Hassan al-Banna, the Muslim Brotherhood’s epigrammatic founder, was never at a loss for the chilling turn of phrase. His rally cry, the Brotherhood’s signature pledge that “Jihad is our way” and “Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope,” is the soundtrack of the “Arab Spring.” It speaks for a region over two-thirds of whose putative liberty lovers prefer to kill apostates than to abide freedom of conscience. Their embrace of the very sharia chauvinism that ties together Banna, bin Laden, the Saudi royals, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev explodes the Western myth of the moderate Muslim
Thousands of people with serious medical problems are in danger of losing coverage under President Obama´s health care overhaul because of cost overruns, state officials say. At risk is the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, a transition program that´s become a lifeline for the so-called uninsurables -- people with serious medical conditions who can´t get coverage elsewhere. The program helps bridge the gap for those patients until next year, when under the new law insurance companies will be required to accept people regardless of their medical problems.
The media treatment of black conservatives has been a hot topic in conservative circles for the past few months, and the latest high-profile figure to weigh in is Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, who said in an appearance on C-SPAN that the media tears apart any black individual who does not fit a certain mold of “what to except from a black person” in American politics. Laura Ingraham, filling in for Bill O’Reilly tonight, clashed with Reverend Jacques DeGraff over whether Thomas was right in his assessment. DeGraff argued that regardless of political affiliation, African-Americans
A new poll from Emily’s List shows an overwhelming number of voters now support the idea. It’s a movement the group hopes someone in the sisterhood is about to inherit. With polls showing Hillary Clinton holding a formidable lead over all other potential candidates for president in 2016, a press conference to promote the idea of a woman president seems a little behind the news, a treasured dream catching up with a new reality, or perhaps a stalking horse for Clinton.
South Carolina Democratic Chairman Dick Harpootlian is getting some heat today for a comment he made about that state’s Republican governor at Friday night’s Jefferson-Jackson dinner, shortly before Vice President Joe Biden took the stage. Harpootlian’s comment came during his introduction of South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen. “In about 18 months from now,” he said, “hopefully he’ll have sent Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from.” The comment drew cheers and laughs from the audience in attendance, but Harpootlian is now facing harsh criticism,
Explosions shook Damascus early on Sunday and Syrian state television said Israeli rockets had struck a military research center on the outskirts of the capital. The blasts occurred a day after an Israeli official said his country had carried out an air strike targeting a consignment of missiles in Syria. The research center hit on Sunday was also targeted by Israel in January."The new Israeli attack is an attempt to raise the morale of the terrorist groups which have been reeling from strikes by our noble army,"
Columbia, S.C.—The challenges facing the Republican Party as it heads into the elections of 2014 and 2016 were on stark display here this weekend as South Carolina Republicans gathered for their annual convention, an event that revealed a party in the throes of some internal strife. The source of the argument seems to boil down to what it means to be a true conservative in the modern Republican Party, and whether the party needs to change in order to broaden its appeal, particularly to Latino voters. Disagreement boiled over most publicly when a few hundred delegates attempted to seat
Beijing-China will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas next week for separate bilateral talks as it tries to shore up its role in a region where its diplomatic influence is limited. Netanyahu´s visit -- the first trip by a top Israeli leader to China since former prime minister Ehud Olmert visited in 2007 -- will be focused on trade, though experts have also said he is likely to discuss Iran´s nuclear program with China. China, Iran´s top oil customer and a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, has opposed unilateral sanctions on Tehran
A Russian scientist has claimed that he has found the first fragments of a mystery object which caused a huge explosion over Siberia more than a century ago. The Tunguska Event in June 1908 saw a mysterious blast more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb flatten trees over an 800 square mile radius, knock people from their feet and shatter windows. The widely accepted theory is that the explosion was caused by an asteroid or comet breaking up as it entered the Earth´s atmosphere. But with no evidence of a comet, just one death and few witnesses, experts have been
The tale of Brenda Heist, the Pennsylvania mother who abandoned her two children only to turn up in Florida 11 years later, has taken another unlikely turn. On Saturday, she remained jailed on a Santa Rosa County warrant for alleged violation of probation, forgery and giving a false name to law enforcement, said Art Forgey, a spokesman for the Alachua County Sheriff´s Office. Heist, who used the assumed name Kelsie Lyanne Smith, is awaiting extradition, Forgey told CNN affiliate WJXT. She turned herself in Friday. Heist, meanwhile, may not have spent most of those 11 years homeless,
She is known for writing about her colourful private life, her dramatic conversion to Islam and a spectacular falling-out with her half-sister, Cherie Blair. So perhaps it’s no surprise that when Lauren Booth decided she wanted a new husband, she advertised on Facebook. (Snip) He would have to have his own teeth and be able to ‘pray’ and to ‘pay’, she added. Secret drinkers, CIA stooges and anyone who fancied Sunday roast at her brother-in-law Tony Blair’s house were told they need not apply. The journalist and broadcaster – a vocal opponent of the Iraq War who now
The Churchill Down race track may be awash with rain, but that did not stop the spectators at the Kentucky Derby from trotting out their finest headgear. In the hours before the 139th running of the race Saturday, ladies and gentlemen crowding the stands were busy showing off their over-the-top hats decorated with everything from flowers to feathers, ribbons and even figurines. Clothing choices made by some of the guests were no less eye-catching, with footwear and jackets decorated with horses and racing scenes. Because of the rain, many participants arriving at the track were forced to cover
