In Catch-22, there is a character whose constant desire to go AWOL results in a series of demotions. The reader is introduced to him as Ex-PFC Wintergreen, a lowly mail clerk. But it turns out that his job affords him extraordinary access to information. By manipulating its flow, he quietly becomes one of the most influential men in the military, wielding more power than generals. I thought of Ex-PFC Wintergreen almost immediately after the Edward Snowden leaks made headlines, and again when General Keith Alexander, the director of the NSA, revealed one of the ways his agency was responding to
Former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young stated that Trayvon Martin is one of several martyrs under the cause of civil rights violence and injustice. In a lead-up to President Barack Obama’s address marking the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement March on Washington, the former U.N. ambassador under President Jimmy Carter interrupted MSNBC guest host Joy Ann-Reid’s question on troubles in the African-American community to express his thoughts on the Trayvon Martin case. “No, Trayvon is a martyr. We’ve had a string of martyrs from the time of Emmett Till. Every generation has its string of martyrs and they’re going
When President Barack Obama takes to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial today for his scheduled 2:45 pm address to the thousands of people who will mass there for the 50th anniversary celebration of the March on Washington, it won´t be the first time he´s stood in the shadow of Martin Luther King. Four years ago Obama went to Oslo, Norway to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor King received 45 years earlier. King was leading a campaign of nonviolent resistance to racial injustice in this country when was given the world´s most prestigious peace prize. Obama, who had won
The media have been given important new information in the case of NSA leaker Edward Snowden and don’t seem to know what to do with it. Snowden has been “outed” by the Russians as their agent. The Washington Post reports that “Before American fugitive Edward Snowden arrived in Moscow in June—an arrival that Russian officials have said caught them by surprise—he spent several days living at the Russian Consulate in Hong Kong, a Moscow newspaper reported Monday.” In other words, the Russians were in on the deception all along. It was an example of what the old Soviet KGB called “disinformation.” The
On Wednesday, Maryland Governor Martin O´Malley, a Democrat who will likely run for president in 2016, said the lives of "people of color" are valued less than those of whites in America. Speaking on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King´s "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, O´Malley said there is "too much apathy" in America "when the lives of people of color are too often valued less than the lives of white people." He called for a variety of actions that included "abolishing the death penalty," helping immigrants, and raising the minimum wage.
FORT HOOD, Texas - A military court on Wednesday sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, giving the Army psychiatrist a path to the martyrdom he appeared to crave in the attack on unarmed fellow soldiers. The American-born Muslim, who has said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression, never denied being the gunman. In opening statements, he acknowledged to the jury that he pulled the trigger in a crowded waiting room where troops were getting final medical checkups before deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. The same jurors who convicted
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of “dire consequences” should the United States decide to launch a strike on Syria, according to regional media reports. (Snip) “The U.S. threats and possible intervention in Syria is a disaster for the region and if such an act is done, certainly, the Americans will sustain damage like when they interfered in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Khamenei was quoted as saying in a Wednesday meeting with Iran’s newly installed cabinet. “Starting this fire will be like a spark in a large store of gunpowder, with unclear and unspecified outcomes and consequences,”
Former President Bill Clinton spoke at the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, where he invoked King’s memory to push for President Obama’s economic redistributionism. He linked King with Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the other pillars of Lyndon Baines Johnson’s welfare state. Clinton thanked Obama for his government interventionism and for Obamacare in the name of King. He called “inadequate income to pay for rising income” a “pre-existing condition” while suggesting that King would have hated gridlock.
