Grammy Award-winning singer Dionne Warwick has filed for bankruptcy in New Jersey, citing tax liabilities she has attributed to financial mismanagement, her publicist said on Monday. Warwick, 72, known for "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" and other popular songs, filed the petition on March 21 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey, the state where she was born and currently lives. She listed total assets of $25,500 and total liabilities of more than $10.7 million, nearly all tax claims by the Internal Revenue Service and the state of California, according to the filing.

The state of Tennessee can accept Georgia’s proposal to a long-running boundary dispute or settle it in court. That’s the message in a resolution the Georgia Senate passed overwhelmingly Monday, marking the latest chapter in Georgia’s bid to gain access to drinking water from the bountiful Tennessee River. The resolution, approved 48-2, would set the boundary between Georgia and Tennessee at the 35th parallel. That’s where the boundary was established before 1817, when an erroneous survey set it slightly to the south, said Senate President Pro Tempore David Shafer, R-Duluth.

A cautious and conflicted Supreme Court on Tuesday took up for the first time a detailed examination of same-sex marriage, and justices wondered openly about whether it was time for the court to render a judgment. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, considered to be the pivotal vote on the issue, said the court was in “uncharted waters.” He questioned whether it should have accepted the case, which concerns California’s constitutional amendment, approved by voters, that restricts marriage to heterosexual couples. (Snip) The court’s liberals sharply questioned Washington lawyer Charles J. Cooper, who represented proponents of Prop 8

The phrase “low information voter” was originally coined to describe people who were too stupid to vote for liberal policies because they didn’t know what was good for them. “Low Information Voters will vote against labor unions, in spite of the fact that the labor unions are responsible for getting them the 40 hour work week, decent wages, employer provided health insurance, vacations, lunch hours, and breaks, among other things.” (Snip) What supposedly distinguished LIVs from ‘thinking’ voters was their use of cues instead of individual, reasoned analysis. “Cues” are proxy measures of the underlying questions they are unwilling

CBO: America Will Never See

The Congressional Budget Office is now projecting that the U.S. economy will never achieve full employment during the eight years Barack Obama serves as president. That would make Obama the only American president during the post-World War II era who never presided over a year in which the U.S. economy offered full employment to the American people. The CBO defines “full employment” to be when the national unemployment rate is at or below what it calls the “natural unemployment rate.” The natural unemployment rate, according to CBO, is the “rate of unemployment arising from all sources except

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney mocked the idea that partisan ambitions motivated the decision to use the Obamacare application to register new voters. “The linkage of checking off whether you want to register to vote goes back to a 1993 law regarding Medicaid,” Carney said, after asking that Republicans concerned that the application might function as a Democratic voter registration tool plan to disown recipients of Medicaid. “As a separate measure, I’m not sure that it’s such a terrible thing that people might want to register to vote.”

ISNA issues a bi-monthly publication titled Islamic Horizons. At face value, the magazine seems innocuous. However, it is filled with features and advertisements linked to radical Islamic thought and activity. A feature story from the January/February 2013 issue covers the life of Nihad Awad, and

Nike released this ad shortly after Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and re-ascended to the No. 1 ranking in the world on Monday. Some people found the ad to be a bit -- controversial. But the slogan "winning takes care of everything" was something Woods himself said during the Tour Championship last year. The quote was a semi-response to Greg Norman saying earlier that week that Woods was intimidated by Rory McIlroy. Woods said during the Tour Championship that he was just taking care of his own business and not worrying about

Today the Supreme Court will hear arguments on California’s Proposition 8. Tomorrow it will hear a related case involving the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Each defines marriage as a union between a man and woman. The question is whether the court will use the cases to discover a right to same-sex marriage. We hope they choose a more modest path. What does that mean? At its heart, it means trusting the American people acting through their elected representatives at the state level. The reasons are both practical and constitutional.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the law creating the nation´s broadest school voucher program, clearing the way for a possible expansion. In a 5-0 vote, the justices rejected claims that the law primarily benefited religious institutions that run private schools and accepted arguments that it gave families choice and allowed parents to determine where the money went. The court said the law did not violate the state constitution´s guarantee of religious freedom or a ban on the use of state funds for religious institutions. As word streams out from those inside the Supreme Court hearing on California´s ban on gay marriage, it´s now being reported that the Proposition 8 ban will likely not be struck down by justices — and that the key justice, Anthony Kennedy, may push for the Court to dismiss Prop. 8, one of two cases on the same-sex marriage issue being heard this week. This whole thing might end up being one big tease. The ruling itself likely won´t come until June, of course, and a lot of this

This month, I spoke at an event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Watergate scandal with some of its survivors at the National Press Club. {Snip} From unilateral military actions to warrantless surveillance that were key parts of the basis for Nixon´s impending impeachment, the painful fact is that Barack Obama is the president that Nixon always wanted to be. In 2013, Obama wields those very same powers openly and without serious opposition.

SANFORD -- For the first time, we are hearing from the teenager believed to be the last person to talk to Trayvon Martin moments before his deadly confrontation with George Zimmerman. The teen, known only as "Witness 8," is considered to be the prosecution´s key witness, but Zimmerman´s attorneys said she lied during a deposition by the Martin family´s attorney, Benjamin Crump. A new motion filed Monday said the state knew Witness 8, said to be a girlfriend of Trayvon Martin´s from Miami, had been lying, but never came out with it.
