical Christians that the Church’s historic support of homophobia was ‘utterly and totally wrong’. (Snip) The Archbishop insisted he did not regret voting against gay marriage legislation, but acknowledged that such views were seen by many as akin ‘to racism and other forms of gross and atrocious injustice’. The Marriage Act received royal assent in July and gay couples in England and Wales will be able to wed from
You might expect the leader of the Catholic Church in Chicago to explain his opposition to same-sex marriage on the basis of his religious tenets, but Cardinal Francis George says that’s secondary. “This is first of all a rational issue before it’s a faith issue,” the cardinal told me in an interview this week. “That is, it’s nature that tells us what marriage is, that in marriage, men and women aren’t interchangeable.” “We didn’t invent marriage. The church didn’t invent marriage. The state didn’t invent marriage. Nature gives us marriage. The Chinese are not Americans, and they’re not Catholic. They know what
British special forces were last night hunting Syrian missiles in readiness for Allied strikes which could start as early as tomorrow night. Cruise missile attacks and RAF raids are expected in response to the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons. A military source said: “It is vital they find every missile site that could threaten British ships or RAF jets
Lawmakers vote Thursday on Britain´s response to chemical weapons attacks in Syria -- but approval for military action will require a second vote after the opposition blocked Prime Minister David Cameron´s way. (snip)One government source told The Times newspaper that Cameron had been infuriated by Miliband´s change of mind and described him as a "copper-bottomed sh-t".
After days of following the White House line, skeptical reporting and punditry has finally arrived in the past 24 hours related to the allegedly clear evidence of a recent chemical attack in Syria and the U.S. determination to quickly strike (perhaps today) the Assad forces.Surprisingly tough AP report today, based on intel sources, that evidence concerning the chemical attack far from a "slam dunk"
WASHINGTON - A tour bus carrying relatives of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. collided with a minivan after leaving a ceremony in the U.S. capital marking the 50th anniversary of his "I Have a Dream" speech, but no one was seriously hurt, police said. The accident near the base of the Washington Monument occurred shortly before 6 p.m. EDT, U.S. Park Police Sergeant J. Innis said. The minivan ran through a red light, forcing the driver of the tour bus to slam on the brakes in a failed effort to avoid a collision, police said. Members of King´s family, including his
WASHINGTON— President Barack Obama is vowing that American retaliation for Syrian chemical weapons use would send a "strong signal," as U.S. intelligence officials readied briefings for Congress on evidence aimed at linking last week´s attack to President Bashar Assad´s government. But even as the U.S. moves closer to possible military action, new hurdles appear to be slowing the formation of an international coalition to undertake military action. And questions remain about the strength of the case against Assad. Russia blocked British efforts to seek a force resolution at the United Nations. British Prime Minister David Cameron said his country would hold
CAIRO — Egyptian state television and authorities say police have arrested two top Muslim Brotherhood figures, including an outspoken former lawmaker who has made public appeals for protests against the new military-backed government. Officials say Mohammed el-Beltagy and former Labor Minister Khaled Al-Azhari were arrested Thursday in an apartment not far from the Pyramids of Giza. El-Beltagy was wanted on charges of inciting violence, murder and terrorism. He was also wanted for involvement in an assault on a police officer who authorities say was kidnapped by protesters at a Brotherhood´s sit-in in Cairo. The sit-in was forcibly cleared by police
The Obama administration announced Thursday that it had released two prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to Algeria, the first transfers from the detention center in almost a year. The two Algerians are also the first inmates to leave Guantanamo since Obama pledged in May to redouble his efforts to close the U.S. military prison in Cuba. Obama originally promised to empty Guantanamo upon taking office in 2009, but as of Thursday, 164 prisoners remained. The Pentagon identified the Algerians as Nabil Said Hadjarab, 34, and Mutia Sadiq Ahmad Sayyab, 37. Lawyers for the men have said they were among dozens
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a new boat that will be used to patrol the Detroit River, a gateway for illegal drug smuggling. It will be named after slain Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, who was killed in December 2010 by drug cartel bandits carrying weapons from Operation Fast and Furious. "Today is the day that a Border Patrol Vessel will be christen in my sons Honor, the Brian Terry Vessel," Brian Terry´s mother, Josephine, posted on Facebook. "Thank you Border Patrol. This vessel will Patrol the waters of Michigan, where Brian grew up. VERY PROUD MOM."
