A New York family scored a huge payday when a small bowl, which they bought at a garage sale for $3, turned out to be a 1,000-year old Chinese piece that sold for $2.2 million at Sotheby’s yesterday. The family bought the rare bowl at the secondhand sale in 2007, and kept it sitting on their mantle for years, the auction house said. After becoming curious, the bargain hunters began consulting experts about the bowl. They finally brought the piece to Sotheby’s, which estimated it would sell for somewhere in the $200,000 to $300,000 range.

The US Federal Reserve has said that the economy has strengthened "moderately" but still needs stimulus measures to underpin recovery. In a statement after a two-day meeting, the Fed said it would keep its policy of buying $85bn a month of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. The Fed said it wanted to see signs of a long-term fall in unemployment. The statement said policymakers continued "to see downside risks to the economic outlook". The forecast for US economic growth this year was lowered slightly, with the Fed saying it expected the economy to grow by 2.3% to 2.8%

President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu had a light-hearted moment when Obama introduced his chief foreign policy speechwriter Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes. Pointing at Rhodes, Obama said to Netanyahu, "Just remember that anything offensive that I say, it´s because of him." Obama then pointed out that Ben´s brother, David, runs CBS News and has a "proud Jewish mother." Netanyahu quipped, "It sounds like a very incestuous relationship," "Not if you watch CBS News,"

The NFL has passed new rules banning running backs from lowering their helmets on defenders and scrapping the “Tuck Rule.” By a 31-to-1 vote, the league prohibited running backs from using their heads as battering rams against would-be tacklers. The rule change comes in the midst of a campaign for concussion prevention and player safety. The NFL hopes to avoid litigation by former players claiming their health has rapidly deteriorated due to the physical punishment of playing in the NFL. The helmet rule will certainly curb head injuries for

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid indicated Wednesday that immigration reform legislation could be coming to the Senate floor sooner than expected. After objecting to an amendment from Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley regarding immigration, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid explained that there would be time in the “near” future for work on immigration. “[T]he good news is that within the very near, foreseeable future — hopefully I can start it in that next work period because, we are going to start immigration legislation here on the floor,”

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg talks about her work outs in an interview with the Washington Post. “When I started, I looked like a survivor of Auschwitz,” she tells the paper. “Now I’m up to 20 push-ups.” The paper reports, "Ginsburg began using a personal trainer in 1999, after she was treated for colon cancer and her husband, Martin, who died in 2010, insisted that she hire someone to help her regain her strength. By the justice’s account, she was in bad shape after surgery and radiation." “I never thought I’d be able to do any of this,” said Ginsburg, who turned 80 on Friday and has survived a second bout with cancer since she began training all those years ago, this time in her pancreas. “I attribute my well-being to our meetings twice a week. It’s essential.”

During their joint press conference this afternoon in Jerusalem, President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mocked NBC’s Chuck Todd for asking too many questions. The two leaders dropped their own set of jokes to taunt Todd for asking at least five questions in a single sitting. “I want to follow up a little bit on the peace process. You began your term — first term, big fanfare — speaking to the Muslim world, the decision to have a Middle East envoy early, you said you weren’t going to let this slip to your second term.

WASHINGTON -President Obama’s healthcare law remains largely a mystery to most Americans, three years after the president signed it, a new survey shows. Today, nearly six in 10 Americans say they still don’t have enough information to understand how the Affordable Care Act will affect them. Ignorance about the law is even higher among Americans who stand to benefit most, with more than two-thirds of people without health insurance reporting they don’t have enough information, the poll from the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation found.

The University of Minnesota sold nearly $1 million in beer and wine at TCF Bank Stadium last year — and lost money. (Snip)How can anyone lose money selling beer at $7.25 a cup? (snip) The list of startup expenses that cut into the school’s beer profits ranged from extra security to $12,000 in plants to screen the A gate beer kiosk from the view of visitors to the Tribal Nations Plaza. The university brought in a dozen extra campus police officers, 10 more ushers and two security supervisors to keep tabs on the football crowds once the alcohol started flowing. The extra manpower cost almost $50,000, but police incidents actually went down at the stadium, compared to the previous dry season.

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed bills Wednesday that place new restrictions on firearms and signaled a change for Democrats who traditionally shied away from gun control debate in Colorado - a state with a moderate streak and pioneer tradition of gun ownership and self-reliance. Hickenlooper´s signature of the bills comes exactly eight months after dozens of people were shot in a movie theater in suburban Denver, and on the same day as the executive director of the state´s Corrections Department was shot and killed at his home.

McALLEN — A typical narcotics investigation at a quiet McAllen neighborhood led to the biggest heroin bust in the history of the police department. Monday afternoon, police seized 47 pounds of white heroin and 116 pounds of cocaine from an apartment in the 500 block of West Wichita, police Chief Victor Rodriguez said. At the scene, police arrested 20-year-old Jose Rolando Ocampo, an undocumented immigrant from the Mexican state of Michoacán. Ocampo was charged with one count of possession of cocaine and one count of possession of heroin. His bond was set at $1 million.

MONUMENT, Colo. — The executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections was shot and killed when he answered the front door of his house, and police are searching for the gunman and trying to figure out if the attack had anything to do with his position. Authorities are also looking for a dark-colored “boxy” car seen near the house of Tom Clements, 58, when he was shot around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Monument, north of Colorado Springs. The vehicle’s engine was running and a witness reported seeing one person driving away in the car.

Question for Glenn Beck: Is ‘That Guy’ who’s in Israel today with his own redesigned map of that beleaguered country truly a “fellow Christian”, as described by ‘The Bible’ mini-series co-producer Roma Downey now playing until Easter on the History Channel? Before the Twitter follow-up telling all to “relax”, because his Sunday night Twitter suggesting that Barack Obama looks an awful lot like actor Mehdi Ouzanni, who plays Satan in ‘ The Bible’, Beck, who’s been touting the mini-series as the most popular in television history, linked Obama and the series’ Satan as “exact” lookalikes.

Every single U.S. senator is expected later today to have to vote on whether the federal budget should be balanced, senior Senate aides tell me. The vote will be for support of an amendment to the Democratic budget, which is currently not balanced, and which will be debated on the Senate floor today, calling for it to be balanced. "Later today, every single Senator will be forced to go on the record about whether they want to balance the budget," a senior Senate aide tells me. "There will be no caveats, such as disallowing revenue increases. It will be a simple question: do you want to balance the budget—any way you desire—within the next 10 years, or not? If these Senators support this measure, it will effectively kill the Murray budget.

The Bolshoi Ballet has been mired in further controversy after a former soloist claimed female dancers were forced to sleep with wealthy patrons. Anastasia Volochkova accused the theatre´s general director of turning the company "into a giant brothel". Outspoken Volochkova, who has dabbled in TV talent and talk shows, was fired from the Bolshoi in 2003 for being too heavy. General director Anatoly Iksanov dismissed the claims as "ravings". Volochkova made the allegations during an interview on a television talk show in Russia on Sunday, later repeating them in a radio interview with Russian News Service.

The wealthy Florida eye doctor at the center of a scandal-laden relationship with Sen. Bob Menendez has also made moves to curry favor with President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Dr. Salomon Melgen paid $30,400 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2010 — when Menendez was chairman — to co-sponsor a fundraiser attended by Obama. During the DC-area event last summer, according to a Tuesday evening report by Politico, Melgen posed for multiple photos with the president and attempted to chat with him.

WASHINGTON — Citing figures indicating that more than 100,000 federal employees owe more than $1 billion in federal taxes, a House committee on Wednesday approved legislation that would require the firing of government workers who are “seriously tax delinquent.” The legislation, introduced by Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, advanced through the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. It now has to pass the full House to be implemented into law. “Most taxpayers file accurate tax returns and pay the taxes they owe on time, regardless of their income,” Chaffetz, a Republican, said during the hearing Wednesday. “Federal employees and individuals applying for federal employment should do the same.”

Caroline Glick describes President Obama’s trip to Israel as a “mysterious visit.” To her, the administration policy in the Middle East is a riddle wrapped inside an enigma. The is truth we don’t know why Obama is coming to Israel. The Obama administration has not indicated where its Israel policy is going. And Obama’s Republican opposition is in complete disarray on foreign policy and not in any position to push him to reveal his plans. Barry Rubin, also based in Israel, believes the president does have a long-term strategic goal.

Nearly three months after the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, we are still debating the place of guns in American society. That debate is not just about statistics and laws—it is about culture. In a recent appearance on PBS´s "NewsHour," Vice President Joe Biden admitted an assault weapons ban would do little to stop crime, but argued the weapons should still be banned if they don’t have “real utility either in terms of any sporting or self protection needs[.]” Here, Biden forgets a founding American principle: we permit the government to have guns, not the other way around.

Under California law, Octo can legitimately collect welfare for her and her 14 kids if she makes $119,000 or less in a calendar year, but if the allegation is true ...

Top homeland security officials told Congress Wednesday they still don’t have a way to effectively measure border security — a revelation that lawmakers said could doom the chances for passing an immigration legalization bill this year. Three years after the Obama administration scrapped the previous yardstick, which measured miles of the border under “operational control,” top Customs and Border Protection officials told Congress the new measure they’re working on won’t be ready for public use any time in the near future. The revelation stunned lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, who said that without a way to

The Department of Education’s sequester cuts are taking a brutal toll on federally-funded schools on Native American reservations, but the federal agency still found money to create a new six-figure job promoting “Educational Excellence for African-Americans.” School officials on reservations across Minnesota have begun making painful cuts to the current budget in anticipation of sequester cuts, adding students to classrooms, slashing course offerings and leaving vacant jobs unfilled, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. At least one reservation is considering shortening the school year to save money.

In 2011, I wrote about mass murder at Kermit Gosnell’s abortion “clinic”: From the Office of the District Attorney in Philadelphia: Viable babies were born*. Gosnell killed them by plunging scissors into their spinal cords. He taught his staff to do the same. This is a remarkable moment in American life: A man is killing actual living, gurgling, bouncing babies on an industrial scale – and it barely makes the papers. Had he plunged his scissors into the spinal cord of a Democrat politician in Arizona, then The New York Times, ABC, CBS, NBC and everyone else would
