What recent event is going to be more defining for the Republican Party, Sen. Rob Portman’s about-face on gay marriage or the strident rhetoric of the Conservative Political Action Conference? The GOP ought to pray it’s the former and hope it keeps the party’s empathy gap from turning into the Grand Canyon. Politicians shouldn’t have to be poor to understand what it’s like to be poor: to have no money for a doctor, the rent, tuition or even food; to understand how that hampers people’s ability to envision and move toward a better future;

Addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) today, ForAmerica Chairman Brent Bozell blasted Republican leaders for their lack of conservative behavior. In particular, Bozell rebuked Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) for his budget, Gov. Haley Barbour for his barbs against conservatives, and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) for funding Obamacare: "So what do we conservatives believe? What is a conservative? "Throughout this wonderful conference so many very good leaders have discussed this so eloquently. Another discussion is unnecessary. Instead, let me tell you first what a conservative isn´t.

A new proposal would require New York City retailers to keep tobacco products out of sight under a first-in-the-nation proposal aimed at reducing the youth smoking rate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. The legislation would require stores to keep tobacco products in cabinets, drawers, under the counter, behind a curtain or in other concealed spots. They could only be visible when an adult is making a purchase or during restocking. While New York City would be the first in the nation to do this, Bloomberg says prohibitions

So say the NYT and WaPo. Obama’s own immigration proposal, by contrast, imagines citizenship for illegals in, er … 13 years. So that’s what having four Republicans in the “Gang of Eight” gets you — the same basic scheme as our very liberal president. Cory Booker should be ready to run by 2028, so there you go. You’re welcome, Cory. The arrangement would shrink the amount of time it takes to become a naturalized citizen, to three years from five years. But in an appeal to Republicans, it would also extend to 10 years, from 8, the amount of time

Zero Intelligence: What is happening these days in education? Children are being demonized and expelled from public schools for "crimes" associated with plastic army men or gun-shaped cookies. A monster is growing. Ever since the Department of Education took in more than $100 billion in 2009 stimulus cash to "improve education" the incidents of petty tyranny traumatizing children from its bureaucrats and teachers unions has grown exponentially in schools. Economist Dan Mitchell pointed out on his International Liberty blog that their latest target was a 9-year-old Michigan boy whose mother brought cupcakes decorated with plastic army men to class

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Police in the Dominican Republic say they have determined that three women who said they had sex with U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez for money were in fact paid to make false claims by an attorney in the Caribbean country. Police spokesman Maximo Baez says officers traced the payments to attorney Melanio Figueroa. Baez says two women received about $425 each and the other was paid about $300 to falsely state on camera that they had sex with Menendez (D-N.J.).

It’s starting. Well, it’s been predicted, but what’s beginning is something even America’s low-informed might notice but only when in front of their collective faces. Banks in southern Europe are beginning to restrict access to bank accounts. That this phenomenon will make its way across the pond is becoming rather clear, but only to those who listen carefully. Our money, the dollar we once knew, is now only virtual. The dollar our country made the standard of the world, has become an X and an O repeated and created trillions of times over each day without anything to back up its value. We’ve been off the gold standard since 1972, and since then the dollar established itself as the fiat currency of the world.

In Rome for the formal installation of Pope Francis, Vice President Joseph R. Biden wisecracked Monday that he would “lose my soul” if he skipped a reception with U.S. Catholic cardinals. “We invited the American cardinals to a reception,” Mr. Biden told Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic in a meeting. “So unless I’m prepared to join the Eastern Orthodox Church, as a Roman Catholic, I’d better show up or I’ll lose my soul.” Mr. Biden, a practicing Catholic, is leading a U.S. delegation that will attend the installation of the new pope on Tuesday. The Louisiana Republican senator’s office emailed the following statement to reporters this afternoon: U.S. Sen. David Vitter announced his commitment to block the nomination of Thomas Perez as Secretary of the Labor Department until the Department of Justice responds to his 2011 letter related to spotty enforcement of the National Voter Registration Act in Louisiana. Perez was closely involved in the controversial New Black Panther voter intimidation case before the Department of Justice. “Thomas Perez’s record should be met with great suspicion by my colleagues for his spotty work related to the New Black Panther case,

Disgraced pol Anthony Weiner is potentially climbing back into politics after recently spending more than $100,000 on campaign consulting and polling — and sources tell Page Six that one person he’s looking to prove wrong about him is House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who urged him to resign in 2011. “Weiner is still fuming over his downfall, and he blames Nancy Pelosi,” said a source. After Weiner’s sexting scandal, he announced he was going to get psychological treatment and take a leave from the House, but Pelosi released a statement calling for him to resign

