Home-retailer Hobby Lobby—owned by the Green family, who are devout Christians—just dealt the Obamacare HHS mandate a devastating one-two punch. It’s likely the Obama administration will have no choice but to now petition the U.S. Supreme Court—where President Barack Obama´s signature legislation is in danger of suffering a humiliating defeat. (snip) In its opinion, the circuit court held (1) that RFRA applies not only to human beings, but to a corporate entity like Hobby Lobby that is wholly owned and operated by humans who share a religious belief;
A bizarre attack on a 12-year-old boy operating a lemonade stand in Fairfax County is being investigated as a possible hate crime, according to a search warrant filed in Fairfax County court. The boy and a sibling had set up the stand in the courtyard of the Camden Monument Place Apartments in the 12000 block of Monument Drive on July 6 when a person wearing a full-body leotard decorated with a design of the internal human anatomy exited one of the complex’s buildings about 6:30 p.m., the warrant said. The outfit concealed the person’s identity. The person approached the stand
“No amnesty!” “Deport them all!” “What part of ‘illegal’ don’t you understand?” Those opposed to the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform bill have plenty of reasons why they won’t support it. Not now. Not ever. And plenty of those opponents are Republicans in the House, which is working on its own version of legislation. (Snip) But you know what I wish for those House GOP lawmakers? To paraphrase the Beach Boys, I “wish they all could be California(ns).” Why? Let me give you a glimpse into what immigration looks like here, on the ground in the Golden State.
A Chinese student on board Asiana Flight 214 survived the crash-landing only to be killed accidentally on the runway by a fire truck racing to the wrecked plane, a coroner confirmed Friday. San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault disclosed the findings of his autopsy on 16-year-old Ye Meng Yuan, a Chinese student. Foucralt said she died of "multiple blunt injuries" consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle. He did not say what that vehicle was. San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said officials believe the girl was struck by a specialized fire vehicle.
Looking for a remedy to erectile dysfunction? If you subscribe to former Republican presidential candidate and pizza mogul Herman Cain’s email list, you might have found a solution in your mailbox. In a move generating buzz across the Internet, “CainTV” sent out sponsored content to its list from Natural Breakthrough Research LLC with the email subject line: “Breakthrough: REMEDY for ED!” Many politicians and political organizations sell access to their email lists, often to people selling books or pushing a political agenda. Less often do you see these political lists used for pushing erectile dysfunction remedies.
Amazing data via David Freddoso’s Conservative Intelligence Briefing — and I don’t mean the topline number, either. It’s no trick for a three-term incumbent with stratospheric name recognition to lead big early over a relative unknown. As I recall, both Charlie Crist and David Dewhurst started out in landslide territory against Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, respectively, and both Rubio and Cruz had higher local profiles than Cheney does. If you live in Wyoming and aren’t a regular Fox News watcher, you might have zero idea who she is beyond her last name.
The University of California Board of Regents voted to approve Janet Napolitano as its system’s new president yesterday, but not everybody is happy with her selection. At one point, the vote had to be halted because of demonstrators who opposed the outgoing Homeland Security secretary’s enforcement of illegal-immigration laws. Six arrests were made and several demonstrators had to be forcibly removed from the UC San Francisco boardroom where the vote took place. According to Reuters, protesters shouted “undocumented is not a crime” and “Shame!” repeatedly, objecting to Napolitano’s stances on detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants, which apparently look,
President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room Friday afternoon to make a statement on the aftermath of the verdict in the George Zimmerman case. Obama spoke in a highly personal tone — reflecting on comments he made last year in which he said that Trayvon Martin could have been his son. "Another way of saying that is, Trayvon Martin could´ve been me, 35 years ago," Obama said. Obama also touched on his own experiences with racial profiling growing up.
President Obama made a surprise visit to the White House press room on Friday to speak about the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin case and made some of the most open and bold remarks about race of his presidency. While the president began by commending the judge in the case as "professional" and the jurors as "properly instructed," he brought the case into the much broader context of race in America. When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said this could´ve been my son. Another way of saying that is, a Trayvon Martin could´ve been me 35 years ago.
ROME -- A former CIA base chief in Italy who was convicted in absentia in the kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric from the streets of Milan, has been arrested, an Italian Justice Ministry official said Thursday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to say where and when Robert Seldon Lady´s arrest took place. The Italian news agency Adnkronos quoted police in Panama as saying that Lady was taken into custody near the border with Costa Rica.[Link in Italian] Other Italian news outlets reported that he was arrested while entering Panama from Costa Rica
Newport, R.I. - Syria has put President Obama’s enlightened realism in international affairs to its stiffest test. Direct military intervention could immerse the United States in yet another open-ended Middle East war. Doing nothing would mean failing to live up to America’s humanitarian obligations and harming America’s regional interests. (Snip) In Lebanon, popular anger over Hezbollah’s intervention in Syria is rising, and the United States must exploit this opportunity, even if it means negotiating directly with Iran to rein in its Lebanese proxy. Hezbollah has been Mr. Assad’s ace in the hole.
Speaking at the White House on Friday, President Obama addressed the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial for the killing of Trayvon Martin for the first time since 2012, when he declared that if he had a son, he’d look like Martin. This time, Obama said, “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.” Obama also said, “Reasonable doubt was relevant, and they rendered a verdict. Once the jury´s spoken, that´s how our system works.” Obama said he was "bouncing around" ideas with his staff on how to respond to the Zimmerman verdict, adding,
President Barack Obama said Friday that "Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago" in his first live comments since a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman last weekend in the teenager´s shooting death. He also said protests against the verdict should remain nonviolent. The president said that Americans are aware of the "history of racial disparity in our criminal laws" and said the government should review some state and local legislation, such as Florida´s "stand your ground" law, saying they may promote rather than discourage violent confrontations.
Washington - A federal judge fired difficult questions at the Obama administration and at civil liberties lawyers on Friday in a court case about whether U.S. citizens abroad targeted in drone strikes can seek compensation from the government. At a hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington, Judge Rosemary Collyer said she would rule as soon as she could, at least on the preliminary question of whether citizens or their family members have a right to bring a lawsuit. (Snip) "The executive is not an effective check on the executive when it comes to a person's constitutional rights," Collyer said.
A developing situation on White Castle Ln., in North Houston where several people were reportedly being held against their will for ten years. Houston Police went to the house around 8:30 this morning and found the front door had been nailed shut. Channel 13 reports that several men, ranging in age from 54 to 79 years old, were found locked in a garage. At least one person was hospitalized, and one suspect was taken into police custody. We have a reporter on the way to the scene to bring us updates throughout the day.
As David Firestone wrote yesterday, the standards for cooperation in Congress have fallen so low that Senators pat themselves on the back whenever they manage to pass legislation. (Snip) Take Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who is warming a seat held with distinction by Kay Bailey Hutchison and Ann Richards. In about six months in office, Mr. Cruz has devoted himself to opposing everything President Obama wants. (The Mitch McConnell strategy of 2009.) Mr. Cruz tried to block the nomination of Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense, for example, by demanding that he prove that he wasn’t
Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson expressed his extreme displeasure on CNN tonight over how the Trayvon Martin case has been covered in the media. He railed against “race hustlers” like Al Sharpton and told Piers Morgan the media is irresponsibly making Martin out to be some kind of “innocent little kid” instead of, in his opinion, being honest about Martin being a young thug. Peterson said that people like Sharpton and President Obama have only injected themselves into this case to “incite the anger of black Americans and others,” adding that they’ve been “using black Americans by dividing the races”
Four words of advice for African Americans in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal: Wake the hell up. The Sunday after Zimmerman went free was a day of protest for many of us. From Biscayne Boulevard in Miami to Leimert Park in Los Angeles, to the Daley Center in Chicago to Times Square in New York City, African Americans — and others who believe in racial justice — carried out angry, but mostly peaceful demonstrations.Good. This is as it should have been. But if that’s the end, if you just get it out of your system
Sincere, well-intentioned Americans are asking, "What must we do to heal the racial divide following the Zimmerman trial?" What my naïve fellow Americans do not comprehend is that the Democratic Party and the mainstream media are heavily invested in keeping racial tension alive. During Obama´s presidency, race exploitation has been on steroids, used by Obama minions to silence opposition to his lawless implementation of his socialist agenda. Therefore, Democrats and the MSM will continue stirring the pot of racial division until it is no longer profitable. The American people have proven their eagerness to put race behind us
Seventeen years ago today, the lives of 230 men, women and children were snuffed out and the lives of their families and friends were forever changed. At 8:31 p.m. ET on July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800 fell from the sky in a sickening fireball of debris and human carnage, plunging into the Atlantic Ocean about 8 miles off the southern coast of Long Island, New York. (Snip) Hillary Rodham Clinton, the nation’s first co-President, was as much a powerful political influence and purveyor of false reality then as she is today. In fact, the parallels between her role in the narrative of TWA Flight 800 and the official
Cairo - More than two weeks after Egypt´s military unseated the country´s first freely elected president, Washington refused to call the power grab a military coup, sparking criticism from supporters of Mohammed Morsi who believe they were robbed of their democratic right after voting for the now-ousted leader. On July 3, backed by widespread support, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi forced Morsi out, suspended the country´s constitution and ushered in a transition plan that dissolved the legislature and set the groundwork for fresh elections. Interim president Adly Mansour was swiftly
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he will use every resource he has at his disposal to stop President Barack Obama from bailing out newly-bankrupt Detroit because he believes the city can and must save itself and learn from its fiscal mistakes. "I basically say he [Obama] is bailing them out over my dead body because we don’t have any money in Washington.” “There’s some good things that come out of bankruptcy,”
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has banned all illegal boat refugees from ever settling in the country. Mr Rudd announced on Friday that all new unauthorised asylum-seekers will be sent to Papua New Guinea under a regional resettlement deal, declaring future boat refugees will have ´no chance´ of staying in Australia as refugees. The tough move is designed to prevent people smugglers exploiting refugees and taking vast sums of money putting them on leaky wooden boats with false promises that they will be able to make Australia their home. In a blunt message to the people traffickers, Mr Rudd said:
MSNBC’s Martin Bashir just might be the most biased and intellectually dishonest person to anchor a so-called “news” program on television today. On the show hilariously bearing his name Thursday, Bashir actually asked a liberal guest, “Is Darrell Issa determined to become the most repugnant politician in the history of American politics, or has he already achieved that feat?” (video follows with transcript and commentary): CONGRESSMAN DARRELL ISSA (R-CALIFORNIA): I´m always shocked when the ranking member seems to want to say - like a little boy whose hand’s caught in the cookie jar – what hand, what cookie?
