Chicago--Chicago school officials said Thursday that they plan to close dozens of schools in a bid to improve education and tackle a $1 billion deficit. The move would shutter 61 school buildings, including 53 underused schools and one program. The cut represents roughly 10% of all elementary school facilities in Chicago Public Schools, the country´s third-largest school district. "Every child in every neighborhood in Chicago deserves access to a high-quality education that prepares them to succeed in life, but for too long children in certain parts of Chicago have been cheated out of the resources they

The Senate and House budgets agree that this economy needs more growth and both predict the same growth levels — yet the Senate budget proposes higher spending, taxes, and debt than the House budget. Therein lies an opportunity for the GOP. Both the House and Senate have published their respective budget proposals. Predictably, Senate Democrats are proposing more spending and tax revenue than House Republicans, who in turn are proposing more deficit reduction than the Senate Democrats. According to Democrats, the House Republicans’ budget is a non-starter because it proposes too much

It occurred to me recently that President Obama and House Democrats managed to force ObamaCare onto the American people in just over 400 days. Yet, it´s been over 1,600 days since the application for the Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada was submitted to the State Department — and the administration continues to stall on approving or disapproving the project. In the case of ObamaCare, the administration acted quickly to ensure Congress passed legislation that then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi admitted needed passage before "we can find out what is in it." By contrast, the administration persists in delaying approval of

While attacks in the capital during Syria´s two-year-long rebellion have become almost commonplace, an attack on a mosque was deeply shocking to both sides in the conflict. The health ministry said at least 42 people had been killed in the blast at the Iman Mosque, with 84 wounded. State television said "terrorists", a term often used to describe the rebels, were behind the attack. But rebel spokesman Loay Maqdad said units associated with the opposition´s Free Syrian Army were not behind the attack. "We in the Free Syrian Army do not take any responsibility for this operation.

National Security: Saturday marks the 30th anniversary of perhaps the most consequential presidential announcement in history. But Reagan´s visionary SDI speech was about more than missile defense. It´s strangely appropriate that President Obama ends his trip to the Mideast, featuring an overdue visit to staunch U.S. ally Israel, with an outing Saturday to Jordan´s stunning ancient city of Petra. Carved into a rock face 2,000 years ago, Petra was a commercial crossroads linking southern Arabia, China and India with Egypt, Greece, Rome and Syria. The president visits this man-made embodiment of world history three decades to the day after a wiser predecessor

Do fewer guns mean fewer firearm deaths? If you believe the March 6th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association of Internal Medicine, the answer is "yes." A study by Eric Fleegler and four other co-authors received massive national news coverage from USA Today to the television networks. But the report is based on embarrassingly bad statistics that are rigged to get the result the authors wanted. Take how they measure gun ownership. Believe it or not, this study measures gun ownership by looking at the share of suicides committed using firearms.

Berlin - The euro currency union, a centerpiece of Europe’s efforts to knit its far-flung nations into a coherent whole, edged toward a rupture Thursday when the region’s central bank said it was ready to pull the plug on Cyprus. The stark ultimatum came in a terse statement Thursday from the European Central Bank’s governing board, which said that on Monday it would cut off the flow of euros to Cyprus’s struggling banks unless the country’s leaders reach agreement with the International Monetary Fund and other European nations on the terms of a $20.5 billion bailout to save their country from

Washington - The U.S. Postal Service must deliver the mail six days a week, said Congress´ watchdog arm in a Thursday legal opinion. The legal opinion from the nonpartisan agency throws new questions on the Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe´s plans to stop delivering first-class mail, but keep delivering packages and express mail on Saturdays. The U.S. Government Accountability Office stopped short of saying the U.S. Postal Service´s August plan to end most Saturday mail service violates current law. The U.S. Postal Service says it's not ending six-day delivery, only changing it,

DENVER — With a stroke of the governor’s pen, Colorado on Thursday legalized civil unions for same-sex couples, a major shift for a Western state where voters outlawed same-sex marriages in 2006. The law makes Colorado the 18th state to allow gay marriage or some form of same-sex union, and its signing comes days before the Supreme Court hears two major cases on marriage equality. (Snip) Even as Gov. John W. Hickenlooper signed the law, activists and gay couples acknowledged that it failed to grant full marriage equality to same-sex couples,

Washington — The decline of two-parent households may be a significant reason for the divergent fortunes of male workers, whose earnings generally declined in recent decades, and female workers, whose earnings generally increased, a prominent labor economist argues in a new survey of existing research. David H. Autor, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says that the difference between men and women, at least in part, may have roots in childhood. (Snip) In this telling, the economic struggles of male workers are both a cause and an effect of the breakdown of traditional