On the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King´s "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington on Wednesday, the president of a prominent organization dedicated to increasing black civic participation compared conservative Supreme Court justices to KKK members and said Voter ID laws are being enacted to prevent another black president. Melanie Campbell, the president of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, said though black Americans are not threatened by biting dogs and KKK members in white hoods, the "dogs are still biting in other ways" and there is still "racism and inequality." She said, "Today there are no white
Someone should inquire of MSNBC how being widely known as a network that shills for Obama is working out for them. Oh - wait: MSNBC continued its rough 2013 in the ratings, continuing to lose significant audience from 2012. The problems were particularly prevalent in primetime, with some shows losing close to -50% of viewers. The ratings for August 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data): Primetime (Mon-Sun): 520,000 Total Viewers / 173,000 A25-54 -Total Day (Mon-Sun): 348,000 Total Viewers / 119,000 A25-54 -Compared to August 2012, MSNBC was down -28% in total viewers and -32% in the A25-54 demographic
The adult daughter of the Brunswick woman whose baby was fatally shot earlier this year testified Wednesday she grew suspicious of her mother following a phone call the night of the shooting. Ashley Glassey, 22, said Sherry West called to ask how long it would take before her baby’s insurer would send her a check. “The whole conversation didn’t settle well with me,” said Glassey, the first witness called by the defense.
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning presidency of Barack Obama has developed an unusual appetite for war. With new talk of red lines being crossed and “moral obscenities” in Syria, the Obama Administration seems poised to start another undeclared war on questionable constitutional and international grounds. As an idealistic senator, Obama wrote in The Audacity of Hope that “When the world’s sole superpower willingly restrains its power and abides by internationally agreed upon standards of conduct, it sends a message that these are rules worth following, and robs terrorists and dictators of the argument that these rules are simply tools of American imperialism.”
MARIETTA — The mother of a slain 13-month-old boy took the stand Tuesday and tearfully told jurors how she witnessed her baby being shot between the eyes by a young man she’d never met before. De’Marquise Elkins is accused of shooting Antonio Santiago execution style on March 21 while Antonio was in his stroller returning home from the post office in Brunswick. Because Elkins was not 18 years old at the time of the shooting, he cannot be sentenced to death, but faces life in prison if convicted. The trial was moved to Cobb County following concerns about media coverage and racial tensions in Brunswick.
Increasingly bellicose statements from Washington suggest the Obama Administration is preparing military action to punish Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for deploying chemical weapons last week. Sort of. The Obama Administration says it is weighing a “limited scope” military strike against Syria that would act as both punishment and as a deterrent. The strike reportedly would last no more than two days and would involve either cruise missiles launched from Navy warships or long-range bombers targeting Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles.
Hope and change: Under Barack Obama’s forcefully imposed ‘Fundamental Transformation of America’, dramatic change continues. Obama’s change is leaving dangerous cracks in America’s foundation. The Hope Obama promised during his 2008 Election Campaign but never materialized, he stole outright from the Creator. “Hope is a supernatural gift of God, by which we firmly trust that God will give us eternal life and all the means necessary to obtain it, if we do what He requires of us.” ( A Catechism of Christian Doctrine: The Penny Catechism, 136, 137) “Why must we hope in God? We must hope in God because he
The Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Gennady Zyuganov believes that Russia still needs to help Syria. "We have to constantly realize that we will be next after Syria," the leader of the Communist Party told Pravda.Ru. The situation around Syria sharply escalated on August 21, when there were reports of the use of chemical weapons near Damascus. The information was distributed from the opposition, which, of course, accused the Syrian government of the attack. In turn, the official Damascus vehemently denied any involvement in the attack. The government stressed out that toxic substances had been found
Foreign Policy: Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad´s bravado is based on the myth of a U.S. defeat that never happened and a timid White House that let four Americans die in Libya. It might be time to set him and others straight. The fruits of President Obama´s ever-shifting red line regarding Syria´s use of chemical weapons might be ripening as U.S. warships and aircraft prepare for possible cruise-missile strikes on Syrian targets. Weakness, both real and perceived, invites conflict and emboldens enemies, and our impotence in Benghazi didn´t support our warnings to Damascus.
