The New Anti-Atheists
National Review Online, by Jonah Goldberg    Original Article

Proselytizers of atheism seem to have concluded that if they’re big enough jerks, they will seduce the faithful into abandoning God. It’s sort of like asking Don Rickles to run your customer-service desk. Christopher Hitchens was a friend, but when he talked about religion, he could be — to use a technical term — a Grade-A Schmuck. Likewise, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and the other champions of a soulless, antiseptic world have all the charm of a toothache when they lecture people to kick the habit of the opiate of the masses.

PLAISTOW, N.H. — Last month, Cameron Lyle of Plaistow, New Hampshire had a decision to make. He could finish up his senior season of track at the University of New Hampshire, or he could give the season up and have an opportunity to save someone’s life. It was a no-brainer. Lyle will be donating his bone marrow to an anonymous recipient on April 24. As a result, he will have to miss the final two meets of his career, including the America East Championships, where he was hoping to throw shot put.

CARACAS - President Nicolas Maduro´s government declared a 90-day "emergency" in Venezuela´s electricity sector on Tuesday to speed up infrastructure work and equipment imports needed to prevent politically-contentious power cuts. Officials have blamed periodic blackouts on sabotage and excessive consumption, while critics say the sector is suffering from poor management and inefficiency following the late socialist leader Hugo Chavez´s nationalization of the sector. Maduro, who won a vote to succeed his former mentor Chavez this month, has promised a government of "efficiency" to tackle day-to-day problems like power outages plaguing the South American nation´s

Martinez — Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa launched an urgent appeal for more donations Monday, saying that a funding shortage could force it to drop 200 people from its roster of 1,200 seniors receiving home-delivered meals. The Martinez-based nonprofit group currently uses 800 volunteers per year to deliver one nutritious meal each day to 1,200 homebound, low-income elderly people throughout Contra Costa County, according to program director Paul Kraintz. During a Senate hearing on immigration reform Tuesday, Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had a testy back-and-forth over the performance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Sessions challenged Napolitano on whether she had met with leader of the ICE employees’ union in the wake of reports of low morale among ICE agents. Napolitano replied that she had not. “I think you should have met with them,” Sessions said. “I think there’s a real problem there. We have a very real problem. BOSTON—Hoping to capitalize on public anger over the Boston Marathon bombing, a group of state legislators, including U.S. Senate candidate Daniel B. Winslow, has revived a proposal to reinstate the death penalty in Massachusetts. Advocates for the measure, first proposed by Gov. Mitt Romney in 2005 and repeatedly rejected by the Legislature, said at a Statehouse press conference this morning that they have included it as an amendment to the state budget being debated in the House this week. Massachusetts abolished the death penalty in 1984. “We have this option on the federal side. We should have the same

Was the Boston Marathon bombing the result of an intelligence failure? That’s the question members of the House and Senate intelligence committees will be asking senior FBI officials at closed hearings on Tuesday. In particular they and other lawmakers want to know how Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s six-month trip to Russia in 2011 and 2012 could have escaped the FBI’s attention, despite the fact that he had already been investigated for possible extremist ties. Senate intelligence panel chairman Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California on Monday said she did not understand why the elder Tsarnaev brother’s visit

In what can be considered a very rare ratings victory for a news network, Fox News beat out all other cable programming in total viewership last week during its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. In both total day and primetime totals for the week of April 15-21, Fox beat out cable powerhouses like the USA Network (which typically ranks first), the History Channel, A&E, and Nickelodeon. Election coverage notwithstanding, the last time a news network ranked first among all cable was nearly a decade ago during coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

BOSTON- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a U.S. Senate panel Tuesday her department knew of one Boston bombing suspect´s trip to Russia. However, the FBI did not know of Tamerlan Tsarnaev´s trip to a region of Russia dominated by Islamist violence, The Hill reported, because an airline misspelled his name on a flight manifesto given to the U.S. government. Napolitano told Senate Republicans her department was aware of Tamerlan Tsarnaev´s departure from the country, but the FBI had closed its investigation of him when he returned, The Hill reported.

AUBURN, Ala. -- There was a funeral at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and College Street this weekend, and thousands of people traveled great distances to be here, determined to say a final goodbye to a pair of old friends. Many took pictures, hoping to freeze the moment in time, while others paused to say a few words before offering a final gesture of love. Few tears, however, were shed, despite the finality of the day, and the undercurrent of sadness touched all who attended. Everywhere you looked, people were hugging and smiling, soaking up the sunshine on an

AP spokesman Paul Colford told Reuters that the message, which also said U.S. President Barack Obama was injured, was "bogus" but did not immediately provide more details. The AP´s Twitter account was suspended shortly after the fake tweet. The news organization said the tweet came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists.

WASHINGTON -- CNN´s John King says he is embarrassed after wrongly reporting last week that a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was arrested, calling the mistake a "double kick in the head" because he´s a Boston native. "When you do something like this, it´s embarrassing," King, the network´s chief national correspondent, told WTOP on Tuesday. "The one thing you have to do is look straight in the camera and say, ´We were wrong.´" CNN was criticized for its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. On Wednesday, it was one of at least four major news organizations that cited anonymous sources when reporting an arrest was imminent.

During a big chunk of the Bush years, there was a good deal of legitimate concern about the extent to which the government was monitoring us. And then there was some flat out crazy stuff. Naomi Wolf spoke for many when she periodically would come unglued about one imagined violation or another. She would spew a lot of nonsense about how if you fly on a plane, the government would know what you read, where you’re going, who you’re visiting etc. with the smug assurance that all conspiracy theorists somehow master (watch the first 30 seconds of this if you doubt me). Often breathless front page stories about data mining and phone tapping were a regular fixture of the news cycle. There was all that nonsense — and it was nonsense — about the government monitoring libraries.

According to his schedule, President Obama will take time out this week to address a gala thrown by Planned Parenthood--the abortion industry’s favourite lobby. It’s an extraordinary move, not just because the issue is so controversial but because Planned Parenthood has recently disgraced itself over the Gosnell trial. [Snip] He also operated a filthy clinic covered in cat feces and used untrained employees to carry out medical procedures. A question that has repeatedly been asked is “Who knew about this?” and “What did they do about it?” Last week, Planned Parenthood answered with “We did” and “As little as possible.”

After hearing impassioned arguments from attorneys on both sides of the Kermit Gosnell capital-murder trial Tuesday, a Philadelphia judge threw out three of the seven first-degree murder charges Gosnell faced for allegedly killing fetuses born alive at his abortion clinic. Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Minehart also tossed out all five counts against Gosnell accusing him of corpse abuse for storing the feet of aborted fetuses in plastic containers in his now closed Women´s Medical Society clinic. Also dismissed by Minehart was one count of infanticide - the intentional killing of an infant. All other counts against Gosnell,