The United Nations will launch an investigation into Syrian claims that rebels used chemical weapons against its troops, even as U.S. officials told CNN Thursday that initial intelligence reports suggest no such weapons were used. The announcement follows days of claims by the Syrian government and rebel that the each used chemical weapons against the other side, allegations that have raised concern the ongoing civil war had entered a new, more deadly phase. U.S. President Barack Obama and other American officials have said in recent days there was no evidence to substantiate the reports that

The acting president and candidate for the April 14 elections for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Nicolás Maduro, said that "Venezuela, for nearly a century, was a colony of the gringo oil multinationals." He added that the country was looted by companies and by the bourgeoisie that "stole the money" from oil revenues. During an inspection of the Orinoco Oil Belt in Monagas state, east Venezuela, Maduro said that corporations "used to exploit workers and discriminated against Venezuelans." In this regard, he said he was confident that workers would defend the oil sector

JERUSALEM -- Insisting "peace is possible," President Barack Obama on Thursday prodded both Israelis and Palestinians to return to long-stalled negotiations with few, if any, pre-conditions, softening his earlier demands that Israel stop building settlements in disputed territory. The president made his appeal just hours after rockets fired from Hamas-controlled Gaza landed in a southern Israeli border town, a fresh reminder of the severe security risks and tensions that have stymied peace efforts for decades. Obama, on his second day in the Middle East, shuttled between Jerusalem and Ramallah, reaching out to the public as well as political leaders.

RUSH: Some people were asking me about Ben Carson last night. And I said, "Let me tell you what his secret is. People are not able to detect an agenda when Ben Carson speaks. That´s the magic." And it´s the same thing with Obama. Obama does not appear to have an agenda. At least people don´t attach an agenda to him. What that means is, people are not, therefore, automatically predisposed to being wary. People who have agendas, and those agendas are known, will automatically have people suspicious of them.

During an appearance on MSNBC this morning, Congressman Charlie Rangel was asked what he thought about the assault weapons ban being dropped from Senate bill. Rangel blamed the defeat on politics and money and then made the extraordinary claim that "millions of kids" are dying because they are "being shot down by assault weapons." I’m ashamed to admit it but its politics and its money, The NRA has taken this position, there is no reason, there is no foundation. There is no hunter that needs automatic military weapons to enjoy the culture of going hunting.

The Detroit News is busy talking up the possibility of Dr. Benjamin Carson running as a Republican for the Senate from Michigan. He could win the open seat race with Levin retiring. An African American, fresh face, who would win a higher percentage of the black vote than other Republicans. The state is 14% black. Republican Governor Rick Snyder won his race in 2010 by 18% (but he may go down this time), and Obama won the state by 10% in 2012. A Dem-leaning state for sure, but an off year electorate

Now and then truth emerges in surprising places, such as the pages of the New York Times and the work of Third Way, a goo-goo "moderate" Beltway think tank heretofore best known for its pioneering efforts in the crucially important sphere of seating arrangements. Today´s Times reports on a new Third Way study that is highly important--no sarcasm here--and that picks up on some of this column´s frequent themes. Here´s the abstract: A new gender gap has emerged--one where girls and young women outperform boys and young men in both education and key aspects of the workforce.

Paul, fresh off his win in the Conservative Political Action Conference presidential straw poll, specifically disagreed with the suggestion he is being “suckered” into an agreement with Democrats. “I’ve got a news flash for those who want to call people names on amnesty: What we have now is de facto amnesty,” Paul replied. “We have 11 million people here

The university, meanwhile, is defending the assignment as a lesson in debate. “I’m not going to be sitting in a class having my religious rights desecrated,” student Ryan Rotela told television station WPEC. “I truly see this as I’m being punished.” Rotela, who is a devout Mormon, said the instructor in his Intercultural Communications class told the students to write the name “Jesus” on a sheet of paper.

Barack Obama made an impassioned plea to Israel’s people over the heads of its government by calling on them to put themselves in the shoes of Palestinians and pressure the country’s political leadership to seek peace. In a speech deploying his full range of rhetorical gifts, the US president first cast himself as an unyielding friend of Israel before appealing to ordinary Israelis by asking them to recognise that Palestinians shared their hopes and aspirations, but were being denied the right of an independent state. Addressing an audience of around 1,000 students at Jerusalem’s International Convention Centre