For the Left, I am the target of deepest hatred. For my trenchant views, expressed in this newspaper, they call me ‘insane’, ‘reactionary’, ‘racist’, a ‘Nazi’, a ‘shroudwaver’, a ‘witch’ and a ‘warmonger’. I have been accused of ‘unmatched depths of ignorance and bigotry’ and being the ‘queen of mean’. It was even suggested (in a particularly extreme spasm of hyperbole) that I eat broken bottles and kill rats with my teeth. This resort to crude insult against anyone who dares to challenge their shibboleths is typical of the Left. It doesn’t argue its case. It simply tries to shut
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons was arrested yesterday over allegations of rape and sexual assault relating to two men. Nigel Evans was taken to a police station in Lancashire, where he is Conservative MP for Ribble Valley, and questioned over offences dating from 2009 to March this year. Forensic teams were searching his two homes in London and Pendleton, Lancashire, as part of their inquiries. Yesterday afternoon, they could be seen examining his white Saab convertible, which was parked near his constituency home. By last night, no charges had been made against Mr Evans
Beirut - Israeli warplanes have attacked a shipment of missiles at Damascus International Airport that was bound for Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement, officials from the United States, Israel and Lebanon told reporters Saturday. The attack Friday coincided with mounting pressure on the Obama administration to formulate a response to the growing risk of weapons proliferation in the Syrian war, notably the possibility that chemical weapons are being used in the conflict and could fall into the hands of extremists. It also came amid renewed reports of sectarian violence in the northern coastal region
Houston -In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, outgoing National Rifle Association president David Keene said Barack Obama ´knows better´ than to claim American guns are to blame for violence in Mexico. ´I would rank the president´s statement about American guns being responsible for the mayhem in Mexico right up there with the ads running before the election that said that he wasn´t opposed to Second Amendment rights. The fact of the matter is, he knows better.´ Keene spoke to MailOnline on the convention floor at the NRA´s annual meeting and convention in Houston, Texas. Obama claimed Friday
I had hoped this nonsense would end with the reign of Steve Capus, but once again we have NBC News forced to apologize for yet-another dishonest edit meant to push the left´s agenda. Thanks to NRO´s Andrew Johnson, we learned that on Friday MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts used selective clips from a speech by Vice President Joe Biden to make it look as though Biden was making a push for gun control. Biden´s speech had nothing to do with guns. Here is the unedited clip. How low of NBC News to use a speech commemorating four Americans
The names of the witnesses who will be at the House Oversight Committee Hearing next Wednesday relating to last September´s attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi on have reportedly surfaced. Gregory N. Hicks, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Libya at the time of the Benghazi terrorist attacks; (Snip) During the months of December and January, Breitbart News specifically asked the State Department switchboard for Benghazi witness Hicks´ contact information; the State Department claimed his location was unknown and they therefore ccould not provide information as
There’s a brouhaha a-brewin’ over comments by Niall Ferguson at an investor conference. Ferguson suggested that because John Maynard Keynes was gay, effete, and childless he might have lacked concern for posterity. After all, Keynes famously proclaimed ”in the long run we’re all dead.” In a nigh-upon hysterical and terribly written item, Tom Kostigen of Financial Advisor says Ferguson took “gay-bashing to new heights.” He adds, “Apparently, in Ferguson’s world, if you are gay or childless, you cannot care about future generations nor society.” Now, I don’t know exctly what
Strike hard, strike without mercy. One war, two blows of intense ferocity, the first an act of medieval barbarism, the second an exemplar of 21st century precision warfare; but the line that connects them is becoming ever clearer. A pile of corpses lies sprawling, arms akimbo, against the wall of a house. We have seen women and children dead in Syria before, but not in this sort of random pile, untended, blood still coming from the toddlers´ wounds, their mouths yawning, their limbs twisted under their bodies. The photograph is too distressing to publish: the mentality of the men who
Gun control advocates are in hysterics, using frenzied, emotional attacks against Senators who opposed gun control last month in hopes of changing the momentum. This explains why Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) has been targeted in New Hampshire, and it´s why Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly have been targeting Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in Kentucky. Staunch gun control supporters saw Sandy Hook Elementary as their opportunity to secure more gun laws, but now they see that opportunity fading away. Thus, they are "conducting surveys, staging rallies, funding television ads and storming town-hall meetings."
Top Tory Nigel Evans was sensationally arrested today on suspicion of rape, the Sunday Mirror can reveal. As a Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr Evans holds a top job in British politics and is charge of ensuring MPs obey the rules. The 55-year-old politician - who came out as gay in 2010 - is accused of raping a man and sexually assaulting a second man between July 2009 and March this year. Detectives from Lancashire Police swooped on Mr Evans’ cottage in the Lancashire village of Pendleton this morning. Police forensic teams also searched the property.
The Head Start program, a favorite of President Barack Obama, had an interesting solution for the problems caused by sequestration: low-income children in the program were sent home ten days early. At the same time, 2,800 Head Start leaders spent a total of $752,059 attending a three-day conference in National Harbor, MD. The money used for the conference came from the program’s Training and Technical Assistance funds. Those funds were available because Congress allocates them separately from Head Start´s operating costs, and the Office of Head Start took the hit from the sequester
To reduce the growing prison population and escalating prison costs, the U.S Bureau of Prisons says it is now revising its "compassionate release" rules so more ailing and aging inmates can be freed. A report from the Justice Department´s inspector general says the revised rules will expand the compassionate release program by making inmates with a life expectancy of up to 18 months eligible for consideration (versus the current 12 months). The revised rules also will explain what level of functioning is "extraordinary and compelling" enough for inmates to be considered for release.
