America’s massive and well-funded environmental industry is always in need of new worlds to conquer, or at least to attack with broom and dustpan. But the irony behind the modern-day environmental movement in America is that the more successful the movement is, the more petty subsequent goals necessarily become. There is no other choice. The big environmental organizations have mouths to feed and rents to pay just like any other business. They’re not going to offer up an attaboy to the nation and close up shop just because America has reached a level of environmental purity

I have collected unemployment three times in my life. The first time was over 35 years ago and I had to file a claim at an unemployment office in Manhattan. I also had to go there every week to collect a check. The second time was in 1995 when I was laid off and replaced by the owner´s wife. I then applied in person but after that I only had to report by phone and punch in my responses. The last time I filed was in 2008 when my newspaper folded and all I had to do was file online.

Remember the Fort Hood massacre? It occurred in early November of 2009, when Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people on a military base. Three and half years later, the military still has not tried Hasan. Not that a trial of his guilt or innocence is necessary. Hasan asked, through his attorney, to plead guilty to 13 counts of premeditated murder. However, Army rules prohibit a judge from accepting a guilty plea to charges that carry the death penalty. Hasan then tried to plead guilty to 13 counts of unpremeditated murder. No dice.

A conservative black leadership network, Project 21, condemned both the race-based defense strategy and also the media coverage of the murder trial of Philadelphia abortion provider Dr. Kermit Gosnell, charging that by trying to hold Gosnell’s West Philadelphia clinic to lower standards than abortion providers, Gosnell’s lawyers are setting a dangerous precedent for abortion clinics in African-American communities across the country. Gosnell, who is charged with seven counts of first-degree murder for allegedly killing live babies, and third-degree murder for the alleged over-anesthetization of patient Karnamaya Mongar, appears ready to make the case a racial issue.

The hunt has begun for a total stranger who reduced a serviceman´s wife to tears with a heartwarming act of kindness that sparked almost two million fans online after a picture of the deed was placed on the Internet. On Sunday, Samantha Ford, whose boyfriend is serving in Afghanistan walked out of a Dunkin Donuts to discover a white envelope under her windshield wiper. Initially she cursed her luck, thinking she had got a ticket, but after putting her two kids in the back of the car she sat down at the wheel and opened the letter--to find two

Harry Reid, welcome to the black helicopter crowd. “When you go to registration, it raises all the black helicopter crowd notion that what this is all about is identifying who has a gun so that one day the government can get up and go to the house and arrest everyone who has a gun, and they’ll cite Nazi Germany and all that,” Biden told NPR Wednesday. Paraphrase: Opposition to President Barack Obama’s gun agenda automatically makes you a conspiracy nut. But if that’s true, a lot of Democrats must be receiving messages via their dental fillings. This weekend marks the third anniversary of Obama’s signature achievement, the healthcare bill named the “Affordable Care Act,” better known as Obamacare. At the time of the bill’s passage the New York Times called it an “attack on wealth inequality,” and unsurprisingly the paper was full-throated in its support of the president and his agenda. Now that the bill is safely passed and its namesake has been reelected, the Times small business section has come to a shocking realization: Obamacare is going to very seriously, and very negatively, impact small businesses. In two separate stories on their homepage

In 1798, when John Adams was president of the United States, the feds enacted four pieces of legislation called the Alien and Sedition Acts. (Snip)When FBI agents serve the warrants they’ve written for themselves — the NSLs, as they call them — they tell the recipient of the warrant that he or she will commit a felony if he or she tells anyone — be it a lawyer, a judge, a spouse, a priest in the confessional — of the receipt of the warrant. . Just because things can be put on the same list doesn’t mean they are necessarily similar. My attic contains within it thousands of comic books, an inflatable bed, a few jigsaw puzzles, some family pictures, and a Frampton Comes Alive! album. These things are, roughly speaking, in the same location, but they’re hardly of equal value, importance, or utility. I bring this up for the simple reason that we’re hearing a lot about how the GOP must deal with “abortion and gay marriage” as if they are almost the same issue. Well, in my house, I hear about my dog

So U.S. Sen. Granny Warren has now hired a big-time literary agent to peddle her memoirs, and the working title is “Rigged.” Rigged? Surely some mistake — wouldn’t “Hammered” be a much more appropriate title? Or even better, “Faked.” Somewhere, Scott Brown is shaking his head. Because he knows that the same nastiness and cheap shots that he endured after his million-dollar payday for “Against All Odds” will not be leveled against the author of “Hammered,” er, I mean, “Faked.” The reason is very simple. The fake Indian is a Democrat. Scott Brown is a Republican.

A gun manufacturer has threatened to relocate its headquarters outside Connecticut if the state tightens up its gun laws after the December mass shooting at one of its elementary schools. Dennis Veilleux, CEO of Colt´s Manufacturing Co., which is based in West Hartford, warned that he would take his business elsewhere if Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy doesn´t stop pursuing a ban on semiautomatic weapons like the kind Adam Lanza used to kill 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown. ´A ban of the most popular semiautomatic rifle in the United States for what are essentially cosmetic reasons would

Since just after his reelection last year, Barack Obama´s job approval rating has dropped 8 points, according to a poll from Pew. Forty-seven percent approve of Obama´s job, down from 55 percent in December. Americans´ economic outlook has soured, too. Here´s more from Pew: Yet the survey also finds that large percentages of Americans – particularly those with lower family incomes – continue to face severe economic and job-related problems. Nearly three-in-ten (28%) say they have had trouble getting or paying for medical care in the last year, while nearly as many (23%)

