Judge Overturns MO. Law
On Birth Control Coverage
Associated Press, by David A. Lieb    Original Article
Posted By: Desert Fox- 3/19/2013 10:44:49 AM     Post Reply
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A federal judge has struck down a Missouri law exempting moral objectors from mandatory birth control coverage because it conflicts with an insurance requirement under President Barrack Obama´s health care law. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Audrey Fleissig cites a provision in the U.S. Constitution declaring that federal laws take precedence over contradictory state laws. But Fleissig emphasized that she was taking no position on the merits of the Obama administration policy, which requires insurers to cover contraception at no additional cost to women.

A University of Central Florida student who pulled a dorm fire alarm in the middle of the night had a more sinister plan than sending students scurrying out into the night, authorities said. Campus police said Monday that 30-year-old James Oliver Seevakumaran — who shot himself in the head as officers arrived, before any other students were hurt — was armed with two guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a backpack filled with explosives and a plan to attack other students as they fled the seven-story dorm where he lived.

What’s going on in Cyprus should be Textbook Lesson 101 how Big Socialist Governments will always find new ways to rip off the Little People to continue their profligate lifestyles. Taking full advantage of the public they were elected to serve, Cyprus Parliament and their banks worked out the details of a fait accompli while folks went about their own business. In other words, the horse was already out of the barn before social media was able to tip off the masses. Does it surprise any that today the mainstream media is rife with stories

Kudos to The Post’s Eli Saslow for a vivid story in Sunday’s paper about the burgeoning federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and its impact on struggling Woonsocket, R.I. Because of the 2008-09 recession and new eligibility rules, SNAP enrollment has expanded to 47 million people, including a third of Woonsocket’s 40,000 residents. SNAP’s total cost in 2012 was $78 billion, triple the 2003 level. I read Saslow’s story with mixed feelings: pride in a generous nation that spends such sums to fight hunger; shame that economic conditions make it necessary to do so; and worry

Up against Charlie Crist (as a Democrat), Scott is down 12 points, 52-40; against former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, Scott is down 7 points, 44-37; in a rematch with 2010 Democratic candidate Alex Sink, he’s down 5 points, 45-40.

Sidney Blumenthal is a senior consigliere in the Clinton political machine, renowned as a ruthless hatchet man. His emails were hacked by an entity known as "Guccifer" and a tranche of emails was distributed to selected media over the weekend, according to thesmokinggun.com. It strikes me as odd that none of the confidential memoranda have been published yet by any of the media to which they have been distributed.

Transportation Security Administration inspectors forced a wounded Marine who lost both of his legs in an IED blast and who was in a wheelchair to remove his prosthetic legs at one point, and at another point to stand painfully on his legs while his wheelchair was examined, according to a complaint a congressman has registered with the TSA. Rep. Duncan Hunter said in his letter Monday that the Marine, who is still on active duty and showed TSA agents his military identification, was still forced to undergo that scrutiny.

Why is the U.S. funding higher education for its "Benedict Arnold ally" Pakistan when the Pentagon is cutting tuition assistance for American troops? That´s the question Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, asked as he prepared to introduce a bill Tuesday to give Pakistan aid the "sequester" treatment -- halting the money until U.S. tuition assistance is restored. "Why are we funding education programs for our Benedict Arnold ally when we can´t fund -- or don´t fund -- the education for our military? And to Pakistan of all places, where hatred for America is at its highest.

There were high expectations for Sen. Ted Cruz´s keynote address at CPAC 2013, and he delivered. As a young, passionate Hispanic who happens to be one of the most brilliant and accomplished constitutional experts and Supreme Court lawyers in the U.S. Senate in over half a century, Cruz poses a clear frustration for the left—and some in the Republican establishment as well. Cruz was a rock star at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Whenever anyone mentioned him in their remarks, the utterance was met with applause.

In a 2011 book, Cardinal Jorge Maria Bergoglio, the new Pope Francis, stated that parents have a right to raise their children in accordance with their religious beliefs and that sometimes when the government intervenes to deprive young people of that religious element, it can produce terrible consequences, including “cases like Nazism” whereby many students were indoctrinated with views alien to those espoused their parents. The book, in Spanish, is entitled Sobre El Cielo Y La Tierra (On Heaven and Earth), by Jorge Bergoglio and Abraham Skorka, the latter an Argentinan rabbi.