WASHINGTON- America, if you want to know what the establishment media and the beneficent federal government think of you, tune your television sets in to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. You would be forgiven if you have never watched this program, and I certainly would not recommend it. I viewed about one half of one episode in preparation for this column. You will find the program on The "Learning" Channel, which is funny because you actually can feel yourself getting dumber as the episode goes on. Brain cells are literally committing suicide to end the misery. And then about halfway
At some point later today President Obama will probably release something—a document? a video? a .gif? (likely not a .gif)—that will, if all goes to plan, convince skeptical lawmakers and the 61 percent of Americans who believe the U.S. should stay out of Syria that the U.S. has no choice but to head into Syria. “Anthony H. Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said that whatever evidence the administration put forward would be the American intelligence community’s ‘most important single document in a decade,’” The New York Times reports. O.K., so there is, like, a 99-percent chance
It was only a few years ago that millions of Hispanics cheered for Barack Obama as he took the oath of office. Many welcomed a new president who promised to restore economic growth, telling them, “I will be your champion when I am in the White House.” Looking back, those promises turned out to be nothing but rhetoric. Instead of a champion, millions of Hispanics would rather have a job. Hispanic unemployment is getting worse – spiking up to 9.4 percent - and more are descending deeper into poverty every day. Hopelessness is spreading and people are giving up – as
Republicans have long blamed President Obama´s signature health care initiative for increasing insurance costs, dubbing it the "Unaffordable Care Act." Turns out, they might be right. For the vast majority of Americans, premium prices will be higher in the individual exchange than what they´re currently paying for employer-sponsored benefits, according to a National Journal analysis of new coverage and cost data. Adding even more out-of-pocket expenses to consumers´ monthly insurance bills is a swell in deductibles under the Affordable Care Act. Health law proponents have excused the rate hikes by saying the prices in the exchange won´t apply to the
President Obama spoke about the fulfilling the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who hoped every American child receive a good education, but his Justice Department is using a civil rights law to shut down a school choice program that allows black children to escape failing schools. “[W]e can stand together for the right of every child, from the corners of Anacostia to the hills of Appalachia, to get an education that stirs the mind and captures the spirit, and prepares them for the world that awaits them,” Obama said during his speech at the Lincoln Memorial in commemoration
The king of Spain himself played a nobly intentioned if blundering role in Lady Pamela Hicks´s birth. The great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, she grew up in a household where the guest list included Noël Coward, Winston Churchill, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., King Edward VIII and one Mrs. Simpson, whose hostess gift was a cold, cooked chicken from Fortnum & Mason. Lady Pamela witnessed the transfer of power that gave India its independence from Britain, in the process forging a deep bond with Jawaharlal Nehru ("Oh, I wish you had met Nehru," she said in a phone conversation from her home in
*** Growing unease: Every day that goes by, more and more members of Congress believe that they should have a voice about whether the United States launches strikes against Syria. British lawmakers forced Prime Minister David Cameron to delay joining any military action until United Nations inspectors finish their work. This all reflects a growing unease -- here and abroad -- about intervening in Syria, especially without U.N. or Arab League backing. And there’s one obvious explanation for it: the memories of Iraq. This growing unease comes as the Obama White House will brief members of Congress later today about
WASHINGTON — Striving to take action where Congress would not, the Obama administration announced new steps Thursday on gun control, curbing the import of military surplus weapons and proposing to close a little-known loophole that lets felons and others circumvent background checks by registering guns to corporations. Four months after a gun control drive collapsed spectacularly in the Senate, President Barack Obama added two more executive actions to a list of 23 steps the White House determined Obama could take on his own to reduce gun violence. With the political world focused on Mideast tensions and looming fiscal battles, the move
Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says he´s confounded by how the Obama administration has gone about explaining why a strike is in the USA´s national interest. "There really hasn´t been any indication from the administration as to what our national interest is with respect to this particular situation," Rumsfeld, secretary of defense when the U.S. attacked Iran in 2003, said Wednesday evening on the Fox Business Network. The most important issues in the region, Rumsfeld said, are "Iran´s nuclear program and the relationship between Iran and Syria — the [Bashar] Assad regime — with respect to funding terrorists that go around killing
Ronald Reagan´s family has hit out at the producers of a new Hollywood film for allegedly portraying the former President as a racist. The Republican icon is played by British actor Alan Rickman in The Butler, which tells the story of a black man who served in the White House for 34 years. However, his son claims that the portrayal implies that Reagan was prejudiced against black people, when in fact he helped the cause of African-Americans and showed friendship to the real White House butler. The film, which was released in the U.S. two weeks ago, follows Cecil Gaines, played
The tabloids have been waiting five years for a Miley "flame out."(snip) "It´s the way it is," Cyrus said. "There has always been a battle between good and evil. Always will be. You think, ´This is a chance to make family entertainment, bring families together ... and look what it´s turned into." Sorry Billy Ray, your star struck daughter and wife, as well as yourself, threw your family into a tailspin. Mr. Cyrus was obviously part of the problem
President Obama has been talking to a lot of people about Syria in recent days. His national security adviser, Susan Rice, and her team. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Intelligence officials. Secretary of State John Kerry. British Prime Minister David Cameron. French President Francois Hollande. Wednesday afternoon he even talked to PBS´ Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff, of all people. But two crucial groups the president of the United States has not talked to about the likelihood of war with Syria are congressional leaders and the American people.
Since Republicans regained control of the House in 2011, conservative outside groups have executed a relentless pressure campaign aimed at pushing the House majority further toward the base, and impressing upon lawmakers the risks of voting against the recommendation of these right-wing rainmakers. But after a summertime spat over agriculture policy, GOP lawmakers decided to push back. According to several sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the Republican Study Committee—a group of 172 conservative House members—has barred Heritage Foundation employees from attending its weekly meeting in the Capitol. (Snip)To some conservative members, this was Heritage Action moving the goalposts, plain and
Miniature "human brains" have been grown in a lab in a feat scientists hope will transform the understanding of neurological disorders. The pea-sized structures reached the same level of development as in a nine-week-old foetus, but are incapable of thought. The study, published in the journal Nature, has already been used to gain insight into rare diseases. Neuroscientists have described the findings as astounding and fascinating. The human brain is one of the most complicated structures in the universe.
Actually, they like humanity a lot less than that. On the surface liberal policies and positions don’t seem to make sense. However, they do make sense if you keep one thing in mind — liberals do not like humans or humanity. An unfair accusation? Consider the evidence. Liberal policies make sense if their objective is to punish rather than benefit humanity. Furthermore, without recognizing this aspect of liberalism you will never make sense of it. Their policies are consistent with their basic values. Liberals can’t like humanity. It would be contrary to everything else they believe. Much of damage liberalism
