Second IRS staffer pleads the Fifth

A second IRS employee summoned to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee invoked the Fifth Amendment on Wednesday and refused to answer questions — a flashback to Lois Lerner, who did the same during a hearing on the agency’s scandal last month. Gregory Roseman, who worked as a deputy director of acquisitions at the IRS, exercised his constitutional rights when Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) started interrogating him about panel findings that he helped a friend procure potentially $500 million worth of IRS contracts.

What Can Stop

Anthony Weiner´s comeback gamble might be paying off. What seemed improbable became perhaps the inevitable last night, as new polling shows Weiner in the lead of the Democratic primary for New York City mayor for the first time ever over his chief rival, Christine Quinn. He´s up, but he´s not in the clear — and one big tabloid scoop could still bring him back down. The shamed former Congressman who resigned after an unflattering sexting scandal two years ago is apparently shamed no more in the eyes of many voters. President Obama placed congratulatory phone calls to the gay rights activists who prevailed in a pair of Supreme Court cases Wednesday, telling them he was proud of their efforts and pleased that the Defense of Marriage Act and a ruling restricting gay marriage in California had been overturned. "We´re proud of you guys, and we´re proud to have this in California," Obama told Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, the plaintiffs who challenged California’s anti-gay marriage Proposition 8. The call, placed from Air Force One as the

Update: On Wednesday morning, Aaron Hernandez was led from his house in handcuffs by law-enforcement officials and taken away in a police cruiser. There is no word yet on the specifics of the charges. The Massachusetts State Police said that Hernandez would be arraigned later today. At 10:20, the Patriots announced on Twitter that Hernandez had been released from the team. When crime and sports interact, the lines separating the two are naturally blurry. WASHINGTON Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the Pentagon will begin the process to extend health care, housing and other federal benefits to the same-sex spouses of military members as soon as possible. Wednesday´s Supreme Court decision opens the door for married gay couples to get federal benefits. Defense officials estimate there are 18,000 same-sex couples in the active duty, National Guard and Reserves. It´s unclear how many of those are married. The court ruling also could allow same-sex spouses to be buried at Arlington Cemetery. The Pentagon has said that by Oct. 1, it would extend a variety of

President Barack Obama faced an uncomfortable truth Tuesday: He was powerless to stop George W. Bush’s Supreme Court from eviscerating the most consequential civil rights law of the past half-century. The constitutional law professor sat by helplessly — “deeply disappointed” — as Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a 5-4 majority opinion that tore down one section of the Voting Rights Act and effectively killed another. Obama, who voted against Roberts in 2005, could see it coming. Everyone in Washington could. Roberts had written critically of the Voting Rights Act as a young lawyer in the Reagan administration,

In about 30 seconds, at least five men smashed their way into a jewelry store case, helping themselves to nearly a million dollars worth of watches. But it’s what they left behind that may lead to their capture, Atlanta police said Monday. “This was well-coordinated and thought-out,” Sgt. Greg Lyon said. “They had seconds to commit this and get away.” And they did get away. Investigators hope the public can offer additional clues to those responsible, Lyon said Monday. One of the sledgehammers was left on the floor of Mayors Jewelry during the smash-and-grab Friday night at Lenox Square.

President Obama, in his statement hailing the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, promised that he wouldn’t try to force religious institutions to conduct gay marriages. “On an issue as sensitive as this, knowing that Americans hold a wide range of views based on deeply held beliefs, maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom is also vital,” Obama said. “How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision — which applies only to civil marriages — changes that.”

What was the President of the US doing last night on the eve of his $100-million, one-week junket to Africa? Tweeting to voice his support for a Democrat filibustering a controversial abortion bill in the Texas state house. The World’s Number One Champion of partial birth abortions tweeted: “Something special is happening in Austin night.” That something special was State Sen. Wendy Davis (D) filibustering for nearly 13 hours to protest a bill that would have banned abortion in the state of Texas after 20 weeks.

Addressing the debate over immigration reform in the Senate, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, told PJ Media that the best way to secure the border is through a “robust” guest-worker program. PJ Media asked Norquist if he agrees with conservative lawmakers who want the border secure first before a pathway to citizenship is offered to illegal immigrants. “They’re working out something that answers that question on the Senate side and point of fact, the most important thing is a guest-worker program like Eisenhower had. Conservatives, increasingly in the political wilderness on the national level since the disastrous 2006 midterms, are smiling at the news of sinking poll numbers for President Obama. The RCP average of polls of the president’s national approval numbers show President Obama at his lowest approval score in 17 months — just over 45%. The president has been buffeted by scandals early in his second term, including the IRS targeting of Tea Party, pro-Israel, and pro-life groups; surveillance of reporters from AP, Fox News, and likely CBS (Sharyl Attkisson); the Benghazi debacle; and the vast NSA monitoring program revealed by

The President, First Lady and daughters Malia and Sasha were headed to Andrews Air Force Base.

