The much-heralded ferry service between Oakland and South San Francisco — launched just nine months ago at a cost to taxpayers of more than $42 million — is taking on water fast. The service, which operates seven trips each weekday, carried an average of just 131 total riders a day in the last week of February. That’s less than a third of the ridership that officials were counting on during the ferries’ first year on the bay. And yet, rather than retrenching, the ferry operators have big plans for expansion. You can find out about those here.

WASHINGTON -- California´s jobless rate was unchanged at 9.8% in January, and that lack of improvement put the Golden State in a tie with Rhode Island for the worst unemployment in the land. On the other end of the spectrum, North Dakota had the lowest jobless rate, 3.3%, the government said Monday in releasing updated and revised employment data for all 50 states. These statistics, based on more complete payroll information, show that California and other states in the western half of the country did much better in job growth over the last 12 months, powered by the energy sector

“Do the media…bear any responsibility for the Republican Party’s image?” Thus was the question Fox News host Jon Scott posed to his panel on Monday. In light of the RNC’s so-called autopsy report, the discussion questioned whether the media has focused too much on the Republican Party’s negative side. Alan Colmes wasn’t on board with blaming the media for the party’s own troubles. Remarking on RNC chair Reince Priebus‘ “candid” assessment of the GOP’s problems, Colmes said if Democrats had made some of the infamous comments some Republican candidates did, the press would have gone after them too.

Some rescue. Brussels has thrown a financial lifeline to Cyprus - but in the process has threatened to scuttle the island, the global recovery and even the euro project itself. It’s a measure of the mishandling that this drop of an economy, just 1.1m people and 0.2pc of eurozone GDP, has been able to trigger such a tsunami. The €10bn (£8.6bn) bail-out plan--pocket change compared to funds sunk into Greece, Ireland and Portugal--has engulfed global markets, wiping billions from the value of companies around the world, particularly the fragile banks. It has flooded the minds of investors, bond

When conservatives complain about the harm that the endless debate schedule had on the 2012 Republican primary candidates, the conversation often turns to the hosts and the moderators. Why are Republican candidates letting someone like ABC’s George Stephanopoulos — a former aide to Democrat Bill Clinton — ask them “gotcha questions” during a GOP primary? Why are GOP presidential hopefuls agreeing to meet for a debate hosted by an outlet like MSNBC, a cable network that has increasingly grown hostile to Republicans as it self-identifies as a liberal news network?

Last week, White House press secretary Jay Carney lashed out at a Fox News anchor for asking whether the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll might go the way of its cancelled tours. Carney told Jenna Lee that the event wasn’t at risk: “Well actually, Jenna, again, if you did a little reporting . . . it’s paid for by the sale of those eggs that come out, as well as from donations on the outside, so it’s a totally different budget. These are apples and oranges.” But now, the White House is warning that this year’s egg roll

Sacramento -California public schools would be required to allow transgender students to use school facilities and participate in activities and on sports teams that match their gender identity under a bill introduced at the Capitol. State law already prohibits schools from discriminating on the basis of gender identity, but backers of the measure, AB1266, say some schools and school districts don´t provide access to restrooms, locker rooms or sports teams that align with the identity of transgender students. The bill would make it clear that the law requires that, they said. "Transgender boys are boys, and transgender girls are girls,

An attempt to illegally obtain absentee ballots in Florida last year is the first known case in the U.S. of a cyberattack against an online election system, according to computer scientists and lawyers working to safeguard voting security. The case involved more than 2,500 “phantom requests” for absentee ballots, apparently sent to the Miami-Dade County elections website using a computer program, according to a grand jury report on problems in the Aug. 14 primary election. It is not clear whether the bogus requests were an attempt to influence a specific race, test the system or simply interfere with the voting.

The Washington Post runs a lengthy front-page article in its March 18 edition about President Obama´s trip to lsrael, stressing his need to correct missteps in his first term when he applied one-sided pressure on Israel that spawned tense relations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ("Obama´s trip to Israel aims to fix missteps" by Scott Wilson). In his article, Wilson, a former Post Jerusalem correspondent, also highlights Obama´s mistaken view in his 2009 Cairo speech to the Muslim world that the Jewish state is rooted in the Holocaust and European persecution -- overlooking biblical ties to the land

House Democrats on Monday unveiled a 2014 budget proposal that includes $1.2 trillion in new taxes and $200 billion in stimulus spending. That´s about twice the level of stimulus spending that what was in the Senate Democratic budget, which included $975 million in new taxes. House Republicans have a budget that would lower tax rates and cut spending by $5.7 trillion compared to the Congressional Budget Office baseline. The House Democratic budget, authored by Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), would raise $1.2 trillion in revenue over ten years by ending tax breaks for both

Appearing on Inside Washington this weekend, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer branded Sen. Rand Paul‘s recent moves as “politically radical” and called him “socially liberal” — terms which are undoubtedly damned in Krauthammer’s mind, despite the latter being patently false. The roundtable show played a clip of Paul’s CPAC 2013 speech, in which he decried President Obama having signed the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act and its controversial “indefinite detention” provision which allows the government to detain an American citizen indefinitely without charges. “This is what libertarians are like,” Krauthammer reacted. “This is what his dad was like.