DAMASCUS - Syria´s deputy foreign minister said on Wednesday that the United States, Britain and France helped "terrorists" use chemical weapons in Syria, and that the same groups would soon use them against Europe. Speaking to reporters outside the Four Seasons hotel in Damascus, Faisal Maqdad said he had presented U.N. chemical weapons inspectors with evidence that "armed terrorist groups" had used sarin gas in all the sites of alleged attacks. "We repeat that the terrorist groups are the ones that used (chemical weapons) with the help of the United States, the United Kingdom and France, and this has to
Pittsburgh-A woman who said she was brutally attacked by a group of black teenagers in Pittsburgh’s North Side Sunday said the girls savagely beat her while calling her racial slurs. Ginger Slepski said she suffered multiple injuries, including torn shoulder ligaments. She said she thought the girls were going to kill her. “I thought it was so animalistic. So violent. I’m so afraid for these girls to get out and walk the streets,” Slepski said.
Washington —The final refrain of Martin Luther King Jr.’s most famous speech will echo around the world as bells from churches, schools and historical monuments “let freedom ring” in celebration of a powerful moment in civil rights history. Organizers said sites in nearly every state will ring their bells at 3 p.m. their time Wednesday or at 3 p.m. EDT, the hour when King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington. Commemorations are planned from the site of the speech in Washington to the far reaches of Alaska, where participants plan to ring cow bells along with church
Many people repeatedly ask why "the West" - meaning European countries, the European Union and the United States - sits by idly and does not lift a finger to intervene to end the war crimes and crimes against humanity now being committed against Arab and Muslim people. (Snip) We Arabs have become spoiled, self-indulgent, accustomed to the good life -- and slightly delusional: we really do think that someone else has to do our dirty work. Since the West continually attempts to bring order and democracy to the people of Islam, we tend to forget that this is not the
CANBERRA, Australia — The 22-year-old Australian baseball player slain in a drive-by shooting in Oklahoma was buried in his hometown of Melbourne on Wednesday after a funeral attended by more than 500 mourners. His tearful American girlfriend draped the Oklahoma state flag over his coffin in memory of happy times the couple had shared in her home state in the final chapter of his life. The blue flag was among the last of the significant items placed by loved ones on Christopher Lane´s brown and gold coffin during the service at St. Therese´s Church. Lane´s mother, Donna Lane, offered his
The Wall Street Journal reports: Pentagon officials have firmed up plans for military strikes against Syria that would likely use cruise-missile strikes to “deter and degrade” President Bashar al-Assad’s security forces without dramatically altering the country’s balance of power, senior defense officials said Tuesday. (emphasis added) Seriously? So what exactly is our objective in Syria? To blow stuff up? If ever there was evidence that Obama has no strategy in Syria, this is it. The purpose of military power is to “alter the balance of power” in a conflict. If that is not your objective, you should not use it.
In a dim parlor furnished with red velvet couches and a stripper pole, Brooke Taylor is having a sale on herself. “I offer a lot more specials and discounts and incentives for people to come in to see me,” said Taylor, 32, a brunette prostitute in a short, green dress at the Moonlite Bunny Ranch outside Carson City, Nevada. “People are looking for deals.” Nevada’s legal brothels, which took root in the mid-1800s silver-mining boom, are dwindling, down to about 19 from roughly 36 in 1985, according to George Flint, an industry lobbyist. Many have been the highest-profile businesses in their
Double voting in a federal election is a felony. But the Holder DOJ hasn’t acted, so far. About 50 men and women packed a Rice County courtroom Tuesday afternoon as two Somali women pleaded not guilty to charges of voter fraud stemming from the general election last November. Farhiya Abdi Dool, 38, and Amina A Hassan, 31, each face one felony charge of unlawful voting for voting once by absentee ballot and once at a polling place during the 2012 general election. Each woman faces five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the offense. (Snip) Supporters of the
MSNBC’s Krystal Ball slammed the Republican Party in a tongue-in-cheek monologue at the end of Tuesday’s The Cycle, declaring that the GOP is the new Jim Crow. But in the process, she also drew attention to the problem of complacency among Democratic voters, seemingly resorting to an offensive stereotype that they are generally lazy, disinterested in public policy, and need to be driven by fear. Much of Ball’s rant was focused on how new Republican-imposed voter ID laws in many states have increased the desire to vote among traditional Democratic constituencies. She concluded by blasting the GOP as the new