A former Obama admninistration official gets right down to it on drone warfare overseas. It´s not just that it´s extralegal, unconstitutional, et cetera. It´s that dropping so many weapons on the local people -- even so-called precision ones -- is dumb and counter-productive: CHICAGO — A former top adviser to President Obama on Thursday expressed concern about “blowback” from the United States’ aggressive campaign of drone strikes, warning that the attacks could be undermining long-term efforts to battle extremism. The former adviser, Gen. James E. Cartwright, is the latest and perhaps the most influential former member

US President Barack Obama came with a desire to inspire. As at home, he reached over the heads of the politicians to the people. He has made a clever speech invoking passion, morality and Jewish history to argue for a new peace process. But cynics may note no-one doubts he is good with words. Good at painting a big, visionary picture. [Snip] No president wants this idea--the two-state solution--to die on his watch. So a bit of energetic, over-optimistic resuscitation cannot do him any harm, even if the patient does pass away.

On Monday, Harry Reid told a disappointed Dianne Feinstein that her assault weapons ban, which passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote, wouldn´t be in the gun control legislation Democrats are preparing for the full Senate because it had insufficient support to get past a filibuster. But Thursday night, Reid said in a statement, "I will ensure that a ban on assault weapons, limits to high-capacity magazines, and mental health provisions receive votes" as amendments to the bill. The bill moving forward now will include the provisions on background checks, school safety,

The city of Chicago plans to close more than 60 schools, in one of the largest mass school shutdowns in US history. The move, which would affect about one in ten schools, is an effort to plug a $1bn (£659m) budget shortfall and address declining enrolment. Parents fear their children will be displaced from familiar neighbourhood schools and forced to commute longer through dangerous areas of the city. The city board of education will take a final vote on the proposals in May. About 30,000 students out of 403,000 would be affected by the changes.

The numbers are stark: of President Obama’s nine new Cabinet appointments, three are women and one is Hispanic. This has prompted African-Americans, who voted for Obama in record numbers, to question whether they are getting their fair share of representation. Ohio Democrat Marcia Fudge, who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus, sent Obama a letter last week saying that his appointments “have hardly been reflective of this country’s diversity.” She noted numerous phone calls from constituents to the offices of the CBC’s 42 members “questioning why none of the new appointees will be able to speak

Three people have died after a gunman killed two Marines before shooting himself at a base in the United States. A stand-off between authorities and the suspect at Marine Base Quantico in Virginia began at around 11pm last night after a shooting which left one person dead. The suspect was barricaded in the barracks at the base and was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound earlier today along with the second victim. No names have been released but both victims were Marines, according to Lt. Agustin Solivan. Authorities believe the suspect was a staff member at the officer candidate

T he public has all but forgotten the U.S. Secret Service´s Colombian prostitute scandal, but the past 24 hours have probably dredged up bad memories for the agency´s PR department. One Secret Service agent traveling with President Obama in Israel is in hot water for reportedly junking the president´s heavily fortified limousine by filling it with diesel instead of gas ("This is why we bring multiple vehicles and a mechanic on all trips," says agency spokesman Brian Leary.) Hours later, The Atlantic published a short but eye-catching excerpt from Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry,

Has any president ever shown such a complete change of position on a central matter of American foreign policy as Barack Obama has this week in relation to Israel and the Palestinians? Obama took office in 2009 determined to alter the American relationship with Israel as part of an overall reset in US Mideast policy. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he basically said: Nah, forget it. Back to Bush. Oh, he had a press conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and he told an audience of wildly enthusiastic (and presumably rather carefully selected) Israeli students

For rogue regimes to threaten America and its allies is nothing new. But I have the distinct sense these days that the threats are both prolific and becoming more boldly specific. North Korea isn’t just making its usual threats to drown South Korea in a sea of fire. Pyongyang has been cranking out cheesy videos depicting missile attacks on Washington, and just threatened to attack American military bases in Japan and on Guam. Iran’s rulers are not only expressing their usual generic wish to wipe Israel off the map. Iran’s top boss, a.k.a. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,

MARCO RUBIO, in an interview for “Behind the Curtain,” on the likelihood of immigration reform going to President Obama’s desk this year – the first time Rubio has said this: “A lot of it is going to hinge on the viability of a guest worker program. There are elements in organized labor that don’t want one. I think, really, that’s going to become the critical issue in this debate … whether we can create a viable guest worker program that protects American workers, but also ensures that in the future

Former Pink Floyd bass player Roger Waters has asked fellow musicians to boycott Israel and asserted that the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel was "the most effective way to go." In an interview with The Electronic Intifada, Waters accused Israel of being an "apartheid regime," and said sanctions like those imposed in the past on South Africa are the only way to handle the situation in the Palestinian territories. Waters also told The Electronic Intifada that he is planning on publishing an open letter addressed to his musician colleagues worldwide,

The Massachusetts public school system has taken the tired mantra "You can be whatever you want to be" to new heights of absurdity. It is now possible for any student to declare what his sex is regardless of whether it is the biological opposite of what she was born as. (Snip) The basic premise is that a student has the right to decide what sex he or she is, and the school is required to support the child´s self-proclaimed identity in every respect. According to the aforementioned document, if a boy decides he is a girl, he is to be addressed as "she," and school records are to reflect his new preference

The licenses will still say “No Lawful Status.” The state will issue them to young adults brought illegally to the United States as children.
