President Obama gives
peace a chance
BBC News [UK], by Mark Mardell    Original Article

US President Barack Obama came with a desire to inspire. As at home, he reached over the heads of the politicians to the people. He has made a clever speech invoking passion, morality and Jewish history to argue for a new peace process. But cynics may note no-one doubts he is good with words. Good at painting a big, visionary picture. [Snip] No president wants this idea--the two-state solution--to die on his watch. So a bit of energetic, over-optimistic resuscitation cannot do him any harm, even if the patient does pass away.

On Monday, Harry Reid told a disappointed Dianne Feinstein that her assault weapons ban, which passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote, wouldn´t be in the gun control legislation Democrats are preparing for the full Senate because it had insufficient support to get past a filibuster. But Thursday night, Reid said in a statement, "I will ensure that a ban on assault weapons, limits to high-capacity magazines, and mental health provisions receive votes" as amendments to the bill. The bill moving forward now will include the provisions on background checks, school safety,

Chicago to close more than

The city of Chicago plans to close more than 60 schools, in one of the largest mass school shutdowns in US history. The move, which would affect about one in ten schools, is an effort to plug a $1bn (£659m) budget shortfall and address declining enrolment. Parents fear their children will be displaced from familiar neighbourhood schools and forced to commute longer through dangerous areas of the city. The city board of education will take a final vote on the proposals in May. About 30,000 students out of 403,000 would be affected by the changes.

The numbers are stark: of President Obama’s nine new Cabinet appointments, three are women and one is Hispanic. This has prompted African-Americans, who voted for Obama in record numbers, to question whether they are getting their fair share of representation. Ohio Democrat Marcia Fudge, who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus, sent Obama a letter last week saying that his appointments “have hardly been reflective of this country’s diversity.” She noted numerous phone calls from constituents to the offices of the CBC’s 42 members “questioning why none of the new appointees will be able to speak

Three people have died after a gunman killed two Marines before shooting himself at a base in the United States. A stand-off between authorities and the suspect at Marine Base Quantico in Virginia began at around 11pm last night after a shooting which left one person dead. The suspect was barricaded in the barracks at the base and was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound earlier today along with the second victim. No names have been released but both victims were Marines, according to Lt. Agustin Solivan. Authorities believe the suspect was a staff member at the officer candidate

T he public has all but forgotten the U.S. Secret Service´s Colombian prostitute scandal, but the past 24 hours have probably dredged up bad memories for the agency´s PR department. One Secret Service agent traveling with President Obama in Israel is in hot water for reportedly junking the president´s heavily fortified limousine by filling it with diesel instead of gas ("This is why we bring multiple vehicles and a mechanic on all trips," says agency spokesman Brian Leary.) Hours later, The Atlantic published a short but eye-catching excerpt from Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry,

Has any president ever shown such a complete change of position on a central matter of American foreign policy as Barack Obama has this week in relation to Israel and the Palestinians? Obama took office in 2009 determined to alter the American relationship with Israel as part of an overall reset in US Mideast policy. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he basically said: Nah, forget it. Back to Bush. Oh, he had a press conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and he told an audience of wildly enthusiastic (and presumably rather carefully selected) Israeli students

For rogue regimes to threaten America and its allies is nothing new. But I have the distinct sense these days that the threats are both prolific and becoming more boldly specific. North Korea isn’t just making its usual threats to drown South Korea in a sea of fire. Pyongyang has been cranking out cheesy videos depicting missile attacks on Washington, and just threatened to attack American military bases in Japan and on Guam. Iran’s rulers are not only expressing their usual generic wish to wipe Israel off the map. Iran’s top boss, a.k.a. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,

There are elements in organized labor that don’t want one. I think, really, that’s going to become the critical issue in this debate … whether we can create a viable guest worker program that protects American workers, but also ensures that in the future

Former Pink Floyd bass player Roger Waters has asked fellow musicians to boycott Israel and asserted that the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel was "the most effective way to go." In an interview with The Electronic Intifada, Waters accused Israel of being an "apartheid regime," and said sanctions like those imposed in the past on South Africa are the only way to handle the situation in the Palestinian territories. Waters also told The Electronic Intifada that he is planning on publishing an open letter addressed to his musician colleagues worldwide,

It is now possible for any student to declare what his sex is regardless of whether it is the biological opposite of what she was born as. (Snip) The basic premise is that a student has the right to decide what sex he or she is, and the school is required to support the child´s self-proclaimed identity in every respect. According to the aforementioned document, if a boy decides he is a girl, he is to be addressed as "she," and school records are to reflect his new preference

The Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., was on lockdown early Friday after an isolated shooting at the Officer Candidate School, the base said. The gunman was at large but surrounded. Base residents were ordered to stay inside and lock their doors. The threat level was boosted to FPCON Delta, the base said on its website and Facebook page. That threat level can describe an active shooter or a terrorist attack. The suspect, believed to be a male Marine, had barricaded himself at the base and was surrounded by police, the Marines said. Prince William County and military police had responded.

Washington — Despite growing awareness of hate crimes, the share of those crimes reported to police has fallen in recent years as more victims of violent attacks express doubt that police can or will help. Nearly 2 of 3 hate crimes go unreported to police, the Justice Department´s Bureau of Justice Statistics reported Thursday. For the years 2003-06, 46 percent of hate crimes were reported to police. But more recently, for 2007-11, just 35 percent were reported. There was an increase in the percentage of victims of violent hate crimes who didn´t report the crime because they believed the police

Senate Democrats said Thursday they will take up gun control immediately after a two-week Easter vacation, and said the bill they’ll bring to the chamber floor will include universal background checks for all firearms sales and a crackdown on gun trafficking and straw purchases. The background checks are the biggest sticking point — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he will include a strict measure written by Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, rather than wait for a bipartisan compromise to emerge.

A federal appeals court has ruled that Maryland can require concealed-carry handgun permit applicants to provide a “good and substantial reason” for wanting to carry a gun outside the home, leaving state officials feeling vindicated and Second Amendment advocates vowing to take the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion Thursday overturning a March 2012 U.S. District Court ruling that struck down the permit law as unconstitutional. The plaintiff in the case, Raymond Woollard, had argued that the state violated the Constitution when it denied renewal

Gun control will be the first order of business in the Senate when lawmakers return in April from their two-week holiday break. Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) formally moved a package of gun-related bills onto the legislative calendar Thursday night, setting up the most serious debate on gun control in Congress in more than a decade. While it will not include a ban on assault weapons — Reid said Tuesday that proposal has less than 40 Senate votes behind it — the package will include provisions for a universal background check system, stricter federal criminal laws

The proposition that entitlement curbs are the key to maintaining national solvency is widely accepted, though not by many congressional Democrats. President Obama, however, has endorsed it on various occasions. And he could make it happen. If he wants. I remain skeptical that he does. But national solvency is important enough to test this proposition at least once more. The obstacle is Obama’s current position that entitlement cuts must be “balanced” with new revenue from closing loopholes. Republicans are adamantly opposed. No more revenues, Mr. President. You got your tax hike on Jan. 1. Is there a solution?