This is the attitude that Barack Obama is taking with him on his first official visit to Israel as president. When President Obama was asked by a group of Arab-American leaders during a meeting last week on why he did not intend to launch a new peace process, the leader said that Israel was not ready to make concessions, the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, cited an official, who was present at the high-level meeting, as saying. The official, who kept his identity anonymous, said the U.S. leader was frustrated with fruitlessness of the peace process, claiming it

President Obama nominated Justice Department official Thomas Perez for Labor secretary Monday -- but the candidate could be haunted by a newly released report that found he gave incomplete testimony on the controversial decision to drop charges against members of the New Black Panther Party. Perez, an assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department´s Civil Rights Division, would replace Hilda Solis at Labor if confirmed. Obama, touting Perez´ personal story as the son of immigrants who became the first lawyer in his family, urged the Senate to act quickly on the nomination.

The just published final thoughts of conservative legal giant Robert Bork, blocked from the Supreme Court in a Democratic witch hunt, reveal his deep concerns that the high court has taken a turn for the worse and is a threat to American freedom. "We are now being ruled in some of our most crucial cultural and moral issues by judges who have acquired the power, but certainly not the authority, to take those decisions out of our hands," he frets in "Saving Justice," published after the longtime Constitutional authority died last December.

When he said Mass for the College of Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, newly elected Pope Francis I warned these princes of the church against professing what he called “the worldliness of the devil, a demonic worldliness.” “Anyone who does not pray to the Lord prays to the devil,” Francis said, quoting Leon Bloy, a French writer who died in 1917, and who converted from agnosticism to Catholicism. “When we profess Christ without the Cross, we are not disciples of the Lord, we are worldly:

One´s first reflex is to gasp at the stupidity of the EU policy elites, but truth is that most EU officials handling the Cyprus crisis know perfectly well that their masters have just set the slow fuse on a powder keg--and they can only pray that it is slow. U.S. military bases are traditionally outfitted with some of the comforts of home — including comfort food. The naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for example, has McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks, Subway, an Irish pub with notorious fried pickles, and multiple bars. Now, the food police are closing in at the Department of Defense, with similar language that preceded school menu crackdowns. The Pentagon today announced 13 pilot sites for its Healthy Base Initiative: Fort Bragg, N.C.; Fort Sill, Okla.; Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii;

Latest 16.02 Mr Clark says British nationals in other eurozone countries should not fear for their deposits. [Snip] In the House of Commons, Greg Clark, the City minister, is briefing MPs about Cyprus. Today, President Obama issues a challenge to Republican Senators: in nominating Tom Perez as Labor secretary, he implies that Senate Republicans don’t have either the guts or organizational skill to stop what would become perhaps the most radical left-wing cabinet member in history. Whether the president is right about GOP senators remains to be seen. As they say, I wrote the book on Tom Perez. My New York Times bestseller Injustice: Exposing the Racial Agenda of the Obama Justice Department is largely a catalog of the rancid racialism over which Perez has presided.

It is three months since the killings in Newtown, since 20 children and six adults were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School less than two weeks before Christmas. And as bad as the story was, and will always be, it is even worse than we originally knew because now we discover that this was slaughter by spreadsheet. It has been reported previously that law enforcement found research about previous mass murderers at the Newtown, Conn., home the shooter, video gamer Adam Lanza, shared with his mother, the first victim of Dec. 14.

Why did Republicans fail to stop Barack Obama from winning another four years in the White House and what can they do to get back on the path to victory? Those are the topics tackled inside the 100-page report being released by the Republican National Committee’s Growth and Opportunity Project on Monday. “The GOP today is a tale of two parties,” the report states. “One of them, the gubernatorial wing, is growing and successful. The other, the federal wing, is increasingly marginalizing itself, and unless changes are made,

True to its motto, MSNBC has been leaning forward. To the point that its opinionated programming far outweighs its “factual reporting,” according to a new Pew study. While Fox News, too, had more opinionated programming, the network had a much smaller discrepancy between opinion and straight reporting. The study — which came as part of Pew Research Center’s annual “State of the Media” report — states that opinionated programming comprised 85 percent of MSNBC’s airtime (versus 15 percent of “factual reporting”). Meanwhile, Fox News had opinion 55 percent of the time, with 45 percent straight news.
