Obama’s Mix of Reality and Fantasy

President Obama continued his charm offensive with the people of Israel with his speech to an audience of students in Jerusalem that reaffirmed his support for Zionism and Israel’s “unbreakable” alliance with the United States. But however far he may have gone toward reassuring Israelis of his concern for their security during this trip, many of the headlines today will be devoted to the part of his address that attempted to prod the Jewish state to recommit to the peace process. The speech demonstrated that, despite the new warmth between Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu, there is still considerable distance

A second former high-ranking deputy in the Orleans Parish Sheriff´s Office pleaded guilty Thursday morning in federal court to a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery for an alleged bid-rigging and kickback scheme that is expected to produce more charges in the coming weeks or months. Former Col. Gerard Hoffman Jr., the director of maintenance in the sheriff´s office before he retired last summer, admitted taking $7,500 worth of kickbacks, including free electrical work and a trailer and storage container from a contractor identified in court documents only as "Businessman B." Obama´s Middle East policy in tatters

President Obama´s first journey to Israel as president comes amid earth-shattering change in Middle East, much of it for the worse. The Arab Spring, which once raised hopes of freedom and dignity, has diverged onto the dark path of Islamist authoritarian rule. In Syria, tens of thousands of people have died in a bitter civil war that might have recently seen its first use of chemical weapons. And Iran continues its march toward nuclear weapons capability, heedless of international condemnation. Obama´s effort to seek peace between Palestinians and Israelis is in tatters. That´s why the White House has been lowering expectations

Yet another new survey shows that Republican supporters know more about politics and political history than Democrats. On eight of 13 questions about politics, Republicans outscored Democrats by an average of 18 percentage points, according to a new Pew survey titled “Partisan Differences in Knowledge.” The Pew survey adds to a wave of surveys and studies showing that GOP-sympathizers are better informed, more intellectually consistent, more open-minded, more empathetic and more receptive to criticism than their fellow Americans who support the Democratic Party. “Republicans fare substantially better than Democrats on several questions in the survey,

Washington — The House gave final congressional approval Thursday (March 21) to a spending bill that could lead to forgiveness of outstanding federal disaster loans from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita for Metro New Orleans school districts, government offices and law enforcement agencies. Nearly, $500 million in loans are outstanding in Louisiana communities. The bill passed 318-109. The loan provisions were inserted into a $982 billion bill that funds the federal government for the remainder of the 2013 fiscal year. It passed the Senate Wednesday and is expected to be signed into law by President Barack Obama, thereby averting

Chicago — The nation´s most influential pediatrician´s group has endorsed gay marriage, saying a stable relationship between parents regardless of sexual orientation contributes to a child´s health and well-being. The American Academy of Pediatrics´ new policy, published online Thursday, cites research showing that the parents´ sexual orientation has no effect on a child´s development. Kids fare just as well in gay or straight families when they are nurturing and financially and emotionally stable, the academy says. JERUSALEM -- President Barack Obama delivered an impassioned appeal Thursday for Israel to recognize that compromise will be necessary to achieve lasting security and to take steps to reverse an "undertow" of international isolation that is worsened by its failure to make peace with the Palestinians. Militants again underscored Israel´s vulnerability by firing rockets into a southern border town. Obama declared anew that Israeli expansion of housing settlements in disputed territory only hinders chances for fruitful negotiations with the Palestinians, but he did not say as he has in the past that they must be halted.

In a stark contrast to his smooth-running public appearances with Israeli leaders, the US president found himself on the back foot when forced to address the issue after a 90-minute meeting with Mr Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Mr Obama said he had told Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel´s prime minister, that settlement expansion in east Jerusalem and the West Bank on land the Palestinians want for a future state was not "constructive" or "appropriate". But he did not repeat his previous call, issued in 2009, that building must cease, pleading instead for resumed

In one of the most egregious violations of American pretensions to an independent press, John Kerry conspired with the Boston Globe, Associated Press, and the Los Angeles Times organizations to set the ground rules for the long awaited release of his papers after his defeat in 2004. No one has revealed what the agreement was, but there had been eager anticipation by the public and news media punctuated by lies and promises by Kerry to release them for years before. Invoking the names of Sen. Ted Cruz and President Barack Obama, a Battleground Texas leader said Wednesday night in McAllen that it’s possible to turn the state from red to blue in the future. At opposite ends of the political spectrum, state field director Alex Steele used the contemporary political figures to illustrate Texas’ current political state — dominated by Republicans — and the potential waiting to be tapped for Democrats. Battleground Texas, a state and federal political action committee organized by Obama staffers, launched this month. The meeting with about 40 people at the Taco Palenque

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s 2012 presidential campaign was a slow-motion train wreck, capped off by his embarrassing brain freeze in a nationally televised debate. But as Perry mulls another presidential race in 2016, it’s striking that he was campaigning on many of the reforms that Republican Party leaders are now desperately pushing. Republicans have spent the past several months figuring out how to win over more Hispanic voters, moderating their tone on immigration, pitching education reform as a significant issue, and they have reaped the political benefits of challenging President Obama on balancing budgets and reforming entitlements.

New York´s Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo is rescinding his ban on 10-round magazines after realizing that most gun manufacturers don´t make magazines smaller than 10 rounds. His original restrictions were that no magazines holding more than seven rounds could be sold within the state, but he realized after-the-fact that such a rule turns into a de facto ban on almost every magazine manufactured. Speaking on March 20, Cuomo said the state needs to allow the sale of handgun and rifle magazines that hold 10 rounds, "but New Yorkers will still be required to

America is dedicated to the principles of human liberty, grounded in the truths expressed in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal and endowed with equal rights. As Abraham Lincoln once said, these permanent truths are “applicable to all men and all times.” Our founding fathers were steeped in the Judeo-Christian traditions.(Snip)CPAC speakers this past week and the RNC chair spent an extraordinary amount of time discussing reaching out to Hispanics and African Americans, yet did not say anything substantive about a larger group of voters — Americans with disabilities.

On February 20, 2013, Mattera caught up with Messina in Washington, D.C. “Do you think it’s unbecoming of the president to be constantly attacking Fox News and Rush Limbaugh?” Mattera asks. “I don’t think that’s what he’s doing,” says Messina, as a staffer tries to usher him away from Mattera.

Patients in the trial were in the late stages of the disease, and were either being treated with a drug called GM-CSF or the new virus. Sixteen percent of the patients in the group that got the virus, known as talimogene laherparepvec, saw their tumors shrink completely or partially for at least six months.

JERUSALEM -- President Barack Obama is telling Israelis that in the search for peace, they have "true partners" in Palestinian leaders Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president, and Salam Fayyad, the prime minister. Of course, Israel cannot be expected to negotiate with anyone who is dedicated to its destruction. But while I know you have had differences with the Palestinian Authority, I believe that you do have a true partner in President Abbas and Prime Minister Fayyad. Over the last few years, they have built institutions and maintained security on the West Bank in ways that

JERUSALEM - President Barack Obama appealed directly on Thursday to the Israeli people to put themselves in the shoes of stateless Palestinians and recognize that Jewish settlement activity in occupied territory hurts prospects for peace. In a showcase speech in Jerusalem to Israeli university students, Obama coupled his plea with an acknowledgement of the Jewish state´s security concerns in a region destabilized by the West´s nuclear standoff with Iran and civil war in Syria. But he urged Israel´s younger generation to demand that their politicians take risks for peace in an address interrupted frequently by applause,

Florida voters overwhelmingly would chose former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for president in 2016 over the state’s two highest profile Republicans, former Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio, a new poll shows. Mrs. Clinton leads Mr. Bush by a margin of 51 percent to 40 percent, and bests Mr. Rubio 52 percent to 41 percent, according to the results of a Quinnipiac University poll of registered voters released Thursday. Mrs. Clinton, a Democrat, also is viewed much more favorably than either man; 62 percent of the survey’s respondents view her favorably

RAMALLAH, West Bank – President Obama, visiting the Israeli-occupied West Bank, appeared to move closer to the Israeli position on Thursday regarding resumption of long-stalled peace talks with the Palestinians, stopping short of insisting on a halt to Israel’s settlement expansion as he had done early in his first term. Hours after rockets from the Palestinian enclave of Gaza hit southern Israel, Mr. Obama met with President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority on the second day of Mr. Obama’s Middle East trip, and challenged both sides to resume face-to-face talks, pledging the United States “would do our part.”

Reince Priebus was headed out of the office to lunch recently when he startled a co-worker by suddenly ripping photos off the wall. With all due respect to the GOP dignitaries that had been staring down at him, they were too obscure, too random, too outdated. It was time for some redecorating at the Republican National Committee headquarters, the chairman decreed. This week, Priebus’s communications director, Sean Spicer, completed a months-long quest to collect campaign posters from every GOP presidential ticket of the past three decades, autographed by the candidates.

The bipartisan 318-109 vote sends the measure to President Barack Obama to be signed into law. The measure would fund the day-to-day operating budgets of every Cabinet agency through Sept. 30, provide another $87 billion to fund overseas military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and maintain a pay freeze for federal workers.
