Before I saw this morning’s news, I happened to be in the midst of Tom Stoppard’s fine trilogy of plays, The Coast of Utopia, about the different lives of such 19th-century Russian revolutionary intellectuals as Alexander Herzen and Mikhail Bakunin. The third play, Salvage, which begins in the Hampstead home of Herzen (I’m still reading it; its action may yet move to Paris or Geneva), contains the following remark from Herzen to his fellow-exiles about their English hosts: They invented personal liberty

BEAUFORT — In special elections like today’s 1st Congressional District primaries, turnout is almost certain to be light – about 30,000 voters, campaign officials speculate. With former Gov. Mark Sanford well in front of the GOP pack, according to most polls, the Republican able to join him in an expected runoff will have to turn out supporters at the polls en mass, according to advisers for the various campaigns. “There are some high schools in Texas where you have to get more votes to be student government president than what it will take to come in second place

Jean Stothert, a Republican candidate with the potential to become Omaha´s first female mayor, endured two assaults on her gender in the past week that one national observer said were among the most “disgusting” sexist attacks she had ever seen leveled at a woman politician. One assault came in the form of a T-shirt that depicted Stothert as a stripper on a pole. It came with a crude word pun that revolved around the words: “private sector.”

Liberal HBO “Real Time” host Bill Maher says he may leave California, due to the state’s high tax rate. “Liberals,” he said, during a recent broadcast,” you could actually lose me.” He made the comments during a panel discussion of current Capitol Hill budget policy that included the participation of MSNBCRachel Maddow, who blasted Rep. Paul Ryan’s proposal as beneficial to the rich. (Snip) Mr. Maher answered: “You know what? Rich people — I’m sure you’d agree with this — actually do pay the freight in this country.”

US President Barack Obama made a direct address to the people of Iran on Monday to mark the holiday of Nowruz. He said that he has offered Iran´s leaders a new relationship with the US if they will uphold international standards, especially concerning the country´s nuclear ambitions. "The people of Iran have paid a high and unnecessary price because of your leaders´ unwillingness to address this issue," Mr Obama said in the remarks released on the White House Youtube channel. Mr Obama reiterated that the US would be responsive if the Iranian government took steps to reduce tensions

The Republican National Committee’s support of Senator Rob Portman’s flip on gay marriage has infuriated social conservatives. Though they don’t doubt that RNC chairman Reince Priebus is on their side, some say his vocal praise on Monday of Portman’s new stance could alienate values voters. “I think [the RNC] should pretty much ignore him,” says Phyllis Schlafly, a longtime conservative activist, in an interview with National Review Online. “I think he has made a mistake, and he probably won’t get reelected.”

An oak tree that for 30 years has stood as a "sentinel" for a planned memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. is struggling to survive, but the reason remains a mystery. Metro spokesman Jerome Gray said that over the weekend crews removed dead leaves from the live oak, known as the Memorial Tree, "and noticed some new green buds from the top. Crews are watering the tree and it will probably take a couple of weeks to determine if new growth is occurring." Last spring, Houston community activist Ovide Duncantell tied himself to the tree,

"If ever the mainstream media reaches a point where they recognize that if we destroy this nation and destroy the economy, they, too, will be destroyed, I think at that point they will start asking the tough questions and helping to move the population in the right direction." So predicted Dr. Benjamin Carson on Fox News´s Hannity Monday (video follows with transcript and commentary): DR. BENJAMIN CARSON: It seems like what the President is doing is trying to cut in the places where it hurts the most in order to prove a point.

Here´s what Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) learned from questioning Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) about the constitutionality of her "assault weapons" ban. She´s out of estrogen and she used to have a gun. Feinstein came armed with a scowl and a ruler when she confronted Cruz at the Constitution Corral. The outcome was so not OK for her. You can watch their exchange over S. 150 during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last Thursday. Feinstein actually objected when Cruz referred to her "ban" of certain weapons even though her bill title is the "Assault Weapons Ban of 2013."

It’s clear what Republicans need to do to take back the Senate in 2014: stop blowing races they should win, knock off some wobbly Democrats and break a string of bad luck. That’s no small order. To erase Democrats’ 55-45 advantage, the GOP needs to net six seats. There are seven states now represented by Democrats that Mitt Romney won last year. Republicans need to carry most of them, and retirements in West Virginia and likely South Dakota help. But they can’t count on running the table in red states. Republicans also must compete in places

One day, I was explaining the tension between modernity and fidelity to orthodox Christianity and the implications of that discord to an intern. Nodding along, she interrupted my eloquent lecture: “Yeah, it’s like, we go to church, but we also watch The Daily Show.” Exactly. The troublesome relationship between Christianity and its cultural surroundings is nothing new. A chunk of the New Testament is devoted to instructions for churches in Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi and Rome struggling to figure out what it means, exactly, to be “Christian.” Two-thousand years later, the Church continues to struggle with similar questions, albeit with a twist.

The Department of Justice whistleblower who resigned over the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation case said President Barack Obama’s labor secretary nominee Thomas Perez is the “most extreme cabinet nominee in 70 years.” J. Christian Adams, who worked for Perez at the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, sent a stern warning to the U.S. Senate about Perez’s policies. “Different business groups who don’t think the nominee matters should pay close attention to Perez’s record,” Adams said in an interview with the Washington Free Beacon. “People like Perez are very skillful at creatively ignoring the law to suit their own ends.”