Last night´s installment of The History Channel´s The Bible featured a Moroccan actor who bears a passing resemblance to President Barack Obama, or so some online outlets insist. The production´s executive producers, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, quickly answered those who thought the casting of actor Mehdi Ouazzani was meant to slight the president. They released this statement today to refute those charges and defend their product. “HISTORY channel has the highest respect for President Obama. The series was produced with an international and diverse cast of respected actors. It´s unfortunate that anyone made this false connection.

Michael Steele, former Republican National Committee chairman, is hitting back at Reince Priebus, the current RNC chairman, on Monday after he took a jab at Steele for leaving him with a broken and bankrupt Republican Party in 2011. Steele fired back at Priebus by noting that he won the elections he was charged with winning whereas Priebus failed in that task. In a speech to the National Press Club, Priebus took a swipe at Steele saying that “both credit cards were suspended” when he took over as the party’s chairman in 2011. When asked if Steele “ruined the party” as chairman, Priebus replied, “I think the numbers speak

On Sunday, the Steubenville rape trial concluded with the judge finding two high school football players — Trent Mays, 17, and Ma’lik Richmond, 16 — guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl. The case itself has received a widespread coverage, but after the verdict was handed down, CNN became part of the story due to reporting “sympathetic” with the accused. A petition, with more than 30,000 signatures, is asking for a public apology from the network. The petition criticizes the network for “sympathizing” with the rapists rather than the victim:

In a new report released today, the Republican National Committee owned up to a number of mistakes made during the 2012 election cycle. While the central party admitted there were too many presidential debates, it only barely touched on the role that unfair media moderators played in both the nominating process and in the general election. Despite its reluctance to criticize media impartiality, the RNC report did open the door to the creation of a new organization that would be assigned to create and host the debates apart from the media.

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) ruled out tax increases in a future budget deal with President Obama, telling NBC’s David Gregory that the president would “get nothing” from the GOP on taxes. In a dispute with Gregory on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, McCarthy said the GOP would not give in on raising taxes as President Obama wants, repeating that the House Republicans would not support further tax increases beyond what was passed in January to avoid the fiscal cliff.

What recent event is going to be more defining for the Republican Party, Sen. Rob Portman’s about-face on gay marriage or the strident rhetoric of the Conservative Political Action Conference? The GOP ought to pray it’s the former and hope it keeps the party’s empathy gap from turning into the Grand Canyon. Politicians shouldn’t have to be poor to understand what it’s like to be poor: to have no money for a doctor, the rent, tuition or even food; to understand how that hampers people’s ability to envision and move toward a better future;

Addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) today, ForAmerica Chairman Brent Bozell blasted Republican leaders for their lack of conservative behavior. In particular, Bozell rebuked Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) for his budget, Gov. Haley Barbour for his barbs against conservatives, and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) for funding Obamacare: "So what do we conservatives believe? What is a conservative? "Throughout this wonderful conference so many very good leaders have discussed this so eloquently. Another discussion is unnecessary. Instead, let me tell you first what a conservative isn´t.

A new proposal would require New York City retailers to keep tobacco products out of sight under a first-in-the-nation proposal aimed at reducing the youth smoking rate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. The legislation would require stores to keep tobacco products in cabinets, drawers, under the counter, behind a curtain or in other concealed spots. They could only be visible when an adult is making a purchase or during restocking. While New York City would be the first in the nation to do this, Bloomberg says prohibitions

So say the NYT and WaPo. Obama’s own immigration proposal, by contrast, imagines citizenship for illegals in, er … 13 years. So that’s what having four Republicans in the “Gang of Eight” gets you — the same basic scheme as our very liberal president. Cory Booker should be ready to run by 2028, so there you go. You’re welcome, Cory. The arrangement would shrink the amount of time it takes to become a naturalized citizen, to three years from five years. But in an appeal to Republicans, it would also extend to 10 years, from 8, the amount of time

Zero Intelligence: What is happening these days in education? Children are being demonized and expelled from public schools for "crimes" associated with plastic army men or gun-shaped cookies. A monster is growing. Ever since the Department of Education took in more than $100 billion in 2009 stimulus cash to "improve education" the incidents of petty tyranny traumatizing children from its bureaucrats and teachers unions has grown exponentially in schools. Economist Dan Mitchell pointed out on his International Liberty blog that their latest target was a 9-year-old Michigan boy whose mother brought cupcakes decorated with plastic army men to class

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Police in the Dominican Republic say they have determined that three women who said they had sex with U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez for money were in fact paid to make false claims by an attorney in the Caribbean country. Police spokesman Maximo Baez says officers traced the payments to attorney Melanio Figueroa. Baez says two women received about $425 each and the other was paid about $300 to falsely state on camera that they had sex with Menendez (D-N.J.).

It’s starting. Well, it’s been predicted, but what’s beginning is something even America’s low-informed might notice but only when in front of their collective faces. Banks in southern Europe are beginning to restrict access to bank accounts. That this phenomenon will make its way across the pond is becoming rather clear, but only to those who listen carefully. Our money, the dollar we once knew, is now only virtual. The dollar our country made the standard of the world, has become an X and an O repeated and created trillions of times over each day without anything to back up its value. We’ve been off the gold standard since 1972, and since then the dollar established itself as the fiat currency of the world.