Dissenting from this morning´s opinion on the Defense of Marriage Act, Justice Antonin Scalia – as expected – holds nothing back. In a ripping dissent, Scalia says that Justice Anthony Kennedy and his colleagues in the majority have resorted to calling opponents of gay marriage "enemies of the human race." But to defend traditional marriage is not to condemn, demean, or humiliate those who would prefer other arrangements, any more than to defend the Constitution of the United States is to con- demn, demean, or humiliate other constitutions. To hurl such accusations so casually demeans this institution.

No crisis should go to waste, an eternal truth highlighted in bold by a purported climate change apocalypse that is now the target of actions newly proposed by President Obama. This so-called “crisis” will flood not various coastlines, but instead the front pages, replacing other, less flattering political headlines for the administration. And if the proposed actions offer the potential of sizable wealth transfers to political allies? That is more than mere icing on the cake. Whatever the weakness of the evidence on greenhouse gases and climate effects, the real goal of carbon policy is a regional redistribution of wealth

The authority granted to the Environmental Protection Agency has exploded under the Obama administration, regulating vast sections of the national economy, according to a new report. A report by the libertarian American Legislative Exchange Council found that the EPA’s new authority has cost taxpayers billions of dollars and the economy millions of jobs, while also usurping the authority of states to govern their own environmental affairs. “During Obama’s first term, the nation has seen an unprecedented increase in the EPA’s power over states,” said Todd Wynn, director of ALEC’s Task Force on Energy, Environment and Agriculture.

US economy grows at slower

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 1.8 percent in the first three months of the year, significantly slower than first thought. The steep revision occurred mostly because consumers spent less than previously estimated, a sign that higher taxes could be dampening growth. The Commerce Department revised its estimate of economic growth for the January-March quarter down from a 2.4 percent annual rate. The revised rate was still faster than the 0.4 percent rate in the October-December quarter. Economists had thought growth in the April-June quarter would be 2 percent or less.

For several weeks before the controversy blew up last week, Ms. Deen´s agent had been negotiating with the Food Network to extend her contract, which ends June 30, the people said. One issue complicating the negotiations: her ratings had slid substantially over the past season. In his January inaugural address sketching out the promise of a second presidential term, here are some things Barack Obama did not mention: Surveillance. Drones. Syria. Chechnya. North Korea. Benghazi. Guantanamo. And yet from roughly March 6, the day Rand Paul staged his 13-hour Senate filibuster to protest Obama’s drone policies, the White House has been whiplashed from one foreign policy and national security crisis to another. Facing a near constant state of emergency, Obama has been hard-pressed to promote his message on issues like gun control, immigration, health care and the economy.

Nairobi, Kenya - As President Barack Obama embarks on a three-nation African tour, Kenya is in an uproar, with citizens angry that the White House will not visit their country despite Mr. Obama´s strong ancestral connections here. Obama arrives on the continent today on a visit to neighboring Tanzania, Senegal, and South Africa – which has prompted talk increases about whether the first black American president may visit ailing Nelson Mandela, the first black president of formerly white-ruled South Africa. However, the Africa jaunt doesn´t include Kenya, birthplace of Obama´s father and regarded as a key ally of the West

Reuters reported the posting, citing an unnamed executive from a South Korean online security form, NSHC. “We have seen the sites where the details were posted and clips that supposedly capture the process of hacking into websites,” the news agency quoted its source as saying. Minnesota state representative Ryan Winkler, a white Democrat, did not have the world´s most well-thought-out response to the Supreme Court´s 5–4 ruling against a key provision of the Voting Rights Act today. As you can see in the tweet above, he referred to Clarence Thomas, who voted with the majority, as "Uncle Thomas." Uncle Tom is a derogatory term used to describe "a black who is overeager to win the approval of whites (as by obsequious behavior or uncritical acceptance of white values and goals)," which is exactly how it´s being used here by Winkler. I am Hispanic and we Hispanic Americans only belong to the American community and vote for what´s best for America and this immigration bill as presented by the Gang of 8 is very bad.

Roger Wicker, who has voted on both sides of the dispute. Protestors have sent “hundreds or thousands” of calls to Ohio Republican Sen. In many parts of the continent, Presidents Bush and Bill Clinton are more fondly remembered, for multi-billion pound programmes to treat AIDS and ease trade. Mr Obama, by contrast, has launched no similar initiative, and faces growing criticism for his use of drones in the skies above Africa and widening militarisation of the US approach to the continent. Protestors in South Africa are planning mass demonstrations against Mr Obama´s economic and foreign policies when he visits later this week. Kenyan officials privately admit they are angered that the US president, whose father was Kenyan, is not going there.