A fight over President Obama’s use of executive privilege on the documents that led to Attorney General Eric Holder’s contempt charges is increasingly likely to be decided in court. The way the court decides could drastically limit congressional subpoena powers — or curb the extent to which the president can claim executive privilege. For the time being, House Republicans and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are about to launch into court-ordered mediations to reach a settlement. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson shot down the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s efforts to avoid mediation,

TAMPA, Fla. — The trustee overseeing Casey Anthony’s bankruptcy case has filed a motion to sell the rights to her story so she can pay her debts. In a motion filed Friday in federal court in Tampa, trustee Stephen Meininger asked Judge K. Rodney May for permission to sell the “exclusive worldwide rights” of Anthony’s life story. Anthony, who is now 26, was acquitted of murder in the death her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony has never told her side of the story, despite intense media scrutiny of the case. The Obama administration’s fear of blowback in Syria — weapons falling into the hands of jihadists and other bad guys — can be avoided in only one sure way: Throw America’s support behind Bashar al-Assad , the vile dictator the White House wants gone. This contradiction is at the heart of President Obama’s incoherent Syria policy. If Assad loses, it will be the Middle East version of Black Friday, with door-busting sales on all the latest weapons, batteries included. If he wins, the door remains closed. But we don’t want him to win — and the way it’s looking, he won’t.

Remember the medieval fable about the mice that wanted their dangerous enemy, the cat, belled, but each preferred not to be the one to attempt the dangerous deed? Likewise, the world’s bad actors have long wanted America belled, but, like the mice, so far they have not been stupid or daring enough to test America’s teeth and claws — that is, until now. In 2008 Barack Obama campaigned on the general principle that the entire Bush-Cheney anti-terrorism protocols were either superfluous or illegal. That opportunistic posturing resonated with a world audience eager for confessions of American wrongdoing.

President Obama stopped by Argonne National Laboratory in his Chicago hometown on Friday to demand Americans hand over another $2 billion in subsidies for electric cars. Liberals love trading in sensible sedans for these trendy “green” golf carts. Being seen behind the wheel of a quirky looking hybrid tells the world that “I care” about the environment. Such motorists just don’t care enough to use their own money. So Mr. Obama seeks another cash infusion for “what should be our top priority as a nation.” It’s not as if Uncle Sam has been ignoring the toy cars.

Thanks to a few ill-advised cable news broadcasts the world now knows the name of the Steubenville rape victim, but don´t even think about sending her any intimidating messages — unless you want to go to jail. If that´s the case, a simple tweet or two will do. Facebook works, too. Around 24 hours after the guilty verdict was delivered in juvenile court, police started taking aim at the batch of trolls trying to harass the girl that was raped by Trent Mays and Ma´lik Richmond last summer. They arrested two Ohio girls who threatened the victim on Twitter and Facebook.

Palestinians in Bethlehem set fire to pictures of US President Barack Obama on Monday, saying he was not welcome in their city. Scores of protesters gathered near Manger Square and threw shoes at a US diplomatic vehicle as it arrived at the scene as part of preparations for Obama’s visit to the city later this week. The protesters also set fire to signs posted in the city earlier this week reminding Obama that Palestinians still don’t have 3G communications technology. Similar anti-Obama demonstrations are expected to take place in Ramallah and other Palestinian cities in the coming days.

The Republican National Committee issued a remarkable document yesterday — unprecedented in the depth of its self-criticism and the rapidity with which it was issued in the wake of a disappointing election result five months ago. Or is it? Does the report represent a truly honest internal examination of the party’s soul — or is it mainly a not-so-veiled attack by Establishment Republicans on conservative ideas, conservative voters and conservative organizations? In fact, it’s both. The “Growth and Opportunity Project” takes a meat cleaver to the GOP. The party is strong at the state level, it says, with its 30 Republican governors.

“Isn’t it a strange thing that in every period of social unrest men have the notion that they can pass a law and suspend the operation of economic law?” — Calvin Coolidge, as quoted in Amity Shlaes’ new biography. If you ever wanted to destroy America from within, Dr. Ben Carson has assembled a handy four-point plan to accomplish just that, which he discussed at CPAC this past weekend: Dr. Ben Carson’s address to CPAC 2013 included his thoughts about how, if he were an enemy of America, he would set about destroying her.

It’s difficult to know exactly how many abortions — voluntary or otherwise — have been performed in China to get everyone to comply with their notorious one-child policy, because a lot of this stuff occurs off the grid and under the radar — but China’s health ministry just revealed their four-decade tally of 336 million (and I’d rely on this being a very low-ball estimate): The figure illustrates the enormous impact that the one-child policy has had on China in the four decades since it began. Official statistics showed that in addition

Salena Zito argues Obama sees his legacy as expanding the power of the Presidency–authority to order drones strikes, etc.. I suspect Obama is indeed pursuing a legacy of lasting power–he’d be foolish not to– but why shouldn’t it be power to get done what Obama wants to get done, as opposed to what his presidential successors want to get done? Does he want to empower Ted Cruz? If you look at it this way, the first two pillars of Obama’s ongoing power legacy are: 1) Organizing for Action–if it works (and it might), it’s a permanent independent power base,

WASHINGTON -- A staggering 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer´s disease or other types of dementia, says a new report that highlights the impact the mind-destroying disease is having on the rapidly aging population. Dying with Alzheimer´s is not the same as dying from it. But even when dementia isn´t the direct cause of death, it can be the final blow - speeding someone´s decline by interfering with their care for heart disease, cancer or other serious illnesses. That´s the assessment of the report released Tuesday by the Alzheimer´s Association, which advocates for more research and support