A new Pew report on the state of the media exposes one of the worst-kept secrets in politics: reporters are losing their power to frame presidential contests for the average citizen. “Campaign reporters were acting primarily as megaphones, rather than investigators, of the assertions put forward by the candidates and other political partisans,” according to the report. “Only about a quarter of statements in the media about the character and records of the presidential candidates originated with journalists in the 2012 race, while twice that many came from political partisans.” Here’s a look at how those 2012 numbers compared

The Catholic bishops of the United States are asking the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to do something concrete and effective--rather than merely symbolic—to repeal a regulation the administration has issued under Obamacare that will force Catholics and other Christians to act against their faith in purchasing or providing health-care plans that cover sterilizations, contraceptives, and abortion-inducing drugs. Last June, the bishops unanimously declared this regulation an “unjust and illegal mandate.” Since then, dozens of Catholic and Protestant private business owners, schools and non-profit organizations have sued the administration seeking to fully or partially

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $2.7 million to study why lesbians are at a higher “risk for hazardous drinking.” The University of Illinois has received grants since 2009 for its project, "Cumulative Stress and Hazardous Drinking in a Community of Adult Lesbians," which aims to develop “culturally sensitive” strategies to prevent lesbians from being drunks. “Studies using both probability and nonprobability samples provide ample evidence of lesbians´ vulnerability to hazardous drinking,” the grant’s description reads. “However, very little is known about the factors that increase lesbians´ risk for hazardous drinking.”

Deaths from Alzheimer´s and other forms of dementia have increased 68% from 2000 to 2010, according to the report being released today by the Alzheimer´s Association, an advocacy group. Meanwhile, deaths from heart disease, HIV/AIDS and stroke have declined. The numbers are taken from Medicare and Medicaid reports. Seven U.S. Marines were killed and at least seven wounded when a mortar exploded during a live-fire training exercise overnight at an Army munitions depot in the Nevada desert, military officials told NBC News. There were conflicting reports about what happened. According to one account, a 60-millimeter mortar shell exploded in a tube as Marines were preparing to fire it. Another account said that the shell exploded as Marines were picking it up to load it. The accident happened at Hawthorne Army Depot, a 147,000-acre ammunition storage and training facility just east of the California line.

If at fourth you don´t succeed, try, try again. President Obama is at it again this week, sending really warm wishes to Iran and its people on the occasion of their combination spring-New Year holiday, Nowruz. This is the fifth year Obama has extended the holiday hand of friendship to Iran, despite its ongoing nuclear weapons program and deep involvement in widespread terrorist activities. The Democrat has also gone out of his way to extend public sympathies to Iran.

The state’s higher education community claims that universities are the engine that will drive the state’s economic comeback and thus they deserve more state aid. And you see a lot of head-nodding in agreement among many lawmakers on that notion. But you won’t see a lot of GOP head nodding this week as a house budget subcommittee wants to whack the University of Michigan and Wayne State because they recently extended their contracts with some unions.

Conservative legend Phyllis Schlafly told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday that the Republican establishment had given America a series of losers as presidential candidates over the last two decades--and the last time they picked a winner, George W. Bush, he was a bigger spender than the Democrats. “Why is it that the establishment has given us this bunch of losers?” Schlafly said. “The establishment has given us a whole series of losers: Bob Dole and John McCain and Mitt Romney. "And even when they picked a winner--George W. Bush--they picked somebody who spent more than the Democrats,” she said.

Remember JFK standing before the throngs of Germans and declaring "Ich bin ein Berliner"? Now imagine Ben Bernanke standing before the throngs of Cypriots and declaring that he was a Cypriot, a Cypriot politician sticking his hand into your savings account. Or maybe it was the other way around. Maybe the Cypriots knew the short cut to Bernanke´s Quantitative Easing end game. They just bluntly proposed taking the money from the accounts rather than fiddle with the cover up of printing money and devaluing the currency in question. Quicker, shorter and to the point.

Having crossed the world to find ourselves stranded in a foreign airport, the communication barrier can often push us to breaking point. But as a collection of photographs proves, the stress of translation can just as easily manifest itself in hilarity. Visitors to airports across Asia captured some of the most ridiculous and humourous translations, posting their pictures of signs and labels on an online blog. The results include simple translations that have been worded perhaps more bluntly than we are used to--such as a row of seats reserved for the ´old, weak and pregnant´. Passengers at one airport

Fuming bodega owners yesterday insisted that the city’s latest anti-smoking push would snuff out up to 90 percent of their tobacco sales — costing them thousands of dollars a week in revenue while creating yet another black market for scofflaws. Kenny Patel, 32, a worker at the JaJa Deli on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, argued that Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to bar all tobacco-product displays, as well as the single-sale ban on cheap cigars and cigarillos, “will not stop people from smoking.” Meanwhile, hiding the merchandise will take a bite out of JaJa’s bottom line, he said, noting:
